Scout Scribbles – Aguero Back in City Squad

Sergio Aguero is available for City’s cup replay with Blackburn tonight but Yaya Toure and David Silva miss out with minor injuries. Everton’s Ross Barkley is set for a spell on the sidelines due to a fractured toe, Andros Townsend shines for the Spurs second-string, Paul Lambert reckons Monday’s goal against Arsenal could spark a return to form for Christian Benteke, whilst Brede Hangeland returns as Fulham sweep aside Norwich in the cup:

Aguero Returns for City as Midfield Problems Mount

In a vastly enlightening press conference yesterday, Manuel Pellegrini confirmed that Sergio Aguero is back and fit to face Blackburn in his side’s FA cup tie this evening:

“Sergio is working as normal with the whole squad and he is in the squad list for tomorrow. We’ll see tomorrow if he can play. Of course he is a very important player for us. It doesn’t matter if we are scoring a lot of goals, Sergio will always be an important player and we are very happy that he is back.”

However, after also confirming the loss of Samir Nasri for up to eight weeks, the City boss revealed that both David Silva and Yaya Toure are out of tonight’s game, with Pellegrini only hopeful that they will be fit for Cardiff’s visit to the Etihad on Saturday. The Chilean, who reiterated that the mounting injury list will not affect their activity in the transfer window, admitted that Toure has actually been carrying an injury for the last couple of weeks:

“Yaya has the last two weeks played with a problem in his back, so I think it was too risky to continue playing in that way. It’s better for him to stop and to rest two or three days. For the moment it is not very serious.”

The Scout Says: The imminent return of Aguero is big news for managers currently wielding their wildcards and those in possession of City’s current upfront duo of choice Edin Dzeko and Alvaro Negredo. With Aguero almost certain to be instantly reinstalled into the starting XI on Saturday, and Negredo currently in fine form, it would seem that Dzeko’s short spell as a cut-price route into City’s attack has come to an end. Template wildcard teams will now surely be built around a frontline of Aguero and Luis Suarez, although the revelation of Toure’s ongoing injury problem might break up said template – his manager’s indication that the Ivorian’s back problem might become a serious issue if he continues to overuse him will cast doubt over the decision to hop aboard the bandwagon of the highest-owned midfielder in the game, and gives his 43.8% worth of owners something to keep an eye on.

Benteke gets Lambert’s backing

After he finally broke his goalscoring drought in Monday evening’s game against Arsenal with a bullet header, Christian Benteke has received a full vote of confidence from his manager, Paul Lambert. The Villa boss reckons the big Belgian will return to the form that saw him harvest 19 goals last season and help save his side’s thus far unconvincing season:

“That goal will give him a lift after his barren spell. Hopefully it will give him a big boost. It was great. It was a top goal – great cross and great header. I hope this gives him confidence. It was this time last year where he started to hit the goals, give or take a few weeks or so. He started to kick-in. He went on a scoring spree that made his name, really. This will certainly give him a big lift.”

The Scout Says: As if there weren’t enough options already fighting for places in our three-man frontlines. Yesterday’s loan signing of Grant Holt might not seem like the greatest show of faith from Lambert but, should his first goal since September signify an upturn in form, Benteke might well have huge appeal as a differential up top, with Villa’s next three home games against West Brom, West Ham and Norwich offering the Belgian a chance to put his power to use and go about re-writing the script for his season thus far. At 8.7, he’s not exactly budget-friendly but, should Monday night’s morale boost have the effect his manager predicts, Benteke could – as he showed in 2012/13 – prove as valuable an option as Daniel Sturridge or Olivier Giroud in the second half of the season.

Barkley Out for Three to Six Weeks

Everton have confirmed that Ross Barkley missed his side’s previous game against Norwich with a fractured toe he picked up in the 4-0 FA Cup victory against QPR the previous weekend. Reports suggest it is only a small fracture, but his absence could range from three to six weeks depending on the time it takes to heal.

The Scout Says: The young midfielder has made a huge impact on the Fantasy landscape this season, proving great value for his initial 4.5 price-tag and currently residing in over 25% of teams. The worst-case scenario for Everton and his current owners is that he misses the next six Gameweeks, with home matches against Aston Villa and Crystal Palace having looked potentially prosperous for the 20-year-old. His absence could, however, prove a blessing for Leon Osman if he is shifted into the advanced central role. Osman has played three hundred minutes fewer than Barkley this season but, with two goals, five assists and a total of 68 points accrued, he ranks only second to Kevin Mirallas in the Everton midfield. Depending on the length of Barkley’s absence, Osman could potentially rise above the Belgian and give Roberto Martinez a real headache upon the young Englishman’s return.

Townsend Makes his Comeback

Andros Townsend made his return from injury yesterday with a goal and assist in Tottenham under-21s’ 4-1 victory over Newcastle. The winger was withdrawn at half-time but, should he have proven himself fit and ready to his manager – who post-match heaped praise upon the direct, attacking approach of the England international – Townsend might well make the squad for the trip to Swansea come Sunday afternoon.

“He is a top trainer and he wants to be playing in every minute of every game, but he will get his opportunities and I am sure he will be productive between now and the end of the season for us. Obviously I like Andros and I know what his qualities are. He gets past people, he makes goals and he can score goals. He needs to slow himself down on his shooting and he knows that”

The Scout Says: Truth be told, Townsend has failed to turn his attacking instincts into Fantasy returns this season, notching just one goal and one assist before picking up the hamstring injury prior to Christmas that has kept him out up until now. He will surely be eased back into action but, should Sherwood’s new regime have the same impact on the winger as it has on the likes of Christian Eriksen and Emmanuel Adebayor, Townsend – looking to prove himself ahead of this summer’s World Cup – may well make a mockery of his current price tag of 5.1.

Swansea Confusion over Ki Sung-Yeung Recall

After Gus Poyet indicated that he would like to make the South Korean’s move to the Stadium of Light permanent, Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins has hinted that just the opposite might happen:

“”He is our player and we can recall him up until January 31.”

Ki, however, has responded in an interview with Sunderland’s website by stating his intention to continue performing for Sunderland and help the Black Cats avoid relegation.

Despite Jenkins’ protestations, however, reports in the local press this morning seem to indicate the cut-off date for a recall has, indeed, passed and Ki will remain on Wearside until the end of the season.

The Scout Says: Available for just 4.8, Ki has acquired something of a following around these parts just recently after a series of impressive performances resulted in double-figure returns in two of his last four starts. Given Michael Laudrup’s lack of faith, a return to Swansea would have almost certainly seen Kim relegated to the bench and lose his appeal as a budget option but today’s news will ensure he remains on the radar of Fantasy managers ahead of a strong set of fixtures.

Injuries Ease for Cottagers

Fulham cruised past Norwich in last night’s FA Cup Third Round replay at the Cottage. In a game that saw both sides make several changes from the weekend, the hosts registered a 3-0 victory, with Steve Sidwell scoring for the third game in four across all competitions. Both Brede Hangeland and Maarten Stekelenburg returned from injury to take their place in Rene Meulensteen’s starting XI and post-match, their manager was clearly buoyed by their respective comebacks:

“Having Brede back was a great boost. He’s done very well after his surgery and trained very hard to get back. Sunderland was a bit too early but it was great to see him come through the 90 minutes tonight. Arsenal on Saturday is a different kettle of fish away from home but we’ll review this game with Brede and go from there…We were very pleased to see Maarten back. It was a very unfortunate injury. It didn’t look too bad at the time but we’re glad to see him back; he was excellent.”

The Scout Says: Missing since Gameweek 8 with a back injury, Hangeland’s absence has clearly been significant for the Cottagers this term. Fulham had managed two clean sheets in his eight league matches but have mustered just one more in the subsequent 13 fixtures and have struggled for a semblance of solidity at the back. Indeed, since Meulensteen took over, his side have been dire defensively – in eight matches, they have shipped four to Everton, City and Sunderland and also conceded six to a Hull side that have netted 22 times all season. As Meulensteen mentions, though, it may be somewhat risky to field his skipper in back-to-back games so soon after returning but with games against Southampton, United and Liverpool in the next five, in addition to their Emirates trip, he can ill-afford to do without the Norwegian’s influence at the back right now.

Get Aguero in straight away, or keep Wellbz? Already did my wildcard, and besides the Chelsea game United have good fixtures and with Roon/Rvp out, he`s their only threat pretty much, and theyre gonna score goals and win matches.

Cardiff, Stoke, Fulham and Palace in the next 6, and even if Rooney returns, he`ll still play furthest forward. And yeah all the United jokes aside and even if they are shaite, they`ll still score and win all those i`d reckon.

22 goal Luis Suarez says different. One other thing is exactly that. Everybody and their mom will get in Aguero, when you`re trailing 100 points its kind of hard to gain ground if you have all the same big hitters.

He said FINISHER not most goals 😉
This did spark some interest so comparing all players goal conversion with a minimum of 7 goals says Yaya (29.4%), Welbeck (25.8%), Cannibal (23.9%), Sturridge (23.3%) Hazard (23.1%), RVP (21.2%) and Kun (21%).

Silva or Gerrard? I am not sold on Silva, he is expensive, has a yellow flag and I am worried about a lack of return. He did nothing when City beat West Ham 6v0 too.

Gerrard seems to be a more consistent scorer and seems to have penalties too. Slightly cheaper but worried that he may now sit deeper? Thoughts?

"Seems to have penalties". He`s been on penalties for years now m8. Rodgers has stated that we`ll see Gerrard a lot more in the deep role because of his pass range, but you still get set piece duties which Liverpool are scoring more from than City, although Suarez takes most of the free kicks from dangerous shooting positions. Silva on the other hand is the superior attacking fpl and real life option. Yeah he does assist the assister quite a lot, but with Nasri and Yaya possibly out for a while, he`s the only maestro left, and if he`s fit for the weekend, i`d definitely get him over Gerrard.

That would save 0.1m, but I kinda prefer playing Szczesny over Boruc every week and then rotating Clyne in depending on fixtures. Reckon we'll get many double risers between now and Sat?

think you may have missed the 0.1 on most of them.
ozil is your obvious dgrade then. though also take into account you will have 4 players from that squad blanking on GW 28, so your bench will need to be decent

My humble opinion is that your team is too weak in MF IMO especially with Man Utd blank in GW28.

              I'd do:

              Ches > Boruc
              Clyne > Bardsley
              4.2 > Ki?

and if you really want Arsenal DF I'd upgrade Kol to Kos. Hope that's helpful. 🙂

Cheers - GW28 is quite far away though (7 GWs) and I had planned to do something like Ozil & the 4.2m -> Ramsey & Lallana well before then.

I like Bardsley as a defensive option though - he's been in a few of my drafts.

Fair enough mate. In which I'd shave it off by just getting Boruc and Bardsley in for Ches and Clyne. Don't really see any other options as I'm sure you are dead set on your 'top' players like Oz and Giroud.

Yeah, that would easily do it. Not sure I'd wanna be without ARS defence though given current form.

Perhaps Ward -> Parr (would save 0.2m) and then hope I can squeeze out 0.2m in price movements before the deadline, which is unfortunately not looking likely at the mo!

I was thinking Boruc as well but this is the only way to get Chelsea, Arsenal & City defense while remaining 3-4-3. Chelsea has really tightened up and Can't afford to miss on their CS points

Good team - would be great if you had a playing reserve keeper just in case but still great your TV must be great

I can do Pazuelo or Mutch and get a a playing keeper as well

Yeah, TV value is good..Selling value of 106.7 and TV of 110.6 even after selling Rooney and some other players which I had since long

Maybe Boruc and Mannone for Cech and Davis and Eriksen for Lallana, Januzaj for Ki.

I didn't rate Eriksen at the start of the season, not sure if I changed my mind. Lallana is great has been great all season. Eriksen was poor under AVB but Sherwood is bringing out the best of him and I think he can get even better in that Spurs team. Debatable if Lallana will get better in the Saints team this season.

My defence is in trouble. I have Evra*, Coleman, Distin* Burner*, Chester. Do we expect Evra to be okay for Chelsea? Even so, it looks like an incoming 1 pointer.

Should I make a defensive transfer my priority or go ahead with the planned Lukaku ---> Aguero and wait until my WC to revamp my defence?

Evra should be fine. I'd expect Moyes to make sure of that as he can't possibly play Buttner. Like you say though I wouldn't expect points from him. I'd make the defensive transfer to be honest or even WC this week.

Depends on what youre going for. Sturridge obviously is the better finisher and although he has some movement about him, Wellbz is very energic and offers more to the team in that aspect. Doesnt seem to get moody like Sturridge either. Also has good relations with Rooney. Its pretty close, i guess i`d choose Sturridge against the "weaker" teams and Wellbeck otherwise, given neutral form on both.

To be honest this is a good answer. I would fully expect them both to feature as options alongside Rooney.

I`m a Liverpool fan, so obviously this is my unbiased answer. For Englands sake i hope that he never plays Wellbeck on the wings "just to put him in the team" so he can have Sturridge up front as well, i think this is a terrible option. Seeing as theyre the only two valid options now, i`d expect them both to get a run-in atleast pre world cup. Its Woy Hodgson, nobody knows what he`ll do. Just don`t bring Rickie Lambert or JRod or something to Brazil if they want to win something.

              Pick 3 out of 5:

              Sagna (FUL)
              Davies (nor)
              Clyne (sun)
              Terry (MUN)
              Ward (STK)

Already have Speroni in goal, if that makes it easier.

                Sagna Terry Ward.

Insignificant that you have Speroni in goal IMO. Palace still have a better chance than Hull and Southampton to get a cleanie.

Hmm, true. I just feel like it'd be more risky doubling up on Palace defence. It could either work wonders or it could fail badly.

Mannone/Adrian looks so tasty for save points and potential clean sheets at 8.7 (rotates to NEW/SOT, STO, HUL, SWA, NOR, SOT, WBA, FUL, CPL)

Yep, this. Rather annoyingly he was really close to a rise, but as you say regardless of price protection he wouldnt have made the rise. People are either upgrading him another high price defender or downgrading to fund upgrades elsewhere.

There is no rhyme or reason as to why he should be protected, as far as I can see. But Frank-the-Code on TFPL seems to think otherwise, and to be honest he's rarely wrong.

he hasnt been flagged all year i think.
do TFPL not react to flags or do they react to rumours

The price changes react to facts only. Something on the FPL website has triggered the change - it won't have anything directly to do with rumours.

Same for Oscar, very frustrating. No idea why but like Pasqualinho says, Frank rarely gets it wrong.

Am I mad to be considering keeping lukaku in my WC team this week with Suarez and Aguero?

Obviously it's against the grain as everyone is dropping him.

                    1. He cost me £7.8m
                    2. I think Mcgready signing will increase Everton attacking threat and subsequently lukaku's impact
                    3. With everyone selling he becomes a differential

I dont think McGeady will slot straight into the team, to be fair. Even if he`s bought in to be first choice, he`s probably not fit for the bpl just yet, and Mirallas is hot at the moment and Deloufeu is returning soon. That said, not a bad idea to keep Lukaku. Good fixtures and the only striker for a strong attacking side.

True... I figure if I leave a little cash in the bank I can look towards studge/giroud in a few weeks if it's not working out.

All depends on your position in your leagues, if you`re playing for fun or for monies, and if youre chasing or protecting a lead. If the latter, then get Aguero all day.

What do you think will happen to Bony when Michu returns? Back to rotation, or will Laudrup finally stick with playing both?

He needs to play both surely. Michu needs to learn to play off him.

Surely this week will be a bumper week, possible 100 scores all round i think.

need some help please. my team for this week at the moment is

                    --------------------Mannone---------------------
                    ----Terry Chester Olsson Koscielny----
                    ---------------Hazard Silva Ozil---------------
                    ----------Suarez Negredo Lukaku----------
                    (xx; Whittingham, Gabbidon, Barkley)

                    1ft, 2.6mil itb

the WC is very tempting but I think my team is strong enough to survive this week.
I'm not sure what to do this week. I'm not keen on taking a hit as i took a -8 last week.

Some of my thoughts have been Negredo > Aguero (only if i'm sure he will start), Lukaku > Giroud/Sturridge as a 1 or 2 week punt, or Silva out for Yaya/Gerrard

Aguero will start..but he won't finish. I'm holding off for a week and keeping Negredo because I don't trust his injury routine on the first game back...Been there done that...
