FA Cup Scout Notes – Fifth Round – Sunday

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain claims a goal and assist as Arsenal edge into the last eight of the FA Cup with a narrow win over Liverpool. Steven Gerrard notches the Reds’ only strike via the spot as Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge both draw blanks. Lacina Traore needs just four minutes to score on his Everton debut as Steven Naismith climbs off the bench to grab a goal and assist as the Toffees register a 3-1 win over Swansea:

Arsenal Avenge Anfield Hammering
Arsenal Wenger retained only four of the starting XI that started against United on Wednesday. Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny, Mikel Arteta and Mesut Ozil were the only players to keep their places in a side that saw Yaya Sanogo handed a rare chance to lead the line, with Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain and Lukas Podolski fielded on the flanks. The latter two played pivotal roles as Arsenal avenged their Gameweek 25 defeat at the hands of the Merseysiders by grabbing a goal apiece – Oxlade Chamberlain also chipped in with an assist to continue the impressive home form which also saw him net twice against Palace in Gameweek 24.

Unfortunately for Fantasy managers, this results puts paid to Arsenal’s Gameweek 29 clash with Swansea, which was initially scheduled for Saturday March 8. The Gunners now play Everton in the FA Cup that weekend and, with a Champions League clash with Bayern Munich the following Tuesday, the Swans match will need to be played in an alternative Gameweek.

Post-match, Wenger revealed he dropped Olivier Giroud to the bench as the frontman looked “a bit tired”, before going on to discuss the rest of his team selection:

“I made changes, most of them for medical reasons. Some for technical reasons, because [for example] the [No 2] goalkeeper always plays [in the FA Cup]. I rate Fabianski so highly that I had no hesitation to play him. Jack Wilshere had a stiff back, after that Cazorla was ill, Gibbs had a little muscular problem, Sagna was tired. But I kept the defensive stability with Mertesacker and Koscielny. I rested Rosicky completely. They will be OK for Wednesday, but we lose Arteta, who is suspended for Wednesday night.”

Rodgers Focussing on League After Cup Loss
Brendan Rodgers made a couple of alterations from the side that edged past Fulham in midweek. Daniel Agger was fit enough to start ahead of Kolo Toure at centre-half, whilst Joe Allen got the nod over Jordan Henderson in the midfield three after the latter underwent wrist surgery prior to the match. Whilst the Gunners defence kept Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge off the scoresheet, Steven Gerrard’s spot-kick duties helped the Reds skipper grab his side’s consolation after the Uruguayan was felled in the box but, despite dominating, the visitors fell to defeat to leave them with just league duties to concentrate on.

At present, their Gameweek 29 home clash with Sunderland is currently called off after the Black Cats earned a place in the quarter-finals by seeing off Southampton yesterday. However, with neither club in Europe, there’s still a possibility that this one could be moved to midweek, thus remaining in the same Gameweek – those Fantasy managers currently holding both Suarez and Sturridge will be keen for some clarification in light of a potential blank. After the game, Rodgers stated that he is hoping the Emirates loss proves a blessing in disguise as Liverpool look to regroup before concentrating on their title bid:

“I suppose it narrows our focus now to one competition. We’ll just continue with the confidence and the belief that we have been playing with. You saw it today and if we play with that aggression, we’re going to have a really exciting 12 games to finish the season. But I wouldn’t like to say that we want to be out, because it was a competition that we wanted to get to the final of. Unfortunately, we’ve lost, so congratulations to Arsenal, who go through. We’ve got to go home and lick our wounds.”

Traore Notches On Debut as Toffees Advance
Roberto Martinez made three changes from the team that lost to Spurs at the Lane last weekend for yesterday’s visit of Swansea. Lacina Traore, Ross Barkley and Joel Robles came in for Steven Naismith, Leon Osman and Tim Howard, with Traore needing just four minutes to grab a goal on his debut before being replaced by Naismith on the hour mark. The Scot staked a claim for a starting berth by playing a pivotal role in his side’s 3-1 success, emerging from the bench to grab a goal and assist (earning spot-kick which was converted by Leighton Baines ) to set up a quarter-final showdown with Arsenal.

This result means that the Toffees’ Gameweek 29 match at Newcastle, initially pencilled in for Sunday March 9, will now need to be rescheduled but, as neither club is involved in European competition, there’s still a chance it could be moved to the midweek, thus staying in the confines of the same Gameweek.

After the match, Martinez heaped praise on Traore and Naismith as his options for the lone striker role increase, before allaying any fears over the latter’s withdrawal from a head knock late on:

“For Lacina Traore to play 60 minutes was a real success. I thought he coped with those instructions for the team off the ball really well and he scored within four minutes of his new career. It is a beautiful sign for the future. Then to see Steven Naismith continue with his good moment of form, taking his goal really well….Steven’s okay. We’re going to check him in the next 24 hours. He had a bit of a delayed concussion. When he had the knock he was okay, then he became a bit dizzy and he couldn’t remember much of what was happening. At that point we couldn’t take any risks. We’ll observe him over the next 24 hours but we’re hoping he’ll be fine and he’ll be able to join the group for this week’s training.”

Swans Slip to Defeat as Monk Rings the Changes
Garry Monk’s first-team selection perhaps hinted at where his priorities lie for the remainder of the season. The interim Swans boss retained just three players (Pablo Hernandez, Wayne Routledge and Jose Canas) from the XI that drew 1-1 with Stoke on Wednesday evening and watched on as Jonathan de Guzman grabbed his side’s only goal.

With upcoming Europa League games against Napoli on the horizon, the short-term schedule (blank Gameweek 29 aside) still remains busy for the Welsh outfit and, after the match, Monk maintained he will continue to utilise the depth of his squad in order to cope:

“When you have seven games in 21 days, it’s impossible to play the same team every game. Everyone will play during this certain period, and all of the players have been magnificent in training. I put a team out that I thought could win the game. It’s a squad game. With Europe, you have to have that rotation. I won’t rotate for the sake of rotating. Until we conceded the second, you wouldn’t have believed we made eight changes.”

Norwich fixtures are looking too good to ignore. Hooper worth a shout? My previous punts on a cheaper forward (Lukaku, Benteke and Bony) didn't really pay off.

    A. Mata -> Snodgrass, Bony -> Ade
    B. Bony -> Hooper and roll over a FT

    McGregor
    Azpilicueta / Koscielny / Shaw
Hazard / Lallana / Mata / Silva (vc)
    Suárez (c) / Bony / Sturridge

    Boruc / Noone / Coleman / Ward

    2FTs. Only 0.3 ITB

After the matches though….Yaya to Snodgrass is tempting me.

Then Silva/Yaya back in before DGW(s)

Should I save a transfer this week? I can field this team:

    Boruc
    Sagna, Azpil, Bruce.
    Cazorla, Mata, Hazard, Mirallas.
    RvP, Lambert, Suarez.

Mannone, Noone, Demel, Ward. 1FT. 1M ITB.

Also, would you play Mirallas or Noone? And which 2 would you play from Demel/Bruce/Azpil?

What is the perceived wisdom for those with wildcards remaining?
I was going to play it after 28 to align for 29, but wondering if I can limp through 29 and then load up with double gameweekers post 29.
I've currently got 3 missing for 28 and 6 missing for 29, although should be able to use 3 ft before 29 to get a full XI.

What am I hoping for with Eriksen for the Europa League game? Coming in from the bench and doing well sounds like the ideal scenario as I'm guessing they will play quite a few second-stringers. I have 2FTs, but I'm thinking of saving one and keep Eriksen for Norwich, hoping he was just getting a good rest.

I'd keep him Dogba. It's just second guessing what's happening with Eriksen in my opinion. Before he even joined Spurs, I was aware of his class. Maybe he just needs a rest. Prior to the Everton game, he was talked of in the same breath as Lallana, Mirallas etc. I think many folks have overreacted a little to recent events. No harm in keeping a player who could be a potent differential in gameweek 29.

Yeah, not sure he's completely used to the strains of PL yet and he is really young as well. I'll probably stick and hope he's re-energized for Norwich.

Everton are expected to make an announcement early this week about the rescheduling of their match against Palace. Perhaps they might announce at the same time whether their match against Newcastle can be moved to midweek in GW29.

Liverpool might find it harder to move their match against Sunderland to GW29 midweek because it was due to be televised on Sky TV.

Im in an odd position where I have two frees and dont really want to use my FT. Bear with me. My team is

    Marshall
    Kosc Coleman Ivanovic
    Mata Silva Hazard Snodgrass
    Giroud Suarez Adebayor

    Puncheon Ward Vlaar

Looking at the team im thinking that I would probably only shift either -

Giroud, who is at home to Sunderland
    or
Vlaar who has a great game in GW28

My team isnt too badly affected when it comes to 28 and 29 and will shift Silva for Lallana next GW.

    Any thoughts / ideas?

Shift Giroud now. He doesn't score much, and never scores big.

I'd ditch Vlaar or Coleman (when his blank is confirmed officially). A rested Giroud versus Sunderland at home? Not too keen on ditching.

I'd shift Vlaar to a defender with a decent game in 29. Maybe Olsson from Norwich?

You can easily start your big three defenders in GW28 anyway.

    Just wondered if anyone could shed any light on the following players;

Ryan Bennett - Due back from injury this week, will he be preferred over Yobo? If so then any news on a Michael Turner return date?

Jon Flanagan - Is this guy expected to drop out when Johnson is back?

Parr - Was dropped for the last home game but back in the line up for the cancelled Everton game. Still first choice left back?

Pozuelo - No flag on FPL but showing as injured on Physio Room. I'd figured that he'd just been dropped by Monk but the injury throws a new slant on it.

I'm not holding out much hope for him and will likely shift him for Noone anyway but just curious.

Pretty much all my GW29 players have question marks which is extremely annoying as it seems a waste of a transfer if they end up playing.

There is a chance Flanagan will switch to LB when Johnson comes back, but i wouldn't bring him in. I'm holding though.

I saw Enrique was due back soon, I guess he'll start over Flanagan?

Flanagan would be very unlucky to lose his place. I would argue that he's out performed Johnson this season and the place is his to lose.

Johnson is class - I'd have him over Flanagan any day of the week. Dont get me wrong, I like Flanagan, but I would pick GJ over him. I'd move him to LB personally and play him ahead of Enrique

    Thoughts on this UCLF team?

    Courtois - Muslera
Ivanovic - van der Wiel - Marcelo - Alaba - Smolnikov
    Hazard - Arda Turan - Nasri - Farfan - T.Motta
    C.Ronaldo - Ibrahimovic - Aubemayang

    bank: 0.5M

where eventually make changes or use a spare 0.5M ? 😀

A lot of folks questioning why games haven't been cancelled yet.
They will be. My best friend, the season ticker, has it all nicely updated. 8 teams out, 12 playing.
    TEAMS OUT:
    VILLA
    MAN C
    ARSENAL
    SUNDERLAND
    LIVERPOOL
    SWANSEA
    EVERTON
    NEWCASTLE
Warning: GW 29 could have some games rescheduled with in the week from what I have heard.

Is MIRALLAS a good option for the GWs MCI have blanks?

Im thinking save transfer now (GW27)
YAYA to Mirallas for GW28 (as MCI have a blank 28 and 29 and EVE at home to WHU)
GW29 I will have 2 FT again so will do Mert to ZAB (both blanks but will want for after)
GW 30 will do Eriksen and Adebayor to YAYA and AGUERO.....

no hits and 3x city with full XI each week.... good plan?

2 FTs, 1.4M in the bank and WC available.

    Boruc - Davis

    Coleman - Cahill - Kolarov - Bruce - Ward

    Hazard - Mata - AJ - Puncheon - Noone

    Suarez - Negredo - Sturridge

Priority for this week? 2 FT and 0.1 in the bank:

    Cech, Davis
    Koscielny, Kolarov, Flanagan, Parr, Bennett
    Hazard, Yaya, Lallana, Eriksen, Pozuelo
    Suarez, Sturridge, RVP

    A) Kolarov to Azpi - There's a chance Kolarov won't start and he has two blanks coming up
    B) Bennett to 4.0 - Tempted to hold out and see if he's back from injury and ousts Yobo
    C) Eriksen to ?? - Can't see a replacement bar maybe Nolan (tonights game pending). Good fixtures if he's recalled
    D) Pozuelo to Noone - Noone has a nice game in GW29 if he's nailed
    E) RVP to Adebayor - Seems a waste to lose a decent captain in GW29 but Ade could score big over the next two.
