The Sun “Road to Rio” Game Now Open for Entry

The Sun launched its new World Cup warm-up game earlier today. “Road to Rio” is free to play for all registered Dream Team managers, with a £15,000 prize pot on offer. If you don’t have a team registered for the main 2013-14 Dream Team Game, you can still qualify by purchasing the Game Premium-In-Play packages prior to the closing date on Saturday March 15.

Running alongside the normal Dream Team offering, this game uses all the same rules aside from the player list, which is custom built to include only those players in contention for the World Cup, complete with new player prices.

If, like me, you’ve suffered a long string of ill-timed injuries this season, Road to Rio offers a much-needed opportunity to start from scratch and bid for some belated Dream Team glory, with a £10,000 winner’s prize on offer.

Having backed the likes of Theo Walcott, Sergio Aguero and Philippe Coutinho in my starting squad, not to mention the stalling Robin van Persie, my campaign suffered a false start and never really recovered. Typically, even when granted a chance to tinker in the Transfer Windows, I’ve managed to target the next major injury with uncanny accuracy. I’ve taken it on the chin but it’s further proof that a run of cruel setbacks can scupper your Dream Team ambitions, making multiple lineups almost a necessity if you want to avoid riding your luck.

Road to Rio arrives to provide the perfect antidote, reviving our end of season interest. With a new player list, there’s fresh incentive to assess the data and search out some undervalued gems and, with one team per entry, there’s an even playing field competing for prizes.

You can click here to register your new team and get started. Below, we’ve compiled an FAQ on the game and how it works.

In the next week we’ll bring you our Road to Rio starting XI to provide you some tips on compiling your Samba-themed teamsheet.

What’s Road to Rio?
It’s the Sun Dream Team’s World Cup warm-up tournament, featuring a brand new player list, with new values. It runs according to the regular Dream Team rules, with scoring starting on the weekend of March 15 until the end of the season.

What’s in it for me?
There’s a prize pool of £15,000 on offer, with £10,000 going to the winner and the rest of the cash split amongst the five teams that follow.

1st £10,000
2nd £2,500
3rd £1,000
4th £750
5th £500
6th £250

How do I get involved?
If you’re already registered for Dream Team then you’ll be given your free Road to Rio entry. Entries are limited to one team per person. Click here for details.

If you’re yet to register for Dream Team and are looking for a Premium-In-Play package, simply click here to get involved. You will then be eligible for the Road to Rio.

All entries must be in by the first kick-off on March 15 to be included.

How does my team score points?
The rules for Road to Rio are identical to the main Dream Team game so points are earned from Premier League matches, along with FA Cup, Champions League and the Europa League. For a full guide to the Dream Team rules, click here for our guide.

Can I enter more than one team?
Not for Road to Rio. Entry is limited to one team per person so you’ll need to do what you can to avoid the injury-prone, red card magnets and those who often suffer from rotation.

Can I make transfers?
Nope, this is a fire and forget game. Your initial starting XI will take you through from now until the end of the season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

he has over a quarter of Sunderland's goals and 20% of their assists..clearly their big player, fixtures aren't as awful as people are making them out to be and has 3 DGWs..and is cheap and could become cheaper by the time you pick him up..

he's not a defender so it doesn't matter if they lose games..all that matters is that they score goals..they haven't been doing much of it but it's not out of the question and statistically he's got more of a chance than anyone else aside from City mids to do so just based on fixtures available..

I don't have him, likely wont be getting him for GW31 either, but beyond then I'll be looking at him closely. Could be major bargain especially if he falls further in price.

Nolan rose just before a blank. I've given up trying to second guess which way the market will go now.

6.6 is still big time bargain for AJ.

I'm actually very surprised that most will opt him out for a DGW-er. So you folks do willing to pose that value? I think most of us bought him quite cheaply and selling him will slightly suffer the team value.

Not really, there's just another striker who's really under the radar who I think will do just as well as him in GW31. Also, Aguero's prone to injuries and probably won't play 180 mins in the DGW. I'll get him in for the future DGWs though.

I just realized I'm in a bit of a bind that will hopefully turn into an opportunity.

Since I have Boruc, Davis, and Lallana, my planned ft of Hudson to Chambers is not possible as I will have too many Southampton. If these are my defenders and their gw29 status:

    Ivanovic (Baines Demel Bertrand Hudson)

Isn't it worth risking a hit this week to ship Bertrand and Hudson? It will be -4 but I will not play either of them until Bertrand maybe in gw33, so they are effectively dead weight. I just need their replacements to earn me four points combined before then to break even, right?

      Yeah, I suppose so.

Marc Wilson is a short term option I'm looking into (possibly wont last long though), not sure how long til Huth is back, but Wilson has decent fixtures, cheap and unless Huth comes back suddenly, starts.

Could just be better to sit tight and move Bertrand Hudson for free. This GW the best moves might be the ones not made.

I would agree that no moves for the rest is the right call, but Hudson is done for the season and Bertrand can't play v Chelsea (nor would I play him in gw31 so that's three gws not playing for him). Wilson and Dann from CPL might be the ones in my tight price bracket.

    Hi DZ!

I'm currently planning on using my WC for GW 31, how does this sound for a squad for it, any changes or improvement much welcomed! 🙂

    Mannone K. Davis

    Chester Olsson Chambers Collins Distin

    Yaya Nolan Johnson Hazard Livermore

    Suarez Aguero Sturridge

Gives me potentially 11 players who play twice (depending on if I choose to bench Hazard over Livermore).

Hazard v Arsenal at H is a tough fixture, but benching for Livermore is still hard to follow through on. The rage I'd feel if i picked Livermore and Hazard scored and Jake got an injury 15 mins into the first Game ruling him out of the second...

Yeah, that's a very good point! Only problem is I'm around 40 points behind my ML leader, so I'm playing catchup at the minute, and may need to take a few risks here and there!

40 points isnt anything too much to worry about. Its maybe 4 or 5 correct captain choices from being level. No need to take massive risks yet, GW29 to 31 could see gains on your leader you didnt expect.

40 points and 3 weeks to go is the time to go all in on gambles.

No problem. I've got a larger gap to claw back in my mini league but I'm confident it can be done so long as I dont do anything foolish.

PS apologies in advance if Hazard gets a 10 min cameo and a booking whilst Livermore pretends to be 2005 Frank Lampard.

Haha, don't worry about it mate; Hazards the most logical choice at the minute. But who knows what will happen between now and a few weeks. Livermore could really pick up a lot of form, I may slip up and be around 80 points down, or (heaven forbid) Hazard could even get injured.

Best of luck in closing that gap! Hope it works out for you 🙂

    Wrong feckin post 😳

My point about holding kolarov for the long haul. I've had him since gw22. He's scored 12 0 1 1 1 11. That's over 4 ppg, which is acceptable but he's also come very close to another assist and goal at least. The potential in holding him until seasons end now is huge imo with 3 extra games. Think I'm gonna sell him for Baines though next week then swap back in gw33, hopefully in time for his 2 dgw's

Age old eternal question here folks - how many are you fielding this gameweek?

I Was looking at 9 including a transfer in of Puncheon this week, but given the fact that he might not play, and I don't really want him long term, I might just opt for a good old 3-3-1 formation with Boruc in the sticks...then go into all out planning mode to get 11 top players in for 31.

Is Kolarov too risky for the DGW?

5.1m for a defender with his attacking potential is a bargain, plus it just feels easier to bench a 5m defender over a 6m one (eg, Zaba, Kompany etc) for their tougher fixtures.

Going by what has happened this year so far he's as likely to be rested for one of the two DGW games ... depending on which he plays might not be worth it. I'd be getting a nailed on defender in earnest.

Only problem is shifting him after as Newcastle have a few tricky fixtures.

Kinda thinking of starting with Debuchy on my WC with a plan to shift him for one of the future DGWers once announced (around GW33/34) - candidates being Zaba/Kolarov/Coleman/CPL defender. Starting with Distin is another decent option imo - less of an attacking threat but saves a future transfer.

Thanks, personally I wont go anywhere near Man Utd. I'm even getting rid of Mata next week because I think their are better options elsewhere. I think Zaba/Coleman/Distin/Kompany/Skrtel all better options

I agree, just need a defender for this week and it'd be a huge bonus if he had a DGW in GW31 too!

Completely get the point, but even against West Brom I dont fancy United to keep a cleanie. The Moyes factor is HUGE!

The factor that United are a rabble regardless of who is coaching them, is also a factor.

        G'day Innsie!

Personally I think Vidic is a risk ... he could pay off, Man U could ship goals in each game and return a big fat 4 points (or less) from a DGW player. I wouldn't be surprised to see City plow 3-4 past them.

          Hey Test Eagles!

You're right, 4 points wouldn't surprise me at all tbh. Cheers mate 🙂
