The Sun “Road to Rio” Game Now Open for Entry

The Sun launched its new World Cup warm-up game earlier today. “Road to Rio” is free to play for all registered Dream Team managers, with a £15,000 prize pot on offer. If you don’t have a team registered for the main 2013-14 Dream Team Game, you can still qualify by purchasing the Game Premium-In-Play packages prior to the closing date on Saturday March 15.

Running alongside the normal Dream Team offering, this game uses all the same rules aside from the player list, which is custom built to include only those players in contention for the World Cup, complete with new player prices.

If, like me, you’ve suffered a long string of ill-timed injuries this season, Road to Rio offers a much-needed opportunity to start from scratch and bid for some belated Dream Team glory, with a £10,000 winner’s prize on offer.

Having backed the likes of Theo Walcott, Sergio Aguero and Philippe Coutinho in my starting squad, not to mention the stalling Robin van Persie, my campaign suffered a false start and never really recovered. Typically, even when granted a chance to tinker in the Transfer Windows, I’ve managed to target the next major injury with uncanny accuracy. I’ve taken it on the chin but it’s further proof that a run of cruel setbacks can scupper your Dream Team ambitions, making multiple lineups almost a necessity if you want to avoid riding your luck.

Road to Rio arrives to provide the perfect antidote, reviving our end of season interest. With a new player list, there’s fresh incentive to assess the data and search out some undervalued gems and, with one team per entry, there’s an even playing field competing for prizes.

You can click here to register your new team and get started. Below, we’ve compiled an FAQ on the game and how it works.

In the next week we’ll bring you our Road to Rio starting XI to provide you some tips on compiling your Samba-themed teamsheet.

What’s Road to Rio?
It’s the Sun Dream Team’s World Cup warm-up tournament, featuring a brand new player list, with new values. It runs according to the regular Dream Team rules, with scoring starting on the weekend of March 15 until the end of the season.

What’s in it for me?
There’s a prize pool of £15,000 on offer, with £10,000 going to the winner and the rest of the cash split amongst the five teams that follow.

1st £10,000
2nd £2,500
3rd £1,000
4th £750
5th £500
6th £250

How do I get involved?
If you’re already registered for Dream Team then you’ll be given your free Road to Rio entry. Entries are limited to one team per person. Click here for details.

If you’re yet to register for Dream Team and are looking for a Premium-In-Play package, simply click here to get involved. You will then be eligible for the Road to Rio.

All entries must be in by the first kick-off on March 15 to be included.

How does my team score points?
The rules for Road to Rio are identical to the main Dream Team game so points are earned from Premier League matches, along with FA Cup, Champions League and the Europa League. For a full guide to the Dream Team rules, click here for our guide.

Can I enter more than one team?
Not for Road to Rio. Entry is limited to one team per person so you’ll need to do what you can to avoid the injury-prone, red card magnets and those who often suffer from rotation.

Can I make transfers?
Nope, this is a fire and forget game. Your initial starting XI will take you through from now until the end of the season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Ok guys this is a fpl SOS for help in trying to sort something with this team. I only got one response from the afternoon crowd so I've still got some sweets left!
Currently have 5, yes 5 playing Gw29 and that's now not guaranteed! Like most people I'm very reluctant to lose future DGW players nor transfer just for the sake of it whilst also taking hits. Do I just write this wk off and learn from my mistakes or try and do 'something'? Oh mannnnnn.
. Those brave enough to try and sort wins a lollipop
Boruc/Davies (Merts), (Coleman), (Kolarov), Chester, MOllsen (Nolan), Lallana, hazard, puncheon, (Cazorla) (Suarez Sturridge) (Jelavic) 1ft, 1.8m

I would suggest removing Cazorla and Jelavic, bringing in Rooney and X (depending on budget). Then captain Rooney. There's a good chance it would be worth a -4 hit.

Is it worth a 4pt hit to switch Curtis Davies to Luke Shaw this week. Hull no game, S'oton at CPL.

Next matches are Man City vs Hull, and S'oton vs Norwich...

BUT, Davies would have a good DGW in GW31...

    Thanks in advance for feedback

Depends if the person you're going to bench next week for Shaw has a good game or not. Also consider Chambers as a cheaper option.

      Hi Axe,
Davies is currently flagged (knock 75%). Really like Shaw myself and would suggest you will make up your potential hit points with his attacking threat so transferring him in now then reviewing for DGW may be a good option

Thanks for a lot of your opinions regarding the options that I might have.
In a nutshell, here are my options for gameweek 31

    A) Kos to Jags , Mata to Yaya , JRod to Remy
    B) Kos to Distin, Mata to Yaya, JRod to Remy/Lukaku
    C) Kos to Coleman/Baines, Mata to Ramsey/AJ , JRod to Remy/Lukaku
    D) Kos to Coleman, Mata to Yaya and JRod to Jelavic
    E) Lallana to AJ, Mata to Yaya and JRod to Remy/Lukaku
    F) Kos to Distin, Mata to AJ and JRod to Kun

Thanks for bearing with me but it took a lot of time for me as well to work out the options!

    Which one sounds best?

    A. Is Koscielny now worth keeping?

    B. Is lukaku a viable alternative to Aguero now?

    Sturridge Suarez Aguero

    Boruc Ince Ward Chambers

Can afford for GW31 with 1.0 to spare. Not going to do it though, would require 4 hits and would have to offload Hazard 😆

Not sure about doubling up on Everton defense. Think it's Baines or Coleman (or Jags if healthy). Mannone as the gk that week isn't great either with Liverpool and @Carrow road.

Cheers Viinie, was just mucking about really. Stuck with Mannone for now, don't think it's worth taking a hit for a keeper when there's potentially far better DGW options. Adrian or Howard would probably be my pick of the DGW keepers.

    Mannone* - 3.9
    Coleman* - Distin* - Collins* - Chambers - Ward
    Haz - Yaya* - Nasri* - Nolan* - Puncheon

This delaying Aguero plans seems like a decent strat given that he might not even start both games therefore a non (c) option so even less likely to hurt non owners in the short term. The only real problem I have with the plan is the hits involved to fully take adavantage of the extra cash. Is my Aguero team really so bad?

    Team Aguero -4 :

    Mannone

    Demel, Flanagan, Azpilicueta

    Mata, Yaya, Mirallas, Hazard

    Aguero, Suarez, Sturridge

    Adrian - Mannone
    Azpilicueta - Bruce - Chambers - Coleman - Ward
Bacuna - Hazard - Gerrard - Nolan - Yaya Toure
    Aguero - Sturridge - Suarez

Question is, would you opt for Silva over Gerrard seeing as City have an extra DGW?

I'm keeping S & S through this week anyway or i'd lose a fortune on them. Everton home to Cardiff, Sunderland home to Palace and City away to Hull look like decent fixtures to capitalise on early.
Usually i'd be inclined to wait and see over injuries but I won't be near a computer once the GW31 deadline opens until the monday, so that's kind of forcing my hand.

The aguero price rise does worry me especially as I am losing 0.7 on Sturridge to RVP. I feel RVP captain this week is a rare chance for a real differential jump in rank so worth the $
I may even plan to bring in Sturridge 31 after WC 30 though I normally advise against doing that as something else tends to crop up

Not great, his form has definitely dipped. But he had horrendous fixtures. 3 dgw coming up though so he's still a good shout.

He played league Cup final so definitely still first team.

How sure are people that Aguero will play both Dgw 31 following recent injury- I wonder if he might miss the hull game to save him for big Man U game and arsenal the week after.

I think his chances of starting both games are around 30%(that might be too high) but his record is so good that it might be worth it even if he only sees around 110 mins total for the DGW

    Having a WC in hand

I saw Matt (last year's champ) mention last night on Twitter that if he had a WC he would play it after Wk 31 to clear out the DGW players and build for the future DGWs.
but my thinking is that since the Wk 31 DGW players are City , Manchester Utd , Arsenal , Everton and Liverpool ; they don't really clearing out , do they??

    Thoughts

There is value to that argument if you can get a decent 11 out for 31 without using it. I'm going before 31as have nearly a full team this week and need to swap out gw29 players for dgw 31 players

I'm with you on this one.
I suppose you won't have many arsenal, so there's no big problem.
City, Everton and Pool are there to keep.
Man united? that depends how they perform then, but if they don't get big points, they are so pricey that imo clearing them is priority. And even there's no hurry.

    Good morning all 🙂

    Couple of dilemmas here

Need/want to ditch one for Baines in gw30, which one?
    a) Koshielny (double gw31)
    b) Cahill (better fixtures overall)

Which one in for Ade gw30?
    a) Lukaku
    b) Remy

I like Lukakus fixtures more, but is he defo 90 minute man nowadays?

    Thanks
