Scout Scribbles – Terry and Cech Casualties for Chelsea

Petr Cech and John Terry both limp out of Chelsea’s goalless draw with Atletico in Spain, with the keeper now ruled out for the season. Everton’s Kevin Mirallas will also miss the remaining matches due to a groin injury, whilst Sylvain Distin is a big doubt for the Toffees. Etienne Capoue is back in training for Spurs and Chris Brunt is set to be fielded as left-back for West Brom this weekend:

Jose’s Stalemate in Spain

Chelsea were without the services of Eden Hazard last night as they held Atletico Madrid to a 0-0 draw in their Champions League semi-final first-leg. Ashley Cole was handed a rare start at left back in place of the suspended Branislav Ivanovic, whilst Fernando Torres led the line against his former club in a 4-3-3 formation that saw Jose Mourinho start with three defensive midfielders in an effort to keep out his opponents.

Whilst there were no goals to light up the game, the big news came in the form of injuries to two of Chelsea’s most experienced players. Both Petr Cech and captain John Terry were forced off with problems, with Mourinho confirming post-match that the former won’t feature again this season and the latter likely to face a similar fate:

“Petr Cech’s season’s over. Don’t ask me technically, but season over. And John – we have to play the final for him to play with us.”

The Blues boss also hinted that he may field a weakened side for Sunday’s vital trip to Liverpool. With the second leg of the Atletico clash just three days after the Anfield encounter, Mourinho suggested he could make wholesale changes to his starting XI and focus on Europe instead:

“I would play with the players that are not going to play Wednesday. This is not a decision the manager can make on his own. I’m just a piece in the big club and I have to go with the decision we make collectively. If the club decides to go with everything in the direction of the Champions League, I’m ready for that. We have a big match on Wednesday to play, a big match that can give Chelsea another Champions League final.”

The Scout Says: Job well done for Jose – but at what cost? The losses of Cech and Terry look set to be a massive dent in his side’s European and domestic hopes and will also have ramifications for the Fantasy landscape over the final few weeks of the season. Chelsea’s rearguard have the highest joint ownership of any defence in the Fantasy Premier League game, having provided a constant source of returns during the second half of the season, but that could all be set to change without their captain controlling the backline and their number one goalkeeper between the sticks. Consequently, owners of Liverpool’s attacking assets will be licking their lips at the thought of the likes of Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling coming up against an under-strength Chelsea defence this Sunday, with the away side likely to rely on the inconsistent David Luiz to fill in at the back. For those who still believe Mourinho’s men can continue their defensive form for the last three games of the campaign, Mark Schwarzer’s budget 4.5 price-tag and certainty of starts will entice.

INJURY PROBLEMS FOR EVERTON

Roberto Martinez has confirmed that Kevin Mirallas will miss the last three fixtures of the season after limping out of Sunday’s victory over Manchester United. The Belgian sustained a groin injury in the latter stages of the match and will now sit out the remainder of the campaign.

“Kevin’s scans came back and they have revealed a small tear in his groin. He is going to be out for the season which is a real disappointment and a shame because he was in a phenomenal moment of form. It is not a major injury. It could be anything up to five or six weeks, and that’s looking at the worst-case scenario. Kevin is a quick healer and I would be surprised if he is not available after three or four weeks.”

Martinez also revealed that Sylvain Distin is a doubt for this weekend, having been withdrawn at half-time on Sunday with a hamstring injury:

“It’s very much doubtful. The scans revealed something of a problem but until the swelling clears it is impossible make the right diagnosis. In the next 48 hours we will find out how long Sylvain is going to be out.”

The Scout Says: Yesterday’s news will have come as a bitter blow for Mirallas’ 12% ownership, especially the 12,000 managers who snapped up the Belgian following his goalscoring performance last weekend. Attacking returns in each of his last five performances has seen the wide man acquire something of a late-season bandwagon, despite his continued risk of rotation. The midfielder’s injury now brings the 5.4-priced Gerard Deulofeu firmly back on to our radars; the on-loan Barcelona youngster is likely to replace Mirallas in the starting line-up for the remaining three fixtures of Everton’s season and will be keen to end his loan spell with a flourish. However, his classification as a forward is still a huge stumbling block. Meanwhile Distin’s hamstring complaint could be set to further frustrate his owners, with the centre-back having already missed out on clean sheet points against Manchester United due to his early withdrawal. John Stones is available for a meagre 4.2 and looks the perfect alternative to Distin for those wanting a slice of the Toffees’ in-form defence, who don’t have budget to spare.

CAPOUE RETURNS TO TRAINING

Tottenham midfielder Etienne Capoue back in training, having failed to feature since a 1-0 loss to Norwich in February. Spurs boss Tim Sherwood was, however, quick to emphasise the need to ease the Frenchman back into action after his ankle injury.

“‘It’s great to see him back in training but he has been out for two months, so we have to be careful. We’ll continue to monitor him closely.”

The Scout Says: Despite Capoue returning to full training, Sherwood’s stressing of how “careful” he needs to be with the midfielder means that he looks unlikely to challenge Nacer Chadli or Paulinho for a role in the centre of midfield in the remaining weeks of the season. The 7.1-priced Cristian Eriksen remains the most enticing option in the Spurs midfield, although Aaron Lennon – with two assists in his last two games – looks a decent differential for his side’s strong closing schedule (sto, whm, AVL).

Brunt Set for Defensive Stint

West Brom boss Pepe Mel has admitted he is likely to play Chris Brunt at left-back in the weekend home encounter against West Ham, with Liam Ridgewell almost certain to be ruled out with a knee problem:

“I think he can do a good job in that position. He’s the best option right now. It really is the most important of games for us. It’s a cup final and can be THE game to spur us on and give us life. It’s vital.”

The Scout Says: Having returned from injury in time for his side’s previous home game with Spurs, Brunt grabbed a goal in the 3-3 draw to suggest he could yet play a pivotal part in the Baggies’ last few matches. A shift to defence will more or less kill any appeal, with Graham Dorrans and Morgan Amalfitano the best options amongst the West Brom midfield – both have notched twice in the last four and, priced at 4.4 and 4.2 respectively, have a double Gameweek 37 on either side of home encounters with the Hammers and Stoke.

Chelsea will not be resting players this weekend.

They will believe that they can beat Liverpool & reduce their lead to 2 points with 2 games to go.

Sure Jose has already started the mind games for this weekend, trying to influence the refs decisions by making those statements last weekend.

I cant make it any easier for you.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Suarez for Captain

It's been a no brainer for most of the season, but with Chelsea coming to Anfield, many are looking elsewhere. Suarez is currently in just fourth in the Captain's poll, with managers instead preferring to place the arm band on Ramsey or Rooney.

But with Mourinho rumoured to be set to field a weakened side is it perhaps wiser to stick with Suarez?
    http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/apr/23/jose-mourinho-chelsea-liverpool-abramovich

Who will you be captaining this weekend? Is Mourinho playing mind games, or will Chelsea genuinely turn up at Anfield as lambs to the Suarez slaughter?

Chelsea can still field a strong back four with Azpi, Ivan, Cahill and Cole plus the defensive tactics will still remain in place.

      No way.
Chelsea won't concede much against Liverpool regardless how bad team they field.

I guess this will be the backline:

      Schwarzer
      Kalas-Ivanovic-Cahill-Cole
      Matic-Lampard-Mikel
      Salah-Ba-Schurrle

      A) JT out for Kos for -4

      B) JT out for zaba -4

      C) JT out for Manu defender -4

      D) play WARDINHO

in total, yes, but when deciding about these transfers its only a further -4.

          Otherwise you should have put:
          D) Play Wardinho -4

Because people saw an option without a hit and took that because it looked like it was 8 points less of a hit, when in reality it was only a further 4.

I'm just being annoying and particular, ignore me, play Ward 😀

    http://www.theguardian.com/football/2009/may/24/gerard-pique-barcelona-champions-league

Piqué's grandfather was even a club director, and one day he invited Barcelona's coach Louis van Gaal to lunch. "This," he said, introducing the young Gerard, "is my grandson – a centre-back for Barcelona's youth team." Van Gaal looked at Piqué and, without warning, pushed him over. Towering above the 14- year-old, he barked: "You're too weak to be a Barcelona defender."

                    In a nutshell:-
The club would.have done.a Leeds if Shepherd stayed in, we were badly in.debt
Kinnear is the one to point the finger at for the failed transfers
We are not a top 4 club so of.course were going.to sell our best players if offers come in, we don't have ucl revenue to be able to refuse the overtures
Pardew has done better with the club overall than the previous 5 managers

Who should be ManU's next manager? With a strict scientific process I've reduced the options to these four:

    A) Stick to Giggs
    B) Phil Neville
    C) Giggsy's brothers wife
    D) Van Gaal's balls

I really do not see the problem here. Either he's playing mind-games with LFC, or he genuinely feels he has to rotate some at the end of a rough season to prioritize CL over a very unlikely PL title bid. You obviously can't play the same starting 11 every week, especially when in CL.

Not at all. Dead serious. These players, Ronaldo in particular, don't make their teams much better, arguably not at all. the best players are those who lift their teams the most. Zlatan tops my list, after him it's tighter.

Ronaldo has carried Madrid for the last 3 seasons and Barcelona are a 1 man team this year?

Messi has been the single reason for Barcelona's success for the last 2 years, Xavi is past it and plays deep, Iniesta only shows up for big games, and Neymar has sucked.

Where would Madrid be without Ronaldo's 174 goals in 162 apps?

no. Rubbish. I'm not saying Messi helps his team enough either. Although Barca has become more and more dependent on him, if you really want to compare with Xavi, check last season matches when Xavi didn't start. It's a funny phenomenon you will witness there: they have been unable to score and often been drawing or even losing against significantly weaker opponents, and taken Xavi in during last 30 minutes, often less time, and ended up winning the match. He has still been very important for them, arguably more important than Messi. Messi does dominate that team though, they have grown dependent on him, but does he do that positively? Does he make those other guys play that much better? No, not really, he just does individually pretty awesome thing.

Ronaldo really has not been carrying his team. Proof: when he's been injured, they've done just as well as when he's been there. He, like Messi, dominates the game of his team, but that is even more negative. He has reduced a team of world class stars to a bunch of sidekicks serving his personal goals. Why he scores so much is that his sidekicks play him all those chances to get his scoring tally higher. he misses more sitters than anybody in the world. Had he not scored those goals, somebody else would have. And most of his goals are not big, decisive goals. Rahter just another 2 added when they're already winning against the FC Low Table Losers.

Anyway, I'm not saying these are bad players, although it may sound like that above. That's just because I'm responding to this "best player in the world" claim. They're both very top of the world individual players, no doubt. But not the best players in the world, and neither one would fit in my ideal XI. If I was managing either Barca or Real, I would request the chair to cash on the big star.

You're digging a hole for yourself. Ronaldo's goalscoring record is phenomenal. No one expected Puskas's goalscoring record rate to ever get beaten, yet he's obliterated it. Massive player, one of the best ever. Look what happened when Portugal played Sweden in the euro qualifier.

Yeah. Goal scoring record. And then what? You think being the world's best player is just a goal scoring record? Goals scored against weak opponents in 6-0 matches in a team full of stars that are made to create those chances to him. It's saddening that clubs as big as Barca and Real are prioritizing goal scoring records of single players instead of playing their best as teams. These two players are way overrated because of those scoring records.

Messi is phenomenal individual though. Does amazing things with ball. Much more amazing than Cristiano Ronaldo, for that matter. Individually maybe the most skilled player of all history. Still not the best player.

Btw, look at the teams of Portugal and Sweden. that Sweden was even there is amazing from Zlatan. Portugal has a really good overall team. That they had to go to playoffs despite playing in a very easy group was not very good from them.

No disrespect, but I honestly don't know what you're talking about. The sheer presence of a player like Ronaldo lifts the team they play for, opens up space, has the opposition backtracking, allows the Real defence to play higher lines etc. etc etc.

And no disrespect to you either, but to my mind his presence doesn't seem to do any good to other players. Real's players are not playing better with Ronaldo than without him. Same with Portugal. It's annoying to watch a groups of world class players being so mitigated due to presence of one decided star player. It's not as if other attacking players didn't do those things. But Ronaldo makes their attack quite one-dimensional and somehow is able to make other attacking players less good.

Against Barcelona, in that crazy 4-3 defeat (thanks Ramos and Alonso!), their attack was really creative and good just because Ronaldo and Bale appeared to have agreed to get their roles reduced a bit and played for the team.

It's a strange decision certainly and I'm assuming financially motivated in it's timing - i.e. failure to qualify for CL probably meant they could get away with less of a pay off.

As has been mentioned elsewhere, the Glazers track record in US is not of patient stewards but more a revolving door for anything other than instant success - Ferguson was successful AND sacred, so no way he could be shifted even if they wanted to.

Not that they won't be matching most other clubs in this respect but I think it'll spell another brick in the United wall falling down. They may have the most famous club in the world, but with their debt and stock market responsibilities, they simply don't have the same financial muscle and freedom as City, Chelsea or the Spanish giants to outbid all rivals.

Nor do they have CL (or even European football) to offer top stars or even a talented pool of players that others would dream of sitting alongside. Instead there's a couple that are world class when fit/interested (RVP and Rooney, maybe Mata) and some with great potential (De Gea, Jones, Smalling, Janujaz, Hernandez and Wellbeck). Beyond that, they have a lot of just good but not consistently great players that have been over-rated due to the performance of the team (Carrick, Cleverly, Fellaini, Rafael, Hernandez, Kagawa, Fletcher) and a clutch that are either past their best, lost interest, largely injured or just not good enough (Nani, Valencia, Buttner, Giggs, Young, Buttner, Ferdinand, Vidic).

For me the squad was just as weak (albeit a bit younger) last year and they massively overachieved with an inspiring/terrifying leader. As soon as Ferguson left, the veil dropped and we saw just how scrawny the individuals were. Oddly enough, one of the things Moyes was definitely good at elsewhere was building strong team spirit, although that relied on the fact he'd brought in the right characters and built his own team - in this case he was inheriting the arse end of someone elses.

His major failing for me was in the summer - where he should have had a proper clear out and a signing spree bringing in a spine of players he could trust that were in some respect his own, he showed too much respect to Ferguson and the the club and did very little.

I agree with Savage's summation on this one, they need a massive clear out and build around a few genuine stars (Mata, RVP, Rooney, De Gea), some promising youth (Jones, Smalling, Januzaj and Wellbeck) and keep 1 or 2 of the dependables (Carrick and perhaps Fletcher). Everyone else can and should push off.

Marr...could you change your grav please to one that isn't used as our logo and Mark's grav.

Even with the colour change it could confuse people.

            cheers.

It feels so strange curbing those natural instincts on early transfers because it's so late in the season.
I would have been all over Ramsey on the Sunday night and now he's risen 0.3.
I don't even know why I'm waiting. Maybe Aguero will be ruled out at the press conference. That would be nice.

If LFC weren't right up there I would consider it. This my first FPL season were we are challenging and it's making it difficult for me.
