Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 36 – Sunday

Yaya Toure grabs a goal and assist upon his return from a groin injury as City end Palace’s winning run. A much-changed Chelsea blow the title race wide open with a resilient rearguard display at Anfield, whilst Connor Wickham bags a brace as Sunderland sweep aside Cardiff to climb out of the bottom three:

Toure Back in the Points
The Ivorian played a part in both City’s goals as Manuel Pellegrini’s side eased past Palace at Selhurst Park. Sold by over 500, 000 Fantasy Premier League managers after limping out of the first match of City’s double Gameweek 34, Toure’s immediate impact in yesterday’s vital win is set to get the bandwagon back underway ahead of next week’s pair of fixtures. Now down to 10.1, he faces Everton and Villa before a final day home encounter with West Ham, and with City’s bid for the title now firmly back in their own hands, we can expect Pellegrini to go on the attack as he looks to overhaul Liverpool at the summit.

Samir Nasri also chipped in with an assist to keep his tally ticking over. The Frenchman now has two goals and four assists in his last eight, but despite his consistent displays, some owners may still be eyeing up a swap for Toure – the latter’s 31-point haul in double Gameweek 31 is a reminder of his capabilities, whilst Nasri, by comparison, has managed just two sets of double figures all season.

Pellegrini Keeps Faith in a 4-4-2
Manuel Pellegrini continued with a two-man frontline for the trip to Selhurst Park as City ended the hosts’ five-match winning run. Edin Dzeko was handed the chance to partner Sergio Aguero once again, and whilst the latter drew a rare blank before being withdrawn on 78 minutes, the Bosnian justified his manager’s decision by scoring for the first time in four appearances. With Alvaro Negredo still struggling for form, Dzeko has now started each of the last two alongside Aguero and seems likely to retain his start for the double – priced at just 7.1, his 15% of owners may be persuaded to hold after yesterday’s impressive showing, though there’s no doubt Aguero and Toure will be the two main names on shopping lists this week.

Wickham the Black Cats’ Talisman
A brace from Connor Wickham took his tally to five goals in the last three Gameweeks as Sunderland’s great escape picked up pace. With an assist and maximum bonus also accrued in the 4-0 win over Cardiff, Wickham has now delivered 37 points in his last trio of appearances, and with a price tag of just 4.6, his exploits look certain to earn him plenty of new owners before next weekend’s double Gameweek deadline. Granted, the weekend trip to United is far from straightforward, but with a midweek home clash against West Brom and a Stadium of Light showdown against Swansea on the final day of the season, Wickham looks likely to play a major part in the last few fixtures for Gus Poyet’s side.

Borini and Giaccherini also in the Points
The Italian duo both chipped in with a goal and assist apiece in the rout. Borini benefitted from penalty duties for the second match in succession, having also slotted home a spot-kick in the win at Chelsea – priced at 6.2 and fielded on the left, though, he remains less likely to pick up new owners due to Wickham’s cheaper price tag and central role. Giaccherini’s contribution off the bench may be somewhat disconcerting for Adam Johnson owners ahead of the double, however. The latter served up a fifth successive blank yesterday, whilst Giacherrini has now produced a goal and three assists in three brief sub appearances – his displays may just persuade Poyet he is worthy of a starting berth, given Johnson’s comparative lack of form.

Bardsley on the Bench
Suspended for the previous two matches, the Black Cats full-back seems to have fallen down the pecking order after being handed a spot on the bench yesterday. Poyet opted for an unchanged defence and retained Santiago Vergini on the right of the back-four as Sunderland earned a first clean sheet since Gameweek 30. With an average of 4.6 points per game, Vito Mannone remains the best bet for those looking to invest in the Black Cats’ backline ahead of the double, though Marcos Alonso’s attacking threat is also an option – the 4.5-priced Spaniard looks the likeliest defender to deliver the points in light of Bardsley’s omission.

Jose Rings the Changes as Blues Shock Anfield
Earlier in the week, the Chelsea boss threatened to make sweeping changes to his starting XI for yesterday’s clash, and he was true to his word. With the second leg of the Champions League semi-final clash against Atletico Madrid now only two days away, Jose Mourinho made seven alterations to his line-up, drafting in previously peripheral figures such as Tomas Kalas, John Obi-Mikel and Ashley Cole in a 4-3-3 formation. Despite the loss of Petr Cech and John Terry to injury, Mourinho dropped Gary Cahill to the bench yet still managed to defy the odds with a counter-attacking masterclass as Chelsea served up their seventeenth shut-out of the season. Those holding the Blues main assets will be somewhat worried by yesterday’s line-up, though – if the London club progress to the Champions League Final, Mourinho – whose side now see out the season with games against Norwich and Cardiff – could well be set to continue with his rotation policy in light of yesterday’s success.

Liverpool Stutter as Sturridge Returns
The Reds’ 11-match winning streak came crashing to an end as Luis Suarez and co failed to break down the Chelsea defensive wall. Cahill’s late introduction saw Mourinho switch to a five-man backline, and with no way through, Liverpool’s title chances were dealt a huge blow as Demba Ba and former Brendan Rodgers target Willian grabbed the goals. Daniel Sturridge was fit enough only for a second-half sub role after a recovering from a recent hamstring problem and the England star looks likely to return to the starting line-up for next weekend’s crucial trip to Selhurst Park – a move to the midfield diamond looks on the cards as the Merseysiders attempt to re-establish their position at the summit after yesterday’s morale-sapping display.

Liverpool fans, Are you happy that our fate now rests in Everton's hands? (no offence West ham and Villa). I think if thats anything less than a win for City then we win the league with 86 points but its a big ask. Would be nice if Toons did something tonight to give them extra incentive but alas, thats an even bigger ask 🙁

No Barry is a huge loss, people don't realise that he's done a magnificent job tying the midfield together.

Oh yeah he has, 100% agreed, but people are letting the Southampton result sway their opinions of Everton a small bit I think. They're still a good squad and McCarthy has been almost as immense as Barry in midfield.. I just don't think its a full blown conclusion.

Not at all, that's the beauty of it but you would have to fancy City quite heavily. Not saying there won't be some surprises and very conflicted Evertonians 😉

An Everton side without Barry, possibly without both Distin and Jags and a slight chance of no Baines. It is very hard to see City losing but you never know, that's the beauty of the game. Don't write off Villa, very much so in a relegation fight.

We know Skrtel will do his bit. 😉 Yeah, that's the problem. You can probably count on City improving their goal diff by 4 - 5 minimum. And Liverpool to concede at least a couple in each of theirs. So they're going to have to score 7-8+ in each game. They better be televised. 😀

Nearly as controversial as QPR suddenly not being arsed playing football for City's late winners 😆

The match fixing squad would be out giving out but Newcastle would be the perfect team to ship that many, nothing to play for and are not good at all right now.

      Coin flip.

Yaya - everyone has him so if he scores your rank will suffer without him. City pushing hard for the title and he will be most likely involved in their goals.

Mata - 2 home games, United still pushing for 6th, games against weak defenced opponents. Mata on form with less ownership

I find it funny that media and fans are calling chelsea's win a 'tactical masterstroke'. West ham and stoke fans have rebelled against this type of football from their own teams and the media and fans from other clubs regularly deride it. It might sound like sour grapes from a liverpool supporter but they did the same thing under houllier (although they did at least try to use the counter attack instead of just kicking to corners) and it was boring, just as yesterday's match was. If playing 5 defenders and 3 defensive midfielders and time wasting for the entire 90 minutes makes mourinho a tactical genius football is in a sorry state, and it's not just yesterday, Chelsea's football has been dour since the turn of the year and they are back playing the type of football that got mourinho sacked by abromovic in the first place. I'm sure chelsea and anti liverpool fans won't agree with this but i've been saying the same thing for months and its not just because liverpool got beat yesterday.

Yes, but who's to say that playing defensive football is a 'bad' thing? It's a perfectly viable strategy. In fact, in most sports, people would say 'offense wins games, defense wins championships.'

I get the frustration, I've been in the same shoes, supporting a team playing attacking & attractive football against a stifling defense, but it is part of the game.

The manager aims for 3 points. He got 3 points.

Playing his usual style against Liverpool would be suicide with their form. The time wasting aimed to aggravate the fans and Liverpool players and it worked.

Same style he played against Atletico to make sure the hoe advantage would be still there. It is very boring and we'd hate to see it every week but it does work in all fairness when needed

Don't get me wrong, I fully agree it is effective, just as it was for liverpool a decade ago, but what really bugs me is the media lauding it as a tactical masterstroke. I'm from Ireland and thee GAA have changed rules and introduced a black card for cynical fouling to promote positive play as almost every team had resorted to negative football to win games and it was dour to watch. I would just prefer if the media called it what it was, a dour negative performance, effective nonetheless!

This was a big match, Mourinho know Pool attack so he set out to frustrate and defend. He threw in the mind games too. It was boring football but it worked.

If I was a Pool fan I'd be questioning BR just as much because, in my opinion, he got it wrong yesterday. The attacking game is brilliant but know your opponent, if Liverpool had sat back, not got sucked in and winding up bringing all their defenders high up, they could have got the 0-0. That would have, in my opinion, won them the league. Yet they didn't do that. I mean Chelsea camped in their own half and still scored two goals.

Maybe you are right and Rodgers let emotions rule but as a liverpool fan I think i would have found it very frustrating if the team did that. I guess the fact that mourinho is so brash and doesnt care about criticism means the heart never rules the head with him. But to be fair if it wasn't for an unfortunate slip chelsea probably wouldnt have scored either goal as the second was a consequence of having 10 men camped in the chelsea penalty area trying to find an equaliser.

And sometimes you need your team to pay unattractive football. They've been wonderful all season, I think they would have been forgiven for one defensive game!

That's all part of Mourinho's act, he draws media attention to take it off his players and lower the pressure.

Now you are right, it was a slip but Mou was waiting for a mistake, that was his game. If it hadn't been the Stevie slip it could have been something else. I do have tremendous sympathy, awful feeling when it hacienda but I hope it doesn't take away from how great the season has been for Pool.

The problem as a fan of one of the team you mention, is that you can tolerate this set up on occasion as a means to justify a point or three (like we did away to Chelsea), but you its intolerable when its used every game and often results in a loss.

WHU fans are charged the fourth highest prices in the league (I pay over £800 for my ST) so you expect the football and entertainment to at least aspire to match that..

As for Chelsea and Mourinho, well done to them. It does make me laugh when managers turn around and say "they parked the bus" "didnt try to win" etc, why should a manager play into the opposition's hands?

Fair point and i agree, I think WHU fans just want to see the flair when playing against their equals and they arent getting to see that, the team is definitely good enough to score a lot of goals against mid table opposition but sam is willing to settle for 1-0's but again my real argument is with the media lauding jose mourinho as if he has done something special when he clearly hasn't.

Is the common thought that evra will play the remaining games?

He looks the safest but he's far from safe, buttner might grab a game off him courtesy of Giggsy's "giving everyone a game"

I'd ship Puncheon instead of Gerrard, Liverpool have an easy game in GW38 against Newcastle and might need to go for a 7-0 to win the league or something.

If Giggs can give Cleverly a game..he can also give Will Keane also a chance..

Barsley to Alonso for a hit? Instead of playing Coleman (MCI) or Ward (LIV) 🙁
