World Cup 2014

World Cup 2014 – Team Analysis – Spain

The final team in our analysis of Group B is the defending champions, Spain. Vicente del Bosque’s men get their campaign underway with a repeat of the 2010 World Cup Final against Holland on Friday June 13 at 8pm, before squaring up to Mexico five days later at 8pm and then facing the rank outsiders, Australia, on Monday June 23 at 5pm:

Road to Qualification

The Spanish topped a five-team group including France, Finland, Georgia and Belarus after winning six and drawing two of their eight fixtures. Defensively-sound, they registered five clean sheets and conceded just three goals, though they were relatively unimpressive at the other end of the pitch – scoring just 14 times, they netted more than twice on just one occasion, with a 4-0 win over Belarus.

Most Starts Sergio Ramos (8), Xavi, Sergio Busquets (7), Andres Iniesta, Pedro, Alvaro Arbeloa (6), Iker Casillas, Jordi Alba, Gerard Pique, David Silva, Cesc Fabregas (5)

Most Goals Pedro (4), Alvaro Negredo (3), Sergio Ramos, Jordi Alba (2)

Most Assists Cesc Fabregas (3), David Silva, Pedro (2)

The Key Targets

Recent friendly matches suggest Del Bosque’s side are struggling to rediscover their rhythm ahead of next month’s tournament. A narrow 2-1 win over Equatorial Guinea was followed by defeat to South Africa before the Spaniards edged past Italy 1-0 in Diego Costa’s first appearance up front. Last year’s 3-0 Confederations Cup Final defeat at the hands of Brazil perhaps hinted that some of Del Bosque’s ageing squad could struggle in the conditions but the manager is likely to stay true to his tried and trusted regulars.

At the back, Spain don’t have their problems to seek. Iker Casillas played just two league games for Real Madrid all season and has had to rely on cup competitions for minutes – he is available for 6.2 inFantasyiTeam. Alvaro Arbeloa is now retired, with Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta likely to take over the right-back berth, whilst Barcelona pair Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba (both priced at 6.4 in FantasyiTeam) have been blighted by injury and made just 26 and 14 starts in La Liga last season respectively. Azpilicueta should benefit from a lower price across the Fantasy games and is available for 5.9 inFantasyiTeam, though Alba, along with Sergio Ramos, netted twice during the qualifiers and carries a real threat down the left. Ramos arrives in fine form, having scored six times for Real Madrid this season, and costs 6.3 of your FantasyiTeam budget.

In the centre, Sergio Busquets offers little in the way of going forward and his appeal is limited to those games which reward defensive contributions. Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Xavi Alonso will surely continue as mainstays in Del Bosque’s XI; the former two are similarly-priced in FantasyiTeam at 7.4 and 7.6 respectively, with the Real Madrid man setting you back 6.0. Up top, Diego Costa – providing he can fully recover from a hamstring complaint – is the in-form forward at Spain’s disposal, having notched 27 times in La Liga for Atletico Madrid; his recent form is reflected in his price, though, with Costa setting you back 9.9 in FantasyiTeam.

The Long Shots

Top scorer in qualification with four goals and a pair of assists, Pedro started all but one of the last seven group games. The Barcelona star notched 15 times in the recent league campaign and could remain under the radar as many opt for Costa instead – certainly, he’s kinder on the budget at 8.7 in FantasyiTeam.

Both Cesc Fabregas and David Silva (7.2 and 7.5 in FantasyiTeam) started five of the qualifiers and produced three and two assists respectively. Neither are nailed-on in the first XI, though there’s every chance the former could operate as a “false nine” if Costa’s injury problems re-surface – the City man looks more of a punt but could still prove a canny acquisition off the bench if Del Bosque’s team are struggling to break down opponents.

Inter spent 70 million euros for the main squad that won the "Triplete" (J. Cesar, Maicon, Lucio, Samuel, Chivu, Cambiasso, Thiago Motta, Sneijder, Pandev, Eto'o and Milito). In the summer of 2009 they sold Ibrahimovic for 95 million euros(60 million cash plus Eto'o). Real Madrid spent 194 million euros just for CR7 and Bale and they only won the Champions League.

I think Spain are mostly being written off because people are bored of them winning. They conceded just 6 goals in the 21 games they played in winning Euro 2008/2012/World Cup 2010, and in the knockout stages of those major competitions, they kept 10 clean sheets in a row. For me they are still the team to beat, despite Brazil’s home advantage, and here’s why (apologies in advance for the long post!)

The convincing 3-0 defeat against Brazil in the Confederations Cup final is a major reason they're not seen as favourites. Brazil relentlessly pressed and harried a very tired looking Spain side, burst into the lead, and then sat back in relative comfort. Spain's success comes from their ability to completely control games with possession, not concede, then find a way to score by tiring the opposition out with their creative players, as well as the incredible depth of their attacking options off the bench. This is a tactic which works even better in hot conditions. They lost to Brazil that night because they didn’t have any of their usual control, but I think it's less likely to happen again for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, Spain’s semi-final was a day later than Brazil’s, but whilst the hosts beat Uruguay in 90 minutes, Spain came through after a gruelling penalty shoot-out. In the World Cup though, there is an extra day between the semi-finals and the finals, so such a situation would have less impact. More importantly, Xabi Alonso missed the tournament last summer, so rather than playing with their usual double pivot, Busquets was the sole holding midfielder, playing in a midfield three with Xavi and Iniesta, a la Barcelona. Unlike Spain, Barcelona aren’t known for their defensive solidity, and whilst Spain played some great football with this midfield, their games were far more open.
If Alonso is back alongside Busquets though, whilst they become significantly more boring, they’re also significantly harder to beat. Iniesta moves to one of the wide positions in this formation, though he constantly moves inside, with Alba constantly getting forwards and maintaining width down the left hand side. Azpilicueta’s displays under Mourinho this season suggest he is more than capable of balancing things out on the other flank, playing the Arbeloa role of an unusually defensive full back for modern times. With Xabi, they keep the ball better due to having another ball player in the middle of the park, as well as protecting the defence better with another holding midfielder. Crucially though, they become almost impossible to press in the way Brazil did in that final. Oscar could put pressure on Busquets, Luiz Gustavo on Xavi, and Paulinho on Iniesta, whilst Brazil’s front three rushed the Spanish back four into making mistakes. Another holding midfielder not only gives another short out-ball for a back four under pressure, but pressing both Xabi and Busquets means bringing Paulinho or Luiz Gustavo high up the pitch. Iniesta’s movement inside from the flank constantly finds him in space for a forward pass in this situation, and so it becomes almost inevitable that Spain dominate the midfield.

Of course, this guarantees neither that Spain will win the tournament, nor that their players are particularly good fantasy options. It remains to be seen whether or not Spain will return to this shape, and even if they do, it is an incredibly cautious way of approaching games, if an effective one. They force matches to be tight and cagey affairs by making the opposition sit back and defend, and focusing more on keeping possession than scoring goals. If they make one mistake defensively and their opponent holds firm, then they will be out, and whilst their recent record in penalty shoot-outs is excellent, it is conceivable that this is another way they might slip up. Still, if Spain play against the Netherlands with all four of Busquets, Alonso, Xavi and Iniesta, I recommend you load up on their defence from then on (ideally Ramos or Alba, given their attacking potential), but be cautious of their attacking options, with the possible exception of Iniesta, who is probably rivalled only by Zidane as a big match player in recent years.

    @ ENR

I'm new to this FFS UEFA competition. From tomorrow I'm going to be bit busy for a week or so. I'm going to be back for June 3rd or 4th here on FFS.

Don't think I'm ready enough to lead a team so I'll not apply for the Armband fight. I support Belgian as you can see I'm a loyal Eden Hazard fan so I'd be very happy if I can get place in Belgium Team. Like I said I'll be back by 4th June so I'm afraid I wouldn't get place in a team like Belgium. Can you please reserve a place for me or inform the Belgium Captain about me? 🙂

Wait a second. I'm taking it from the rules that you won't be able to take out a player that scores poorly for a player in your subs that plays the following day?

' You can change every player in your line-up that has not already played during the current round for any other relevant player in your squad that hasn’t already played.

If you don`t make any changes to your team the current team will continue to score points for you'

I finished with a cool 68.5 and got a first with the modal rule 😀 I'd like to clarify that I was well aware of what I needed and put the effort in to make sure my dissertation was the 70+ I needed (I got 71 😎 )

I now live and work in Bedford, what I like to call the road centre of britain. The M1, M25 and A1(M) all coverge nicely here. But otherwise its the middle of nowhere.

Hehe true, but I suspect it's my mates who are more pleased as I carried a few of them to their first classes 😉

One had to get like 84% or something in final semester and just got it by the skin of his teeth.

I got 75 for my dissertation, which was exactly what I was aiming for all year. Just glad that year of hell is over tbh.

I work in bridges, so deal with the highways guys a lot. Not got a clue what they actually do, and neither do they.

I carried a few of my mates through the batchelors, then they got annoyed when i refused to get them a masters. The way I saw it a degree is one thing, but a job where you can kill people is another.

Has anyone emailed the McDonald's people about clarification of the rules? Surely the way its setup now takes away a lot and will have people playing 5 at the back and picking up people like Busquets rather than actual goal scorers? Doesn't sound like it would be too much fun for the casual!

Yes, but people like us have a much better chance, compared to random people entering blind, just for fun. Especially for the first match day/week. They'll get crucified the first time, might catch on a bit and jump on the bandwagons after the first week, but it could be too late for them then!

I would, but I am going on site pretty soon for the next year and I cant help but feel that will be my life wiped out completely. There are three of us in our site supervision team and the head guy is splitting his time between two sites. Me and Tom are both very inexperienced for the roles were taking on so I am expecting long long hours. And lets be honest here I cant play ENR's game without being a captain or similiar, too well known to take a back seat.

I think there's a few well known posters that want to take part without being captain.

Used to have the same problem in my job a few years back, steep lurking curve so had to put the hours in to get jobs done on budget. Completely different job but I suspect it gets easier over time.
