World Cup 2014

World Cup 2014 – PlayON Rule Guide

After giving you the heads-up about the brand new World Cup website launched by PlayON yesterday at www.playon.co , we now turn our attention to the rule set as the minutes quickly tick away before tomorrow’s opener between Brazil and Croatia:

Team Selection

PlayON is running Gameweeks (where you pick teams and enter one-on-one and multiplayer games) for all groups as well as for each individual group so you can pick players from all 32 countries or from just the four countries in a particular group.

You have a budget of £100m to spend on XI players in a 4-4-2 formation but, unlike most other Fantasy games, PlayON does not place any limit on the number of players you can select from any given country – providing it’s within your budgetary restrictions you can pick as many as you want from an individual nation.

Fantasy managers must save their team of XI two hours prior to the start of each Gameweek, with the deadline for Round 1 All Groups and Round 1 Group A at 19.00 tomorrow evening. A new addition to PlayON for the World Cup is being able to pick multiple teams, so you can pick up to three different teams in each Gameweek, thus increasing your chances of success.

Games

As we mentioned in yesterday’s intro article, PlayON offers Fantasy managers the option to play for cash.

New game types for the World Cup are multiplier games, where you can double or treble your money, as well as limit entry games so rather than playing against hundreds of people, you can enter games with a maximum of 5, 10 or 20 entrants.

You can also opt for One-on-One games against your mates or Ambassadors – including Fantasy Football Scout, OptaJoe and Robbie Fowler – for free or for cash.

One other exciting new addition for the World Cup is in-play games, which are due to be released over the coming days. This will enable Fantasy managers to continue to enter their teams into games as the matches are unfolding. More on this over the coming days.

Player Prices

PlayON differs from most Fantasy games in that player prices are re-evaluated in accordance with the previous game’s events. If a budget midfielder bags a brace in the opening round of fixtures, you can expect a price hike prior to his next appearance – essentially, this ensures PlayON is one of the most dynamic Fantasy games around, with no two rounds of player prices the same.

Scoring Points

At the back, keepers are awarded 100 points for every save made, though a penalty stop will earn 750 points. Only goalkeepers and defenders benefit from clean sheets, earning 500 points apiece, whilst they also collect 50 points for every registered clearance – on the downside, they lose 250 points for every goal conceded.

In every other aspect of the Scoring Matrix, the points accrued are the same regardless of player classification. For further defensive actions, a tackle will earn your player 25 points, whilst an interception is looked upon as more valuable and will help collect 50 points – ball winners and those with the ability to break up opponents’ play are smiled upon kindly.

Unsurprisingly, finding the net is afforded the highest reward, with 1,000 points accrued, whilst providing an assist will earn your player 400 points. Picking players with a keen eye for goal is also a canny tactic in PlayON – a shot on target will help 200 points, whether it’s a five-yard sitter into the keeper’s arms or a speculative 40-yard daisy-cutter.

Keepers, defenders, midfielders and forwards all earn five points for every five minutes played – selecting key players who won’t be replaced in the latter stages of matches looks a handy plan, then. Avoiding card-happy players is also worth considering – a yellow card takes 250 points from a player’s total, whilst a red card deducts a hefty 500 points.

PlayON also has a Live Matchday, which updates in real time, thus allowing Fantasy managers to keep an eye on how their teams are performing. As mentioned above, in-play games are being released over the coming days.

Leaderboard

PlayON’s Top 5 Leaderboard offers another chance of winning some cash. The Leaderboard takes your top 5 Gameweek scores over the course of the World Cup and adds them together. No problem if you miss the start of the tournament or miss any given Gameweek, you have 31 Gameweeks to score points in, with your top 5 counting for the Leaderboard. The Fantasy manager with the highest total from their top 5 scores wins £500. It’s worth noting that only teams entered into at least one real money game in the Gameweek count towards the total.

We will follow up with our Round 1 player picks article tomorrow but for now, head over to www.playon.co to pick your teams and enter some games.

Hi to all the Deadzone friends that I made here over the past few years.

I'm playing an online world cup game where I have to predict the results. I get 5pts for the correct result and an extra 3pts for the correct score as well. Picking a draw would give me 10pts. This is the basic format where I have to select one of 5 possible results.

    brazil 2+___BRAZIL 1___draw___croatia 1___croatia 2+

What do you guys think of my first round picks? my picks are in CAPS

    brazil v croatia 1: BRAZIL 1
    mexico v cameroon: MEXICO 1
    netherlands v spain: DRAW
    chili v australia: CHILI 2+
    colombia v greece: COLOMBIA 2+
uruguay v costa rica: URUGUAY 1
    england v itali: DRAW
ivory coast v japan: IVORY COAST 1
    switzerland v equador SWITZERLAND 2+
    france v honduras: FRANCE 2+
    argentina v bosn&herz: ARGENTINA 2+

Are those decent picks? what would you go with?

BTW those who might be interested in playing this game can sign up at http://dreamteam.nzherald.co.nz/
Let me know if you are interested and I can set up a league

Puts me off Ozil too. Playing deeper and getting hauled off after 70mins for others to come on and score doesn't sound too appealing.

Hello Deadzone, hope all is well 🙂

I've just set up a McDonalds FIFA World Cup 2014 Charity League. All are welcome to join.

I'm trying to raise money & awareness for TASK Brasil, which stands for 'The Abandoned Street Kids of Brazil'.

You don't have to donate but it would be great if some or most of us could help out a little.

As well as the winner gaining the title of 'WC 2014 Charity League Champion', the winner also will receive a personalised mug! (See my spiderm4tt twitter account for details on how to donate to TASKBrasil, and also for photos of previous winning mugs!)

    League name: WC Charity League

Which team will concede least goals/get most clean sheets in the group stages? Looking for a GK (no save points), and money is no object.

    Thoughts on Sun team please...

    Lloris,
    T.Silva, Vermaelen, Rodriguez, £2.5m???
    Muller, KDB, DiMaria, J.Rodriguez
    Messi, Neymar

    FOX Team:

    Lloris (Navas)
    T.Silva - Kombarov - Kompany (Schaer, Blind)
    J.Rodriguez - KDB - Muller - Valbuena (Bentaleb)
    Messi - Neymar - Sanchez

Some thoughts, let me know if you disagree:

    1. Is Brazil defense really essential? Thinking of doing Argentina/Spain for one of my perm defensive slots. Basically my plan is to have 2 premiums and 1 rotating defender. Should Brazil be one of the perm slots or maybe Argentina / Spain? Or any other defenses to recommend?

    2. Should Muller be there for GW1? Portugal defense is pretty leaky and I can see the Germans scoring and Muller being involved. Or should I play it safe and get Di Maria in instead? But Bosnia are not a pushover either.

    3. Plan in GW2 is Sanchez -> RvP, not sure what to do with the 2nd transfer. Any ideas?

    Appreciate your comments in advance.

      1. Brazil defense is not essential given the high price, but I wouldn't go with Spain either given the tough fixtures.
      2. Muller for sure.
      3. Just wait and see. 1 round of matches can change a lot.

I just looked it up and this does not seem to be true. They only kept 1 clean sheet against Honduras in the group stage. 4 consecutive 1-0 games to win it though. In any case, Brazil is dominant, but concedes more than Spain did when they were dominant.

Nice article above btw, but overall I think there is too much uncertainty with the German and Spanish teams to confidently pick any of their best value (read affordable) attacking players...

Yeah I was championing him earlier , and I've had him in some drafts, but again there is enough uncertainty to suggest otherwise...

Del Bosque seems to bend over backwards to fit Silva in, and that might be at the expense of Pedro, so I'm not taking the risk personally...

i would downgrade one of the strikers to get another playing GK..and use the extra to get a better 5th mid so that u have more room for rotation. otherwise its decent though i would prefer ozil/jrod over oscar. pogba is a good pick but i would also consider alonso/Valbuena due to set pieces. lahm may also surprise as DM imo

With Ozil being doubtful to start/play deep role/substituted early, is it better to go with Kroos or Muller upfront? Or both(Kroos/Muller) one has same doubts

All else being equal, Di Maria or James Rodriguez?

Argentina are a mystery to me, I could see them getting to the final, yet I could also see them crumbling soon after they exit their weak group. I've chosen Neymar as my big budget striker in every game, so I'm likely left with only Rojo from Argentina if I go without Di Maria.
