Dugout Discussion

World Cup 2014 – Dugout Discussion – Matchday 2, Day 4

Friday evening’s trio of fixtures get underway with a vital Group D clash between Italy and Costa Rica at 5pm. England fans will be paying particular attention to this one, knowing that a draw would be enough to eliminate the Three Lions after back-to-back losses in their opening couple of fixtures:

Italy: Buffon; Abate, Darmian, Barzagli, Chiellini; Motta, De Rossi, Pirlo; Candreva, Balotelli, Marchisio

Costa Rica: Navas; Gamboa, Duarte, Gonzalez, Umana, Diaz; Ruiz, Tejeda, Borges, Bolanos; Campbell

Cesare Prandelli continues with a 4-3-3 formation for tonight’s match. The Italy boss makes a trio of alterations from the XI that faced England – Gianluigi Buffon recovers from injury to feature between the posts as Salvator Sirigu drops out, Ignazio Abate comes in for Gabriel Paletta at the back, whilst Thiaggo Motta gets the nod ahead of Marco Veratti in the centre of the park. Up front, Mario Balotelli and Claudio Marchisio will be hoping to find the net for the second match in succession as Prandelli’s side close in on a place in the last 16.

Unsurprisingly, Jorge Luis Pinto make no changes from the starting XI that shocked Uruguay 3-1 in the opener. This sees Costa Rica line up in a 5-4-1 formation, with Arsenal’s Joel Campbell leading the line once again after serving up a goal and assist against the South Americans.

We then move onto Group E for the later two games. First up at 8pm, Switzerland and France go head-to-head as both sides attempt to build on victories in their respective openers and strengthen their chances of winning the group. The Swiss have decisions to make in the final third after both goals in the 2-1 win over Ecuador came courtesy of substitutes Admir Mehmedi and Haris Seferovic. Elsewhere, Ricardo Rodriguez will be looking to replicate his pair of assists from left-back and both Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka offer potential in the attacking midfield three. Karim Benzema’s two goals and assist proved pivotal for the French against Honduras, while Mathieu Valbuena, Antoine Griezmann and Paul Pogba will be desperate to open their Fantasy accounts.

The final match of the evening sees Honduras and Ecuador attempt to bounce back from their opening defeats. An ill-disciplined Honduras offered little in the way of attacking potential in last week’s loss to France and will be of little interest to Fantasy managers, though the South Americans will be optimistic that frontmen Enner Valencia and Felipe Caicedo and wingers Antonio Valencia and Jefferson Montero can make the difference and spark their campaign back into life in what looks a straightforward game for Reinaldo Rueda’s side.

think rooney would edge giroud. cahill is better than sakho. baines is better than evra now. surely gerrard would beat sissoko into the team?

sturridge and benzema's domestic goal record this season was pretty similar i think.

Indeed. I think I just did a few too many silly things last season just for the sake of being different. Like selling Suarez and ignoring Yaya. Was still surprised to come 26k despite doing these things. Think I'll have a much better season in general this time around though. How you doing in Fox? My rank has plummeted down to 200 after that France match! Need Messi (c), Di Maria, Muller and double Bosnia defence to save me tomorrow!

Yep Varane for me. Even worse was having Rodriguez and Evra in my work league (which is £1000 for first place and I was 2nd before the match), and Rodriguez getting a score of -3 and Evra 0 (it's -1 for every goal conceded 🙁 )

Not really sure, I'm quite happy with my team apart from obviously having to give VanP the boot. Double Bosnia defence against Iran should surely be good but we'll see how they play vs Nigeria. Will probably just be VanP to Benzema or someone. He will be hungry for that golden boot. Depends also on whether theres any likelihood of Di Maria or Messi being rested?

                  Bentaleb Robben Valbuena Rodriguez Muller
                  Messi Neymar RVP

The only one that needs to go is RVP > Benzema/Dzeko

Can't help but think that the ones who prosper will be somebody who sticks their neck out and calls a good double up on a high scoring game.

I have a feeling Fred might start scoring vs Cameroon, but I don't have the balls to bring him in. He has looked terrible. Would be a great differential though if he decided to turn up. Argentina vs Nigeria could be a thumping, might be a good time to try a Messi+ Aguero/Higuain double up.

Could happen. I think Nigeria will be much better playing on the counter attack than when they were trying to break Iran down, and Moses has a bit of pace. Bosnia looked good in defence vs Argentina but it might be a different story when they are the ones with all the possession. In saying this I have double Bosnia defence so hope none of this happens.

    Another rookie question:

I am playing a 3-5-2. Can I do Oscar (MID) -> Higuain (ATT) at the McD's game? In other words, if I transfer out Oscar, will I have the option to bring in a striker?

Not sure about Benzema. That Golden Boot is a big prize and I'm sure any striker worth his salt would want the minutes to win it.

Aye Benzema will want to win it, but he doesn't choose the lineup so can't put himself in. I definitely wouldn't play him if I were the manager.

blind 5 to beckeles 9 not bad, just realised he got the assist, was none the wiser.. looks like it could be pogba out with formation change right now; later on' 343 to 352 or 442 and leave lukaku out and simply swap wilkinson 7 for komby.. komby or lukaku it will come down too 🙁

    FFS WC Update

    Group B

McD GW1 result have been confirmed following a "slight" delay, however can confirm the results were:

    Chile 2 v 3 Australia
4 clear winners the biggest was via Roscola's 33 point win v Cylus11, whilst the Chileans DM 127pt was matched by Captain Innsie however the 2 "goals" proved insufficient as Nice to Finally Michu avenged his Spanish sacking who along with theBoose13 tied the game at 2v2 - the winner effectively coming from Kofloks slender 1 pt win over Zan Keroski.

Interestingly Chile actually outscored their victors by 565 v 539 but its Australia that took the 4 points!

    Spain 2 v3 Holland
Again 4 clear winners Spain went 2 up through good scores from JuanCarlos and Bowstring on Trout but the Dutch hit back icon pulled 1 back and No Ass Bergkamp is a Legend smashed Thomass by 26pts to level the match. It came down to the Dutch underdog asPompeyfan took the scalp over FPL winner / legend Spidermatt by just 5 points to clinch the 3 points.

GW2 is well underway with the two losers facing off to avoid potential elimination:

    Chile V Spain
    Sherlock Holmes V Spiderm4tt
    Zan Keroski V Thomass(c)
    Roscola V Loco Abreu
    GTS V Bowstrings on Trout
    Innsie V JuanCarlos-- merczi89

Whilst the two winners fave each other with the winner guaranteed progression:

    Australia V Holland
Nice to F Michu V Pompeyfan
Koflok V No Association Bergkamp is Legend
    cylus11 V iCon
    theBoose13 V Snake Juice
    Aaron Ramessi V Saniul (c)

Know the McD site seems to have improved - hopefully all can enjoy the competition.

Nice. Went for Sakho captain and still rose to 12th, I guess Messi(c) isn't the worst replacement 😉

so squeezing every point out of the game will be important for you now. I want a high ranking but that would be stressful this early on. Good luck SW

Thanks, really need Messi to deliver or else I'm only left with KDB to captain

if Argentina go 4-3-3 you should be laughing, failing that I cant see KDB not playing from the start. He made a big difference when he came on against the USA and they have to go for it now.

Have Neymar at 7....bench is Heydari followed by Kokorin...should I sub Neymar out at 7pts and hope either Heydari or Kokorin score higher? or is that a fool's gamble? Thanks.
