Dugout Discussion

World Cup 2014 – Dugout Discussion – Matchday 4, Day 1

Having restructured our squads with the aid of unlimited transfers across the Fantasy games, we now have two crucial clashes to focus on as the knockout stages get underway. First up this evening is an all-South American affair, as hosts Brazil square up to a Chile side that has already disposed of defending champions Spain in the group stages:

Felipe Scolari’s troops will again look to Neymar to make the difference after the Barcelona forward notched twice in two of his three appearances. A goal against Cameroon will surely boost Fred’s confidence after he struggled to make an impact, whilst Oscar’s Fantasy owners will be hoping for more of the same, with the Chelsea midfielder producing a goal and two assists thus far.

Having also won two of their three group fixtures, Jorge Sampaoli’s troops won’t be lacking in confidence. As Mexico showed earlier in the tournament, Scolari’s side have struggled against sides utilising wing-back systems and Chile’s 3-4-1-2 formation could well prove a stumbling block for the home side. Front two Alexis Sanchez and Eduardo Vargas – along with midfielder Charles Aranguiz – have delivered a goal and assist apiece, highlighting the underdogs’ potential ahead of the 5pm kick-off.

In the later match, another couple of South American contenders for the crown go head-to-head as Uruguay face Colombia for a place in the last eight. After losing their opener against Costa Rica, Oscar Tabarez’ side have done well to turn around their tournament but the suspension of Luis Suarez makes their task significantly more difficult – Diego Forlan looks the man most likely to get the nod alongside Edinson Cavani in a default 4-4-2.

Jose Pekerman’s side will have every reason for optimism, though. One of only four sides to win all three of their group games, Colombia rested most of their chief Fantasy assets for the final Group C clash with Japan and, in James Rodriguez and Juan Cuadrado, have two of the tournament’s in-form midfielders. Rodriguez has scored in all three of his appearances so far and also delivered a pair of assists, whilst Cuadrado has served up a goal and three assists thus far. Jackson Martinez is pushing for a start after bagging a brace in the 4-1 win over Japan and may well retain his starting role in the 9pm kick-off.

To all the JRod (c) twisters,

What are you looking for? A hat trick will get you at most 20 points which is 6 more points and that's a big if. You stand to lose a lot more then you gain. Messi could score and still end up with 10 points which is 4 less than you have.

    Madness to twist imo.

20 points on top of all the balls into the box, pass completion, shooting accuracy and RBs.

Not on top of. Shaqiri hit a hat trick as a midfielder with CS points and still only got 20.

scoring a lot of goals at a WC tends to get you noticed all right.

was there an english player who may have scored 5 goals in the WC? sounds a ridiculous concept.

JRod is definitely a great talent. But, other than that chest to volley goal, which was awesome, what else did he really do in that game? The other goal was a tap-in. Sure, congrats to him for not biffing it......but, Cuadrado definitely did a lot more in terms of touching the ball and working things into play, etc.

JRod was fairly absent outside of his goals. Of course, goals are worth everything in the end, so good for him. Not knocking the guy at all. Great, great talent. Cuadrado, however, deserves a lot of praise himself.

              JRod got the goals.

              He is the delivery machine.

Cuadrado is class too but he's the assist-man.......not denying his incredible workrate or wonderful stepover skills....however, if they didn't have JRod would they have won the game so easily?

JRod is fantastic. No arguing that. I must say that I've really been impressed by Cuadrado too. Both are looking great at the moment. Bright futures. I'm not trying to say Cuadrado is better than JRod. That would be a tough argument to try to win. Basically, I'm enjoying watching both of them do their thing.

                  Sound.

I regret not get JRod in my first picks.....thought i'd be smart and go with Cuadrado.

They're both brilliant players...not denying that all.

I just think the way the "world" game is set up that JRod will be a massive club target after the WC.

Totally agree. JRod will most likely get more suitors, and probably justifiably so. He is on a special level. I must admit, I was pretty unfamiliar with him before the WC started. Of course, I don't catch very many Monaco games to be honest.

They could have very easlly lost the game 2-1 or 3-1 in the first half....

They are an utter shambles at the back. The boys love to make the flicks and wait 'til the last minute for all the moves.

Against a well-drilled team like Holland or Germany they could get absolutely murdered.

Can someone explain to me why the commentators today pretty much just talked about how much they liked hummus the entire game, while occasionally remarking about the absence of falcons and some guy who apparently would have eaten the hummus had he been around. Also, why did they keep shouting the Spanish word for square the entire match? It was all very unprofessional, IMO.

It slightly bothers me that you can constantly switch captain on the same game day. It is taking the skill out of the game and handicapping the better ff players.

Take yesterday for example. I made the decision that Naymar would struggle v Chile so omitted him from my squad. I put my armband on James. However, so did the hordes who switched from Nomar.

The last WC game in McDs, you had to lock your cap'n in before the first game and that would be that. Until the next day.

    Poor game change imo.

I agree. I am one who changed to J Rod, simply because his game came after. However, I would not have made Neymar captain if I had to nail on a captain. Too risky choosing a forward. The guessing starts on the last gameday when the lat changes are made, both for low scorers and captain.

More skill there than 4 or 8 chances in the Round of 16.

Of course. But UFPL is different as there's no transfers for very long periods and only daily captaincy changes, so there is a much larger portion of skill involved in getting a good squad of players. Larger portion of luck mind.

Not to mention it's a much more refined game. Point scoring is MUCH better. Players are generally given the point they actually deserve. Having to choose a bench, rather than just be able to sub in anyone, but again this is a byproduct of the type of game/tournament.

McDs would be much better if you couldn't change formation within the round. Just ends up being your best 10 players plus a GK in most cases.

Theoretically yes but it hasn't actually happened as far as i am aware.

It suggests that getting your team right first up is very important and certainly more important than your capacity to be online 24/7 making changes to your team based on last minute information

Statistically with 3m players some people will get close to a winning ghost ship, however there are still so many player combos that it hasn't happened yet and the active players making the right decisions come past in the end.

Getting the core of your team right early on makes FPL easy. Triggerlips has a habit of doing it & cruising into the top 1K.

http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/1400318/history/ made 12 normal transfers with 4 made with his season WC in GW36 & didn't use his Jan WC.

I stopped playing McDs due to not being around for lineups & not being able to change captain. It's essential in McDs to know the lineups etc whereas FPL has autosubs.

He did have a good game. The only call was the early penalty shout but there was an element of doubt imo and you can't give them unless you are 100%.

He got that one 100% right imo. Hulk made the most of what was very minimal contact. As Old School said he showed massive balls under that much pressure from a whole nation really.

think Webb had a great game... was under intense pressure from the crowd on numerous occasions and not many refs would have the balls to disallow that goal or say no to the penalty shout...

Agreed. Bothers me that football commentators often fail to see where refs are coming from. Particularly offside.

I have 5 argies and 2 from Belgium as back up so at least 3 need to perform.. The Swiss were torn apart by France and can see Argentina getting 4 or 5 goals

The back end of this round is where I come strong

I'm going german myself. Hummels, Lahm and Mueller. And a couple of Costa Ricans. But see the appeal of Argentina. All I can say is...God bless the Colombians! Had Ospina, Zapata, Rodriguez (c) and Cuadrado. 64 points. I won't see another day like that I think.

      General consensus is NO.
But if you are chasing and hopeful of a brace from these players {once again if HOPEFUL} you may change the captaincy.

If you are leading your mini league or something, just don't do anything. Let Hames enjoy his 28 points. 😉
