World Cup 2014 – Scout Notes – Matchday 4, Day 4

Kevin de Bruyne grabs a goal and assist as Belgium eventually find a way past Tim Howard to defeat the USA 2-1 in extra-time. Argentina also need 120 minutes to get the better of Switzerland, with Angel di Maria firing the winner after excellent work from Lionel Messi:

De Bruyne the Hero for Belgium
Faced with a defiant Tim Howard between the posts, Belgium seemed destined not to reach the quarter-finals last night. Marc Wilmots’ side fired an incredible 39 attempts on goal, with 17 efforts on target, but were denied time and again by the inspired Everton stopper before de Bruyne came to the rescue. Handed a role in “the hole” behind Divock Origi, the former Chelsea man opened the scoring just three minutes into extra-time before teeing up sub Romelu Lukaku for the second, as his Fantasy owners were rewarded for holding after de Bruyne was rested for the final group game against South Korea.

Wilmots made six changes to his starting line-up for last night’s clash. Only Thibaut Courtois, Jan Vertonghen, Daniel Van Buyten, Marouane Fellaini and Dries Mertens kept their places as the likes of Eden Hazard, de Bruyne and fit-again Vincent Kompany were recalled, whilst up front, Origi was rewarded for a couple of eye-catching sub displays in the previous couple of matches. Lukaku’s goal off the bench suggests Wilmots has decisions to make ahead of the clash with Argentina but with so much uncertainty surrounding the lone forward role, many will choose to overlook Belgium’s forward options and turn to de Bruyne, who, with a goal and two assists, has played a part in more goals that any team-mate.

Green Ruins Belgium Clean Sheet
Thrown on as a sub with his side 2-0 down, Julian Green needed just two minutes to claw one back for Jurgen Klinsmann’s side. The strike was the first time Thibaut Courtois had been beaten in open play in the tournament – previously, Belgium’s only goal against came courtesy of the spot in the group opener with Algeria. With their backline looking solid, those currently holding Belgium defensive options may well choose to retain them ahead of a clash with an Argentina side that has scored just once in two of their last three matches and, aside from the occasional flash of brilliance from Messi, have looked far from convincing up front.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, four of Belgium’s top five performers for recovered balls were defenders. Daniel Van Buyten led the way with 13, followed by Jan Vertonghen (11), Vincent Kompany (nine), midfielder Axel Witsel (eight) and Toby Alderweireld, with seven. Similarly, the USA’s main men also plied their trade at the back, with Matt Besler (eight), Geoff Cameron and Omar Gonzalez (seven apiece) and DaMarcus Beasley (six) all catching the eye.

Di Maria Breaks Swiss Resistance
The Real Madrid man atoned for a poor overall display by slotting home a late extra-time winner to send Argentina into the last eight. Di Maria posed the main goal threat for Alejandro Sabella’s side, firing 12 attempts on goal, but in an erratic display, mustered just three efforts on target – Lionel Messi had a quiet game by comparison, producing just two shots over the 120 minutes, though his Fantasy owners were treated to an assist after a superb pass for the winner.

Sabella made just one alteration to his starting line-up yesterday, bringing in Ezequiel Lavezzi for the injured Sergio Aguero up front. The Argentina boss will be without Marcos Rojo for the clash with Belgium after the left-back’s second caution of the tournament triggered a one-match ban – Jose Basanta replaced Rojo late on and looks the likeliest starter in a backline which has now delivered two clean sheets in the last three fixtures.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Switzerland edged it for recovered balls by 67 to 64. Ricardo Rodriguez and Johan Djourou led the way for Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side with 11 apiece, with Valon Behrami (nine), Fabian Schar (seven), Gorkan Inler (six) and Admir Mehmedi (five) next in line. For Argentina, Federico Fernandez was the best performer with 10, followed by Ezequiel Garay and Javier Mascherano (nine apiece), Marcos Rojo (seven), Pablo Zabaleta and Fernando Gago (both six.)

Leroy Fer might. Or Daley Blind might move into the midfield, with Martins Indi slotting back into the defence.

Advice please with Sun Dream Team.
Banking on Dutch and Argies getting to semis hence both get 3 more games so I'm gonna load my team with their players. Trouble is they'll play each other in the semi so goals scored for one count against the other. The fact that the loser still gets the 3rd/4th place playoff game is it still worth doing?
    My team would be
    Ospina
De Vrij, Indi Martins, Vlaar, Blind.
    Robben, Di Maria, J Rod.
    Van Persie, Messi, Neymar.
    Thanks guys

What do you think will be the next big rule change in football? It's changing and evolving all the time (albeit slowly now as FIFA seem scared of change in modern times) but what's going to be the next offside rule? 🙂

Imagine if a shot-clock like in basketball was introduced and if you didn't shoot in 5 minutes of solid possession, then you have to kick the ball out for a throw or something.

Or whichever team hits a streaker in the face with the ball gets a goal.

Think they need to look at their current rules. Referral to a video ref needs to be there, anyone who claims that football should be exempt from that because it is the nature of the game is a gombeen.

Don't expect any drastic change...some small games to improve the game maybe like If the Penalty is given by the ref and the 4th officials communicates by radio it is not a penalty then the penalty gets canceled or if a player is given red in the first half but during half time it is proved it was not a red card decision he is allowed to be back on field..

A card before yellow? Seems like bookings are too easy nowadays. Could also be used between yellow and red. Maybe we should still allow contact and if it's not enough to stop them in the refs estimation... play on.

In the case of video refs we should just implement it all. Since most of the arguments are from owners and managers saying 1 decision cost them money or their job, therefore it must be vitally important that EVERY decision is correct. Feck cares about the pace of the game. Do you want it done right or not?

Oh and remove a player every 5 mins in extra time to open the game more 🙂

      Video play back a must.

I would also like to see both diving and abusing of the officials by players eradicated. In rugby any back chat to the ref is punished at once. Hence the abuse is minimal. something similar in football would help - culprits get a free kick against them, 10 yards further up the pitch than where the incident happened.

Diving in part can be erased through video playback for the critical ones. In other parts of the pitch, immediate bookings and free kicks as per the above.

A video referee like in Ice Hockey would really help the game.

And some post match bans for diving and violent conduct, regardless of whether the referee saw them or not.

Would be brilliant if I could get some opinions on my team and transfers in The Sun game..

    Lloris
    Rojo - Gamboa - Luiz - Blind
    Robben - Muller - Dempsey
    Benzema - Messi - Neymar

Have 4 transfers and then no more for the rest of the World Cup.. Planning on Rojo + Dempsey -> De Vrij + JRod.. Leaving 2 more. Am split between trying to get RVP in with something like Benzema -> RVP or trying to upgrade Gamboa by downgrading Luiz..

Any advice on the best option??

Anyone going with just 2 playing strikers? cant see the France/Germany game being high scoring and cant see any striker worth it in the Brazil/Colombia game(unless Neymar is deemed fit) so Messi and Robben seem the best bets for points(even with assisting/scoring they can get a respectable tally). for eg im Going for
    Cillessen
Mertesacker Varane Zapata VanBuyten Blind DeVrij
Lahm Mascherano JRod Valbuena Sneijder KDB
    Messi Robben

5 CBs and 3 CDMS basically!! and gonna play 5-3-2/4-4-2/5-4-1.. can see loads of points via RBs n blocked shots etc in this round

I think Neymar will play and he's capable of doing well.

Re defender...really tough one. With lots of extra time there's so little chance of clean sheets. None of my defenders did well this week. I think you need to get a player that has a good chance of assists or possibly a goal. Luiz bizarrely could be your best bet. Other than that Blind...he's great value to.

Everything about Luiz on paper is wrong. Little chance of clean sheet and prone to cards. Yet he's popping up in the box for goals and assists.

I have no idea what to do for my transfers. Pretty happy with my team and only have Bentalab and Duarte as non players. I may go for Luiz over Varane somehow as I have Lloris.

As much as it pains me to say it, Vertonghen. That's the best I've seen him play (against the USA) for ages and he scored against Korea too. Argentina have been pretty ropey at the back and not much cop up front either. I think the Belgians are more than capable of keeping them out.

If Argentina were Messi less I'd agree. Messi will score or at least assist ..he will also get 3 bps...it's simply what he does. Belgium could win...but Messi will do something.

If Aurier is coming then its the end of Jenko and Bellerin. If as you said AFC are going for Debuchy means Wenger have kept faith especially in Bellerin.

Debuchy is not that bad. Defensively he is not better than Sagna, but attacking wise he is good and better than Sagna.

Debuchy also have PL experience while Aurier is yet to play in PL.
Aurier will have ACON duties in January when AFC play City (basically in a crucial period), while Debuchy unless injured will be available during that time.

Cesc tends to go forward a lot from the pivot position thus making some space for opposition in midfield. Only way I see him fit in the Chelsea lineup is in the role behind striker {competition with Oscar}, unless Mourinho makes him tactically inept and a completely different player.

Could you people counsel me on my Fox team?

    Right now, it looks like:

    Navas, (Neuer),
Varane, de Vrij, Hummels, (Duarte, Halliche),
    Muller, Robben, Rodriguez, Valbeuna, (Bentaleb),
    RVP, Neymar, Messi.

I'm planning to do Valbeuna ➡ Schurrle, and Varane ➡ Blind. The only downside is that it will leave me with zero playing players on the bench, a big risk when people like Neymar and Hummels (!?!) are doubtful.

    What d y'all think?

2 quick questions please, could do with some adivse / help

    1) What % chance does Van Buyten have of playing against Argentina? 75%?

same decision to make - i think there will be goals in brazil colombia game. I think costa rica can hold off netherlands. Though i think Zapata will get more recovered ball points as brazil are quite lose in possesion in the final third

Zapata also plays first so you can switch him out and have Argentina/Netherlands to save the day. Good punt, imo.

Netherlands completed their game in 90 minutes, while CRC had to stretch till penalties to scrape past Greeks. Not a big deal, but they might be slightly tired. Robben and Co may take advantage of that. Hence suggested Zapata.

Haven't seen him play outside of the world cup, but what a campaign he's had.
Not sure what his value would be as its a little tough to gauge from 4 games.
How was he in Serie A, and why was nobody interested in him before?

Oh, its nothing, just a word I read upon whilst intellectually reading an intellectual book.

I thought juxtaposition was just when two things are placed together to create contrast/irony...

Lahm I would have picked him, but since Mustafi injured, I don't think Lahm will be in the midfield role again. He may be switched back to RB role which slightly lessens his appeal as a fantasy prospect for me.
