World Cup 2014 – Scout Notes – Matchday 7, Day 2

Mario Gotze emerges from the bench to fire Germany to World Cup glory with a late extra-time winner over Argentina. The South Americans fluff a trio of gilt-edged chances and fail to register a single shot on target over 120 minutes as their tournament ends in disappointment:

Subs Win it for Germany
Mario Gotze proved a handy differential for Fantasy managers as the World Cup came to its conclusion. After starting three of Germany’s first four matches, the Bayern man was shifted to the bench in each of the previous two games as Joachim Low’s decision to field Miroslav Klose through the middle forced Thomas Muller into a role out wide.

While Muller served up a second blank in seven appearances, Gotze climbed off the bench on 88 minutes to help secure the silverware for the favourites. Having previously played a part in only one of Germany’s first 17 strikes of the tournament, Gotze produced when it mattered most, volleying home an Andre Schurrle cross with just seven minutes remaining of extra-time

In terms of personnel, Joachim Low made just one change for last night’s match, with Christoph Kramer replacing the injured Sami Khedira in central midfield. Kramer lasted just only half an hour before being forced off with concussion, allowing Schurrle the chance for further game time off the bench. The Chelsea man continued his excellent campaign by serving up the cross for Gotze’s winner and, despite failing to start a single match, still managed to produce three goals and an assist for his Fantasy owners over the tournament.

Goals Dry Up for Argentina
Alejandro Sabella’s side only have themselves to blame after missing the three best chances of the match last night. Gonzalo Higuain, Lionel Messi and Rodrigio Palacio all spurned great opportunities as Argentina’s toils in front of goal continued – despite a wealth of talent up top, they scored more than a single goal in only one of their last six World Cup matches. A consistent source of clean sheet returns for Fantasy managers, Gotze’s goal denied Sabella’s troops a fifth shut-out of the tournament, after they had kept out Iran, Switzerland, Belgium and Holland in four of their previous five fixtures.

Argentina’s dire attacking performance afforded the victors a fourth clean sheet of the campaign. Having kept out Portugal, USA and France prior to last night, Germany were buoyed by Mats Hummels’ recovery from a knee problem and with the Dortmund man at the heart of defence once again, Low’s side justified the show of faith that saw many Fantasy managers benefit from investing in their main assets at both ends of the pitch.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Jerome Boateng led the way for recovered balls amongst the Germans with 12, followed by Mats Hummels (nine), Bastian Schweinsteiger (eight) and Toni Kroos (five). Martin Demichelis was top for Argentina with 12, with Marcos Rojo (nine), Ezequiel Garay (eight), Pablo Zabaleta and Javier Mascherano (both seven) also impressing.

IM (if still around), how do you feel about Kroos signing? Have an inkling he was playing a game with Munich to get a wage rise and it back fired, still a very talented boy though.

Yep, exactly, still a talented player and we got him relatively cheap. If we sell Khedira for around €20m then I think we've come out of it well, I prefer Kroos to Sami anyway..

I'm a bit worried about the midfield's defensive capabilities as Alonso shoulders most of the responsibility and he's only getting older and slower, and Kroos isn't a defensive workhorse like Sami was, he's more of a Modric.

I'm happy about the player but wary about where it leaves our midfield.

Maybe becasue he plays for Real Madrid? His defensive stats are always going to be less than someone who plays for Southampton or Leverkusen.

With him and Ramsey, we'd have great energy in midfield. I did want someone like Schneiderlin but i am really coming around to the idea of Khedira. He'll add drive from midfield, i felt we were too static at times last season.

City won the league with Yaya and Fernandinho. Liverpool finished 2nd with Gerrard & Henderson. I don't think we necessarily need a pure defensive mid.

Sums up Khedira on form. He is literally an engine personified.

He's not really a defensive mid, he's a box to box mid. His game is pretty much about his strength and improving his side's possession stats 😛

He's very physical and quite cumbersome, he wouldn't make many tackles, it would be more barging people off the ball as much as it would be tackling I'd say. He'd be all over the pitch though, he wouldn't always just sit back with Alonso, he'd be playing CF at times (badly I might add, he hasn't got much quality in the final part of the move).

He's a much stronger and slightly more defensive version of Ramsey.

As your second paragraph suggests, Khedira and Kroos are quite different player types. Kroos is originally an attacking play maker, Khedira a ball winner. I wouldn't replace one with the other. Khedira is a great buy, but was even better by Real originally.

Something about how valuable Khedira was for you tells the fact that Ancelotti lined him up in the CL final despite having just missed more than half of the season for injury and that was his first game after it.

See I think he was prioritised so much by Ancellotti because it was always going to be a very tight and probably very physical game, so Carlo didn't trust the mixture of Xabi, Modric and DiMaria to have enough about them to handle Atletico's mids, horses for courses!

We need a defensive mid for those situations, JRod won't be much good when we play against Chelsea in the CL and they just literally batter us off the pitch through strength.

I'm kinda waiting for him to come out of his shell a bit.. He seems a little overawed alright, not comfortable on the ball and that's a big problem for someone who's game is based off being comfortable on the ball, he looks nothing like a Xabi Alonso type player at the moment but hopefully he'll settle in a bit better and grow with age.. Modric was pathetic when he first came and was dubbed the flop of the year in spain but he's since been one of our best players so...

Okay, it's not perfect, but people saying Messi was bad or average are comparing him to his standards, as apposed to comparing him to other players.

If Messi was in the Germany team, he would have been their best player. Argentina were so bad in the middle, teams could afford to always double and triple up on him.

He still did things no other player could ever dream of doing. Even when he lined up Hummels 1v1, Hummels who has been immense, Messi made him look like an amateur.

I have the feeling he will only really be appreciated when he retires.

Leave those MOTM's out, it's still very unfair to say that Messi had a mediocre tournament. He had to make all the plays for Argentina, and did admirably a lot for what was pretty _mediocre team_.

If Mascherano is your second best player, you should be asking what in hell are you doing in World Cup final and how did you get there in the first place.

Now that the WC14 is over ,who would you choose to be world's most underrated player ,more action less hype sort of guy

For me it is Ron Vlaar ,not even in my dreams I thought that he can be so solid & against Argentina he was a big rock

FPL is the fantasy football equivalent of the London Marathon.

The best and most prestigious competitions do not always need to offer the best prizes.

The Olympic Games and Mastermind don't offer the biggest prizes either.

Adil Rami snubbed interest from Manchester City and Arsenal as he wanted to repay AC Milan's faith in him.

The defender spent the second-half of last season on loan at the Serie A side after he had fallen out of favour at Valencia.

He has been up for sale since the season ended and there was interest from England but the 28-year-old Frenchman has decided to pledge his long-term future to the Italian giants.

"I am very happy to be at a great club like Milan," he said.

"I wanted to prove how much I wanted to stay here, I saw the fans supported me and that gave me the strength to do everything possible.

"I loved talking to the fans and showing them I too am a Rossonero supporter. I felt like Gladiator! Like Maximus, I went through a difficult moment and at the end I won.

"I'm happy to be here. I want to show my great desire, the bosses here have given me confidence and I have done everything possible to come back."

        Hmm.. let's compare

        Markovic (born 1994):

13 goals in 46 matches in Serbian league.
5 goals in 26 matches in Portuguese league.
1 goal in 18 matches in EL.
0 goals in 6 matches in CL qualifiers.
0 goals in 5 matches in CL.

Messi by the same age (born 1987, so before season 2007/2008):

21 goals in 50 matches in Spanish league.
2 goals in 11 matches in CL.

Not quite the same. Striking thing is not that Markovic's stats are pretty crap, it's that I would have imagined Messi had better stats than that already by then. The big difference are 14 goals in last Spanish league season against just 5 in last Portuguese one. But Messi hadn't truly exploded by that age either. He did score 6 goals in only 9 CL matche just the next season, 2007/2008, and season after he exploded. Markovic needs to up his game immediately to do that. We'll see, but I doubt he does it.

I think the Mirror game will be good if it takes the lead from the World Cup game.

Depends what you want from a game. The Sky game is a very hands on game, takes lots of planning and you have to be around for the fixtures each day. On the plus side it means it's far easier to finish high if you are committed, as not everyone will be.

Not enough points in Mirror game for me. If they added bonus and took away stupid -2 for yc would be better.

Adil Rami gave a surprising interview where he mentioned a previously unheard interest by Arsenal and Manchester City:

"I am full of bs, talking everybody about how I love to play for this has-been-great-club with a history that I wasn't even aware of, instead for going to bigger clubs like Manchester City, or even Arsenal. It's because I realized I'm not a very good player, and Valencia is trying to sell me to just anybody. I know I could never get to play in really top clubs, so instead I try to make people at Milan think there's an interest from the likes Arsenal and City and I'm being loyal to them instead of being so crappy nobody else wants me."

Rami's original aim was not to be sold to an even worse club, but now he has set his sights higher:

"If they buy this, I may even manage to negotiate a higher salary as a reward for my so called loyalty," Rami told us with a cheeky grin.
