Scout Report – Diego Costa

After acquiring Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, Chelsea returned to the Spanish top-flight to finally complete their summer-long chase for Diego Costa last week. The 25-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge on a five-year-deal for a fee believed to be in the region of £32m, after Jose Mourinho’s side triggered the release clause in the Spanish international’s Atletico Madrid contract:

Discussing the move with the Blues’ official website, Costa was quick to praise his former side after a sensational season under Diego Simeone’s guidance last time around:

“I am very happy to sign for Chelsea. Everybody knows it is a big club in a very competitive league, and I am very excited to get started in England with a fantastic coach and team-mates. Having played against Chelsea last season I know the high quality of the squad I am joining. I would like to thank everybody at Atletico who made me into the player I am, it was an incredible time for me, but now I am starting a new adventure and I hope to win many trophies with Chelsea.”

The History

It’s fair to say Costa’s career was slow in getting off the ground. The forward was limited to street football in his native Brazil until the age of 16, when he was snapped up Barcelona Esportivo Capela, before signing his first professional contract with Portuguese outfit SC Braga in the summer of 2006.

Quickly loaned out to FC Panafiel Portugal’s second division, Costa grabbed five goals and an assist in 13 appearances before Atletico Madrid signed him up just a few months later. The Spanish outfit remained unconvinced over his abilities and, over the next couple of years, loaned him back to former club Braga (a goal and assist in nine matches) and, subsequently, Spanish Second Division sides Celta Vigo (30 appearances, six goals) and Albacete (35 appearances, nine goals) before selling him to Real Valladolid in 2009, albeit with a buy-back clause inserted in his contract.

While Costa’s nine goals and six assists were unable to prevent his new club from relegation, Atletico took note of his impact for the La Liga strugglers and immediately re-acquired his services for the following season. Starting 2010/11 as a squad member, Costa forced his way into the first-team by the end of the campaign and managed six goals and four assists from 28 appearances before injury curtailed his game time the following year.

Having recovered from a knee complaint, the frontman was loaned out to Rayo Vallecano in the latter half of 2011/12 in order to boost his fitness and served up 10 goals and four assists in just 16 league matches. Back at Atletico the following season, he finally flourished under the guidance of Diego Simeone – 10 goals and 12 assists in 2012/13 preceded 27 strikes and five assists last term as he led his club to their first Spanish title in 18 years, whilst eight goals and a pair of assists in nine Champions League matches helped Atletico to the final, where they were beaten by neighbours Real Madrid.

On the international stage, Costa has been a controversial figure. Having been fielded in a couple of friendlies by Brazil, he chose to turn out for Spanish after being granted Spanish nationality – he’s since played six times and failed to score.

The Prospects

Physically imposing and willing to scrap for every ball up top, Costa looks the ideal forward for Mourinho’s style of play. The 25-year-old is renowned for a somewhat impetuous streak and isn’t afraid to put himself about in the final third – as evidenced by 19 yellow cards in his last two league seasons with Atletico.

Despite splashing significant amounts of cash on forwards over the last few years, the London club have never quite managed to replace the barnstorming displays of Didier Drogba. Similar to the Ivorian, Costa was a relatively late starter in professional football and certainly seems to have the same street-fighter attitude as Drogba, who wreaked havoc on top-flight backlines for a number of seasons. As the new boy admits:

“Boys who grew up playing in academies are taught to control themselves and respect others but no one ever told me otherwise. I didn’t have a school to teach me this. I was used to seeing players elbowing each other in the face and I thought it was the norm.”

Clearly, the Blues boss needs to improve upon last season’s attacking displays. Chelsea finished just four points off the top of the Premier League in The Special One’s first year back at The Bridge despite scoring just 71 times – 30 less than Liverpool and 31 fewer than champions Man City – and it’s arguable that the lack of a world-class frontman was the difference between success and failure.

Although Mourinho wasted little time in instilling a real resilience at the back, with 18 clean sheets delivered and only 27 goals conceded, in the final third, it was a different matter altogether. Whilst Eden Hazard can be exempt of any criticism after serving up 14 strikes from the flank, the Chelsea forwards failed to offer Mourinho a solution- Samuel Eto’o was the most prolific centre-forward with nine goals, as Fernando Torres and Demba Ba chipped in with five apiece.

Already, both Ba and Eto’o have moved on as Mourinho restructures his options. Although the Blues boss has insisted his summer spending is already over, reports suggest that Chelsea are in talks to bring Drogba back as a player-coach – a scenario which could see Romelu Lukaku farmed out on loan once more, with Torres utilised as back-up once again.

Despite just one outstanding season for Atletico, Costa has been handed a premium price tag right across the Fantasy games. Coming in at 10.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 9.5 in Sky Sports, he certainly offers a security of starts and will strengthen the Blues’ close-range potential – all but one of his 27 goals for Atletico last term were scored from inside the area.

Whilst his arrival will undoubtedly bring plenty of investment the Brazilian’s way, there’s a belief that Costa’s work-rate and hold-up play, whether in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 could, in turn, strengthen the Blues’ midfielders points potential. One look at Drogba’s record under Mourinho shows the Ivorian was never too prolific – notching 10 and 12 times in his first couple of campaigns under Jose, Drogba served up 20 goals in 2006/07 in the pair’s final year together in London.

Furthermore, with Frank Lampard now departed, there are question marks as to whether Costa can oust Hazard from the role as number one spot-kick taker; indeed, this could be a potentially decisive factor for many, given that the Belgian is cheaper at 10.0 in FPL. With an opening trip to Burnley preceding home clashes with Leicester, Swansea and Villa in the first six Gameweeks, Costa certainly has the schedule on his side as he looks to hit the ground running. However, it remains to be seen whether he can replace Hazard in our Fantasy affections or even offer a double-up option as Mourinho looks to bring the title back to Stamford Bridge.

Is Koeman a good defensive coach? Should we expect some clean sheets? I'm starting to feel unsure about Chambers, considering Wisdom now that he moved for 0.5 cheaper.

I was just having a tinker and put together a seemingly perfectly balanced team that looks sick. Three 8.5's up top and 4 quality mids. The lack of the expensive strikers as captain options could be a worry though

                  Courtois 4.0
                  Verm Ward Taylor Chambers Wisdom
                  Sanchez Fabregas Mata Eriksen 5.0
                  Bony Dzeko Giroud

Mainly what do you think of the cash spread? Lack of primo striker?
Another thing I was toying with is very different, getting RVP for early captain then I can swap to any form primo striker in the game if/when the dutchman isn't killing it

Not bad tbh. The lack of captaincy options is worrying though, and I don't think Mata is enough United attacking cover. One of RVP/Roo looks almost a must with their fixtures. Courtois is too expensive. You'll be missing out on the mid priced midfielders like Arnie, Tadic, Siggy, SDJ, Snoddy who could all prove to be excellent value too.

solid points all around except Courtois is the cheapest chelski option. Are you not backing their defence? Probably right about a utd striker. Might go the Rvp route

I think Chelsea will do well defensively but with the added bonus of save points for keepers I can't see Courtois being worth 1.5 more than the 4.5 keepers.

Two rotating 4.5 GKs will allow you to get Hazard for Fab 😉

    De Gea (Elliot)
    Cahill, Ward, Cameron, N.Taylor, D.Simpson
Mata, Ramsey, Arnautovic, Siem De Jong, Albrighton

Main concern is with the midfield, the two cheapish mids worry me. Would downgrade RVP to Rooney but not sure what position he'll play.

As you can see, I've basically downgraded Giroud for Jelly and used that to bulk up the defence. There are question marks over the starting positions of Mariappa/ Wisdom and Cameron. I'd s
advise you to have nailed on players to start with

    Tear this

    Krul Mannone
    Cahill Ward B.Davies 4.5 4
    Hazard Eriksen SDJ Arny
    RVP Sturridge Jelly

the 4.5 will be any starter who rotates well with Palace and 4 can be anyone.

        1)Kun

        3) Costa

Beyond that, I can't see any nailed on reliable heavy

None of those players if I'm honest. I was keen on Rooney but starting to have doubts now that the transfer rumour mill is in full swing. Will need to see how he is used in pre-season under LVG.

Giroud isn't a bad prospect but I think there are better options amongst the Arsenal ranks. Their mids will surely be a better bet.

Costa is an unknown at this stage so for that reason his hefty price tag represents a risk.

Morning all. I know its way to early to finalize teams but would appreciate some input on my ‘out loud ramblings and thoughts’.

    Mannone/ Krul
    Shaw/ Debuchy/Marriappa/Wisdom/4.0
    Sanchez/ Toure /Albrighton/ Fabregas/ 5.0 (Holilett/Davies /Delph etc)
    Costa/ Rooney/ Jelavic

I am thinking of going for Krul as only keeper. Get in a 4.0 for Mannone. Use the .5 for-

    a. The 4.0 defender to 4.5
    b. The 5.0 mid to a 5.5
    c. Albrighton to a 5.0
    d. Keep the .5 in the bank
    e. Leave it.

I would be quite happy to go with Krul all season, the difference between the goalkeepers scores at the end of the year is minimal in my opinion. Eg-
    2013/2014
    Krul 123
    Boruc 125
    Mingolet 132
    Lloris- 141
    Howard (top scorer)160

The thing is I cant see where that .5 would improve the team, I don’t plan to play the 4.0 defender at all really unless a real emergency.

    Any input welcome

Oh, or Debuchy to a 4.5 and Fab to Hazard! AAAgh, so many options!

You have got a good balanced team. But here is what i feel.
1)Courtois- Given that you have gone the uber route in defense,he is a godd pick.Otherwise i wouod have advocated some other GK.

            2) RvP/Rooney is a must in the start. They have some very good fixtures and you couod lose a lot of ground if they score. I read in one of the United forums thatbRooney and RvP may play together with Mata just behind them.If that is the case Rooney + Mata would be really cool.. Also swapping tgem for Costa/Sturridge later if needed will also be easier.

            3) Since you have Sanchez, Don't think Giroud is a necessity given the fixtures. The best strike force given the fixtures would be RvP/Rooney, Costa/Dzeko, Bony.

Cheers Bluey. I like the idea of having Rvp cos it allows a swap to any expensive striker that hits form and he looks a good gw1 captain. From that team above I swapped courtouis for Speroni/Gilks combo (Or any 9.0 combo if Gilks isn't #1), Mata for Shelvey/Snod and Giroud for Rvp. Looks better I think with the expensive striker

They don't score goals or provide assists though, the most crucial part of the game.

          Two tips from me

          1. Spend money on your front 7, especially on your forwards.
          2. Select attackers from top teams only if you can. One player from Stoke (Arnautovic) is ok to start the year, but stick to players form Chelsea, Arsenal, United, Pool and City.

Obtaining BPS & converting them into Bonus Points are very different things.

For example, a DM could have 5 clearances in a game coupled with 5 blocked shots & another 10 interceptions resulting in him being rewarded with 20 BPS.

Now, a forward who comes on in the 89th minute & scores a meaningless goal to put his team up 3-1 would be rewarded 24BPS & in turn, any bonus points being rewarded to the player's final scores.

Check out the "Help" tab > "Rules" tab > "Scoring" tab & you'll see that goal scoring & assists are still at the heart of receiving Bonus Points.

i understand baines is good and could be the top defender again in epl but surely he will not get much points in the initial stages. His pts would pick up on gw8 where there is a great run of fixtures. I would consider changing baines to another defender and upgrade matic/jedinak...

u can always get baines in again and price of baines may drop by then if he does not perform due to tough fixtures

Baines is a threat every week & quite sporadic actually so you just have to place him in your squad & not move him unless he gets injured.

Spot kicks & set pieces can happen (like his goal against Utd last year) at any time so unlike those cheap defenders you just have to ride him, no rotation.

Too many options to know for sure. Have to wait and see who earns regular starts. Sterling one of the safer ones early on but a bit over-priced

Pelle is a decent shout. They have pretty good fixtures to begin with, i'm just wary as he's come from the Dutch League. Some of them don't exactly hit it off haha.

I think a lot of people have picked Jela as they feel he is on pens? I'm quite certain he won't be as Brady has returned to fitness and Snodgrass will be next in line. I don't think either are that great as a pick but if i went for one i'd go for Long.

I prefer Long myself if I ever need 6.0 Fwd.

So who do you think have the most value per price in Hull? I like the idea of having Bruce (will he start?) or Brady (he is really good prior his injury).

I think Brady is great value at 5M and i am considering him as my 5th Mid. If he's fit he will play as he's comfortable in many positions, especially LWB if Bruce lines up 352.

Bruce won't start i'm afraid and even when he does he doesn't get a full game as he just can't last. We're after a new CB and he's already probably 4th choice behind Davies, Chester and Figueroa. Go with Chester at 4.5 if you really want a Hull DEF, he will start every week when fit.

Snodgrass at 6M is reasonably priced, will be on free kicks too but apart from that it's quite difficult to predict the line up IMO.

                  Thank you for the info.

Now I would avoid Bruce and will keep in mind Brady is a good picks for 5.0 Mid.

Snodgrass don't really appeal me at that price. +0.5, and there will be many players to choose from.

your solution is to downgrade rvp to upgrade remy..alternatively get pelle or consider a 352 and get a mid-priced mid like eriksen dejong etc. all it takes is 2 transfers to change back to a 343 and i think its worth it if u are unsure of who is ur 3rd striker.

I've just gone with three changes but it does have Fletcher up front with Silva in midfield. I did

Cameron, Odem and Remy > Wisdom, Silva and Fletcher.

The Wisdom train might be cancelled as WBA are apparently signing Gamboa who is a RB too. Not sold on Vlaar, maybe try Cameron (if nailed) as he would rotate very well with Naylor. Otherwise it looks good.

Like the Speroni-Green picks individually but not sure how they rotate (granted, i told myself last season that this season i'd feck rotations and just pick a cheap keeper).

Might swap Vlaar for say Huth or Vermaelen if he moves. Monitor azpi over pre season I guess, in terms of starting place.

De Jong > Siggurdson would give you abit of cash to use elsewhere. I like the front 3, don't see much errors with them - all proven FPL scorers. just dependent on position and minutes.

Terrible because you have 4.5mil wasting away on your bench each week.

Also, a screen cap of less than half your team doesn't tell us much about it was a whole...

What are thoughts on Remy's position in Liverpool? Will he be a starter or as competition for lone striker?

No doubting Remy's talents but it would be a tough ask of him to replicate Suarez's role in the starting 11. Rodgers employed a 2-striker formation to accommodate SAS, any thoughts on whether Rodgers will shift back to a more solid team with 5 across midfield (Henderson/Lucas, Gerrard, Coutinho, Sterling, Lallana) or stick with 2 strikers up front?

There's no answer to this yet mate. There will be lots of competition for places and BR will mix up the systems again. Up to the players who earns the spots. My feeling is we'll see a lot more 4-3-3 this season but if Remy is hungry and plays his ass off BR won'y hesitate to play 2 up top again

Pardon my basketball analogy but Swansea City have two amazing Power Forwards in Bafetembi Gomis and Bony. Granted Bones might leave but Gomis is big striker that can show some grace. Wonder why people aren’t considering him. Did it a long time for Lyon in Ligue1 and the Champions League.

In recent times he has been pushed aside by Alexander Lazacette and lisandro Lopez hence the move from Lyon but at one time he was pushing hard for that French starting role but he fell short behind Benzema. Then the emergence of Giroud basically needed his French run.
