Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Budget Forwards

We roll out number eight in our series of articles focusing on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player Price List this lunchtime. Having looked over the Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders, Premium Defenders and Budget Midfielders,Mid-Price Midfielders and Premium Midfielders, we turn our attentions to the forwards, starting with what’s on offer at the bottom end of the market.

Arsenal’s Joel Campbell could be an interesting option amid reports that Arsene Wenger is keen to loan him out to a Premier League side this season. The Costa Rica striker served up 11 goals and 12 assists at Greek side Olympiakos last term and with both Everton and Southampton reportedly sniffing around, could be a viable option at just 5.5. Certainly, with Alexis Sanchez added to the mix, Campbell will surely need to move away from the Emirates this term in his quest for regular game time.

With Christian Benteke still sidelined through injury, Andreas Weimann and Gabby Agbonlahor will be crucial to Villa’s chances over the first few months. Both come in at 5.5 apiece after poor displays over 2013/14 – Weimann managed five goals and five assists, whilst Agbonlahor produced four goals and seven assists; hardly prolific form. Bearing in mind that the midlands side have six tough fixtures in the first eight Gameweeks, few will be willing to take a punt, though Darren Bent, at a mere 5.0, notched twice in the club’s first summer friendly and may yet come into contention for a starting berth again.

Burnley’s Danny Ings will set you back 6.0 after producing 21 goals and seven assists for the Clarets in last season’s promotion campaign. With strike partner Sam Vokes (20 goals and five assists) sidelined for the first few months with knee ligament damage, Ings looks the likeliest source of goals for Sean Dyche’s side, though Ashley Barnes (4.5) could retain his starting berth in Vokes’ absence and has already notched twice in pre-season.

After scoring just 33 times last term, Palace’s forwards are understandably low-end assets. Five goals in 32 appearances sums up Marouane Chamakh’s (5.5) impact, whilst Dwight Gayle (5.5) will be hoping for improved pitch time after scoring twice in each of the final two Gameweeks of 2013/14. With the Eagles defence likely to offer far better value and Jason Puncheon available for just 6.0 in midfield, it’s fair to say that snapping up a Palace striker will be far from a priority. Gayle’s form and opportunities are worth monitoring, however.

Three goals and two assists in his final eight appearances for Everton last term underlines Steven Naismith’s attacking potential. In spite of his 5.0 price tag, a lack of guaranteed starts will ensure most steer clear – the Scot is perhaps more likely to feature off the bench for the Toffees as Roberto Martinez rotates in the final third in order to cope with their Europa League schedule. Arouna Kone (5.5) managed just 82 minutes before falling foul of injury last season. Martinez clearly favours the Ivorian, having also acquired him for Wigan, but a regular starting role looks highly unlikely as the Everton boss attempts to step up his pursuit of Romelu Lukaku once again.

Hull pair Nikica Jelavic and Shane Long are both available for 6.0 ahead of a decent opening schedule. Admittedly, neither player was prolific after arriving at the KC in January, with four goals apiece from 16 and 15 appearances respectively but the addition of Robert Snodgrass and Tom Ince on the flanks should improve prospects in the final third. With QPR, Stoke, Villa, West Ham, Newcastle and Palace in the first seven Gameweeks, Jelavic, with spot-kicks in his armoury, has appeared on a few radars. Certainly Hull attacking coverage looks a viable option for the opening few Gameweeks and, while Snodgrass will likely be the favoured route, both Jelavic and Long have clear merits as third striker options.

Championship winners Leicester hand us an intriguing option in the form of David Nugent. The Foxes main forward racked up 20 goals and 12 assists over 46 appearances last season and, available for 5.5, is also number one for penalties. Nugent (who notched twice in Leicester’s first pre-season friendly) is a little more expensive than James Vardy (5.0), who produced 16 goals and 10 assists last time around but with just one start in the final seven fixtures, seemed to fall down the pecking order – the recent acquisition of Leonardo Ulloa from Brighton compounds matters. A horrendous opening six matches (EVE, che, ARS, sto, MUN, cpl) should be reason enough to steer clear until the schedule improves around the Gameweek 7 point.

Louis Van Gaal’s arrival at Old Trafford has the potential to shake things up. Whilst Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie are expected to nail down starting berths, both Javier Hernandez (6.0) and James Wilson (4.5) will be hoping to force their way into the new manager’s plans – the latter scored twice in his only appearances of 2013/14 after being handed his debut by Ryan Giggs and could feature more off the bench this time around if he impresses the Dutchman during pre-season.

QPR’s Charlie Austin (6.0) seems set to lead the line for the season ahead after serving up 17 goals and three assists in 31 appearances last term. The former Burnley man ended as the R’s top scorer, despite missing a number of matches after undergoing shoulder surgery. If Harry Redknapp continues with last season’s 4-4-1-1 formation, spot-kick taker Austin looks the man most likely to produce for the Loftus Road outfit – he grabbed the only goal in the R’s first pre-season friendly earlier this week. Bobby Zamora may be 4.5 but the veteran is far more likely to rely on game time off the bench, with his manager looking to strengthen his options up top. Having scored just 60 times in 46 Championship matches in 2013/14, it’s safe to assume that Redknapp’s side may struggle to find their top flight scoring boots. Even so, with three kind home matches (HUL, SUN, STO) in the first five, Austin looks a strong option for those decided on big midfield investment. Unlike Hull, QPR currently lack a standout alternative in the middle of the park to cover attacking returns.

For those weighing up the merits of Austin and Burnley’s Ings, the latter’s opening away schedule may sway matters, though. Redknapp’s side have five very tough road trips to kick off the campaign (tot, mun, sot, whm, che), suggesting may will be more inclined to bench Austin on his travels, whereas Burnley pay visit to Swansea, West Brom and Leicester in their first four away matches, making Ings more of a “fire and forget” option for our front three.

Young Harry Kane will be looking to step up under new Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino this season. The 5.0-priced striker scored three times in 500 minutes for Tim Sherwood last term, though with the Argentine likely to retain the 4-2-3-1 system utilised at Southampton, it’s debatable whether he’ll place his faith in Kane to lead the line ahead of Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado. Certainly, the situation is one to monitor, given Kane’s impressive displays towards the tail-end of the previous campaign.

Peter Crouch remains amongst the low-priced forward despite serving up seven goals and six assists for Stoke. Available for 6.0, there’s a real fear he may lose his starting role to new boy Mame Biram Diouf, though – Mark Hughes attempted to sign the latter during both transfer windows last year, with his pace and power up top perhaps more in sync with the Potters’ new playing style. If Crouch can see off the new boy’s challenge, the opening few fixtures are certainly filled with potential – Stoke’s first six home matches (AVL, LEI, NEW, SWA, WHM, BUR) are supplemented by trips to Hull, QPR and Sunderland in a run that pits Hughes’ side against only three of last season’s top eight in the opening 12 Gameweeks. With the acquisition of Bojan Krkic from Barcelona adding to he mix, in addition to 6.5-priced midfield pair Marko Arnautovic and Peter Odemwingie, many will overlook Crouch as Hughes continues the Britannia revolution at pace.

End-of-season hero Connor Wickham and injury-prone Steven Fletcher will set you back 6.0 and 5.5 respectively for Sunderland. Bearing in mind that Gus Poyet prefers a 4-3-3 formation, though, the duo are likely to be in direct competition for the lone forward role – Wickham’s five goals and two assists in the final six fixtures of 2013/14 underlined his potential, whilst Fletcher has recovered from an ankle problem and bagged a brace in the Black Cats’ first summer friendly. If the pre-season matches can shed more light on Poyet’s intentions, the Wearsiders have five decent fixtures in the first seven Gameweeks (wba, qpr, bur, SWA, STO) to reap reward.

Saido Berahino is available for 5.5 after finishing last season as West Brom’s joint-top scorer on five goals. The youngster’s attacking threat may well keep him in contention for a starting berth under new boss Alan Irvine, though with summer signing Brown Ideye lined up for the lone forward role, Berahino’s best bet looks likely to be a role on the flank unless the Baggies move away from a 4-2-3-1 formation utilised by Irvine over the pre-season matches so far.

Overpriced is an interesting concept in FPL in that it is a very limited 'market' in the sense that the market can set the price but only to a small degree over a long period of time.

In that vein - who are you looking at in your squad who you think is 'overpriced' to their real value but who you are considering picking anyway.

Obvious 'overpriced' players for me are: Yaya, Sturridge, Sanchez, Ivanovic, Coleman and Lukaku.

Or are you a bit like me and generally avoiding such players for team harmony?

        "who you think" are overpriced.

If you don't think someone is then they aren't. I'm interested in people who are signing players despite objectively considering them to be overpriced.

I'm interested who else you have in addition presumably to Sanchez?

            Very interesting!

Yaya I am on board with, Sturridge I am struggling to find a draft that includes him that I like in the round. Tempted to wait and then buy for their incredible run of fixtures which starts in GW4.

If any of these players replicate their points scoring from last season then surely they are not overpriced? It's only because you think that they will not do as well this year that you class them as overpriced. Having said that I have none of these players but would consider any of them if they start getting points, especially Toure, Sanchez, Sturridge as they could be captain material (hence the premium price).

Well if Lukaku replicated his point scoring I'm still not sure I'd pay £9m but I see your point.

I'm just interested because it gets thrown around a lot as a negative term and that is exactly my point - if you think their PPG will justify the price you don't think they are overpriced.

I'm interested if you think it won't necessarily justify the price but you want them as a big hitter/captaincy option or for the dreaded 'coverage'.

          Couldn't care less about coverage.
Captaincy has a huge bearing though, I think it's crucial that you own the player you think will score the highest in a given week, it can make up half your GWK score.

I definitely don't care about coverage - just it's a reason given by some.

Agree re captaincy, although it's hard to ensure you have the best prospect in any given week but you do definitely need big hitters to give yourself captaincy options and that means paying big fees.

            Sanchez Tadic Oscar (ElAhmadi Albrighton)

This actually puts me off him, if he blanks the first week his price will plummet. If he does well the first week I'll miss out on 12 points but transfer him in straight away and still make the 0.3 profit and have him in subsequent weeks.

Purely because it looks as though he will be starting as a winger, Arsenal have difficult early fixtures and players new to the PL often have teething problems. Can he really be worth £0.5m more than Hazard who is proven FPL quality and will have pens as well? All things being relative.

I might still buy him though: )

All good points but as you say no given. Hazard is very well documented as being an explosive player, you are likely to get 2, 3, 10, 12, 2, 3, 6 out of him. One compelling reason for Sanchez is that you can swap him to anyone but it's really not unheard of for big name players to have slow starts in the PL.

Sounds a bit like an Arsenal fan coming through hoping you're right.

The ones I'm picking are Sanchez and Tadic - both unknown quantities in the EPL and risky for their prices. Ones I'm not picking but I think are overpriced is most of the Liverpool squad.- well, Sterling and Lallana in particular. Also Ivanovic given 5 into 4 doesn't go. Also Chelsea, Liverpool and City have 2 expensive keepers.

      B)

Contingent on Rooney being fielded in a more advanced roll v. on the wing.

This pair now offers you two clear cut captain's picks while the other limits you to one.

Something that should not be overlooked.

    Please help!!!!!!!!!!

    Which team, A or B?

    A: Krul/Mannone
    Felipe Luis/Mariappa/Vlaar/Wisdom/Bruce
    Hazard/Sanchez/Silva/Eriksen/Albrighton
    Studge/Dzeko/Jelly

    B: Krul/Mannone
    Felipe Luis/Vermaellen (if on ManU)/Mariappa/Vlaar/Wisdom
    Hazard/Mata or Silva/Eriksen/Siggy or De Jong/Albrighton
    Studge/Dzeko/Giroud

A has great MF, but B more balanced I think?

This is my Draft number 3, and I think I'm ready to leave it alone until the week of the League.

Comments and Critique please, What do you think are the strengths and weakness of this team? Who is a sure fire points in the bag player, and who is a punt?

If you think a certain player would be better replaced with someone else, I would love to hear your thoughts, but if you tell me youd change every player I probably wont listen.....lol.

    Foster, Krul

    Demel/Marriappa, Wisdom/Vlaar, Debuchy

I would ditch Dzeko, despite the love for him here as I do not think he is assured of starts. I think that rooney is a better option than sturridge given fixtures, and that would allow to shift mata and reinvest cash. I would look at a united defender as their fixtures are good. However, the midfield is good and the defence rotation would work, though I would look to get the stoke/swansea partnership in, for me that is the best of the lot for the first half of the season.

There are 8 teams in total, comprising of 5 players each
There are 3 playing squad members and two on the bench
The team's total runs scored = Sum of each of the 3 players' FPL scores
The two teams then go head-to-head based on the fixture list

There is only 1 groups in total, 8 teams in the one group
The Top 4 teams proceed to the play-off stage
Once the group stages are over then the Team who finishes 1st and 2nd will go head-to-head to see which team will go in the final. We will also have an Eliminator to see who will play the loser of Qualifier 1. The winner of that game plays the winner of Qualifier 1.
In the case that 2 or more teams in a Group end up on the same Points, head-to-head record and H2H Net Run Difference (NRD) comes into play in that priority

Each team is led by a captain. The captain must be available for selection
The captains are chosen randomly by the head of the tournament
The role of the captain is to scout for his team members and a vice captain
The captain must submit it's team to the head by Thursday.

So far I'm going with the, lazy, Mannone / Krul rotation. Not expecting a truckload of CS for that money but hopefully a nice few save points.

Is there such a thing as a 2x 4.5m keeper rotatiin spreadsheet. Rethinking above and putting Schmeicel , Foster, other 4.5m keper cos I don't want a keeper and defender from same club but Sunderland and Newcastle have some cheap, if not good, nailed-on defenders.

Because I hate rotation, I have never made it work, and picking someone other than Courtois probably means I'll have to make a transfer there at some point.

Double-ups is another thing I hate, but something I have given much more thought too when it comes to Speroni, more saves potential than Courtois.

I suppose he depends on whether you back Palace to remain uber solid, which I do. Plus I'll likely be rotating my Palace defender with a QPR or Swansea one

I decided to lock in Debuchy when I saw the transfer news because I always have the option to have that misgiving, but not locking him in means I don't have the option to profit from a 3 nil or 4 nil opening score. I know that Pulis is our Moses and great defensively, but I think the lads are going to lay down a marker in the first game.

I hope that Remy and Vlaar transfers go through. That will give me a formidable initial crew.

Did a bit of digging to look at how promoted clubs got on at start of the season:

    2013/14
Palace, Hull and Cardiff all lost without scoring a goal
    2012/13
Southampton lost 3-2 at city, West Ham beat Villa 1-0, Reading drew 1-1 at home to Stoke
    2011/12
QPR lost 4-0 at home to Bolton, Norwich drew 1-1 at Wigan and Swansea lost 4-0 at Man city
    2010/11
Chelsea 6-0 West Brom, Man Utd 3-0 Newcastle and Blackpool won 4-0 at Wigan

In last 4 seasons only West Ham and Blackpool have won on opening day and that same combination were the only recorded cleanies. QPR who many are banking on for clean sheets have had some shocking starts losing 5-0 vs Swansea in 2012/13 and 4-0 against Bolton season before. Food for thought?

Quite so. I'm only interested in cheap 3rd choice strikers from the promoted sides.

To be honest I'm genuinely shocked that Ings and Austin are the same price as Jelavic/Long, and although I don't rate Villa Agbonlahor/Weimann ought to be equally priced at worst. In short I guess I think the promoted strikers are overpriced.

One interesting question - how easily do you put aside club loyalties in FPL?

Generally FFS is very impressive in people being dispassionate and it is often at its worst when people are being ridiculously tribal.

I often struggled and sometimes used to 'hedge' my fantasy team against the results I wanted but last year I put that completely aside. Does make watching matches a bit weird sometimes though.

Spurs supporter. but I'll have Arsenal and Chelsea players in my team and will cheer them on.
In games vs Spurs I'll be hoping for a high scoring Spurs victory.
I don't dislike any team in the league with the exception of Man City anyway so it makes little difference, and I get their players regardless.

The tougher part comes when you have Koscielney in your team and he scores away at Newcastle to win you your mini league but deny Spurs the CL...

Obviously supporting your team comes first but some times are easier than others to enjoy your fantasy returns.

Even as a Spurs fan Kos has done me some massive favours. That GW last year when he scored and was then subbed off with a CS before you conceded...
