Scout Report – Brown Ideye

New West Brom boss Alan Irvine continued his summer of restructuring by capturing striker Brown Ideye from Dynamo Kiev for a club record transfer deal. The 25-year-old arrives on a three-year contract and, in a clear statement of intent, has been handed the number nine shirt for the season ahead.

The Baggies’ new technical director, Terry Burton, confirmed that the Nigerian international was the club’s number one target for 2014/15, with Irvine moving quickly to improve upon a dismal campaign that saw the midlands outfit finish just three points ahead of the drop zone:

“When I arrived at Albion the recruitment department flagged Brown up as the man at the top of their wish list. It is a fantastic signing because of the quality and the potential of the player. I can see that he really wants to be here and that he really wants to be playing in the Premier League. He’s a dynamic player who likes to get in behind defenders and he has the pace to do so. He gets himself into good scoring positions in the box and if there are opportunities then he will get on the end of them. We’re looking forward to seeing him play for the club and scoring goals.”

The History

A product of the Bayelsa United youth system in his native Nigeria, Ideye helped Ocean Boys to the 2006-07 title after scoring once in five appearances. Snapped up by Swiss outfit Neuchatel Xamax in January 2008, he managed double-figures in both full seasons at the club, delivering 22 goals and 16 assists in 50 league appearances before making his way to French club Sochaux.

Ideye made a slow start to his career in France. Arriving midway through the 2009-10 campaign, he mustered just two goals in 17 matches before finding his form the following year, producing 15 goals and six assists in 35 Ligue 1 appearances.

Once again, he was on his travels after Dynamo Kiev shelled out for his services in July 2011 and Brown wasted little time in announcing himself to the Ukrainian league. Bagging a brace in each of his first two appearances, he proceeded to produce 45 goals and 13 assists in 107 matches across all competitions before agreeing the deal with the Baggies.

On the international stage, Brown was handed his Nigeria debut back in May 2010 and has since scored five times in 24 appearances for his country.

The Prospects

Brown’s ability to consistently get amongst the goals looks crucial for West Brom next season. The midlands club have failed to replace Romelu Lukaku after the Belgian served up 17 goals on loan during 2012/13 – despite splashing the cash on the likes of Stephane Sessegnon and Victor Anichebe at the start of the previous campaign, they found the net on just 43 occasions, with Sessegnon and Saido Berahino top scorers on a mere five goals apiece.

Standing five foot 11, Brown may not be able to match the physical attributes of Lukaku but he boasts an excellent work-rate and turn of pace, factors that have been badly missed since the Belgian’s exit. Given that Irvine has splashed out £10 million for the 25-year-old’s services, it’s fair to say that Brown can be expected to lead the line for the upcoming campaign, with his experience in the Champions League and on the international stage affording them vital quality up front.

Understandably, Fantasy faith is a little low in West Brom right now. Last season’s 16th place finish hardly inspires confidence, whilst Irvine’s lack of top-level experience is also disconcerting and may persuade most Fantasy managers to initially steer clear of the Baggies, handing us time to assess their form. So far in the pre-season, Irvine’s preferred formation has been a 4-2-3-1 and, with Brown nailed-on, the likes of Victor Anichebe and Saido Berahino will be hoping to grab a role on the flank in order to stay in the first-team picture.

Coming in at 7.3 in the Sky Sports game, Brown has yet to be added to Fantasy Premier League (FPL) but a ceiling of 6.5 looks the likeliest scenario. The opening schedule hands the Baggies three decent home matches (SUN, EVE, BUR) and a trip to Swansea in the first six and suggests Irvine’s team could get off to a steady start. If they are to prosper and avoid the troubles of 2013/14, the Nigerian’s contribution in the final third looks crucial.

    thoughts on this bunch

    DDG / Krul
    Cahill / Cameron / Chambers / Bruce / Naylor
    Hazard / Mata / Eriksen / Sigurdsson / Albrighton
    Rooney / Costa / Pelle

This one has 3 united and chelski, rotates well at the back, costa and pelle punts (would maybe revert one of them to proven epl striker)

    comments appreciated.

Nothing at all, but if you are going with a premium keeper, then you ought to field him week in week out, no point in having Krul as warming your bench with 4.5mil price tag. DDG to Foster would free up some cash to be spend on upgrades.

          nada.
it's just,if I'm to save some GK money, I could downgrade DDG and upgrade one of defenders into united, possibly Shaw.
          Krul and Mannone good rotation.
          don't like having unusable goalie.

Morning all! Been on holiday since the lists came out had a chance to form a quick team. How is everyone doing? Looking at other RMT's kind of surprised to see so litle west brom in sides considering the fixtures. I know they were terrible last year but I suspect they will be improved this season. I for 1 intend to have Ideye as my cheap striker if he is around 6.

Well, I guess it depends on if your going for a defender from WBA or mid/forward. Swa and South away is, at least, no games they "should" get a CS in. Would maybe consider a cheap striker if your going 3-5-2. IMO 🙂

My main issue isn't your defence but your midfield. DJ, Tadic and Sanchez are all talented players, agreed. But taking a punt on three new players seems risky - sometimes new players take a while to adapt.

Still tinkering with a 3-5-2, I must admit I am quite liking this team:

    Krul
    Shaw Luis Davies
Sanchez Hazard Mata De Jong Siggy
    Rooney Dzeko

    Bench: Elliot Zamora Mariappa Wisdom

Plenty of flexibility to drop an under performing premium mid straight to Albrighton and upgrade Zamora to an 8.5 (Giroud/Bony) for a single hit if it's a catastrophe.

Man U, Chelsea and Tottenham all covered in defense.

    Thoughts?

Guys what are your thoughts on Sterling?

If you take away the Man City fixture (which he did brilliantly in last year by the way) then he actually doesn't have many bad fixtures and 8.5 is cheap for someone who's bound to be involved a good deal..

Or do you expect rotation even after he's broken through into the side twice now?

Kinda worried Rodgers will save him a bit more for the end of the season to exploit his pace / explosiveness, but then again the fact that there are a good few new signings indicates the opposite as they'll need time to gel into the squad..

Would think he's a pretty safe pick, sure a Liverpool fan would be able to give a more reliable opinion but hard to see him being left out. Particularly with the loss of Suarez.

Always more goals at the start of the season as the defences remember how to play with one another so Sterling's pace could be destructive. Personally staying away from Liverpool until seeing how they settle down without Suarez.

Sterling is one of the "overpriced" players that I fear will go nuts this season. But I will just wait and see how he does in the first couple of GW and then reconsider.

I really like the idea of him but 8.5 isn't cheap, it's on the cusp of big hitter status. He might be proven in terms of PL standard footballing ability but in FPL terms, he isn't proven in that price-bracket.

There could be rotation all over the show in Pool, especially once CL starts. I'd really like a punt on Remy (who I'd say is proven to be worth his quite kind price-bracket) but again, rotation is likely. So hard to know right now.

Both are contenders for UFPL though, where rotation doesn't hurt so much.

Agree it's not cheap and it requires a lot of faith in him, which I'm not sure I have quite yet.

He looks some player though, and he matched Eriksen (only 5 points off Ozil) last year. Expect him to beat his return of 9 goals and 7 assists this year if Rodgers maintains the faith... Which is another big question.

Eriksen is such a safer pick but I don't want to have the same as everyone else 🙁

Might have a proper look at this Lamela chap.

He's a decent option, but I think he is a tad overpriced. Not the best finisher, and I cant ser him competing with the 9m options.

The biggest worry for me though is he isnt particularly physically developed. With the extra games they have, I can see him especially being prone to rest and rotation.

I'm expecting rotation, especially as he's so young, but either way I'd leave it until you play your wildcard during week 3.

it's just so obviously Dzeko and Giroud in my eyes, but not all on here will agree.

I'm on that at the moment, just Chelsea's first two fixtures are tempting.

How can you compare 2 players that are 2 million price difference and say "ignoring price", you'd obviously pick the more expensive one then?

Giroud will keep plodding along, an assist theee, a goal here

Sanchez will be much more up and down, but much more fun imo

Added that he also gets an extra point for a goal, and possible CS points too

Surely he couldn't usurp Lloris? He's bound to want to fight for the 1st spot though, as any good understudy would.

No one really knows, Mourinho's going to let them battle for it. Imagine that Courtois will eventually win out but I'd probably steer clear for now. Chelsea often tighten defensively as the season progresses too so by then it should be clearer who is no.1

Yeah think he's been working hard and wanting to prove himself. Was particularly energetic in the game yesterday. Would look at Terry if you want a guaranteed way into Chelsea's defence.
