Moving Target

Moving Target – Ben Davies

Maurico Pochettino made his first foray into the transfer market as manager of Tottenham by snapping up Ben Davies and Michel Vorm from Swansea City. The former arrives at White Hart Lane for a fee reported to be in the region of £10 million as the north London outfit saw off Liverpool in the race for his signature.

Having made his debut in the midweek friendly win over Toronto, the 21-year-old left-back discussed his move with the club’s official website:

“I’m very happy to be joining a club like Spurs. It was such a good opportunity for me and there was no doubt in my mind about it. It’s a great place to be and something I jumped at the chance of being part of..I just want to play as many games as I can this season. My aim is to come in and do my best and work hard under the new gaffer.”

The History

A product of the Swansea youth system, Davies was propelled into the first-team as a 19-year-old after first-choice left-back Neil Taylor suffered a serious ankle injury at the start of the 2012/13 campaign. Despite a lack of top-level experience, Davies was afforded the chance to impress by then-manager Michael Laudrup and went on to feature 37 times in his debut Premier League season, producing a goal and two assists.

Despite Taylor’s return to full fitness last term, Davies continued as the Swans first-choice left-back under Laudrup and replacement Gary Monk. Racking up another 34 league appearances, his raids down the flank served up two goals and an assist for the Welsh outfit.

On the international stage, Davies represented Wales Under 19 side on three occasions before being handed his senior debut in October 2012. He’s since gone on to represent his country 10 times and remains ahead of former team-mate Taylor in the pecking order.

The Prospects

Pocchetino’s penchant for attacking full-backs in his preferred 4-2-3-1 system bodes well for Davies’ Fantasy potential over the season ahead. The raiding runs of Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw were a feature of Southampton’s play under the Argentine last season and the new man in charge will be keen to replicate a system that helped his former side to an eighth place finish in his only full campaign at the helm.

A look at Davies’ distribution in 2013/14 underlines he was more than a little unlucky just to pick up a single assist. The left-back produced 31 key passes for the Swans last term – joint seventh amongst defenders – and created a goalscoring opportunity for team-mates every 97.6 minutes; up from 178.9 minutes in his debut campaign and illustrating his improvement in the final third.

Furthermore, Davies improved his successful dribbles from 43.2% to 51.7% in 2013/4 and also improved his shot accuracy (from 22.2% to 33.3%) and the frequency of attempts on goal (336.2 minutes per effort compared to 357.8 the season before) to further indicate the 21-year-old’s growing stature.

Bearing in mind that Pochettino led Southampton to 15 clean sheets in the previous season – seven at home and eight away, more than any teams on their travels – there’s a real belief that Spurs could offer us strong potential at the back, boosting Davies’ prospects at both ends of the pitch.

Another cause for optimism is the youngster’s price across the Fantasy games. Starting off as a Swansea player, he sets you back just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.5 in the Sky Sports game; bearing in mind fellow full-back Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen are priced at 6.0 apiece, Davies certainly has the potential to provide us excellent value. His move also allows Taylor the chance to reclaim the Swansea left-back berth and, at 4.5 in FPL, he’s now back on some managers’ radars ahead of four decent home games in the first seven for the Swans.

The opening schedule also smiles in Davies’ favour. With Pochettino’s side set to face just three of last season’s top seven in the opening 12 Gameweeks – including home matches with QPR, West Brom, Southampton, Newcastle and Stoke – the young Welshman is handed the chance to play his way into our Fantasy plans from the outset.

Mauricio Pochettino lead Southampton to 15 clean sheets last season.

How many clean sheets would you guess Spurs will achieve this season?

As such, surely Vert, Walker, Davies/Rose and the other CB will be great value picks????

Traditionally Spurs are rubbish at keeping clean sheets. Not sure Poch can change that but you never know.

I'm not so sure, they could easily line up as a 4-2-3-1 with:
                Noble - Kouyate/Diame
                Diame/Downing - Nolan - Jarvis

Zarate can play any where in that front 4. I think Big Sam has realised he needs more flexibility in his team and thus my theory that Zarate will start.

Downing was way better than Diame on the wing though. Far more threatening and he can cross the ball much better too.

Nolan relies on knockdowns from the striker who can head the ball from a cross. Diame can't cross so the system wouldn't work well for Nolan.

Don't worry about your fifth mid.

Youll rarely field Davis anyway & whats worse you can never tell when his points will come.
(Damn it... Why didn't I start Davis away to Newcastle in the third week of November?!)

I would rather field a 4.5mil defender once & a while; at least they can get lucky & grab you a CS.

With a cheap def youll at least you have some idea of anticipating when he might score.

“Coutinho is the brain in our team, the continuity player. He might not score many goals, but he’s a wonderful reference for the team. He is the one that gets the team ticking, gets the movement in front of the ball. He goes and gets on the ball. He’s a fantastic talent for such a young player and he’s still gaining his fitness. He makes the crowd get off their seat. For someone so small, he’s very tough and robust. He’s a wonderful technician that has a great idea, tactically, of the game.”

Spot on Brendan! So much hate for this little legend on here 😕

I agree. 2 or 3 years we will see if he can fulfil his potential but that potential is huge. You don't see many 20/21/22 year olds capable of playing such beautiful, intelligent football

Vision is extraordinary though. The amount of times I've seen him take the ball from a full back, turn immediately and spray the ball into the run of an attacker with the slightest glance is astounding. Think he'll be a top player in 3/4 years.

Have you seen him shoot? Have you seen him ever put in a World class performance against a big team and I'm not just talking about scorning. His work rate and passing just suddenly disappears. Not saying he won't improve but to say his critics are stupid is a bit too much. No wonder inter let him go so cheap

I've seen him play and I am also aware he is only 22. Got huge potential which he can still fulfil. I think its extremely harsh to criticise young players and call them rubbish at that age. He will prove you all wrong given time.

In the meantime he is a decent player for Liverpool and is certainly good enough to be a starter. I certainly wouldn't expect him to be world class though at this stage.

The RMT tool and player score predictors are nice, but I have one major gripe about them.
The score is made up by predicted score assuming the player starts, multiplied by the odds of the player starting the match. That is all fine, but all we see is the final number. I would much rather have access to the two underlying numbers.
The odds of the player starting, in particular, would be interesting. I'd love to be able to look at a table listing the odds of starting for everyone on my team, or on a PL squad. The predicted lineups are not very useful in this respect.
Everyone on the site is offering opinions as to how nailed-on each player is... why not publish the nailed-on-ness that is used for the prediction tools?

What way is there of measuring?
It's the managers decision.. how can the people running this site have any idea who will start after a Summer of manager change / transfers / academy players coming through.
It's all down to hunches and looking at what he's done before, but there's no science to it.

But those hunches are already present under-the-hood i the points predictor. I would just like to see them. The odds of starting are percentages based on available information, just like odds of scoring goals or getting assists.

Thats a really good idea. Perhaps if there was a function where we could customise our own RMT tool by adjusting the likelihood of starts for certain players. You should put that forward to Mark because we are constantly guessing who is likely to get the starts as you say.

Well, I would not take any numbers as the gospel truth. And the granularity for nailed-on-ness would not need to be extreme -just 100%, 75%, 50% 25%, 0% would give enough info to make an informed choice.

Reread your post & I'm down.

Better yet, just do away with the whole 'odds he starts affects his ability to score #' altogether.

For example, Jovetić gets the same rating as Dzeko type deal... if he didn't start? Oh well, that's on you the player to know.

Aso, if the RMT #'s are somehow based on the weekly Team News section here then how valuable can it really be? 😉

1st draft, how is it looking? I plan on running 4-5-1....barring transfers yet to be made....trying to go against the grain.

GK - Howard (Krul) - Not too sure on having 2 GK, but nothing to do with 0.5 if I dropped Krul atm.
Def - Baines - Filipe Luis - Shaw - Debuchy (Bruce)
    Mid - Hazard - Fabregas - Ozil - Eriksen - Sigurdsson
Att - Rooney (C) (Zamora, Barnes) - Barnes supposedly @ 4.5 will start for Burnley w/ Vokes hurt.

It's the only way to avoid a price drop...

Averaged 1 goal every 6 games for Celtic, nailed on, will have a bigger role to play with the departures of his best teammates etc etc. He's the one for me I reckon.

Just a quick minor point but fair play to Adkins as Soton actually made significant improvements in the weeks prior to Poch's arrival. It wasn't simply a case of being hopeless under Adkins followed by a miraculous improvement under Poch.

True.. just adjusting to life in the PL.
To be fair though, Poch did do a great job and had them playing great football last season.
Lot of credit has to go to the club as well, the academy is phenomenal.

so this is where I'm currently, knowing full well it could totally change if some big transfers come through:

        Mannone - Krul
        Luis - Debuchy - Shaw - Bavies - Wisdom
        Cesc - Rambo - Eriksen - Mata - 4.5m
        Rooney - Dzeko - Austin

Yeah they may be slow but they are both quality defenders as long as they don't play a high line. The fixtures seem to work better early on too. I know it's QPR but Newcastle are shite defending anyway

Well its a brave strategy to bench defenders from decent teams. I hope it goes well for you.

Just remember not to break anything when Spurs, Arsenal or Chelsea keep clean sheets away from home and you have one of there defenders on the bench.

Did I mention i liked the rest of your team? Looks tasty. Who are you considering for the 4.5 mid?

atm Albrighton but I'm partial to a DM like Wanyama or Tiote who is guaranteed playing time and can pip in the 2-3 emergency points you should only really be expecting from a 4.5m mid

All I know Martinez and Kenwright are very keen and probably willing to spend 2believron on him. Was rumoured to have agreed a fee, then it came out Mourinho was gonna keep him and Lukaku was gonna travel with Chelsea, now they are saying he's training with Anderlecht (his former club), possibly awaiting a transfer away from Chelsea

I was skeptical about whether we would be able to sign Lukaku but starting to believe now

Think Pelle is being harshly dismissed due to previous Erdevisie failures though.. very possible he could score a bucketload in the first 10 gameweeks with those fixtures

Maybe that's not the end of the world.. at the end of the day, a guy who's going to be near the goal all game is somebody we want in our teams I guess.. especially with Tadic in the side.. creates a ridiculous amount of chances according to everything I've read about him.

Yeah. From what I've read Tadic isnt as creative as Lallana though. More direct. Reckon Pelle will get some goals alright. He's big and will cause problems. Whether he has more in his locker to deal with the Premier league defenders I don't know.

I have to admit, I've only seen him from his Youtube videos... but he seems a real handful in the air, and that indicates that he should be well suited to the PL.

Might wait for the first game v Liverpool to assess how he does, but then he could be worth a punt for the next 11 weeks or so after that...

Saying that I have never WCed for GW2, I've always waited at least 3-4 weeks, but usually 6-7 in my case...

Last year I squandered it in GW12... urgh... what a waste, after two weeks my team as a mess, and the original team started outscoring my new team...

I remember going with DDG and some Reading GKer one year. It ended in disaster. Same with Mignolet last year. I think I'll play it safe with 2 starting 4.5m keepers.

True. Migs didnt work out for me either last year. But DDG's fixtures as so plum at the start and the 4.5s dont exactly fill me with confidence. It's tough when you're relying on Newcastle for a clean sheet lol though I do think they'll be better this year.

Tadic will be a better asset. The Serbian playmaker can play across a number of attacking positions.

He created 46 more chances than any other player in the Eredivisie last season (133), as well as completing the most accurate through balls (16) and crosses (64) in the league to help Twente to a third-placed finish.

Yeah, agreed... the first game is difficult so you don't really want to start with them, but it gives to a better indication of how they will get on in the PL...

Not ideal to be planning transfers for GW2, but his next 11 fixtures afterwards are delightful...

          Any other good choices?

What do you think about the team in full?

          Thanks!

One of my all time fpl faves. Gotta be some tough competition from Giacherrini (spelling?) though. That guy's class, better than Gomez

One of my faves too, yeah there's competition for him isn't there, he's class though and should get some starts, just wish i knew because he'd be in as my 4th mid

I'm keeping an eye on that one. Bargain if he's starting as a #10. Poyet does seem to rate him http://www.sportsmole.co.uk/football/sunderland/news/poyet-gomez-is-a-special-player_164831.html

Are you really David Silva? Why don't you include yourself?
