Moving Target

Moving Target – Ben Davies

Maurico Pochettino made his first foray into the transfer market as manager of Tottenham by snapping up Ben Davies and Michel Vorm from Swansea City. The former arrives at White Hart Lane for a fee reported to be in the region of £10 million as the north London outfit saw off Liverpool in the race for his signature.

Having made his debut in the midweek friendly win over Toronto, the 21-year-old left-back discussed his move with the club’s official website:

“I’m very happy to be joining a club like Spurs. It was such a good opportunity for me and there was no doubt in my mind about it. It’s a great place to be and something I jumped at the chance of being part of..I just want to play as many games as I can this season. My aim is to come in and do my best and work hard under the new gaffer.”

The History

A product of the Swansea youth system, Davies was propelled into the first-team as a 19-year-old after first-choice left-back Neil Taylor suffered a serious ankle injury at the start of the 2012/13 campaign. Despite a lack of top-level experience, Davies was afforded the chance to impress by then-manager Michael Laudrup and went on to feature 37 times in his debut Premier League season, producing a goal and two assists.

Despite Taylor’s return to full fitness last term, Davies continued as the Swans first-choice left-back under Laudrup and replacement Gary Monk. Racking up another 34 league appearances, his raids down the flank served up two goals and an assist for the Welsh outfit.

On the international stage, Davies represented Wales Under 19 side on three occasions before being handed his senior debut in October 2012. He’s since gone on to represent his country 10 times and remains ahead of former team-mate Taylor in the pecking order.

The Prospects

Pocchetino’s penchant for attacking full-backs in his preferred 4-2-3-1 system bodes well for Davies’ Fantasy potential over the season ahead. The raiding runs of Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw were a feature of Southampton’s play under the Argentine last season and the new man in charge will be keen to replicate a system that helped his former side to an eighth place finish in his only full campaign at the helm.

A look at Davies’ distribution in 2013/14 underlines he was more than a little unlucky just to pick up a single assist. The left-back produced 31 key passes for the Swans last term – joint seventh amongst defenders – and created a goalscoring opportunity for team-mates every 97.6 minutes; up from 178.9 minutes in his debut campaign and illustrating his improvement in the final third.

Furthermore, Davies improved his successful dribbles from 43.2% to 51.7% in 2013/4 and also improved his shot accuracy (from 22.2% to 33.3%) and the frequency of attempts on goal (336.2 minutes per effort compared to 357.8 the season before) to further indicate the 21-year-old’s growing stature.

Bearing in mind that Pochettino led Southampton to 15 clean sheets in the previous season – seven at home and eight away, more than any teams on their travels – there’s a real belief that Spurs could offer us strong potential at the back, boosting Davies’ prospects at both ends of the pitch.

Another cause for optimism is the youngster’s price across the Fantasy games. Starting off as a Swansea player, he sets you back just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.5 in the Sky Sports game; bearing in mind fellow full-back Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen are priced at 6.0 apiece, Davies certainly has the potential to provide us excellent value. His move also allows Taylor the chance to reclaim the Swansea left-back berth and, at 4.5 in FPL, he’s now back on some managers’ radars ahead of four decent home games in the first seven for the Swans.

The opening schedule also smiles in Davies’ favour. With Pochettino’s side set to face just three of last season’s top seven in the opening 12 Gameweeks – including home matches with QPR, West Brom, Southampton, Newcastle and Stoke – the young Welshman is handed the chance to play his way into our Fantasy plans from the outset.

I've never done it, so I might consider actually WCing straight away to see if it affects how my season goes...

The reasoning: no one knows how the season will start... so plan for the first GW, then WC... having some clue as to who will rise, and who is showing form etc...

I know most diehards would have you believe that it takes 3-7 weeks (maybe longer) to gauge form... but even that is not an exact science...

Yeah but if I did that I still would have to pick before the first deadline, thus negating my reason for WCing in the first place... which is to have some idea of who is playing/going to play well...

And secondly, I kinda just want to try something that I haven't done before... perhaps it will lead to a different experience...

      Depends on the strategy.

Some people I know gambled with the highest-scoring potential team in GW1 (especially if there is a DGWE1), and then WC straight away in GW2.

Most people WC in GW3/4 during the 1st international break, where positions/team formations are getting clearer and there is longer time to play price rises.

Some people just keep it until late in the game, the lucky and stubborn ones.

The idea that you can accrue more TV in the first International Break is a myth... the two weeks away from football creates a huge void in transfer activity... slows right down up until about 2-3 days before the next deadline...

In my experience the first week (or right after a few huge hauls) is the best time to make money...

Not always that week. It depends on who's banging them in. There are many weeks where it could be an advantage to cash in on the rapid price rises.

You may be right. But WC duing int break is definitely an advantage when you can change and chop players for 2 weeks without worrying about any point hits.

So basically it's about using WC when it is needed. Usually to make major haul to your team (getting players that are performing very well, ditching the deadwoods/underperforms), and try to gain a bit value in the end.

Jelly to Giroud or a 7.5/8/even 9 isn't that far away. Very early injury or bandwagon I.e Arnie. Siggy. Tadic and I have a 3 4 3 again, yet knowing I started with bonafide killers in my preliminary front 6 (and Jellys fixtures to boot), to start, whilst letting the brave souls punt on unknowns from the start!!

Very tempting 4 4 2. Even foregoing Luis allows for maybe Rooney and Aguero to start, plus a deadly 4 in mid

I like the spine of that team. But does Jelavic rotate with one of Wisdom/Mariappa ? In any case I'm wary of rotating attackers, their points are unpredictable.

      Consider :
      Jelavic -> 4.5
      Mariappa -> Shaw
      4.0 -> Davies
      DDG -> Krul ?

Gives you a strong backline of Luis Shaw Debuchy Davies Wisdom. Basically if I'm playing 4 at the back I'd want at least 3 or 4 to be nailed on title team defenders.

I simply have to say something...

    Spurs????

No thanks. They said they have a squad that can compete so no need to spend, having spent loads last year. Tosh!!!!

City alone MURDERED Spuds 11-1 over both fixtures last year. I cant see them even making the Europa and Ben fookin Davies and a Lamela brace vs the blind school won't change my opinion

Spurs may be bad and is definitely not the best team in North London, but FPL is about picking the right players.

Erik is still a great pick imo.

Not a bad team. Perhaps a different 3rd defender rotation.
Man Utd covered only by DDG is against the grain.

Let's try this again but actually in response to your post....

If you're going with De Gea I'd downgrade Krul to a 4.0 and I'd downgrade one of Debuchy or Jagielka to a 4.5 to be able to use those funds from Krul and the defender on upgrading Wiemann personally.

    Dead Zone:

    Give me your best 'Pro-Tips'

    Examples include:

    -Don't take hits for defenders

-When choosing your second non-starting keeper make sure he's from a side you'd never expect or want 3 outfielders from

-Hits for DGWs are typically justifiable

    Ok, go!

      1. +Treat every transfer like A HIT. If you don't think it will get you at least 4 points immediately, don't do it.+ (for late season)
      2. Use one free transfer per gameweek tops, do not take hits if you can't justify it logically.
      3. Keep a player you've transferred in for at least few matches.
      4. A hit should be worthwhile for more than one gameweek.
      5. Don't take hits for punts.
      6. Don't focus too much on price changes, 4 points is often better than 0.1m.
      7. Save vanilla WC for after the Jan WC.
      8. Think clearly, don't get caught up in "chasing last week's points".
      9. Sleep on a big transfer decision before making it.
      10. Never make transfers for players who still have matches to play before the next PL match. Last thing you want is to bring someone in early and then have to take a hit due to injuries/suspensions from late/midweek games (looking at you Aguero).
      11. Focus on nailed on players.
      12. Wait for official injury confirmation from the club before knee-jerking and ditching a good player.
      13. Be mindful of the exact price when a player is set to drop as oftentimes that single 0.1m doesn't change your selling price yet.
      14. Careful of players linked heavily with moves out of the league during January.
      15. Watch as many games as you can so you don't rely on transfers based solely on black/white numbers.

      and here's some from Protocol:

      1. Too much info (as with too little info) is also a very bad thing, don't trend - make calculated decisions. 80% of the info online, you need to take with a pinch of salt...and tequila.
      2. Plan up to 6 GW's ahead - Hits for 1 - 2 GW's seldom pay off.
      3. DON'T make transfers too early in the week.
      4. A cheap defense with 4.0 and 4.5 only - will hurt you. spread the love around a decently balanced team.
      5. Hits for defenders... erm, no - you need a cleany to pay for the hit, even then you are on 0 for the GW - if it is a long term prospect, that is another story.
      6. Rotation, sucks - well in my case, the points were mostly benched. For me this year - 3 starters in defense each week and a bench with preferred sub order. Swopping out keepers and defenders each week...aint nobody got time for that.
      7. 38 GW's - if you do badly in one, don't go ape and take -16 point hit. There is plenty of time to catch up - this is "a marathon, not a sprint" - keep that in mind.
      7. Peanut butter and Mayo is surprisingly tasty.

Price rises and team value are invaluable.
      Bandwagons are a must EARLY
Go with who u think will score the most points regardless of ANYTHING else, especially when being new, you must set a realistic goal of a good finish in a mini league.

Can't say I agree with many of these tips to be honest. The winds of change have swept through FPL as of last season.

In my ML, many of the guys at the top were the guys who weren't concerned about taking hits on bandwagons. Doing -4 or -8 on many occasions. Ramsey scores a brace, get him in.......etc.

Even a complete novice who was practically WC-ing every single week didn't finish that far behind me.

I'm not saying to go to those extremes, but I'd say don't be afraid to take a 4pter for the players who are in hot form.

      1) do not get in dgw players for the sake of getting them. view the next few fixtures to see whether u want to have these players after the dgw.
      2) dgw does not make a poor player good..form is still impt especially for attacker even if there is good dgw fixtures.
      3) do not be afraid to take hits. at least u try rather than u miss the opportunity..be sensible when u take hits though and view the transfer as a whole period of 4-6 weeks and not 1 week punt.
      4) do not worry about taking hits for defenders if your outgoing def has poor fix and ur incoming def has good fixtures and maybe rising value.
      5) getting a 2nd non-starting keeper i would choose from a promotion team which is likely to leak the most goals = higher chance that the 1st choice keeper would be dropped lol...or choose 1 with the lowest ownership to prevent price fall
      6) never be afraid to double up if the team is on form/good fixture. speroni+ward..coleman+baines..not to mention sturridge+suarez..and hazard+oscar for a period
      7) play the defenders with the best fixtures..not merely by rather the player is "premium" or not
      8) never be stubborn..get yaya/gerrard/ramsey in late like last season hurts alot of ppl. no such thing as a causal move
      7) have fun and follow your own guts. u are playing the game..not following people to play the game.

What are some of the influences which effect your fantasy selections? I have been recently attempting to create a ranking system in which to scale players based on certain factors which we would use that effect our decision making.
For example I have Fixtures, rotation risk, form, bonus point potential, fitness and the team they play for as factors.
What other factors do you take into consideration when making a selection?

Costa for me. But obviously there's a big difference in price there so it depends what you will do with the saving if u get Giroud, and if you have at least one decent Arse MFer.

A lot on here think Costa will flop, but I've been swatting up on him, watching as many vids as I can find. And I think his game suits the Prem perfectly and he'll be nailed on for a team fighting for the league title

Pre-season just good for figuring out formations etc. Like LVG sticking with 3-4-3. Good little nugget that is

Morning chaps, so does no Ozil, Mert or Pod put you off getting 2-3 ARS players in your team?

Kos often struggles without the big German alongside him, which is putting me off Debuchy a little.

And no Ozil means less creativity for the likes of Giroud, Ramsey and Sanchez. Although a front 4 of Sanchez, Cazorla, Giroud and 1 of Wilshere/Ox/Ramsey/Rosicky should still do well.

Giroud on pens against Palace too if no Arteta I guess,

People will disagree, but I think Giroud is the best attacking player to own now, as long as Wenger doesn't sign another striker

So an assist to the big guy. I'll take that. 😉

If Walcott is confirmed healthy, now that is a different story.

        Morning Champ,

The German trio don't return to Arsenal till 11 Aug so Wenger has apparently confirmed they will miss CPL - see link below

        http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2704711/Arsene-Wenger-says-Arsenals-German-World-Cup-winning-stars-miss-start-Premier-League-season.html

eve, lei, MCY, avl, TOT, che in the 6 weeks to follow looks tough. Think I may ditch Debuchy and go with 1/2 of Ramsey/Sanchez/Giroud.

Looking at fixtures there are so many midfielders with good fixture and attacking potential but very few defender with cs potential.
