Moving Target

Moving Target – Steven Caulker

Just five days after signing Rio Ferdinand on a free transfer, Harry Redknapp continued to strengthen his back line for the season ahead with the acquisition of Steven Caulker from relegated Cardiff City.

Joining up on a four-year contract, the 22-year-old admitted that the presence of his former Spurs boss and the arrival of the veteran centre-half were both key to his decision:

“I am very excited to be here. It was important for me to be back playing in the Premier League, and Harry Redknapp has given me the opportunity to be at this fantastic club. Harry was a big factor for me, having worked with him at Tottenham. He was very keen for me to join and that was a big plus, knowing the manager wants you. Being able to play with Rio was also a big draw. He has been a role model of mine for many years, along with Ledley King. To have the opportunity to play alongside him was something I felt I couldn’t miss out on. Our first aim this season has to be to get to 40 points, to make sure we stay up. That’s our first goal.”

The History

A product of the Tottenham youth academy, Caulker’s career got underway in 2009/10, when he played 44 times on loan at Yeovil Town. The centre-half was again farmed out to a lower league club the following season, scoring twice in 29 matches for Bristol City, before making his way to Swansea in a year-long loan deal in 2011/12.

Under the guidance of then-manager Brendan Rodgers, Caulker featured on 26 occasions for the Premier League outfit, with only a knee injury curtailing his game time. Retained by his parent club for the following season, he failed to nail down a regular role and, after making just 18 appearances under Andre Villas-Boas, was sold to Cardiff City last summer.

Nailed-on for The Bluebirds, Caulker was the only defender to play all 38 league matches in last term’s top-flight and his aerial threat in the opposition box saw him score on five occasions; only Martin Skrtel and Seamus Coleman, with seven and six respectively, registered more.

On the international stage, Caulker has turned out 21 times for England youth teams and found the net twice. Despite scoring on his debut for the senior side back in 2012, he has yet to feature for the Three Lions since.

The Prospects

Having watched his side muster a mere nine clean sheets at home in 23 Championship matches last season, it’s no surprise to see Redknapp strengthen at the back as he attempts to keep the R’s afloat. Ferdinand’s experience and leadership qualities, allied with the agile Caulker’s threat in the opposition box, suggest QPR have every reason to approach the upcoming campaign with increased optimism.

Redknapp – who handed Caulker his Spurs debut – lavished praise upon the new boy after the deal was confirmed by the club’s official website:

“Steven’s a top player, so we’re delighted to have him at QPR. I know the ability he has and I think it’s an important signing for the club – for the here and now, and for the future. I had him at Tottenham and I was very surprised when they decided to let him go last summer, because I thought he had a big future there. He’s young; he’s a good age; he’s already a fine player but he has so much more potential – it’s a really excellent signing for the club. When good players like Steven become available, who can come in and have a real impact, you’ve got to try and get them. I’m sure he will come in and show exactly what he’s capable of – he’s got everything to be a top, top centre-half, so I couldn’t be more pleased to have him.”

Barring injuries, the Caulker-Ferdinand partnership looks set to be rolled out for the entirety of the 2014/15, leaving the likes of Richard Dunne and Clint Hill as no more than bench-warmers. Coming in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.5 in the Sky Sports game, Caulker’s extra goal threat makes him the most expensive option amongst Redknapp’s backline but, as his heroics for Cardiff showed last term, he’s more than capable of justifying the extra outlay. With 19 bonus points accrued, he ended the previous campaign on 122 points – 15th amongst defenders – despite the Bluebirds mustering a mere seven clean sheets and conceding on 74 occasions.

The only real issue is that Caulker’s attacking potential makes him difficult to bench and trickier to play the fixtures – two of those five goals arrived on the road last time around. Bearing in mind that QPR rotate home/away with Palace for 34 of the 38 Gameweeks, some will perhaps turn to the cheaper Ferdinand, at 4.5, as a more budget-friendly option to dovetail with the Eagles. Such a pairing would hand you eight kind home fixtures (HUL, WHM, SUN, BUR, STO, LEI, AVL, SUN) in the first 10 rounds of matches, for example.

Further analysis of last season’s stats, however, underline Caulker’s capabilities and strengthen his case for consideration. He had more touches inside the opposition box (116) than any other defender and, as a result, was also top for attempts in the area (32) amongst backline options. If Ferdinand can help bolster resilience at the back, then, a 5.0 price tag could prove excellent value for his new central defensive partner.

Well, I think I have finally got a team that I am happy with subject to the dilemma above (will probably depend on how RVP looks). 🙂 Hopefully that will be the final piece in my jigsaw.

I've had to make 2 sacrifices to keep certain players and upgrade the 3rd striker. I've had to sacrifice having a Chelsea defender and also Hazard for Fabregas so I could have Wickham instead of Wood. Leaves me with:

    Lloris | Gilks
    Shaw | Davies | Caulker | Ward | Targett
    Sanchez | Fabregas | Tadic | Sigurdsson | Albrighton
    Sturridge | Rooney | Wickham

Pretty happy with that at the moment!

Here is my team at the moment, can i have some opinions please.

    De gea, Krul
Shaw, Filipe Luis, Davis, Moore, Vlaar
    Silva, Fabregas, Eriksen, Sigurdsson, Albrighton
    Rooney, Sturridge, Wickham

    I’ll be playing a 3-4-3 formation.

I've been thinking of making some adjustments,
Lamela for Eriksen (depending on who will being playing behind the striker)
    Pelle or Rivere for Wickham
Fabregas for Schurrle (depending on schurrle getting game time)

I have a suggestion for this tool which you may or may not consider.

I assume the scores are multiplied by some sort of "nailed on ness" % factor.

It would be great if you could see what factor has been applied to each score and have the option for the user to change it. E.g. If you have Mariappa at 75% but I think he is nailed on, I could change him to 90% for my purposes.

not right now, but he has been in a lot of the drafts. it's normally fabregas & fletcher or sigurdsson and one of the cluster of 8.5 strikers. will probably have a look at other way to fit cesc in though

But does this mean we should buy him, or the finishers he creates chances for. i.e. Hazard and Costa.

Add to that Chelsea created the 2nd most chance in the whole of last season with possibly some strikers who can score.

So would this push you more to Fab, Haz or Costa?

think it's defined as a chance a player is expected to score. so that's at least 27 assists he should have had last season (at least as it doesnt then include all the ones he got from setting up non clear cut chances)

Ozil was highest the season before with 24, and he only managed 4 at Arsenal. The highest in the PL was Silva with 9.

Hard to get a feel for just how much these stats actually count for in Spain.

that seems remarkably low. these definitely the same stats? is suarez on 22 on the list?

No Suarez was nowhere near 22. The source I looked at must have vastly different parameters.

What might be useful, is that last season Barca won their opening game 7-0 against Levante. I watched that game, and Barca were good, but it was the worst defensive performance I have ever seen. Fabregas got 5 assists in that game, and I remember a stat which said he had created 15 clear cut chances after 4 or 5 games in La Liga. The early season trouncings might be buffering his stats slightly, for a player who is still fantastic, but not at the level he was at Arsenal.

Because they are in Europe and it was a good bit of business. Oscar can play on the flank as well. Also, for the first weeks of the season Oscar likely to be eased back into the season after the WC (along with a lot of the semi finalists)

I agree Fabregas is better than Oscar, but so was Mata. Most agreed, and it seemed he was favoured because he was more workman like.

Also, if Oscar plays wide, then Willian would be benched. A £30m acquisition that Mou loves.

It just seems like a minefield, and when Fabregas could very well play deeper, I would say Hazard is worth the premium, and other 9m mids would be better. Ramsey, Ozil, Mata, Silva all very capable of doing better than Fabregas IMO.

Yea why not roll the dice with Pelle. But consider downgrading Shaw and upgrade Wanyama to a 5.0? Just monitor United's defence - the current backline is just too prone to individual mistakes (smalling, evans, jones, rafael...and valencia defensively still an unknown quality).

I'm half expecting him to start but for 7.5m I'd need to be certain. Same situation with Remy at Pool.

They have high risk reward too. Remy and Schurle. They can easily explode. I am more willing to make a punt on them instead of Tadic or De Jong

Unlikely. Most German players won't be fully fit for start of season. May become an option but looks like a 'super' sub, just like he was for Germany.

Not to start with. Defo looks like the Chelsea winger most likely to score from open play (inc Haz) but couldn't force his way past Willian last season when he was doing nothing.

Never looked the same when he had to play 60+ mins. More an impact sub until he can get consistency.

Definitely a wait-and-see then. It's annoying when some of the best prospects are the least dependable in terms of minutes.

    RMT

    Begovic (Krul)

    Filipe Luis/Debuchy/Davies (Wisdom, Mariapa)

    Sanchez/Lamela/Mata/Sig (Ince)

    Rooney/Dzeko/Pellè

Might end up changing Lamela to Eriksen not overly sure also considering changing Ince to Albrighton and Pellè to Bony

Wisdom (WBA) is the common consensus as the best 4.0 choice. There's a slew of 4.5's and 5's though, shouldn't be too hard.

It's a pretty risky transfer for arsenal i think.

      I would take it.

Campbell is a relative unknown with a couple decent games at the WC

Balotelli could be that missing forward which could put us in real contention

yeah, im leaning that way too. Balotelli can be trouble but could pay off and he is quite young still. Would love another quality forward.

Sadly at work all day & wouldn't be able to give an insightful opinion on Burnley's friendly this afternoon, until either late tonight or tomorrow mid-evening...

However, just a brief injury update (on main fpl prospects) that could interest you guys if you own any of these:

Heaton (first choice keeper) has a minor calf complaint & did not feature in our first friendly

Kightly, again, a cheap option (5.0) first teamer, has not featured much in training...

An outside bet is midfielder Dean Marney, been injured a lot for us last season, but if he gets upto match fitness, will dislodge Dave Jones in CMF, so as an extremely cheap midfield (probable starter) he's certainly one to monitor... Certainly chips in with the odd goal & assist, & at 4.5 you can't get much more....

    Krul, Elliot
Terry, Debuchy, Ben Davies, Mariappa, Wisdom
    Sanchez, Hazard, Eriksen, Sigurdsson, Albrighton
    RVP, Dzeko, Austin

Where would you spend my remaining 0.5m?

I am happy to play Krull in every game until I probably play my wildcard in GW8 or so.

With the exception of Man. City an home in GW1, they have kinder fixtures until Spurs away in GW9.

    My two thoughts are:

    a) Albrighton to Steven Davis

    b) Mariappa to Ward

      Keep Albrighton,

Or just keep the 0.5 to catch any early price rises which may be just out of your reach.
