Moving Target

Moving Target – Jordon Mutch

After strengthening his defence with the acquisition of Rio Ferdinand and Steven Caulker, Harry Redknapp’s third signing of the summer saw Jordon Mutch arrive at QPR from Cardiff City. The midfielder has signed a four-year deal with the Loftus Road outfit and follows former Bluebirds team-mate Caulker back into the Premier League just three months after the Welsh club dropped down into the Championship.

Discussing his move with the R’s official website, Mutch was delighted to be given the chance to prove himself in the English top-flight once again:

“I don’t see a better place for me than QPR at the moment. The club is heading in the right direction and I’m really excited about the season ahead. I thought I had a good first season in the Premier League last year with Cardiff, so I was delighted when QPR came in for me and offered a route back to the top flight. I’m really happy to be here and hopefully we can do well this season.”

The History

Mutch spent five years in the Derby County youth system before moving to Birmingham City as a 15-year-old in 2007. Handed his debut by the St Andrews outfit the following year, Mutch was then confined to a wheelchair for three months after his rapid rate of growth caused fractures in both feet.

Fully recovered, he was sent out on loan to Hereford Town (four appearances) and Doncaster Rovers (two goals in 17 league games) in 2009/10 before being farmed out to Watford the following season, where he netted five times and provided six assists in 23 matches. Mutch was unable to convince the Blues of his worth, though, and, after a total of two goals and nine assists in 36 outings, was sold to Cardiff in June 2012.

The midfielder’s first season with the Bluebirds was far from impressive, though. Mutch failed to produce any returns over 22 Championship appearances and was far from our Fantasy radars when the Welsh outfit arrived in the Premier League last summer. Initially, his Fantasy fortunes looked non-existent after he was handed just one minute’s game time in the opening five matches but Mutch’s eye for goal prevailed, as he proceeded to serve up seven goals and five assists over the course of his first year in the English top division.

On the international stage, the 22-year-old has featured at youth level a total of nine times for England but is yet to make the step up to the senior side.

The Prospects

There’s no doubt Redknapp requires a goal-getting presence in midfield to take the pressure off Charlie Austin up front. Last season, Junior Hoilett was top scoring midfielder for the R’s with just four goals in 38 Championship appearances and although the Canadian has impressed over the summer, Redknapp’ admitted Mutch’s record in the Premier League was a big factor in persuading him to splash the cash:

“Jordon’s a fine young player, with a big, big future. He’s already shown what he can do at this level with Cardiff last season with a decent goals return – and this move will provide him with a great platform to take his game on to the next level. He wants to learn and improve his game. He’s a good pro with a great attitude and this is a big opportunity for him at QPR.”

Despite being limited to 2,399 minutes for the Bluebirds last year, Mutch still managed a total of 55 attempts last year. This equates to 43.6 minutes per shot – put into perspective, it’s just behind Eden Hazard (41.5), Christian Eriksen (42.2) and David Silva (42.4). In terms of minutes per goal, the QPR new boy’s average of 342.7 minutes in 2013/14 was quicker than the likes of Adam Lallana and Juan Mata (355.8) and underlines his potential.

Indeed, Mutch’s arrival looks to put pressure on Hoilett for the season ahead. A recent change in tactics has seen Redknapp roll out a 3-4-1-2 formation over the summer, with Hoilett stationed behind the front pair, but the Canadian may be forced out wide or even onto the bench if the R’s boss turns to the more prolific Mutch to take up the role in “the hole”.

After proving himself as a genuine budget option last term, Mutch could be set for further investment once again. Yet to be listed in the Fantasy games, a cost of 5.5 (the same as Adel Taarabt) looks the likeliest scenario in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game on the back of last season’s heroics for the Bluebirds – more expensive than the likes of Hoilett and Joey Barton (5.0), for example, but as the numbers above suggest, Mutch’s frequency of attempts is more in line with pricier alternatives.

With home encounters against Hull, Sunderland and Stoke in the first five Gameweeks, Redknapp’s side have a decent opening run in front of their own fans. Certainly, trips to Spurs and United dent their opening appeal but, bearing in mind Mutch scored three times against Liverpool and also netted against Chelsea last season, it’s fair to say that Redknapp’s new acquisition has already shown signs that he’s more than capable of rising to the occasion.

On paper maybe. Completely new system, bound to be some confusion and Bony likes playing you lot iirc. 2 great fixtures to follow, if he nicks one I've pre-empted a bandwagon that could be tricky for many to get on

United played all quality teams (except Galaxy) and conceded 1 goal from open play, they've taken to the system quite well and quickly

bottom of last page because I think it still merits discussion (though I'm sure it has before, I just wasn't around for it)..

Filipe Luis is nailed, he has to be.

He was arguably the best, if not one of the best, left back(s) in the world last season. He played for a club that won its domestic league and was a CL runner-up. He's 28 and should have started for the Selecao if Scolari wasn't such a coward. He was also given the #3 jersey.

You don't spend big money on someone like that, and he doesn't leave the club he's excelling at, just to rotate with a right-footed right back who deputized last season (albeit did very well in the role).

Mourinho might want to sub him on after the game is won in the 70th minute... who knows...

              I didn't say he wasn't... I agree with that...

There are 5 defenders all wanting to play... we simply do not know who will be dropped... anyone saying otherwise is just guessing...

Mourinho might want to start with what worked last year... of course it is entirely possible that he thinks Luis is ready to fit straight into his team and start from the very beginning...

All I'm saying is that you simply can't be completely sure about it...

Unless Mourinho says otherwise, you just can't know for sure...

yeah and "we can't be sure" that a player won't get injured Friday night at his home, but it doesn't make us run scared from logic.

The fact remains that there are 5 defenders all vying for a spot... Mourinho will have his own ideas about how to start the season...

Saying he will do one thing, doesn't make it true...

There is uncertainty, otherwise we wouldn't be discussing it...

    DZ....question re Jovetic vs Dzeko

Given that when Aguero is fit he will be nailed on. The question is who will compliment Kun and the team best? We all know what Dzeko brings to the table with respect to his style of play and what he brings to the team overall. Have not seen too much of Jovetic....can anyone shed some light on how his style will help the team overall? Does he compliment their system when on the pitch with Kun? This might help our decision in choosing between the two.

I think that over the course of the season Jovetic will see more minutes, probably at the expense of Dzeko (and Kun if he's injured), but it will still be way less than Dzeko's overall minutes...

Dzeko, theoretically, but he doesn't come out of the gates firing and Jovetic does, then could easily find himself on the bench. Really hoping that we get more clarity on Aguero's fitness soon.

Dzeko and Kun makes more sense as a combo. Jovetic is a brilliant player but not a striker in the traditional sense. Having said that if he's the best player on the pitch he can't be dropped so it's up to him I suppose. Way more talented than Dzeko imo

I always thought Jovetic played a bit more off the front, almost a "No.10" if you like. Dzeko is more of a traditional forward and personally as a pair i think Kun and Dzeko would be the better fit.

Jovetic is more versatile, can play in wide positions as well as in the 'hole'. Plus I remember how effective Tevez and Aguero were together. But can't ignore Dzeko's aerial abilty.

I can see all 3 playing in some games. Especially in the home bankers. Beside Silva, Jovetic is better than any of City mids. He might become something like negative OOP

I think when all 4 are fit, pellegrini views jovetic as kun's backup, and dzeko as negredo's backup. So with negredo injured Dzeko starts, and with Aguero injured, Jovetic starts.

    Current team is

    Krul/Foster
    Azpi/BDavies/Jevans/Taylor/Cameron
    Sanchez/Siggy
    Rooney/Dzeko

Basically i have 30M on the last 4 players, although if Verm signs for United i'll swap him for Jevans.

Who do people think is the best Chelsea coverage?

As I understand it, CBs will still dominate in low scoring games, but they have attempted to balance it up in the direction of FBs and Mids by adding BPS points for dribbles...

But the fact that they have stopped handing out 1 BPS pt deductions for conceding 2 goals, this will help defenders even more...

Overall FB's benefit most, but CB's will still score more bonus that FBs... and FWDs will still likely be receiving the most overall...

Great midfield and defence, but looks a little weak upfront F, are you struggling for funds, cos you need Keane... and I prefer to wait untl GW24 to get Dempsey... but not feeling Martins at all, he'll be a little tired after this MLS allstars game, and Houston are stepping it up recently... good option for the DGW though... but I'll be going without him... Wondo has two away games, I'm not convinced about him... would rather just keep BWP for one good home game myself...

      I'm WCing myself...

      Penedo 3m
Bernardez Parkhurst Loyd (Hagglund Birnbaum Onyongo)
Jorales LD Zusi Valeri Porales (Zardes)
      Keane BWP (Akindele 4m)

Any thoughts on how to improve this team? Waiting for news on Marshall of course...

I'm planning on Jorales > Dempsey in GW24...

I think the exact same! What swings it for me is fabregas being a dull 1.5m cheaper than deigo costa though. If suarez hadn't left there would be an awful lot more 3-4-3's, but as it stand, 3-5-2 gives better attacking coverage imho. 4-5-1 is actually viable too, with CPL & CHE & MUN set for muchos clean sheets, although admittedly it's a nightmare trying to work out Jose's plans for his back 5.

      sup doc?
Tyrant, enjoying it but a couple caveats.
The american husband and wife actors are one dimensional and annoying. ]
It's a bit cliche and condescending with the pure, holier than thou American coming to the rescue of the ignorant arabs, who are either helpless or barbaric and need saving from themselves (could Gideon be showing his true colours here?)
That aside I'm still enjoying it a lot. Really hope it doesn't get too cheesy though. I want it to all come crashing down on the docs head tbh 😛

        Hey champ.

Oh trust me, I've thought the same. The wife is pretty 1-D but she's nice to look at hahaha. Great point about Gideon.

Interesting enough premise for me to give it a go though, as an alternative to Homeland. Hope it grows and gets better. What episode are you on?

However, The Leftovers is THE best new show right now. Check it out. 🙂

            6 epis so far.

It's about a Rapture-like event that makes 2% of the Earth's population disappear. The show is about how "The Leftovers" cope with this event.
