The Burning Question – Will Robin van Persie Be “Essential” Once Again?

It’s time for the third instalment in our Burning Questions series, focussing on some of the main dilemmas facing Fantasy managers for the season ahead. Having quizzed our contributors on Alexis Sanchez’ prospects and Defensive Heavy Hitters, we now turn our attentions on a certain Dutch forward, as United prepare for their first season under new boss Louis van Gaal.

When Van Gaal’s appointment was first announced, our expectations for Robin van Persie soared. The veteran manager’s preferred 4-3-3 formation looked set to force Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata onto the flanks and hand his compatriot the lone forward role but, since taking the helm, Van Gaal has continued with the 3-4-1-2 formation that earned Holland third place at the recent World Cup.

Rooney and Mata have resultantly flourished in central roles for the Red Devils over the summer friendlies so far and, whilst Van Persie has yet to return to action after his summer exploits in Brazil 2014, the former pair approach the upcoming campaign in excellent form.

At 12.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Van Persie is the priciest option available to Fantasy managers despite scoring just 12 times in an injury-hit campaign under David Moyes last time around. Granted, with Van Gaal at the helm, we can surely expect an improvement but can he rediscover the form that served up 56 goals, 28 assists and 94 bonus points over 2011/12 and 2012/13?

With just a week to go until their season opener at home to Swansea, we ask the question – Can Robin Van Persie emerge as “essential” once again?

Evs says…
This may shock you all (being the proud owner of an RVP duvet) but I am going to say NO. He just doesn’t look as sharp as in previous seasons. Even in the World Cup, with the exception of the Spain game, he looked ordinary at best. Whereas beforehand he was in your team and there to stay, I think he will be better bought and sold as fixtures dictate. So bearing in mind he is unlikely to start the few first games of the season, then, he’s not essential for now. The only thing that may help swing it in Van Persie’s favour is a lack of European duties for United this season – while many rival strikers have busier schedules, he only has Premier League games to contend with. The duvet is in storage for now… But it may used again!

Applebonkers says…
Back in May 2010 a man called Darren in a Sunderland shirt took me to one side and said, “Son, look at me, I’ve scored 24 goals this season and played in all 38 matches. Yet I still haven’t reached the 200 point mark.” It was at this point that I learnt that it is not actually the more alluring goal which makes the true heavyweight striker, but the assist.

So I think this question could be as simple as will Van Persie start to pump out the assists again? We know he’ll score goals as not even David Moyes could unpolish that diamond, it’s all about the three point cousin. Fellow left-footer Juan Mata is a serious contender for right-sided set-pieces and that could dent van Persie’s potential to earn assists from the deadball.

The Dutchman’s number of passes and all-round involvement plummeted last season, this not only hurts his assist threat but hit him hard on bonus too. Rooney’s 46 passes per game compared to van Persie’s 18 (30 being the magic mark) meant the Dutchman struggled to compete with Rooney’s goals. Overall I’m sceptical whether van Gaal will help inject enough mojo back in to replicate the essential version of 2011 and 2012.

Tom Fenley says…
This is really down to Louis van Gaal, and unless we find out exactly how he’s going to set up the team it’s difficult to know. If it’s two up front then he’s likely to score about the same, or perhaps a little more than Rooney but not enough to warrant spending that extra two million. It’s always possible that van Persie will become essential, particularly if he starts playing up front on his own. It’s sensible to keep a way open of fitting him in with two transfers. However, overall, for that price and the money you save, unless Rooney really isn’t performing (and he does tend to have either very good or bad runs) it makes no sense to have van Persie, right now. Two million elsewhere in the squad provides much stronger value.

Jonty says…
I’m starting to think that we may have seen the best of Robin Van Persie during his sensational 531 point run over the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons. I can’t see him replicating that form again. Of course there are significant positives. He plays for Manchester United, he is on penalties and, when fit, should be nailed-on to start. He’s also still capable of scoring sensational goals as his header in Holland’s opening World Cup game showed. But with fitness concerns remaining I’m not sure this 31-year-old will be essential again. Crucially he is 2.0 more than Wayne Rooney, who with assists and goals in his locker, as well as a good pre-season under his belt, looks to offer similar or better returns for far less money. Van Persie also misses the opening fixture – if Rooney shines that day, then the Dutchman will struggle to gain our attention as he once did.

D1sable says…
I’m not so sure. We all know Van Persie’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) history and what he can potentially offer but sometimes past performances cloud our judgment; more recent times suggests he’s lost a little something and has started to succumb to injuries again, though I suppose the trick here is to work out if that was down to David Moyes and ascertain whether Van Gaal can reignite his compatriot’s thirst for goals. The comparison with Wayne Rooney also works against him for me –for an additional 2.0, you’re basically paying for penalties (when he’s on the pitch at the same time) and with Van Gaal already looking at playing a front two, I don’t think there is enough value there.

7shadesofsmoke says…
Was Robin van Persie (RvP) ever essential? The age-old argument goes that RvP is the Fantasy manager’s comfort blanket, the easy choice for captaincy if you want guaranteed returns, but in his most productive season (2011/12) his 269 points came at a rate of 12.38 minutes per point (MPP). He was slightly quicker again in 2012/13 but had fewer minutes, registering 262 points at a rate of 11.91 MPP – slower than Theo Walcott in the same season, let’s not forget.

Considering his eternally mighty price tag, I did present a case for a non RvP captaincy strategy before the start of last season and I’d adopt the same stance again this year. Will Van Persie be a major factor again? I really do think so. Luis van Gaal will need his main man back at his best if he is to make United a force to be reckoned with once more, but is RvP worth the extra 2.0 over his inevitable strike partner, Wayne Rooney? That’s far less clear.

If Robin van Comfort Blanket registered a point every 12.49 minutes over the past three years – in two of which he won the Premier League Golden Boot -Wayne Rooney offers up a similarly consistent point every 12.94 minutes for considerably less over the same period. It would take a season of Luis Suarez proportions for the Dutchman to be tagged ‘essential’ in my plans.

Swanny14 says…
As a Man United fan, please excuse any excessive bias here. But yes, I don’t believe that RVP’s ‘essential’ days are behind him. In an underperforming side and with a whopping 14.0 price tag hanging heavily around his neck last season, many of us naturally fell out of love with the Dutchman as our ‘affections’ turned towards Luis Suarez. But Old Trafford is a very different place now. With Louis van Gaal at the helm, a certain spark seems to have returned to the United side (just watch some of the football they’ve been playing in pre-season, the link-up play is miles ahead of anything we saw from them last year) and Van Persie is certain to benefit from his close relationship with his former international coach.

Sure the Dutchman wasn’t in the finest of form in 2013/14, but Van Persie still bagged 16 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions, and that’s with a midfield behind him that had about as much creativity as a sofa. If Van Gaal can get new signing Ander Herrera pulling the strings in the middle of the park, and figure out the ‘RVP, Rooney, Mata’ dilemma as David Moyes failed to do, then Van Persie – bar injuries – will have the platform to return to his title-winning heroics of 2012/13 and acquire his ‘essential’ status once again in the coming season.

Gavigon says…
I have a feeling that one of Robin Van Persie or Wayne Rooney will become essential. Which of them it is will come down to niggling injuries, and who Van Gaal decides is the attacking focal point – I’m favouring Rooney currently, but I don’t think it will be a clear picture until November or so.

Roscola says…
Those two explosive seasons were no fluke; we can’t doubt Van Persie’s credentials. Louis van Gaal knows and rates him, yet he failed to really ignite Van Persie at the World Cup and there are worrying signs that injuries are coming back to haunt the striker. From a Fantasy point of view, the 3-5-2 system negates any positional advantage he once had over Wayne Rooney and the extra money makes it look like the latter will always be a valid alternative to the Dutchman.

Mark Says…
My love affair with van Persie may well be at an end, but the soft spot I hold for him will doubtless have me considering acquisition at some point. Rooney’s form and the fact that Van Gaal is adamant on playing two central strikers does cast doubt over the potential on offer, however. For me, and doubtless many others, I need to see clear evidence that Van Persie is the stronger and more productive option over a consistent spell before I’d be willing to change the current thinking on the United strikers. Right now, Rooney has the edge and we’re hoping he can deliver value by keeping pace with this team-mate. Underestimating Van Persie is dangerous, however. He definitely has the ability to soar away from Rooney and the rest of the pack in the Golden Boot race, particularly if he can remain fit and the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Sergio Aguero suffer setbacks, fatigue and rotation. Events will need to align but that could happen. Evs and I could be snuggling under those RVP duvets by Christmas.

After seeing the united defence and palace articles written brilliantly I may as well write one out for chelsea.

Gk- obviously there has been much debate over courtois or Cech. They are both too high to invest in if you aren't sure they will play. Right?? However it is slowly b surely looking more likely that courtois will be the man between the posts next season. Rumours this week have been about ancelotti wanting Cech-who he worked with at chelsea before on his way to the double in his first year. Real Madrid signed Costa Rica keeper Keillor navas this week and he is a very good keeper however they have since sold diego Lopez to ac Milan which could suggest that ancelotti could want Cech to replace Lopez. I think it is currently a 'wait and see' but courtois looks more likely to start.

Def- Arguably the hardest position to summarise for chelsea. Cahill is our best defender. Fact. He is class and I can't see him being dropped unless we have a big champions league game a few days later and we are at home to some one like west brom. That leaves 3 places left. The other centre back is likely to be john terry for the majority of the games at the start of the season as mourinho knows exactly what he is going to get and has faith in him. Ivan or Zouma could fill in before a big champions league game but I think that it will be jt for most of the games. Lb- this will be f.luis near enough every game for me. José has spoken about how he wants a left footed lb to overlap and cross without checking back. F.luis does this and suits the mourinho way of being a good defender and not being caught up the pitch very often. Luis is only 6.0 but I honk he is a fairly safe bet to play. Which leaves one spot left. I think Ivan will fill this for most games leaving azpilicueta out. Ivan has been brilliant for us since joining and mourinho knows how important he is. He will play every game without fail agaisnt a physically big team as his aerial presence his scary. Azpilicueta will get game time obviously but I think he could be the one to make way most weeks. Obviously everyone will have their own opinions on this but that is mine.

Mid- Matic is nailed on to start every single game and could possibly be a decent differential. From what I have seen pre-season h has roamed forward a fair bit and has a gaol and an assist or two to his name. Alongse him in the pivot will be cesc I think. His passing range is fantastic and that suits this role where he can pick a 45 yard pass from deep in his own half up to hazard or costa to set us away in the counter. He will take most set pieces and we are generally quite a presence from these so expect a fair amount of assists to Ivan terry and Cahill etc. he is expensive at 9.0 however and I think hazard will be a far better option for 1.0 extra. Move onto hazard-the most nailed on player in the team(bar Matic and costa) hazard is a quality player. Everyone knows his and his skills and dribbling ability is fantastic although it was often out to waste last seaosn with no one clinical enough to take the hundreds of chances hazard put in a plate for em last season. Hazard will be even better this year and I wouldn't be surprised at all if hazard scored 230+ and was top scoring midfielder both fpl and real. He has a hefty price tag but he has scored close to-if not 30 goals in his last two seasons and must have about 25 assists in that time as well. This will only improve with the addition of costa to take some of the chances that hazard creates. Onto the right hand side of our midfield and I would expect to see schurrle there for most of the season. He has had a fantastic World Cup after having an iffy first season with us. He had limited chances to shine but always seemed to produce when givent he chance. If he plays he is the bargain of the seasons at 7.5 and will easily reach double figures in the goal department even if he only plays 25-30 games this season. He is a natural goal scorer with fantastic ability and if José doesn't give him a bigger role this time around I will be really disappointed. Lastly is the hole role. I fully expect it to be handed to willian as Jose loves him and his work rate but I can't stand the man so I'll write about the other option instead. Oscar could also fill this role. He played a key role at the start if last seaosn and produced, scoring a fair few goals in the process. If he plays the role I fully expect a lot more goals and assists from him as he will be playing around creative players to provide chances and clinical players to finish the chances he creates. What else could he ask for??

The other midfielder is Ramires. I'm not sure where he fits in really but he will play a lot of games. He works so hard for the team and José loves that. He could take over schurrle role on the right as he works harder but as I previously said I would be disappoit ed. If schurrle was to not get his chance this year. Ramires is really cheap so if he does begin to play the ram role then he would be a great differential and could bag you a few assists and the odd goal for only 5.5.

For- the only options really or drogba and costa as Torres is useless. Costa will play near enough every game providing he doesn't get injured or bp banned he will score 20-25 goals without fail as he has magicians behind him. As won't he defenders he may be rested ahead of big champions league games so if you are planning gt I wc the week after then drogba could be a oneweek wonder for you. He is proven and a legend at the club. You know when he plays their will be that presence. That person that can finish so he could get a few goals when he plays.

Hope this helps in some way. However big or small it may be.

Thanks for this. Personally I can see Luis missing out in GW1 as Mou sticks with the tried and tested defence of last season. The problem with Schurrle is his natural position is on the left, which is the same as Hazard's, but as a fellow Chelsea fan I'd love to see Schurrle get more opportunities from the start too.

Am in concurrence regarding the current thinking of RVPs prospects, but are we not missing a far better prospect in Ashley Young?

Young has been a fantasy staple for 5 years or so prior to last season, and had the goal/assist threat to fully justify a 9m price tag across the fantasy games. After securing a £15m+ move to Old Trafford and attracting high praise from Alex Ferguson he was supposed to kick on, and indeed did during his first season, scoring 123 is less than half a season of playing time (I think he got injured?), which would put him in the hazard/yaya/walcott bracket.

Over the past 2 years he has fallen from grace and will become a reverse OOP, but at 5.5 represents a much stronger prospect than Siggy in the early stages of the season.

He has to nail down that position though, his options otherwise are very slim. Positionally I wouldn't worry too much though, he'll play further up than a conventional LB would, and would have license to roam forward.

    A) 3-4-3 formation with Fabregas, Wayama, Jovetic and Giroud (or Bony)
    B) 3-5-2 formation with Fabregas, Eriksen, Jovetic and Naismith
    C) 3-5-2 formation with Eriksen, Henderson, Diego Costa and Bojan

I don't understand what I see some people saying about Liverpool's fixtures. I saw some say they will stay clear of them because of the fixtures but I'm watching their first ten fixtures and I don't see anything wrong. Can someone point out what I'm not apparently seeing 😯

People are looking at the first 3 fixtures. Saints then two tough games. Many are looking to get Liverpool cover in from GW4. Sound tactic I think however I believe Sterling's current form warrants immediate attention.

My other 6 will play more of a role in Gw2 and i'll probably drop Matic after Leicester. Am banking on the first three games being good for the big teams. I've got Jovetic, De Jong and BDavies too.

Finally got Evra to look up, give me a wave and a thumbs up after screaming his name for ages 😀 Shame, I didn't get a selfie/autograph, one of my mates got Pirlo's and Vidal's. The lucky astard.

    How's this defence looking.
    Speroni, Green
Wisdom, Pieters, Caulker, Bartley, Clyne/ Ward.

Would Ward over Clyne be too much CP?

I'm not keen on ManU defense, as a fan, I don't have any.

QPR should do a little better and Caulker has some goal threat in him, Southampton won't be hurt as much as people think, it depends on who else they lose before the deadline.

Do you have Ward or C. Davies? (5.0's)

All are nailed, take your pick with whatever fits your rotation/fancy more.

If you are planning on WC'ing early you could get Chambers at Arsenal.

                That's what I'm aiming for.

Not really sold on Chambers honestly, I probably will WC early on in the season, but he's just too risky for me. I thought I was settled on Evans, but I'm starting to think United's def is a no-go for the start, regardless of our fixtures.

Got to make the most of the Stoke def then I reckon. My best bet would be to bring Bego in as Foster's unlikely to keep his net still and then find a good rotation 5.0.

Cheers, you've been of great help!

No problem, I really don't think our defense is going to improve, I mean we still have the same defense as last year and LvG is very attack minded so it's bound to be shaky. If LvG brings in another quality DM and a couple of CB's I would be all over it.

Bego is a better option than the defenders in my opinion, at least he gets the save points

My defense is terrible, but I'm trying something different purely so I don't end up with a fully template team, it may come back to bite me in the backside but I'm sure I'll get over it with an early WC.

We did look uncomfortable in the pre-season, regardless of what numbers are saying. Hummels signing would bring Evans straight back into my team though.

Going with Bego for now. He rotates reasonably well with Krul as well.

Did you go for any def heavy hitters? I'm hoping to have a differential in Caulker in my ML. That's the reason I'm easily sold on him.

Yeah, like I said, if we do actually get some good signings then the defense will be a lot more appealing, as it stands, it doesn't look very solid.

Good thing about Bego and Krul, they are both good for saves, so even in the toughest fixtures you won't come out too badly.

Nope, my defense is like bargain basement line of 4.5's, I did the same a couple of years ago and got top 10k, so it isn't always bad. Last year I went for the template and didn't really pay much attention, came around 200k~

Ah past experiences. That's what draws me to the keeper rotation. Did wonders for me last season!

Don't worry much about the 4.5 back line. What's not to like about cheap defenders from solid teams. I rate them very highly and keep my cool when they eventually concede. Whereas if Cahill conceded and I played Henderson instead of Sterling for him, I'd be livid.

My main reason is just to try something different, if I don't do well then I don't do well, next season I will just be a lot more balanced.

                        Sanchez/Hazard/Mata/Siggy
                        Rooney/Costa/Dzeko

Having those at the front makes me feel a lot safer than the defenders would. Even considered bringing in Henderson for Siggy, depends what happens with Bony.

A lot of things depend on Bony, that's right!

That's a banging front 7. Not so sure about having a cheap 5th mid, but I guess you can't really change that. I', trying to make my team even more top heavy without cutting corners, but I always have to pick an unreliable 3rd striker which infuriates me.

I know what you mean, I wanted to give Fletcher a look, at 5.5 I think he could do well providing that he's fit and playing, but there's Austin and Bojan to look at too.

I've been considering getting Austin and gambling on Rodwell in the middle. Then upgrading a couple of def's to 5's.

I'm finding it really hard to look past Davis as the cheap mid right now. He was the highest scoring 5m midfielder from last season where he had a lot more competition for starts.

Is he a guaranteed starter at the moment or am I jumping the gun?

He's a very good option in my opinion, I think he will be nailed, but whether he will replicate last season with the dismantled team is another story.

I've also considered Rodwell, I just don't know if he's nailed.

He's already in my side. I was going to rotate a few 6m players as my cheapest attackers. However Davis caught my eye as a very viable budget option. For 5m I think he's worth the risk as a Southampton player.

No I was looking at Arnotovic/Snoddy and Siggy. Or something like that. The idea was to downgrade my worst attacker to the biggest budget bandwagon early doors. Still a good tactic I think but I can still achieve that with Davis at 5m I think.

My fourth middie is 6.0 or less. Right now I have Henderson. Is a drop to 5.5 for Mutch or Sidwell worth having an extra .5 to work with?

No I think they are all crap. The closest will be Wisdom but he will only be nailed early on. I don't fancy WBA defence too much (although its probably better than Villa's

FPL have stung us this year - no semi-decent 4m defenders, no 4.5m mids worth having and no clear favourites in the cheap striker sweepstakes.

There are going to some massive budget bandwagons in the opening weeks. Jumping on the right ones will be a sure way to gain TV.

Mata and Hazard. Not convinced by Tadic, Mata has easy fixtures, Hazard never lets me down.

I have Hazard in my team and Rooney/Austin are my other strikers. He's the player I'm worried most about leaving out and after him is Raheem Sterling. Do you think he's essential.

First option, purely because I don't know if Azpi will play...I hate the Chelsea FB situation at the moment.

      you're short .5 for Cahill-Costa

Luis is gonna play over Azp so a)

I think Cahill is the safest option for Chelsea and after him is Azpilicueta. Filipe Luis won't start the first game IMO and when does play Ivanovic will be dropped for Azpili.

Lol. Luis is the only nailed-on Chelsea defender. He will start the first match and every match thereafter if fit.
