Pre-Season

Sleeper – Juan Mata

Our series of “Sleeper” articles, focussing on players who failed to live up to our expectations in the previous season, got underway with a look at Theo Walcott’s prospects earlier this summer. Next up, we turn our attentions to Juan Mata, who, in his first two seasons with Chelsea in the top-flight, cemented his place as one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League. Serving up 162 points in his debut campaign in 2011/12, the Spaniard stepped up another level the following year and, after a slow start, eclipsed Eden Hazard as the top scoring Blues midfielder by 212 points to 190:

The arrival of Jose Mourinho last summer changed all that, though. With the Blues boss opting for Oscar behind a lone striker, Mata struggled to make any impact from out on the right – starting 11 of Chelsea’s opening 22 league matches and emerging from the bench on a couple of occasions, he mustered a mere two assists, with his new manager somewhat critical of the playmaker’s work-rate.

From creative lynchpin to peripheral figure, Mata was offloaded by Mourinho in last winter’s transfer window as former United boss David Moyes turned to the Spaniard with arguably his last throw of the dice.

Whilst the new boy’s displays weren’t enough to save the Scot from the axe, they were, nonetheless, quick to capture our Fantasy attention. With his confidence restored from a consistency of starts, the record signing served up six goals, five assists and 15 bonus points in just 15 appearances to sign off the 2013/14 as one of the most in-form midfielders around.

The Prospects

Further analysis of Mata’s United stats bode well for the season ahead. From the point of his arrival in Gameweek 23, only two midfielders – Yaya Toure and Steven Gerrard – scored more often. Toure notched nine times, with four spot-kicks boosting his tally, whilst six of Gerrard’s eight strikes over the period were also as a result of converted penalties. In terms of goals from open play, then, Mata was joint-top with Raheem Sterling amongst midfielders during that period.

The arrival of Louis van Gaal has enhanced the Spaniard’s Fantasy prospects over the summer. With United now lining up in a 3-4-1-2 formation, Mata has been handed his preferred role in “the hole” behind a front two and has scored twice during his side’s unbeaten US tour.

Mata’s arrival at Old Trafford looks to have finally afforded Fantasy managers a viable option in the United midfield. For two or three seasons now, the men in the middle have failed to make their mark and we’ve been forced to turn our attentions to Wayne Rooney or Robin Van Persie as the likeliest source of attacking returns but the little Spaniard’s Premier League record underlines that, if assured of a starting role, he will deliver – his 2012/13 tally of 212 points is still superior to Hazard’s high of 202, recorded last season. In spite of that, Mata comes in at 9.0 to the Belgian’s 10.0, suggesting he could be undervalued by FPL this time around.

The opening schedule is beneficial, too. United have been afforded the chance to quickly hit the ground running – showdowns with Swansea, Sunderland, Burnley, QPR, Leicester, West Ham, Everton and West Brom in the first eight Gameweeks could barely be more favourable and with Robin van Persie yet to feature in pre-season, Mata looks a strong double-up option alongside Wayne Rooney for those willing to splash the cash on the Red Devils from the outset.

    As an Arsenal fan I have been pleasantly suprised by our action in the transfer window and lack of injuries (touch wood). However I cannot help but feel that this strength in depth dampens the fantasy appeal of our attackers. There are about 17 or 18 players at Wengers disposal that fit into only 6 spots;

Chambers - can be utilised at a CDM
Arteta - club captain so will get game time
Flamini - Wengers big game player
Rosicky - just signed a extension contract
    Ramsey - nuff said
Wilshere - Wengers love child. Claimed it would be break out season
    Cazorla - Spain international
    Oxlade - young and English
    Podolski - world cup winner
Sanchez - spent 35 million on
    Walcott - pacey and different
Ozil - spent 40 million on
    Sanogo - impressive pre season
Giroud - only out and out centre forward with experience
    Diaby - Yaya Toure v.II
Campbell - promised game time by Wenger
Gnabry - impressed last year in the PL
Zelalem - dubbed "future cesc Fabregas"
Monreal/Bellerin/Coquelin - all have played in midfield

With either one of Chambers/Flamini/Arteta likely to fill the deep lying midfielder role and one of Sanchez/Giroud/Sanogo to play up top it leaves the others to fight it out for the other 4 spaces. I believe that Wenger is likely to rotate the others in order to keep his players happy and injury free. Therefore I have steered clear of the Arsenal attack as I believe they are all susceptible to rotation (even Ramsey, he was rested vs Norwich last season when the squad was very thin(admittedly he came on after 15mins cos Flamini got injured)). Although Arsene has his best XI which he is likely to play vs the big teams, I think many will be rested vs the smaller teams this season, thus reducing their fantasy appeal. Wenger also insisted that the new signings would not affect the British players development so I expect plenty of gametime for the likes of Oxlade, Wilshere, Wally

If you insist however on having an Arsenal attacker I think Ramsey will start the strongest due to early absentees. I also predict that Wilshere will have a high scoring season after he claims he has been working on getting forward and scoring more goals. This is just my opinion and I may be wrong, feel free to argue.

    Wanna get more thoughts.

    Anyone considering Debuchy?

Looks a decent option at 5.5m. Looked very attacking in the game against City, put in quite a few crosses. Sanchez drifting centrally from the right, leaves a lot of space on the right for Debuchy as well. Arsenal also looking pretty solid at the back, and can only get better when Mertesacker and Koscielny return. He's in my side ATM.

Sticking with Evans or any new defender priced under 6.0M United sign,

Rumors suggest United have placed a bid for Rojo so that's one to keep an eye on.

A first full pre season in 4..

Played really well in the Comm Shield- 6.5m in a team that is sure to be banging in the goals.

What does everyone think of the likelihood of Vertongen starting on Sat?

And less of a concern but Anichebe?! Considering him as a cheap 3rd striker (weakest mid is Siggy so won't play much but maybe 1st week)

Thoughts on this would be appreciated...

      A) YYT & Austin (current)
      or
      B) Hazard & 7m STR / 5.5 MID (would replace Albrighton)

My concern with not having YYT is that if he starts well it's hard to bring him in, but easier to downgrade to Fab/Sanchez/Haz if he doesn't... I already have Mata, Rambo, Siggy, Rooney and Dzeko...

On the head to head leagues, there's an option for knockout rounds... how are these players chosen? Are they the top 8 players based on the points for wins/draws then put into a knockout for the last 3 GWs?

DO NOT pick these options if you have 20 players. Only if you have 18 or 16.
