Scout Notes – Gameweek 1 – Monday

Cesc Fabregas grabs a pair of assists as Chelsea overcome Burnley 3-1 at Turf Moor. Diego Costa nets on his league debut, while Branislav Ivanovic and Andre Schurrle are also amongst the goals as the Blues get off to an impressive start.

Chelsea New Boys Dazzle in Burnley Destruction
Positioned in the Blues double-pivot alongside Nemanja Matic, Cesc Fabregas showed that, despite a deep-lying role, he looks poised to play a major part in our Fantasy seasons. The Spaniard pulled the strings for Jose Mourinho’s side in an outstanding first-half display that harvested a pair of assists and the maximum bonus points as he overshadowed the pricier Eden Hazard in the Chelsea midfield.

Up front, Diego Costa continued the momentum that saw him score four times over the summer friendlies. Drafted in by 37% of FPL managers prior to the weekend, the former Atletico Madrid man was second only to Wayne Rooney in last week’s Captain Poll and his predatory instincts will surely persuade more to invest as Mourinho’s men welcome Leicester, Swansea and Villa to the Bridge in the next five.

Schurrle Stakes a Claim
The German’s excellent strike also brings him onto radars as a potential mid-price option. Coming in at just 7.5, Schurrle scored eight times in just over 1400 minutes last season, with an average of 176.4 minutes per goal quicker than any Chelsea player – currently sitting in just 6% of FPL sides, he looks a real prospect if he can retain the role on the right of the attacking midfield three.

Luis and Cech Warm the Blues Bench
Mourinho started last season’s back-four for the Burnley clash as new signing Filipe Luis was named amongst the substitutes, with Cesar Azpilicueta and Branislav Ivanovic fielded as full-backs. Clearly, though, the new boy won’t be expected to sit on the bench every week and it may not be for a number of matches before we get a clear idea of Mourinho’s intentions – there seems little conclusions can be made on last night’s team sheet. Thibaut Courtois got the nod ahead of Petr Cech for the number one jersey, though before the match, the Blues boss added further uncertainty to the situation by stating:

“Thibaut is my number one tonight against Burnley. I don’t make decisions for the season; I make decisions for a match.”

Arfield’s Budget Appeal
The Clarets man was one of only three budget midfielders to get amongst the goals this week, along with Ki Sung-Yeung and Lee Cattermole. Having netted eight times in last year’s Championship, Arfield carries the main scoring threat in the centre of the park in Sean Dyche’s side and, after proving his capabilities against a side that chalked up 18 clean sheets last season, could come into contention as a cheap fifth midfield option.

Would you -4 to go mata to Fab? My first transfer was young to Siggy...

    Bego Myhill
    Cahill Debuchy Chester Hutton Moore
    Ramsay Siggy Mata Steling Albrighton
    Rooney Costa Dzeko

The main reasoning is to keep up with price rises; If I don't do the -4 now and Fab (or another 8,5+) becomes essential, I will have to downgrade elsewhere.

Im considering the same myself. Did Young to Siggy and wonder if it is a smart move or knee jerk to do Mata to Cesc for -4...Man Utd. is possibly in a state of chaos, and Chelsea looks like the will walk the PL this season. What to do?

If prices were staying put I would stick but being on the wrong end of a 0.4 difference in week one will be more painful than a -4. It's also possible that cesc gets us back the 4 points this week with the favourable fixture

I posted this in the DZ. Since then Fabregas is set to rise tonight

Here is my take on the Mata to Fabregas debate.

Last night I was planning to stay patient with Mata as he has the easiest run of fixtures all season coming up but I'm swaying towards making the change and here's why.

Fabregas will rise by 0.1m and Mata will fall by 0.1m definitely by Wednesday/Thursday night. We can expect another rise/fall on either Friday or Saturday (from transfers before the deadline), remember United play on Sunday so no way that Mata will be bought back on Saturday whereas Fabregas plays on Saturday and could rise even more. This means at the start of GW2 Mata will be 8.8m and Fabregas 9.2m definitely. So lets asses what could happen

    1. Fabregas has another good game on Saturday after rising on Friday/Saturday. He will definitely rise again on Saturday/Sunday. If Fabregas rises on Friday he will also rise on Saturday in this instance before you even get to see Mata play. That will make Mata 8.8m and Fabregas 9.3m on Saturday night.

    2. They both have a quiet game. Expect Fabregas to either remain the same or possibly rise. Expect Mata to fall as the punters feel knee-jerky, especially after seeing the gap on price which will be minimum 0.4m. Remember how many people look at Total Points, they will see Fabregas about 10 points ahead of Mata

    3. They both have a good game. Expect both to rise but Fabregas more so as he will have a much higher Total Points, this is key to transfers

    4. Mata does better than Fabregas. This can only happen on Sunday by which time the price difference will definitely be at least a 0.4m shift.

In the first 3 instances, it's obviously better to go for Fabregas. Even the 4th instance isn't too bad as you will have 9.1m to sell Fabregas and be able to buy Mata at 8.8m if you really want to.

Option 4 is the worst case scenario (bar injury/sending off) if you make the switch, at most a -4 hit and banking 0.3m. But think of the reverse, what if Fabregas has a blinder on Saturday, he will be 9.3m overnight whilst you're still waiting for Mata to play. That's 0.5m already, meaning that if you have 0 in the bank it will cost you 2 transfers to switch Mata to another 9m option and you've just lost out on valuable TV.

On top of this, United aren't going to transform in one week from the rubbish performance against Swansea, whereas Chelsea are full of confidence against possibly the easiest game of the season.

This is football and anything can happen but you need to look at the percentages and for me it seems like a no brainer making the switch. Worst comes to worse and Mata will score a mximum of 15 points more than fabregas (highly unlikely) and you will have just made 0.3m and maybe a -4 hit if you decide to buy Mata back. For me, that is worth the risk

It's not for me. Where's the guarantee that Chelsea will consistently play at this level? I didn't pick Mata because of the first GW. I picked him with the plan to keep him in the entire season. If after GW5 he still hasn't produced, I'll look at other options.

Totally agree. I think it also depends if you have other Chelsea players or not. If you want to get one in for the Leicester game then I guess it could be your best option. But Mata remains a very decent attacking player with great fixtures. Players have good weeks and bad, fantasy wise.

    Ramsey Eriksen Siggy TADIC(Hendo) MARNEY(JWP)
    Rooney Sturridge Costa

Or do i need to panic and reassess and Swap Sturridge for a midprice forward and get a premium mid for TADIC(Hendo). very difficult to ignore Sterling/Fabs etc

Agreed. So long as the rest of your team is fit and doing well. Fab has Lei at home and Man U Sunderland away. Chelsea and Fabs on form and Man U and Mata are not sparking yet. If that changes then you get to sell at a high and buy at a low. Perfect logic.
