The ScoutCast – Episode 134 – Starter

Gently does it. Granville and I ease ourselves into the season with another thirty-minute bite-size podcast, gradually building up our fitness before we go full tilt next month.

Yes, it’s just the pair of us again, cuddling up in our intimate studio to discuss the events of Gameweek one, whilst casting one eye on the fixtures and events to come this weekend.

We get through the usual array of regulars, with Granville explaining how a wedding and a bout of childcare threatened to ruin his campaign, just as it gets out of the blocks. We reach out to all those Siggy benchers, whilst picking the bones out United’s limp corpse following their opening day defeat. We then chat Fabregas vs Hazard, Ivanovic vs the rest (they’re going to run and run) and sing Ultimate’s praises for helping the previously unloved play their part in our Fantasy seasons.

Pick at the buffet via this link, or dash straight to the main course via the handy player below….

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

It hasn't been easy but have made it through the week without using my transfer.. Am just off to Reading Festival so not gonna bring my phone.. Am I good to save my transfer and lock this team in for the weekend?

    Krul
    Terry - Chester - Kolarov
    Hazard (c) - Mata - Sanchez - Siggy
    Austin - Rooney - Dzeko

    Foster - Naylor - Wanyama - Chambers

      Jealous on the Reading Festival!
Nalyor is the only dilemma for me. Guess its Austin vs him and think you have the right choice.

Sarj made me think. I have modified his recipe. I find this one works better and what's nice is it's not just limited to breakfast. It makes for a great treat on a Saturday afternoon just before kick off.

4 eggs, b̶i̶t̶ lots of m̶i̶l̶k̶,̶ ̶ beer, salt, pepper, oregano. Mix it up, pour it in. Sprinkle LOADS of m̶o̶z̶z̶a̶r̶e̶l̶l̶a̶ beer on it, and hey presto, the best thing ever!!!

Sprinkle the cheese on top as soon as you pour in the mixture, so it melts!

    Enjoy!

Right, I'm going sleep in a sec, but later on I'm going to do a bit of research into some teams. When looking into past seasons, how far would you recommend to go back? 5 seasons? 3 seasons?

Obviously a lot can change in that time, manager / players / tactics etc.

I have a question and was waiting for DZ to ask as more experienced fpl players are on at this time.
What is it that the newbies and semi-casuals like me do different to the expert and experienced fpl players.
I jump on bandwagons who have good fixtures ahead and I'm not afrid to take a hit if price changes force my hand.
Sometimes I get players who I like if they have good fixtures disregarding their form.
I follow the advice given on this site by the experts and fellow semi-casuals like me.
Knee-jerks is what I manage to avoid most of the time amd try to stick to my picks.
I follow pre-season and watch games or highlights of games that I missed to scout players.

But still there is something which keeps players like me behind the big fish. Everyone was a newbie once so If someone could share their opinion i would really appreciate it 🙂

Captain choices are vital. Dont over think these, normally your first idea is the best and then you talk yourself out of it with over thinking and crazy ideas.

I also think keeping your team value up is important, includes getting on rises and more importantly avoiding falls. If your team is worth 102m around xmas so many more choices available to you. Others play it different but i dont mind a few early hits to stop players who are dropping or getting on some rises, obviously with judgment. Look at Siggy vs Dier for example.

I actually think it's not about following bandwagons at all. It's about picking the players that you think will score the most points in the upcoming weeks. The price rises follow and more importantly the points follow. Similarly it's being brave enough to keep a player who is due to drop in price but you think will score well. Points are the name of the game and price rises follow points. You only get so far by following bandwagons. The top players spot them before they're bandwagons.

Normally would agree with all of that but this season with increased thresholds for rises avoiding price drops is going to be even more important than usual. We wont be getting the .2 rises per week as often.

Luck plays a huge part but over the season the more experienced players always manage to get more lucky than the rest. Has to be something more than luck.
Last season I had a team value of around 112 m by the end still wasn't able to get into the top 10k.
Has to be the captain choices I think. I made a lot of risky captain picks

what's the dz opinion on jovetic replacement? gonna wait until next gw to assess a few more players but thoughts so far are

    - remy (worried he might go elsewhere)
    - gomis or bony (already have siggy so doubling up at swans seems overkill)
    - Naismith (go 2 up top and use the extra 3mil to get in rvp/sturridge and improve midfield)
or any other suggestions someone on here may have?

I went with the holy trinity at the start because it's easy to upgrade to Aguero or RvP when they are firing. It's really hard to pick a mid-priced striker this year. Once Lukaku is fit and has good fixtures I'd go with him.

I've had my fingers burned by aguero before so for me it would be a choice between sturridge and rvp but I see your point. if I put Naismith in I can upgrade albrighton to lamela/eriksen so wouldn't be too upset but then would struggle to get one of the big forwards in, just got to hope the midfielders shine! dilemma!!!

I've got a similar dilemma (re jovetic) and have likewise decided to save the transfer. I'm monitoring remy, but I'm also looking towards rivière as a potential replacement. On the other hand, I could use my 2 transfers to downgrade an injured mid (should such a catastrophe occur) and upgrade jovetic in the coming weeks to somebody like a balotelli. All theoretical of course.

I think first and foremost that you have done the logical thing in saving the transfer.

Chelsea at home playing well against a promoted side. Costa on form.

United away not playing well against a leaky but okay team. Rooney on form.

yes, we've only had 1 gw we don't really know anything about anyone at the moment. for example rvp may come back and start firing them in, or you may need to get costa in. in those two scenarios you'll need your WC to restructure your team

Quick question, for anybody with memories better than mine.

I'm commissioner for a 20-team minileague and am arranging a fixture list for our parallel H2H League and knockout League Cup. I do fairly extensive write-ups for my own pleasure and (hopefully) for the entertainment of those in our league. I'm not just setting up another private league and doing it as a H2H on the site, because I want to control the schedule more than the site would allow. In the interest of managing my time and allowing me enough time to do the write-ups justice, I am avoiding including the holiday fixture madness in my schedule and am avoiding the mid-week dates as well. I'm giving owners a few weeks at the start of the season to get set for it and I want to avoid wrapping the whole thing up on GW38, with its mixture of unmotivated squads and players held out because of mystery injuries.

I'd like to have the final end up on one of the DGWs that typically pile up at the end of the season, but don't really know if we've historically ended up with more of those on GW35, 36, or 37? Anybody have opinions on this or have the ability to read the tea-leaves of the schedules with greater skill than I can muster?

    Any thoughts appreciated.

You should see what I do for the FPL Cup...
Through a minimal-medium amount of work, you can usually identify who the specific person who owns the random team you get matched up against. It's a ton more fun and personal to know that your Cup Week 1 opponent is a history teacher in some school in Newcastle, or the goalkeeper for the University of Houston women's soccer team, or, as was the case two years ago, Ange Postecoglou, who is now the head coach of the Australian Men's National Team.

Agree normally but I had 24hrs with it so I did repost a few times and as I'm know a tad on these parts guys seem to be quite happy to up vote me.
I had over 20 votes in the end next best was around 4 and a good few 1s.
I'd guess maybe 32+ votes and hoping guys would find that Hot Topic was ambitious to say the least.
It's gonna be a great feature but needs to rolled out differant if I didn't campaign (not spam) I too would have been lucky to get 3/4 votes,
I know you ain't critical but if I didn't campaign people wouldn't even have know it was on, I actually promoted the challenge for Mark and co.

Not the scout picks as such, but the concept of the community champion. Not a dig at you at all, but you were chosen as you were first, simple as that. What's the point of voting on a team that will completely change?

I used my transfer this week bring in Siggy (who I had for weeks only for the stupid QPR fan in me to spring forth and bring in Mutch an hour before deadline last weekend!).

Am worried that I might lose value on Jovetic if I retain him rather than pay pts but frankly based on the stats am worried that I'd do so just before he repaid the faith I had in him pre-season so I get hit with the double whammy of selling early and paying pts for the privilege.

Besides, who else is there for £8.0 that isn't punty? Pelle is of interest but until he finds the net I'm holding off on that one. Remy? Hmmmmm
