Scout Notes – Gameweek 2 – Monday

Stevan Jovetic bags a brace as City ease past Liverpool 3-1. Sergio Aguero emerges from the bench to score once again, with a Pablo Zabaleta own goal denying the hosts a second clean sheet of the season.

Jovetic at the Double
The City striker proved a deadly differential in last night’s encounter with Liverpool by bagging a brace in the 3-1 win. Sold by over 24,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers last week, Jovetic sat in less than 5% of Fantasy teams as the Reds rolled up to the Etihad but, handed a start alongside Edin Dzeko once again, he rediscovered the form that saw him net five times in pre-season and delivered a 13-point return for his owners.

Now down to 7.9 in FPL, Jovetic seems in the driving seat to retain a starting berth at home to Stoke next weekend and arguably has the platform to edge ahead of Dzeko in the pecking order. The latter was forced off with a leg problem midway through the second period, though Manuel Pellegrini was optimistic of his chances after the match:

“Edin had a kick that gave him some trouble with his leg but I don’t think it is anything important. We will see tomorrow but I think he will be okay.”

Quick-Fire Aguero Nets Again
Once again, the Argentine demonstrated that he needs little time to make an impact for City. Having netted just seven minutes into his substitute appearance at Newcastle last week, Aguero scored 23 seconds after climbing off the bench to breach the Liverpool backline and bring him onto Fantasy radars ahead of the home clash against Stoke. Granted, Manuel Pellegrini’s team sheets underline he’s clearly determined to protect Aguero as he returns to match sharpness, but if Dzeko fails to recover, the little Argentine could be let loose against the Potters.

Kolarov the fall-guy
Despite putting in a strong attacking display in the clean sheet at Newcastle, it was Aleks Kolarov who was sacrificed for Pablo Zabaleta’s return to the starting XI. Gael Clichy switched to his preferred left-back role, leaving Kolarov on the bench as an unused sub. With Bacary Sagna also now an option for Pellegrini, the full-back situation is looking complex and difficult to read. Secure investment in the City back four looks limited to Joe Hart and Vincent Kompany once again, then.

Reds Unconvincing in Etihad Loss
A late own goal by Pablo Zabaleta was all the Reds had to show for last night’s display. Coming off the back of a narrow home win over Southampton, there are signs that Liverpool may take some time to adjust to life without Luis Suarez. The late introduction of Rickie Lambert suggests the former Southampton man will be no more than Brendan Rodgers’ “Plan B” in the latter part of matches, though Raheem Sterling owners will be a little concerned that the youngster’s minutes were curtailed to allow Lambert pitch time.

In defence, Rodgers has concerns over full-backs Glen Johnson and Albert Moreno who picked up injuries. The former was forced out of the action due to a thigh problem, whilst the Spaniard picked up a sprained ankle on his debut. With a trip to Spurs up next, the Reds defence looks unlikely to chalk up their first shut-out of the season in light of last night’s display, though the schedule does improve significantly from Gameweek 4 onwards.

    What to do with Remy. Hold in the chance he plays, scores and moves to Arsenal or shift for Ade or Jovetic

      • 10 Years
      9 years, 9 months ago

      I'm not sure moving to Arsenal is a great thing for him. Alexis would likely be given a run of games up front to impress, with Remy initially as back up. 😕

      If he was nailed on though, he'd be great.

    My team ATM

    1 FT
    1,5 mil in the bank

    Krul elliot
    Clyne chester hutton wisdom ferdinand
    Haz Fab Ramsey Siggy Sterling
    Costa Rooney Wood

    Itching to jump on Jovetic or Aguero considering Stokes crap defense. Arsenals defense doesnt look all to solid atm either. Feeling a little overexposed to chelsea as well and I would like a nice spread between all the top teams eventually.

    Pick one:

    A) Do nothing -> 2 FT
    B) Fab->Mata
    C) Fab->Mata Roo->Aguero -4 hit
    D) Fab->4,5 Wood->Jove -4 hit
    E) Roo->Aguero/jovetic

    I guess A or B is the sensible option, but transfers are so much fun 🙂

    Utd are not going to pay £60m for a wing back. I'm just saying. Mata is getting bombed.

      Honestly, United can pay whatever they want for any position. We will probably see a change in formation to a 442 diamond imo, Di Maria one of the CMs

        more likely a 4-3-3 with Mata at the tip of the diamond and Rooney/Di Maria out wide. Only way to get them all in.

        don't have the centre backs to play 3 at the back anyway. No idea why he's persisted with it.

          Actually, what I posted fits them all in far better.

          Fletcher/Fellaini
          Di Maria Herrera
          Mata
          Rooney RVP

        He might play 4-3-1-2 with Di Maria and Valencia at the wings and Herrera in center and Mata in the middle behind 2 strikers

        I still believe it was at the start of the season, as it gave me a solid foundation and a good team value. I can now assess the better options and choose for example between Jovetic and Dzeko which is always easier in hindsight 🙂

      I'm holding this week. I think I'd rather have 2ft going in to the intl break

    Man City's next 3 fixtures, and the corresponding results last season:

    Man City 1-0 Stoke

    Arsenal 1-1 Man City

    Man City 0-1 Chelsea

      aguero's a big game scorer, but I do think the love is coming a bit early.

          Agreed, but Arsenal away and Chelsea at home were probably the two hardest fixtures last season. Arsenal great for a home CS, Chelsea great for an away CS in the big games.

          Granted, neither look as defensively strong this season, but I'm not ripping my team apart just yet. 😛

            See it's a lot easier when it just means sacrificing one striker in Costa and then a 5.0 defender becomes Dummett and its only -4...

            It's tempting, but I'm holding off and being patient because people on here made me see sense 😛

              sense? here? 😛

              I could do Costa -> Aguero too.... I just don't want to.... yet. 😉

        I agree.

        It's a marathon, not a sprint, and I'd back Rooney to outscore Sergio "I'm made of glass" Aguero over the next 3 games, with United playing:

        Burnely (A)
        QPR (H)
        Leicester (A)

      therefore the exact same results will occur again!

    United's midfield could look similar to Barca's of a few years ago if they get that ever-elusive CDM.

    Mata - Xavi

    Di Maria - Iniesta

    Khedira - Busquets

      • 10 Years
      9 years, 9 months ago

      for a minute there, I thought you were suggesting United were getting Xavi/Iniesta! 😆

      Don't see Khedira leaving. Ancelotti's said he's staying. Alex Song maybe? 😛

        Alex Song then 😀 Not sure why he hasn't been bought yet, he'll be dirt cheap and he can definitely do a job in that position better than half the CDMs in the prem at the moment..

          Yep, I rate him. He built a strong partnership with RVP too. Question marks about his attitude/wages apparently. If I was a United fan, I'd be happy with Nigel de Jong, just so you have someone!

          Okay, but even then the players play in such different ways I cant see it as being comparable. You might as well just stick 3 random players together.

          Khedira isnt a CDM, and isnt as good on the ball as Busquets, Mata cant control a game and Di Maria lacks creativity.

          I think a bit of Madrid bias shines through.. 😉

            Khedira could be Song or any CDM, just not Darren Fletcher 😛 Khedira probably wouldn't work in the Busquets position, you're right, he was just an example, albeit a poor one 🙂

            Carrick controls the game more than Mata but I'd still throw Mata in there as the most advanced of the 3 as he offers so much more than Carrick (who I really don't rate that high), nobody in the world with the exception of Pirlo can match Xavi for control over a game from midfield, but Mata could control the attacking aspect of the midfield anyway..

            Di Maria not creative?? 😯 😯 I disagree with you on that one mate 😉

    De gea (Myhil)
    Cahil N.taylor PVA Duff Hutton
    Ramsey Eriksen Fabregas Marney Siggy
    Rooney Costa Dzeko

    1m in bank and 2FT?

    Krul / foster

    Debuchy. Jones. Hutton. Wisdom. Bruce

    Mata. Hazard. Ramsey. Siggy. El Ahmadi

    Rooney. Costa. Jovetic

    Got 1 ft would anyone change anything. I have £0.5m which I was going to upgrade jovetic to dzecko but I'm reluctant now 🙂

    I don't know why I have El Ahmadi, who should I have instead just incase I need my 5th mid, would like to stick to the same price

    Or do I get rid of Jones and spend the 6m, I want Chelsea defence cover but who.

    Thanks.

      You have a very similar team to mine, my current plan is to change Dzeko to Ade this week, then downgrade Jones next week to free up funds for Rooney to Aguero after ManU's good fixtures and Citys bad fixtures. Only other way is a wildcard for me.

      Was thinking about selling but keeping now Giroud is out. Wenger's team selection vs Everton clearly shows he sees Sanchez as an option up front. Just because it didn't work in the first 45 mins doesn't mean he won't try it again vs Leicester.

    What does the Giroud news mean for Arsenal's formation?
    Sanchez pushing forward more?
    More game time for Cazorla, the Ox, Wilshere?

        I'm rapidly going off picking Arsenal players. They were a bit lucky to scrape a draw at the weekend.
        It will be interesting to see how they line up tomorrow in a must-win game.

      Short term it means Sanchez up top and Ozil wide. Long term, it's impossible to know. Sanchez will have to adapt quickly to keep starting up top.
