This Much We Know – Gameweek 7

Our Monday lunchtime look at the Gameweek gone by has plenty of topics to consider. Tactical switches from Hull and Leicester, Tottenham and West Ham’s defences, the pitch time of City’s strikers and Villa’s returning Belgian are all on this afternoon’s menu.

Cisse may just keep Pardew in a job…
Four goals in just 151 minutes’ action underlines the importance of Papiss Cisse to the Newcastle cause. In his first start of the season, the Senegal striker grabbed a second double in three appearances to help snatch a draw at Swansea and appease the away support – bearing in mind the Magpies have only scored seven times, Cisse’s return to action looks vital to not only his side’s prospects but his manager’s chances of remaining in the hot seat. Alan Pardew dropped new boys Emmanuel Riviere and Remy Cabella to the bench at the Liberty and sculpted his attack around Cisse – at 5.9, he may yet arrive back on our radars if he can steer clear of the treatment room.

Aguero’s pitch time is becoming increasingly assured…
Despite played 86 minutes against Roma in midweek, the Argentine lasted from start to finish against Villa on Saturday. Edin Dzeko, by comparison, was subbed off around the hour mark in both matches, whilst fit-again Stevan Jovetic was afforded no more than a six-minute cameo against the Italians last Wednesday. Finally up to full fitness, Aguero looks to be providing a new level of assurance ahead of a strong run of fixtures, with Manuel Pellegrini keen to allow him as much time on the pitch as possible right now – as evidenced by his 88th minute strike at Villa Park.

Bruce is looking to tighten up…
A return to 3-5-2 steadied the ship as Hull registered a first win and first clean sheet since the opening day of the season. Steve Bruce’s side had leaked 10 goals in the four matches prior to Saturday’s win over Palace but it was somewhat telling that, with a very tricky schedule to follow, The Tigers boss was keen to instill a little more resilience to his brittle backline. Hull now face Arsenal, Liverpool, Southampton, Spurs, United and Everton in six of their next seven matches – a run of fixtures that surely no Fantasy manager will be willing to back – but it’s clear that if they are to prevail, Bruce needs to permanently ditch that four-man backline.

Wisdom’s place may be under threat…
Unavailable for the trip to parent club Liverpool, the Baggies loanee will be hoping he can reclaim his starting berth next time around. Despite the 2-1 loss at Anfield, though, Alan Irvine was full of praise for Cristian Gamboa’s performance at right-back after the Costa Rican was finally handed a first league start since arriving in the summer. Owned by almost 12% of FPL managers, Wisdom has quickly become the cut-price fifth defender of choice but his minutes may well be diminished if Irvine affords the impressive Gamboa another place in his XI.

Poyet could have found his formula…
Prior to the weekend win over Stoke, the Black Cats boss discussed the need to find a winning combination after his side failed to triumph in the first six rounds of fixtures. Adam Johnson and Jack Rodwell were the man to make way as Connor Wickham shifted to the flank in order to accommodate Steven Fletcher as the lone striker – the latter pair grabbed three goals between them to finally get the Wearsiders’ season up and running. If Poyet can keep both players fit and firing, they looks essential to his side’s prospects of survival.

Schlupp benefits from Pearson’s reshuffle…
A switch to 4-4-2 afforded the Leicester defender the chance to impress on the left of midfield against Burnley. Dropped from the XI in the previous two Gameweeks as The Foxes opted for a 4-3-3, Schlupp staked a claim as a potential out of position option by netting in the 2-2 draw. Granted, with a single clean sheet all season, investing in Leicester for clean sheets alone doesn’t seem likely to bring in the points but if he can carry that goal threat forward, Schlupp has the upcoming fixtures to prosper.

Tottenham’s rearguard is key to their prospects…
Having de-railed the Southampton bandwagon, Mauricio Pochettino’s side turned in a steely display that suggests their defence is one to monitor. Granted, a trip to City is enough to ensure we steer clear for now but from Gameweek 9 onwards, the north London club are set for an excellent run of fixtures that could easily reap reward. Whilst the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor continues to toil up top, turning to Spurs’ backline may be the safest route when the fixtures clear and skipper Younes Kaboul, at just 5.0, looks the way to go here.

Tomkins is becoming increasingly influential for Big Sam…
The centre-half grabbed his second assist of the season yesterday as the Hammers comfortably swept aside QPR. Tomkins’ aerial ability from set-pieces is continuing to serve up the points, with Stewart Downing’s dead-ball delivery creating chances aplenty for Big Sam’s side. With a first clean sheet of the campaign also accrued, Tomkins is the man most likely to benefit from returns at both ends of the pitch for the ever-improving Upton Park outfit.

Benteke’s return looks timely for Villa…
It’s now three matches without a goal for Paul Lambert’s side as the early-season form quickly tails off. Bearing in mind they’ve just played Arsenal, Chelsea and City, though, it’s perhaps understandable, but the midlands outfit badly lack a presence in the box – Benteke’s introduction off the bench against City could hardly have come at a more crucial time, then. With back-to-back encounters against Everton and QPR’s shaky defences, Paul Lambert will surely be tempted to throw his star striker on from the start at Goodison in two weeks’ time.

The big hitters are starting to shore up in defence…
It wasn’t just Spurs that impressed at the back, though. City restricted Villa to a single shot on target, whilst Chelsea went one better at home to Arsenal, with the Gunners failing to trouble Thibaut Courtois or replacement Petr Cech over the entire 90 minutes. Jose Mourinho’s side have now served up back-to-back clean sheets and are starting to find a balance at both ends of the pitch – whilst it’s early days yet, the premium defences are showing signs of solidity, suggesting that extra outlay at the back could well be worth considering.

    What a topsy turvy weekend.

Was up to 40k in the world on Saturday night, with 6 still to play. Had a mare Sunday (no di Maria, Fabregas, Naismith) and found myself down at 160k. Any better transfer this week anyone can see than my planned Cahill > Baines

    Krul Foster
    Cahill Caulker Hutton Wilson Bertrand
    Tadic Sterling Siggy Lamela King
    Aguero Costa Pelle

Yeah, I see that. But I reckon Baines will outscore Cahill over the next 5.

Other option would be Lamela > Downing and Caulker > Baines for a -4. Could work I guess.

Honestly, I don't think both Aguero and Costa are needed. I think it's thrown out your midfield to much and that is what is causing problems.

I'm happy with having them both at the moment. Lamela is the obvious lame duck in my midfield, which I could sort out with a -4 for ADM, but I'm going to gamble on ADM not being productive in the next 3. His level of ownership surprised me, I was convinced on Saturday I was on for a big green arrow!

I know we have a while now but would appreciate some advice. I now have 2 free transfers. What should I do with this lot?

    Forster

    Moreno - Clyne - Chambers - Hutton - Wisdom

Di Maria - Fab - Siggy - Sterling - Boyd

    Costa - Aguero - Welbeck

Not a lot wrong there. I'd want some Soton attacking coverage, but don't know who you'd drop to bring it in. Maybe wait, and shuffle on Wisdom if it sounds like Gamboa will keep his place and save a FT?

Many are saying ADM is "essential" next gw, but he has Chelsea and City after that.
I should survive the 3 next gameweeks without him with this front 8? Then get him in for Sterling or Fabregas?

    Fabregas Sterling Henderson Sigurdsson Chadli

    Aguero Pelle Costa

I would say yes, but its risky. I'm hoping the tough fixtures mean he dries up, so us non owners can recover some points.

He has repeatedly proven he can do it against anyone. United may ship a few against City but don't be surprised to see them score and with ADM at the heart of it.

Decent as a cheap 4th mid imo. Too expensive and too much potential as a 5th.

Great pick..never mind all this fifth mid lark he should be 4th mid.

    3. rickardinho

      9 years, 8 months ago

I have him as one of my 5. I don't believe in the "5th mid" as I like to be able to rotate and actually use all my players. For example, so far my benched 8th attacker (in GW order: Davis, Bojan, Naismith, Siggy, Fabregas, Siggy, Tadic) have totally only 15 points from 7, whereas I've benefitted from a 6 pointer from Tadic and an 8 pointer from Downing among others. I'd say I'm about 15-16 points better off with a solid 5th mid there.

For that purpose Downing is absolutely perfect. He's on set-pieces, has good fixtures when 1-2 of my others have tough ones, is a BPS magnet (only Gerrard has more bps as mid than him), and he's been playing more advanced lately.

Because of having him I have 5.4itb to throw at Baines/Ivanovic (or both), AS WELL as being able to upgrade Tadic to Walcott or Hazard/ADM/Yaya if the need arises.

Why are people going for Kaboul over Rose? Rose is more attacking, and Kaboul has a history of being crocked. They also have Chiriches who is a strong contender for that spot (and Dier can play CB), while Rose seems to have nailed down the LB spot over Davies.

Just curious, on my wildcard and planning to pick one of them.

      1. Dier has been dropped over naughton
      2. Kaboul strong aerial threat
      3. When walker is back, rose might lose his spot and naughton might take LB
      4. Kaboul is playing better atm

Its basically the same as people going for Kompany over Zabaleta.

Who would you say is 'currently' essential as a midfielder, with form & fixtures for next 6 weeks?
    A, Fabregas
    B, Hazard
    C, Sterling
    D, ADM
    E, Silva

    1. Wheato182

      D. I reckon (although no evidence to go on) he'll be fixture proof as well.

None of those are essential, in that one isn't heads above any other... at this stage any of those players could be the highest scorer of that lot after 6 GW's.

    3. rickardinho
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 8 months ago

I only have Fabregas and Sterling. I think Sterling is the only "essential" one for the next few games.

ADM is a minor annoyance though. I'd rather have Hazard over him though tbh, even though I already have Costa-Fab

Aguero will arrive from far-east Asia on Thursday night/Friday morning before an early-kickoff Saturday game, having played a tough game against Brazil in Beijing on Saturday 10th (which is always very punishing for strikers who get kicked alot) and then a friendly with Hong Kong in HK on Tuesday 14th.

I highly doubt that he'll be fully fit to play 90 minutes.

    1. Mata-Is-The-Juan

I'd do B. My reasoning is as follows: Baines dropped 0.1M in price, the worse case scenario is EVE look solid at the back against Aston Villa after the international break and he rises back to 7M ---Then you buy him, based of a solid display. Otherwise, you could get him and EVE could still be leaking goals.

Choosing Weblz was easy as he won't be facing defenders the likes of Chelsea for a while. ARS should easily create chances and he's looked a decent finisher.

Clean sheets aren't the most important factor when getting Baines in.

True but you can't expect a goal or assist from him every gameweek surely? I could be wrong but I expect some level of defensive solidity from defenders I'm buying for 5M+

Kompany worth a punt at that price?

I'm thinking Mangala or even Azpi worth a look at especially as they are 0.5M cheaper and should have similar point hauls. I'll concede the Belgian has the greatest goal-threat among all 3 but Mangala could equal him IMO.

If you haven't used your WC by now isn't it better to just wait for winter double gw's and/or catastrophic injury/suspension issues?

If you use your WC now you are either using it for one or two decent enough moves at best

    Or

You have mismanaged the start of your season entirely, missing every rise, wagon and trick in the book so far, thus leaving your TV low and inevitably... No need to WC.

Baines. Aguero. Ramsey. Sturridge. Theo are the only names really floating right now, and WC for any of those names in or out is not even fathomable.

    Am I way off?

I'd rather take a hit to bring Baines//Aguero//Hazard//Sturridge//Theo + any other attractive player in than use my WC. Trying to save it till later in the year. Hopefully, should have built some TV by then--it's a slow process but it's happening so am not too worried.

I did better last season with early WC.
However that could have been due to playing more seriously ?

I do recall though many WCarders in the dgw period last season complaining that not too much was gained ?

With the rotten luck I've had so far, won't be surprised to see me ruin that somehow 🙁

But still, it will be a nice opportunity to mess up so I'm relishing that moment 😛

I have had a decent start , but want a number of expensive players - for the "turn in fixtures"
Baines , Aguero , Sanchez . If I want these players I need to make at least 6 transfers.

Actually making 8 on WC and activated so no going back now.

      Got him-- not letting go.

Seems better value than Eriksen & Lamela. Only issue is the potential benching problem owning him brings, assuming you own Siggy + any 3 of Sterling//Cesc//Hazard//ADM//Silver.

            On wc Sanchez , ADM ., Siggy , Chadli . 4.4
Present Ramsey , ADM , Siggy , Sterling , 4.4 So prob going to drop Sterling - not an easy decision of course

Benching problems are headaches and honestly no matter how well you guess/predict, you will leave points on the bench.

Your new midfield looks good btw--- Do you plan to leave some money in the bank to upgrade Chadli or Siggy should one of the 9M+ hit form [and also Theo]? Or is the plan to downgrade Sanchez in the long-run? Not that planning in fantasy football ever goes how you want it to lol

Lol no , only 0.1 itb.
But will look at ADM or Sanchez out for Wally or Haz if I need to ?

Plenty of time though and a couple of injuries in the international games and it will change again.
