Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Kompany Plays Down Injury Fears

Man United pair Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao are in the goals for Holland and Colombia respectively. Gylfi Sigurdsson strikes for Iceland, Nacer Chadli continues his fine form, whilst Vincent Kompany hobbles off in Belgium’s win over Andorra.

KOMPANY WITHDRAWN IN BELGIUM ROUT

Man City’s Vincent Kompany was subbed off early in the second half for Belgium with a knee injury. However, the centre-back confirmed post-match that the problem is not a serious one:

“I came off as a precaution. Before the game, I already had a slight problem and the coach decided to take me out. I am now getting ready for Bosnia. It was not easy out there.”

The Scout Says: With an ownership of over 14.1%, Kompany is in the top ten most selected defenders in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), despite City’s poor defensive record this season. Manuel Pellegrini’s outfit now have just one clean sheet in their last six league outings and look far from the solid rearguard that we have invested in so heavily in in past campaigns. The fact that Marc Wilmots was willing to risk Kompany against the minnows will surely have displeased Pellegrini and the defender’s words suggest that, in spite of last night’s problem, he wont be rested on Monday either. Given that new boy Eliaquim Mangala has yet to find his feet at the Etihad, City will certainly be reliant on their captain’s fitness if they are to overturn their current defensive form and finally begin to challenge the likes of Chelsea and Southampton for our backline interest, starting with their Etihad clash with goal-shy Tottenham next weekend.

CHADLI ON TARGET AGAIN

Tottenham’s Nacer Chadli bagged Belgium’s third goal as they thrashed Andorra 6-0 in their Euro Qualifier yesterday evening.

The Scout Says: The 6.3-priced midfielder’s form is starting to looks too good to ignore, with returns in three of his last four league appearances indicative of his current appeal. Whilst Erik Lamela has failed to live up to his pre-season hype, and Christian Eriksen’s outlay has proved far too inconsistent, Chadli’s budget status and consistency of points has seen him rise to the forefront of Spurs’ assets. However, despite sitting third in the FPL midfield standings, the Belgian’s ownership remains at just 11.5%, a figure dwarfed by those midfielders in similarly lofty positions. Spurs have a delightful run of fixtures once the Gameweek 8 clash with Man City is out of the way (NEW, avl, STO, hul, EVE) and Chadli is surely starting to appear on many manager’s shopping list right now.

HAZARD LEFT OUT AGAINST ANDORRA

Eden Hazard was omitted from the Belgium side last night “as a precaution” according to his international manager Marc Wilmots, though his toe injury is believed to be minor and he should be available for Belgian’s next qualifier against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday.

The Scout Says: Hazard’s absence last night will have plenty of his owners fretting, though Monday’s fixture against Bosnia will give a far better idea of his fitness levels. With Chelsea facing Crystal Palace a week from today, Jose Mourinho will be keen to have Hazard back in the fold, especially after the 9.9-priced midfielder’s superb showing against Arsenal last time out. Mourinho could at least take one piece of encouragement from the Belgium match, as Thibaut Courtois played the full 90 minutes between the sticks to allay any fears over any effects from the concussion sustained against the Gunners last weekend. Petr Cech’s hopes of a return to the first XI look dashed, then, whilst Courtois’ owners will be optimistic of more rewards with Chelsea looking to build on two consecutive league clean sheets in their clash with Palace next weekend.

SIGURDSSON STRIKES FOR ICELAND

Gylfi Sigurdsson was on target for Iceland last night in their 3-0 European Championship Qualifier victory over Latvia, curling in his side’s first goal in the away win.

The Scout Says: Sigurdsson’s strike last night was his first since he notched against Man United in Gameweek 1 and our recent Monitor article highlighted how little goal threat the Icelander has offered this campaign in comparison to his previous spell with Swansea. Despite this, the playmaker still sits atop the midfield rankings in FPL with 46 points, with his assist rate more than atoning for his lack of threat in front of goal thus far. Sigurdsson has notched six assists already this term, two of which came against Newcastle last time out for Garry Monk’s outfit, and with two tempting fixtures on the horizon for the Welsh side (away to Stoke and home to Leicester), the 6.8-priced man’s allure is still as strong as ever. Non-owners should be wary, however, as the Swans then face Everton, Arsenal and Man City from Gameweek 10-12, and Sigurdsson may well have his work cut out in replicating the form that has seen him harbour so much popularity up until this point.

United Frontmen in the Goals

Robin van Persie slotted home an 89th minute penalty for Holland as they overcame Kazakhstan 3-1 in their Euro qualifier last night, whilst Radamel Falcao opened the scoring in Colombia’s 3-0 win over El Salvador.

The Scout Says: Having struck against Everton in the previous Gameweek, and with an assist also accrued in each of his previous two league matches, Falcao is clearly stepping up his match sharpness with every passing appearance after months on the sidelines with a knee injury. Despite acquiring over 14,000 new owners since his Toffees goal, he remains a relative differential with a mere 9% ownership, whilst Van Persie’s 12.4 price tag has ensured he sits in just 2% of teams right now. Nevertheless, the Dutchman has notched in two of his last three league matches for United, with a conversion rate of 20% this season easily bettering both Falcao (9.1%) and Wayne Rooney (15.8%), and is likely to still be number one for penalties when on the field for United. With Angel Di Maria earning the main Fantasy attention amongst Louis van Gaal’s side right now, though, both front men are set to remain under the radar, but with a taxing schedule ahead (wba, CHE, mci, CRY, ars), the United forwards face a tough task to persuade us to invest right now.

Valencia Nets in Ecuador Win

The West Ham striker scored his national side’s only goal in a 1-1 draw with the USA in the early hours of this morning.

The Scout Says: Mainly overshadowed by strike partner Diafra Sakho for the Hammers so far, Enner Valencia has still managed a goal and assist in four starts for Sam Allardyce’s side. Bearing in mind he’s priced at 6.9 to Sakho’s 5.6, it’s understandable that few have been willing to take the plunge – all the more so given that Sakho has netted in each of his last five appearances in all competitions. Nonetheless, Valencia’s goal serves a timely reminder of his capabilities as the Hammers prepare for matches against Burnley, Stoke, Villa and Newcastle in the next six Gameweeks, and given West Ham’s new and improved attacking approach, he still has the potential to prosper.

I wrote a piece in the summer on stats...and which one mattered the most for mids. The main argument put forward was that you could actually base midfield picks on one stat alone for three of the midfield slots based on "touches in the box" (highest) without looking at any other stats whatsoever...(plus two set piece mids/all round players (Fab/Eriksen/ADM/Gerrard)

I quoted previous seasons for pts tallies for mids as proof of the viability of that stand alone stat (Hazard and Lallana last year ran away with it)

Anybody care to guess the top three mids for the most important "touches in the box" stat this season ?

And so where did Yaya Toure feature last season in terms of touches in the box?

Not saying its not a very important stat when considering midfielders, it clearly is, but to say that you can base your picks "on one stat alone" is to take a short-cut to thinking that i won't be taking.

          Bolasie
          Sanchez
          Sterling
          Silva

Only one of those is very likely to score a goal, in my judgement ...

Interested to know people's thoughts on the value of having 'strength in depth' in your team vs an obvious 'bencher' (e.g. Boyd).

Historically, a 'Boyd' was often necessary (at least early on) but, with so many good low/mid-priced options all across the pitch this season, it seems you can afford to rotate decent players in your attack without compromising the overall standard of your squad.

    The key arguments against the 'strength in depth' strategy seem to be;
    1. You will likely struggle to fit in two really heavy hitting FWDs (e.g. Costa / Aguero / Rooney).
    2. You will probably have less Captaincy options.
    3. You risk leaving points on the bench.

The first two, I think, are quite valid. The third, I believe, is the result of some selectively applied logic. Having points on your bench is annoying but it is still surely a better scenario than not owning that player at all. Equally, the same people that choose a Boyd typically have Costa + Aguero. The same logic would suggest that you would want only one captaincy option for fear of choosing the wrong one (particularly as your 'C' is usually the most important choice points-wise).

    The key arguments for strength in depth are;
    1. More opportunity to play the fixtures.
    2. Less impacted by injuries and more opportunity to save FTs.
    3. Probably in a better position if one of your starting players is omitted by surprise.

My team (below) follows the strength in depth strategy and feels very balanced but I'm also very much on the fence as to the best approach and have even considered WCing to get Aguero in (watching him play a good fixture when you don't have him is pretty tortuous).

Definitely something that's been on my mind and I thought it might be an interesting discussion topic, particularly with a lot of active WC's at the moment.

    My team for GW8

    Krul
    Baines, Clyne, Taylor
    Silva, Sigurdsson, Hazard, Tadic
    Costa (C), Pelle, Welbeck (vc)

    Subs: Foster, Eriksen, Dummett, Wisdom

I've never been a strength in depth type of guy in terms of my front 8, you're leaving more money on the bench than you need to thus minimising the maximum amount of money in your starting 11... Also having 8 strong attackers, you'll be frustrated when you bench someone like Siggy who then does well, as his high ownership means you've fallen behind. It's a case of trying to be too clever. Attacking rotations barely ever work out, and if someone gets injured - transfer them out. If it's a short term (1-2 weeks) injury then you can easily play your 4th defender for a week or two, or accept the 2 points from Boyd.

I agree with you mate, but I can see Innsie's (and others) points too. Though I don't agree Innsie with the arguement that you need to 'maximise the amount of money in your starting 11'. You want the guys who are likely to score the most points each week in your starting 11, and that's not always going to be the most expensive options.

      1. President John F. Keninnsie
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 8 months ago

Yep that's true Fitzy, but if I had the option between say Boyd + Welbeck or Chadli + Ulloa (just using these guys as an example) I'd choose the Welbeck one as I think he'd outscore the C+U rotation which would leave points on the bench. I guess it's just a coincidence that he costs more than the others, I didn't word my initial comment well tbf.

I've got a vested interest in this topic as I'm running with 8 viable options in my mids/forwards, at least for the next 5 weeks. Last week I benched Welbeck and played the cheaper Chadli which paid off, and I have mapped out who I'll be sitting out over the next 5 weeks - the thought of benching some of these guys worries me, but logic says an away game to City or Chelsea will be tough to expect returns in, especially when one of the cheaper front 8 has a plum fixture.

yes, i think a lot of people here get fixated on the. " He's more expensive therefore a better option ". Thats not a dig at you at all Insie but you here it a lot in here. Dzeko being a prime example last season. People slagging him off all the time because he was so cheap but he kept bagging decent points

agree with what you say about benched point. I never understand why people moan about bench points. seems lyk they prefer all their sub to get 1pt-2pt and be useless when they are needed.

i would say having a balanced front 8 is more for playing the fixtures..and i would say the most impt thing is choosing a team that is likely to get you the most points, not the highest value.

and in this current situation, with the emergence of cheap and good strikers, if u are not getting aguero u are likely to leave money itb, so its a good choice to have a strong front 8 to give urself more options.

though u could argue that with the eriksen money u could get a stronger defense..as it stands dummett and wisdom are not really good back up options, how about having boyd instead of eriksen and ivan instead of dummett? would give you the chance to play 433 at times depending on fixtures, and no doubt it improves your starting 11 as u can play ivan clyne baines most weeks with taylor wisdom back up

On this subject so, what are peoples thought on Mile Jedinak?

I have the template midfield at the moment: Di Maria-Fabregas-Siggy-Sterling.

I want rid of Mutch, he's cost me a fortune at this tage, but given that Jedinak is on penalties, i'm liking him as a 5th midfielder.

Is it worth going for a 4.5m 5th midfielder and pocketing the cash, or is the extra 0.5 an outlay you could live with for a 90min week-in-week-out player who's on penalties and will pick up the odd BP?

      Thoughts?

I could see sterling getting rested prior to important CL games. Same for Fabregas.
But moreso than either of them, i worry about it happening to Costa. My concern is big hitters getting rested.

There will be at least 1 gameweek this season i think whereby 90% of captaincies will be on Costa, at home to a lesser club, and he'll bench it out for a CL midweek game, and we'll all be scrambling to see who we gave the VC armband to.

That'll be the week that jedinak will come off my bench with a brace of penos, and my leftfield VC choice will have pulled in a massive haul.

I had Jedinak as my 5th MID the latter half of last season. He ended up doing okay (and, yes, I did end up getting the points for his penalty on my bench) but that was at 4.2. - I can't say I was tempted by him at 5.0 this season though, around that bracket, he is probably one of the better options.

Late to this but is an interesting question.

Generally I think the best approach is to get a strong 1st team. Id. spend 5m on an 8th attacker if they played regularly and had a bit about them but that's my limit.

I certainly would not make a sacrifice to my starting 11 for the sake of upgrading my non starters.

I'm not sure what exactly constitutes a punt on here, with everyone pretty clued up about "lesser" players who can score big hauls...but I'd say

      Cisse
      Mané
      And maybe Aiden McGreedy?

Given he's been out for weeks and there's a chance he may be brought on from the bench he's still a punt as well as a differential for gwk 8.

So, how do I actually strengthen this team..? 2 FT. Without DG'ing a midfielder to get Baines, I can't see any way to do it, even if I just use 1 FT! £0.6m ITB, maybe Schmeichel > Forster and double Saints def?

    Schmeichel

    Clyne - Rafael - Taylor - Duff - Moore

    Sterling - ADM - Fabregas - Siggy - Boyd

    Pelle - Aguero - Costa

As you don't want to downgrade a mid, a second Southampton defender looks the best option and save the other FT.

Hello, I am new to the community. Really like it at first sight. I am posting my current team after doing early transfers this time with a -4hit.
    Krul (Mannone)
    Clyne Duff Moore (Hutton Wisdom)
    ADM Siggy Fab Sterling (Cattermole)
    Costa Agüero Welbeck

Please help me with my team. Suggest some future plans. I know I have a shitty def without Ivan , Baines or any Chelsea or MC cover. I have 0.9m itb currently

The mid and attack is great but that defence 😆

Think you can do Duff to Alderweireld with that money, will give you double Saints to play every game for the next 5 then you just need to play one of the 4m crappers.

when rooney is back get him in for aguero, and use that cash to bump up 1 defender.

No way. Great underlying stats as you say, great fixtures, and dominating Sotons set pieces. It's all primed for him to start getting in the points imminently.

Yeah, I've just got him on the WC. To a certain extent, the stats probably do overpromise but he's certainly showing all the attacking promise of a player that justifies a 7.5 outlay. The set-piece and penalties seal the deal for me. I'm keeping for Soton's run of three in four home matches and even considering Siggy > Mane.
