FFS UEFA Hockey World Cup 2014 – Semi-Final Week

Here’s our regular update on the competition, featuring a look at the Matchday 5 games that took place over Gameweek 9. We also have some fun handing out some Matchday Awards and a look ahead to the semi-finals this weekend. Please use this article for all tournament chat.

MATCHDAY 5 RESULTS

The final Matchday 5 results have been updated in the Cup spreadsheet and we can reveal that after a hard-fought group stage, England and Spain qualify from Group A, while Argentina and New Zealand qualify from Group B.

Remarkable scenes in Group B as New Zealand qualify over Netherlands by a goal difference of JUST ONE POINT. Rumors have it that ironic yellow cards to fellow Dutchmen Krul for time wasting and Van Persie for his celebration, both in injury time, cost Netherlands a spot in the knockout stages. It doesn’t get closer than that.

MATCHDAY 5 AWARDS

Louis van Gaal Award for the best attack – Netherlands with 522 goals

A Rainy Night at Britannia award for the best defence – England once again, conceding just 427 goals

Salma Hayek Overnight Award for the player of the week – McNulty (Germany) with 64 goals

SAF Management Award – Ellipsis with 98% manager rating

Jose Mourinho Award for the best press conference of the week – For the very first time, a non-manager makes a debut here only to oust the unbeaten Ellipsis. Deservedly it goes to Captain Thomass from Korea.

Hot Urine Treatment for the highest point scorer on the bench – Nice to Finally Michu (England) with 62 goals

Dalglish Differential for the worst team selection – Parmtree/Nate (Malaysia) with a 89% rating

Pep Guardiola Award for the highest goals scored during group stages – Netherlands with 3196 goals…..yet they’re disqualified (Really really tough luck guys)

Derby County Memorial Award for the worst attacking force during group stages – South Korea with 2870 goals

Tony Pulis Award for the best defence in the group stages – Argentina with 2913 goals conceded

David Luiz Geezership for the worst defence in the group stages – South Africa with 3155 goals conceded

Good morning ladies and Gentlemen, sports fans and the Spanish...it's knockout time!

We've certainly upset the book makers by getting this far but this is no surprise to us. As our campaign steam rolls onwards into the semi finals our self belief grows all the more stronger. Our training methods and fine tooth comb methods of analysis have been paying dividends and we've really cranked things up this week and somehow we've found another gear. All week the team has been working hard in preparation for this weekend and we're primed for the Spanish like a tightly coiled spring.

There is no point in hiding from the history between ourselves and the Spanish. There is little love to lose between us. We've had the upper hand on the old masters since 1816 during the revolution when we gave them a good hiding, declared our independence, set up the "Primera Junta" and sent them packing under the leadership of our very own JM (José de san Martin), Juan Hosé Castelli and of course Manuel Belgrano. Since then we've never looked back.

History is very much in our favour, both our male and female hockey teams sit comfortably ahead of the Spanish in the world rankings. Our football team has the upper hand on the Spanish also with a record of W6 D2 L5. Much like in the early 19th Century we expect our own Junta to send the Spanish packing once again.

Even some of the dejected Spanish football team want to defect to Argentina even trying to copy the kit following their fall from grace. They haven't quite got the stripes right though!

It must be said that going into this fixture as leaders as group B we appear to have shed our underdog tag and are considered favourites by many going into this huge fixture. We have never paid attention to any such labels though. We are delighted however to know that going into this fixture we are truly the fans favourites as Gauchomania sweeps the globe. We have the backing of the host nation (hup Holland!), the gracious South Africains, even the English are cheering us on to the final. We can count on the backing of the Catalonians and the Basques as well the whole of South America. What have the Spanish ever done for South America anyway...Robbed all the gold and gave everyone smallpox. Tiki taka ? You can keep it!

From humble beginnings the mighty Gauchos of 2014 have already done themselves proud. We will already receive a Hero's welcome but we're hoping to achieve the status of legends back home...
