Captain Sensible – Gameweek 11

Our weekly analysis of the Captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero is the runaway leader in this week’s Captain Poll, having earned 34% of the votes cast so far. The City striker is in imperious form as he rolls up to face a QPR defence that has conceded more goals (20) than any other outfit – having scored in four of his five away appearances to date, he could wreak havoc on a backline that has been breached at least twice in eight of the opening ten Gameweeks.

Southampton’s top scorer Graziano Pelle is also highly fancied ahead of a plum home clash against Leicester. The big Italian has delivered returns (13, 9, 15 and 5 points) in each of his previous four appearances at St Mary’s, and up against a side with a single clean sheet this season, seems poised to continue his ascent up the Fantasy standings.

Angel Di Maria is the top-rated midfielder, earning 13% of the votes as Man United prepare for the visit of Palace. The Argentine has been somewhat hit-and-miss at Old Trafford this term – racking up 14 and 13 points against QPR and Everton respectively but blanking against West Ham and Chelsea – whilst team-mate Wayne Rooney, who has scored in all three home appearances this term, has persuaded just 2% to hand him the captaincy. Like QPR, Palace have also conceded at least twice in all but two of the first 10 rounds of fixtures, with Neil Warnock’s installation proving detrimental to their defensive prospects.

Arsenal’s in-form Alexis Sanchez has just 9% of backers despite moving up front in recent weeks. The Chilean took his tally to 11 goals in his last 13 appearances with a midweek strike against Anderlecht and has racked up three consecutive double-figure hauls ahead of a trip to Swansea – Garry Monk’s side have conceded just three times in front of their own fans, though, and will be hoping to derail the Sanchez bandwagon this Saturday.

Diego Costa is regarded as the man most likely as Chelsea travel to Liverpool on Sunday. The Blues’ star striker has collected 5% of the votes so far, whilst Eden Hazard and Raheem Sterling sit around the 1% mark – a sign that few will be willing to roll the dice on the Anfield encounter.

West Ham pair Stewart Downing and Diafra Sakho have been largely overlooked for the visit of off-form Villa. Paul Lambert’s side have now conceded at least twice in each of the last six, and whilst Downing has managed just two assists in front of his own supporters this season, fit-again Sakho has scored in each of his three home starts against Liverpool, QPR and City and has averaged over eight points per appearance at Upton Park so far.

True, and I'm not saying they should. But he has a choice to make. Get beyond it, or consider retiring, because the way he's playing is woeful and can't continue if he expects to keep playing top level football. I know it's harsh, but it's the simple truth.

Chadli seems to position himself well and find himself in good situations. I dont particularly rate him, but you can't argue with his record. Nevertheless, I would go with Oscar.

I got Sterling out this week, was totally focussed on Hazard and a potential price rise that would have put me out of it that I completely forgot about Oscar. Don't regret it (yet). But Oscar definitely a good shout.

RMT while we wait patiently for the scout cast.

    Courtois
    Wisdom Coloccini Clyne
    ADM (C) Fabregas Sanchez Chadli
    Aguero (VC) Pelle Bony
    (Hamer, Naylor, Hutton, Cattermole)

    0ITB.

Feel like my defence is a bit weak, especially with the wasted funds in Courtois. Also the lack of Costa makes me a bit feart.

What is the current template team?

    Something like this maybe?

    Fabianski Foster
    Baines Clyne Chambers Naylor Wisdom
    Fabregas Sanchez Siggy Downing Tadic
    Pelle Aguero Sakho

    1. Piggs Boson
      • 12 Years
      9 years, 7 months ago

It's hard to say, it's currently changing.

      Forster - 4.0
      Baines - Clyne - Chambers - 4.0 - 4.0
Sanchez - Di Maria - Tadic - Downing - Boyd
      Costa - Aguero - Sakho

      1. rickardinho
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 7 months ago

I don't think Forster is the template GK now for two reasons:

        1. Limits outfiel SOU players to 2, and alot of people like me want 3 of Clyne-Bertrand-Mane-Tadic-Pelle.
        2. Southampton fixtures are turning for the worse. 7 of their next 9 are against top 7 opposition.

If Oscar can continue to perform he might just might make me more open to trading Fabregas for ADM or Sanchez (right now I have both Oscar and Fab), but as it stands Fab isn't going anywhere. Almost hoping that he gets booked against Liverpool so that I can sell him for ADM though, as I don't know who else to sell!

I prefer to have a great 1st sub to rotate, which in my case is Downing most weeks. He's overperformed though to force his way into my starting 7 from the bench. can't complain!

I wouldn't say that there is a template at the moment - you leaving out the game's highest owned player is a pretty decent proof of the variety of options.

My definition of "template" is that its the team that everyone is trying to move towards, the "ideal", rather than just the most-owned team.

he is indeed, but so are ADM and Sanchez... have to pick 1, or 2...

Oh I see. Well in that case I wouldn't have thought anyone is moving towards triple Southampton - after this week I expect plenty will be jumping ship.

Aguero, Costa, Sanchez, Di Maria, Baines and Chambers, then whatever else you can afford. That's what I would say is the template to go for.

I don't think its realistic to get ADM and Sanchez, unless it is by dropping Fabregas which i'm not keen on doing - unless i get Costa since i also have oscar. too much to have 3 chelsea attackers!

Fair enough. I can manage all six of those I've mentioned plus Cesc, but maybe it is quite difficult to do generally.

really consider buying Rooney this week for Welbeck and captain piggy
another option could be Hazard--->ADM (c) (or captain Aguero) and play Welbeck next week Tadic--->Hazard ( need him for WBA)
    what to do?
Is Rooney able to get similar amount of points?

Personally I think they are better options than Rooney in the same price range and considerably less too. ADM is plenty from Utd

Eriksen out for who?...no dosh in the bank.

    Could potentially do with 2FT's:

    Eriksen + Pelle > ADM + Sakho.

    Yay or Nay?

Normally Jagielka would be in my team, but there's a few reasons why I don't think I'll get him:

    1) I have Baines, who I think just about wins in terms of value, even though he costs more
    2) He averages about 2 goals a season, so reckon normalisation will set in and he'll start to pipe down a bit
    3) It means doubling up on Everton's defence which always makes me nervous, even though it probably shouldn't
    4) I have Chambers and having Chambers, Baines and Jags I reckon is OTT in the spending department

Agree with 1-3, but on 4 I don't think its OTT at all.

My defense is Baines-Clyne-Chambers-Naylor-Wisdom, which cost me 7.1, 5.0, 4.5, 4.5, 4.0, totalling 25.1m which I think is fine for a defense, particularly as this lot are all rising in price and scoring awesomely. The rotation until GW19 is sublime as well, with only 1 GW where I'm forced to play one of them in a bad fixture.

I have Baines and Chambers + 3 budget defenders who rotate well.

If you have Baines-Clyne-Chambers, you surely can't bench any of them, meaning you're not getting the best value from your 5 defenders.

I've got Coleman and Baines - they've racked up 80 points in the six premier league games they've played together.

i bench chambers half the time, not a big deal. he doesn't play burnley at home every week... although the way chambers, naylor and wisdom are playing its making clyne more expendable once his fixtures turn in gw13, if i have a FT that is. Not in any rush to change my defense though

Normalisation schmoralisation, Jags is not a goalscorer. Esp not in a side with Baines and Coleman.
