Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Giroud Back in Training for Gunners

Olivier Giroud returns to training for Arsenal. Chelsea expect Cesc Fabregas to be fit for the Gameweek 12 clash with West Brom. Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge hand Swansea a fitness boost, Ryan Taylor bags a brace for Newcastle’s reserves, whilst Danny Ings is at the double for England Under 21s.

GIROUD CLOSE TO GUNNERS RETURN

Olivier Giroud has returned to full training with Arsenal after recovering from the ankle injury he sustained against Everton in Gameweek 2. However, Mesut Ozil has now revealed that he is likely to be out until the New Year with a knee injury, contrary to initial reports that the German would only be missing for around ten weeks after suffering the rupture against Chelsea in early October.

The Scout Says: Whilst the news surrounding Ozil had looked set to diminish managers’ fears of rotation in the Gunners’ midfield, Giroud’s return now throws a spanner in the works. Given the form of Alexis Sanchez, Wenger seems unlikely to shift the Chilean out of a central berth right now and a spot up front for Giroud would raise real concerns over Danny Welbeck’s role. Arsene Wenger has previously talked up the former United man’s ability to play out wide, and his flexibility could indeed save him from dropping out of the starting XI if Wenger sticks with a 4-4-2 set up, though with Theo Walcott also back from injury, Welbeck could face a tough task of retaining his starting berth once Giroud gets himself up to full match sharpness.

CHELSEA CONFIDENT ON CESC RECOVERY

Chelsea have confirmed that Cesc Fabregas is likely to be fit in for their clash with West Brom in Gameweek 12 after the midfielder withdrew from the Spanish national side’s squad earlier this week with a hamstring complaint.

The Scout Says: Since news of his withdrawal emerged a few days ago, Fabregas has lost significant ownership for the first time this term, with 35,000 managers having finding a quick exit route. Yesterday’s news should see that trend slow, however, with the Spaniard’s consistency of returns so far this season enough to ensure that most will now be happy to hold. Nonetheless, Fabregas is currently balanced on the suspension tightrope with four yellow cards to date, and with team-mate Eden Hazard grabbing double figures in each of his last two home appearances, managers currently in the market for Chelsea midfield coverage ahead of their enticing upcoming schedule (WBA, sun, TOT, new, HUL) are unlikely to look past the 10.0 valued Belgian.

ENRIQUE NEARS REDS COMEBACK

Full back Jose Enrique is back in training after missing Liverpool’s last two league fixtures with a knee problem.

The Scout Says: Having only made one start so far this campaign, Enrique is unlikely to oust Alberto Moreno from the left back berth when the Reds travel to Crystal Palace in Gameweek 12. Moreno has earned bonus points on both occasions he’s collected a clean sheet this season, and with Palace having only struck once in their last two fixtures, the defender could be set for further returns next weekend. Liverpool have only managed one shutout in their previous seven, but boast a decent impending schedule (cpl, STO, lei, SUN) and managers willing to gamble on their backline will surely be eyeing up Moreno as their preferred option.

WIDE MEN On COURSE FOR SWANS RETURN

Wingers Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge are both expected to be fit for Swansea’s trip to Man City next weekend after recovering from groin strains, though the Welsh outfit have ruled out centre back Federico Fernandez for up to three weeks with a calf complaint.

The Scout Says: With Dyer and Routledge back in the fold, Swans’ boss Gary Monk is posed a selection headache over the coming weeks. Jefferson Montero’s run of form since securing a starting spot in Gameweek 9 should see the Ecuadorian immune from rotation for the time being, meaning that the returning duo could battle it out for role on the opposite flank. With that in mind, Montero, who has acquired an assist in two of his three starts, looks the best bet for those seeking an alternative to Gylfi Sigurdsson in the Swans’ midfield ahead of a favourable run of fixtures from Gameweek 13 onwards (CPL, QPR, whm, TOT, hul, AVL). Meanwhile, with Fernandez out of action, Kyle Bartley could be set to get the nod again for the City clash after being selected over Jordi Amat to play alongside Ashley Williams at the back against Arsenal. At 3.9, the former Gunner could be a steal if he can claim a regular role in a side who have tallied five clean sheets already this season.

TAYLOR IMPRESSES FOR MAGPIES’ RESERVES

Defender Ryan Taylor bagged a brace in Newcastle Under-21’s 2-1 win over Stoke yesterday, the second goal a curled free kick to put his side into the lead.

The Scout Says: Handed his first appearance of the season off the bench against West Brom last weekend following a long injury lay-off, Taylor will be hoping to finally contend for a starting role for the Magpies. With Paul Dummett shifted to centre back last time out, Alan Pardew could opt to utilise Taylor at left back, or he may even choose to move him on to the flank in light of their current injury problems in that area. Such out of position prospects would see Taylor move swiftly onto our radars, with his dead-ball ability a real weapon in his armoury. With clean sheets in three of their last four, and the fixture list currently on their side (QPR, whm, bur), many are considering the Magpies’ defensive assets right now, and Taylor could well emerge as the standout option amongst their ranks if he can force his way into Alan Pardew’s plans.

INGS ON TARGET FOR ENGLAND

Burnley’s Danny Ings notched twice yesterday as England Under-21s ran out 3-1 winners over Portugal in their friendly encounter at Turf Moor last night.

The Scout Says: As our recent KPI article highlighted, Ings’ form over the last four Gameweeks has warranted attention, though the striker sits in just 0.5% of teams at this moment in time. Despite scoring just once over that period, the Burnley man has registered 12 shots from inside the box and maintaining that form looks key to the Claret’s chances of staying up come the end of the season. The striker’s confidence will certainly be up after last night’s showing, but at 5.7, Ings still needs to do more before we can really consider him alongside Charlie Austin, Diafra Sakho and co. in the budget forward listings. With Stoke, Villa, Newcastle and QPR in the next four, though, he may yet find himself on our radars.

Mirallas Back in Toffees Training

Roberto Martinez confirmed the Belgian stepped up his recovery from a hamstring injury by returning to training yesterday, though the Everton official website confirmed their manager gave no indication when he expects to see the Belgian back in action.

The Scout Says: With two goals in the opening six Gameweeks, Mirallas had made a decent start to the season before sustaining the injury during the Merseyside derby at Anfield. Bearing in mind only one other Everton midfielder – Aiden McGeady, with a single strike – has found the net this term, Mirallas’ eye for goal has been a big miss for Martinez’ side. Granted, the Everton boss has a number of options out wide to cover for Mirallas and even trialled Ross Barkley on the flank last time around against Sunderland but, once fit, Mirallas looks poised for a first-team return – at 7.2, he’s a relatively budget-friendly option for those willing to accept Martinez’ occasional rotation in the final third.

welbeck is one borrowed time with Giroud lurking. Midfield is OK or at least not a priority (ADM and Haz wouldn't be my choice but plenty would disagree). Bego and Lovren are weak.

Afternoon. Not been on much recently, been trying to ignore fantasy football while trying to forget about benching Coloccini last GW 😆

Some quick advice on my team please... I'm thinking about saving a transfer. Is this wise? Or is there a glaring move that you can see?

    Begovic (4.0)
    Baines, Clyne, Coloccini (Chester, Moore)
    Sanchez, Hazard, Tadic, Downing (Marney)
    Aguero, Pelle, Welbeck

    Perhaps Welbeck --> Somebody?

Necastle are at home and have tighten up recently, besides you have Collocini so would be playing striker v defender.

Welbx will be going all out to score v his old club and its the 5:30 kick off, so you'll want him for that game?

I was horrified enough knowing that I'm bringing in Colo this week, I feel like he hit me one week early. I feel even worse for you on that, sorry mate!

On the Colo point, my reasoning for him over Dummett is that Dummett has more competition for places long term (Raylor, Santon) than Colo? Sound opinion and worth the extra 0.4m?

You sure have. But still the song in question has gotten to be punishable by law with imprisonment in theory. And like throwing bananas or making monkey sounds to black players it could be subject under hatecrime and thus a stopping of the game could be a possibility.

of course this wont happen and i have no idea under what term this song falls under in law, i just find the "venom" interesting and of course in no way hope for a disgraceful event.
Instead i'd like to see sportmanship as it was between Usa and Iran many years ago.

Here's hoping. I always love seeing good sportsmanship.

Ireland played England in the Rugby in Croke Park a few years back. If you're not familiar with it, Croke Park is the HQ of the Gaelic Athletic Assocation where they play Gaelic Football and hurling. In 1920, an Auxiliary Division of the English army, opened fire on the crowd at a Gaelic football match in Croke Park, killing fourteen civilians.

The GAA opened it's doors to the rugby for a brief period in 2009 while the Aviva stadium was under construction and as it happened. England came to play. The atmosphere was immense and I was delighted that all the fans acted maturely. There was no booing of the English anthem and there were no scenes of violence. I was also delighted by the most passionate display of rugby I've ever seen from an Irish team 😉

“Brown is suffering a little bit because of how well Saido is playing – and I don’t think people would be too pleased if I left Saido out to play Brown. People talk about the fee for Brown but people have also been talking about what fee Saido would command. You’re looking for partnerships and people who can play together. I’m not saying they can’t play together but they’re both of a similar type and they’re at their best going in behind people. Unless you’re going to play quite a direct style, two going in behind isn’t very effective.”

I don't think its a bad move at all. West Ham look much more capable of scoring than QPR. They've scored 2/3 goals in each of of their games before Villa, bar United where they still scored one. And Chelsea and City proved its not that easy to score there anymore.

Yeah don't worry dude. Sakho still has plenty of good games to come, WHU have a great run of fixtures for a while. QPR will be inconsistent, which means Austin will still blank a lot. He's just the current kneejerk at the moment, that's all.

Giroud displacing Welbeck is the main worry of those 3. Big Sam would be very foolish to ditch Sakho for the likes of Carroll, it isn't just that Sakho has been getting the goals, his overall contribution has been immense really.

I'm hoping Coventry go on a surprise cup run, although they'll probably fall at the first hurdle

According to a list from last year Anelka's total is £95.8m.

Suarez is £5m from Groningen to Ajax, £22.5m from Ajax to Liverpool and £75m from Liverpool to Barca.

              Total of £102.5m.

Reckon that puts him in second place 🙂

He will get stick, tons of stick. He'll get booed every time he touches the ball, like Rooney does at Everton, RVP/Nasri at Arsenal, John Terry at every ground etc.

There'll be bugger all sectarianism though (thank God). That crap is almost exclusively the reserve of the Old Firm ugly sisters. The rest of Scottish society couldn't give a monkeys. The people most likely to do that, that is a bigoted subsections of Rangers fans, actually despise the SFA/Scottish football team as much as anything Irish.

Both him and McCarthy were brought up in Castlemilk a suburs of some sort to Glasgow which are sort of Irish when it comes to kt's population. There are videos on youtube of a 9 year old Aiden playing with a ball inthe streets of Castlemilk dressed in a green Irish national team shirt. McCarthy wwere brought up just a few blocks from Aiden in "Irish" Castlemilk.

They qualify for ireland under the current FIFA/UEFA rules. That's all there is to it. They are entitled to play for who they want.

But you must see how it sticks in our craw? Two players born and raised here who would've walked into our national side play decide to instead play for another country who have no more chance of success. If they were off to play for Spain or something maybe it'd be a different matter. Similarly if they were never going to be good enough to get into the Scotland team we wouldn't care as much. But they would have been two of our best players.

Of course i see why it sticks in your crew, that's my point cause Castlemilk is still Scottish even though maybe a majoroty of the population there descend from the Irish in some cases 150yrs.
This game is due to those players and obviously many other reasons a lot more then juat another game, it is very special

Not at all what i meant. What i meant is more that they still very much celebrate that they descend from Ireland even though they are Scottish, in no way would i sudgest they are not Scottish. You see it when you walk the streets there cause there are lots of Irish colours everywhere.
Then you have the system which makes it possible for an individual to chose the team they want to represent, for Aiden it was a clear call early on. I like that system.

So newcastle have recalled their young centre back Streete from Port Vale. Rumours are that colo or s.taylor are out for longer than expected. With Dummet performing so well in that position (two CSs twice he's played there), there's a strong chance he could be kept there, allowing R.Taylor to be drafted back in at LB.

    £4.4m anyone? https://vine.co/v/O5BiAeX19gH (from last night's U21 match)

In all seriousness I'm not sure of the pecking order there - Haidara stepped in at LB in the last game. I'm really pleased for Ryan Taylor to be back playing football again but it's still a hell of a punt to gamble on him being nailed on enough to bring him into your team.

Yeah, if s.taylor and colo both fit then that could see him on the bench too, with dummet back at LB. If he does break into the team though, and looks secure, then he'll be a steal at £4.4m I reckon.

He hasn't scored one goal for us since he joined, not one! Absolutely shocking. Add that to Altidore who we signed for £6m and that's about 2 goals in 2 seasons for £11m 😯 🙁

Yeah not been good Sess. You really need to find a 15-20 goaler asap. Who was your last one? Did Fletcher ever get that many for you?

Bent was the last goal scorer we had that could register those sort of numbers, then Phillips before that. Since then we've really struggled in that position and no coincidence that during that time we've been battling relegation every season too.

Trouble is he's been shifted out wide to accommodate fletcher and has been awful in that position. It's really upsetting our team balance, but think poyet wants to keep him sweet and in the team, as we're still trying to get him to sign a new contract.

I think wickham has a lot of potential, but even then I'm not sure if he's a 15-20 goal a season man. Fletcher on his day is great but seems to score in streaks.

    @HVT / iCon / anyone

What's the score with the whole Scotland / Ireland / N.Ireland stuff? I don't really understand it?

E.g. why is N.Ire sometimes called Ulster? Is that the same thing? Why do some Scots support Ireland instead of Scotland? Why Ireland and not, say, Northern Ireland or England?

Also, a bloke I used to work with insisted on calling Northern Ireland "the Occupied Teritories" even to customers - what's that all about? He was too scary for me to ask and used to say it through gritted teeth!

N Ireland shouldn't be called Ulster. Ulster is a provice of the island of Ireland, consistign of 9 counties. 6 of these form N Ireland, whilst the other 3 are in the Republic of Ireland.

Depends how you see it, but most of originate from collective feeling of oppression from England and English backed actors / Irish back in the day. A lot of Irish emigrated to Scotland during famine and because of shared industries, so that's where the people who still cling onto it in Scotland believe they have connection.
Within Scotland there was also a long history within the religious groups, in that many Scottish Catholics lived in the north and Protestants lived in major west coast areas, so things like the clearances etc. added fuel to the animosity.

That is a really short version, but basically we are still only one and two generations from these experiences so they still have association with them. Coming from west scotland I have seen the connection to hatred reduce more and more as I have grown up. Will never go away completely as there are people and organisations who benefit from it.
So take my experience and multiply it by 100 for Ireland.

Hey MJ, wasn't avoiding answering this, was just away from my desk...as the others have said it's quite complicated and not anything that I've ever dwelt on for too long...Catholic/Protestant has a lot to do with it, but it's far too simplistic to just put it down to this.

Personally I love the Scots, as most of the ones i've met have been mad as two brushes and great for a bit of craic!

Posted yesterday and had no reply, does it make sense to do the moves below?

    Krul (Mannone)
S Taylor, Bertrand, PvA, Clyne, Duff
    ADM, Sanchez, Fab, Chadli, Albrighton
    Aguero, Costa, Berahino

For -8, I can do: ADM > Hazard Fab > Siggy PvA > Baines

Leaves me 0.1 in the bank. I could do just the last 2 for -4.

With Giroud coming back along with Walcott he could get rotated, not that I think he should.

I know I shouldn't because it is pretty sideways and it would mean a hit to lose Schneiderlin to raise the extra cash. But I would really like to do Fabregas to Hazard this week

Hazard just has so much more potential in the upcoming fixtures. If it was for free I would but don't think I can justify a hit.

he is very overrated imo , losing one of the best mids (backed through consistency over the years) is not wise imo

hazard mostly scores through pentalties and not much of an assist threat imo

Know what you mean, I'm bored of Cesc ticking over. Not for a hit though.

Hazard seems to be hyped up on this site everytim he plays at home... looks like hoping on / hoping off is the best strategy, especially comapred to the steady point poducers like Fabregas and Sanchez

Probably, was he not the highest scoring player last year? Or at least midfielder?

I would agree with this. Tempted to cash in on Fabregas and then you have the funds to bring in Hazard, Walcott, Di Maria etc in and out when required (other injuries permitting, of course). Not selling Fab because I'd lose 0.4 TV is becoming a bit of a millstone.

I probably am going to do Fab > Haz too..don't want to risk on the 5th yellow and potential price drop , though just one game ban , it still matters when you have Costa who is another one on the brink of suspension..and I do believe Haz will come good , he always does though not consistently..

Afternoon all, any tips for my team? I'm trying to work out a way of fitting Costa in but not sure if it's worth it for a -4 this week and losing Pelle with a good fixture. Want to get rid of Welbeck but to get Costa for him I'd need to either downgrade Cesc or have a 5.6 midfielder come in for Tadic.

    Krul (Begovic)
    Baines, Alderweireld, Robertson, (Wisdom, Hutton)
    Fabregas, Downing, Sanchez, Tadic (Boyd)
    Aguero, Pelle, Welbeck

Narrowed it down to my last two subs for transfer window 2 on Sun dream team. Euro games count and next window will be in 2 months. Who would you guys pic out of these two options? I'll include current dream team points.

    A. Ash Williams (52 pts) & Hazard (81 pts)

    Or

    B. Baines (57 pts) & Siggy (58 pts)

    Thanks for any help/feedback....

Why is Sterling not falling in price? He's the most transfered out player this week, is it a higher threshold to go below the starting price?

He's already dropped loads recently. Maybe the threshold tightens up a bit to stop him from getting silly low, quickly.

That's my guess, he's not dropped since last weekend, despite the most transfers out of any player in FPL

410k dropped him over the last 2 game weeks. This week just 42k have got rid, so that's quite a slow down.

Spot on. Above starting price you fall at the same rate as a rise (currently ~60k NTO) or 10% of ownership, whichever comes first. At or below starting price, it's always 10%. So higher owned players seem to fall quickly above SP, but slowly if they're at SP or below. See how Rooney and Ramsey dropped earlier in the season for other examples.
