Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 17 – The Weak

Having assessed those teams with Strong upcoming schedules yesterday evening, we now turn our attentions to those with less favourable fixtures across the next four-to-six Gameweeks. Three of the current top six face testing times ahead, whilst nearer the bottom of the table, Burnley face a tough task to steer clear of the drop zone.

Arsenal

“frisking

The Gunners are set for a tough time over Christmas, with four of their next six fixtures on the road. Trips to Liverpool, West Ham, Southampton and City will test their resolve, though it’s worth noting that Arsenal have failed to score just once all season – away to Chelsea – and with Alexis Sanchez, Danny Welbeck, Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud all offering options in the final third, their potent attack could still prevail.

Home clashes against QPR and Stoke certainly offer a greater degree of optimism but with Laurent Koscielny still struggling due to injury, it remains to be seen if the north London side can improve upon a run of two clean sheets in six. Fit-again Mathieu Debuchy, at 5.2, is the cheapest regular, though Calum Chambers should benefit if Arsene Wenger continues to court caution with Koscielny’s fitness over the busy period.

Southampton

“frisking

It’s five defeats in a row now for the Saints after last night’s demoralising cup loss at Sheffield United. With their confidence at a season-low, it’s difficult to see how Ronald Koeman can turn his side around in light of a schedule which pits them against Everton, Chelsea, Arsenal and United over the short-term, whilst trips to Palace and Newcastle will be far from straightforward, either.

Koeman has Morgan Schneiderlin, Victor Wanyama and Florin Gardos suspended for the Toffees visit, though will be hoping his decision to rest Dusan Tadic in midweek will reinvigorate the Serbian, who now has one assist in eight appearances. Graziano Pelle served a one-match suspension against the Blades but has similarly poor form, whilst a run of five matches without a clean sheet looks very unlikely to be rectified anytime soon.

Stoke

“frisking

After taking four points from their last two, Mark Hughes’ side are in decent form right now. Whether the Potters can maintain their recent revival looks debatable, though – showdowns with Chelsea, Everton, United and Arsenal in the next five Gameweeks suggest otherwise.

Certainly, Stoke’s defence has looked one to avoid for some time anyway – a single shut-out in the last 13 rounds of fixtures should have alarms bells ringing for anyone still holding the likes of Asmir Begovic or Ryan Shawcross. Jon Walters’ run of three goals and as many assists in his last six looks to be severely tested here – all the more so if Bojan fails to shrug off the hip complaint that forced him off at the weekend. Peter Crouch has notched in back-to-back outings since a first-team return but there are plenty of budget options around with far better fixtures.

Also Be Wary Of…

Chelsea
Clearly, Jose Mourinho’s side have the form, the class and the confidence to make a mockery of any fixture list and anyone owning Chelsea players will be more than happy to hold. Nonetheless, with four road trips in the next six (sto, sou, tot, swa), Eden Hazard’s owners will be desperate for a major improvement, bearing in mind the Belgian has just two assists away from Stamford Bridge all season. Last night’s cup opener at Derby will hopefully be a sign of things to come.

Like Hazard, Oscar has also toiled on his travels and earned points only once away from home, though the pair, along with Cesc Fabregas, also welcome West Ham and Newcastle to the Bridge over that period. Diego Costa’s 12 goals in 13 appearances continue to bring in new owners – rested in midweek, he could now be immune to his manager’s talk of festive rotation.

Surprisingly, Chelsea have managed just one away clean sheet in eight attempts but with four shut-outs in their last five in the league, Mourinho’s men have stepped up their resilience as they start to grind out results over the winter period.

Burnley
Sean Dyche’s side face three testing trips (tot, mcy, new) and a home encounter with Liverpool over the next four rounds of fixtures before the schedule smiles a little kinder around the Gameweek 21 mark. Bearing in mind that Burnley have scored more than a single goal on just two occasions so far, Danny Ings’ owners may be thinking twice over holding across the festive period, though three goals and a pair of assists in the previous five highlights his form. Elsewhere, budget favourite George Boyd may struggle for more than two-pointers, whilst a run of two clean sheets in 11 league outings underlines the Clarets’ issues at the back.

Newcastle
The Magpies welcome back Steven Taylor and Moussa Sissoko from suspension just in time for a derby clash with Sunderland this weekend. Alan Pardew’s side have now conceded in each of their last four, though, and the white-hot atmosphere of a Tyne-Wear encounter is always unpredictable at both ends of the pitch. After that, Newcastle face United, Everton and Chelsea in the subsequent four, with only a visit from Burnley providing the calm amidst a Christmas storm. Papiss Cisse showed against Chelsea he’s capable of producing regardless of opponent but with Pardew keen to manage his minutes, it remains to be seen how much pitch time he’ll be afforded over the packed festive period.

There is another way to do this City defender lark for anybody who has a good squad. Zaba is almost as certain as can be to start this week..damned near 100%...So bring Zaba in this week and Sagna in next week...All the good fixtures covered for certain.

It means having a City def on the bench each week but with rotation likely throughout the game the chances are a big hitting defender will be benched for most anyway, by default. At 5.1 for Sagna it may be a smart move.

Or you could pay 4.2m for a defender that will play EVERY week and will come off the bench if Zaba doesn't start.

It's basically playing 11.5m for a nailed-on city defender. They aren't that essential.

Seems like neither of them is good long-term. Both have spells of being world-beaters, just to get 1 pointers for 2-3 weeks.

Don't want to swap Chadli for Eriksen at the time when Eroksen takes over 1 pointer duty.

Wouldn't be too bothered. If you were committed to making that transfer I would probably still do it and not let the one game sway you too much. Eriksen is too important to their team to be dropped right now even with Burnley at home. Poch will be desperate for a win at WHL.

If one owned Hazard and Fabregas, and considered Fabregas rather inexplosive consistency weighed against Hazards unfruitful returns away from home, would Chelsea's 4 away fixtures in the next 6 be reason enough to transfer out Hazard and keep Fabregas, bearing in mind the sale would provide an extra 0.6 for future transfers?

I'll probably end up eating my words but I cannot understand how people are justifying spending 11m on him right now. 3 months since his last double figure haul & no set pieces.

He has to score more than once to get more than 6

Got me 42 points I think it was..no joke.

In a gw like this where u are not convinced in any of your captain options u can consider a def/gk if they have a great fixture...usually def as gk does not get bonus and no attacking threat

The fact that people are guessing which city players to get mean that there are no outstanding option currently at all. People just getting them for coverage and then trying to come out reasons to justify their decisions.

Yeah its logical to get yaya last gw.

But after dzeko injury i would say probably its wise to just get yaya or wait for a gw more to see the options.

As more defenders i will gladly wait to see whether kompany is out b4 making a decision. Basically i would just avoid the fullbacks.

Could be. Today was a positive sign, but still lack of finishing quality around him is a big problem for me. It will be very hard to carve out a spot for him in my midfield until Sturridge gets back, and even when that happens, I may opt for Studge 😀

Is this one of the best FPL-season yet? Aguero, Fabregas, Hazard, Sanchez, Costa, Baines etc have all been "essential" at some point but almost none have lasted.. there is probably 10-15 good options for strikers and even more midfielders, Boyd is scoring in exactly the weeks he needs to for those who own, Hutton scores his first goal in 4 years, Liverpool and maybe City are playing with false 9s.. and teams like Southampton, West Ham and Newcastle have all been on 4-5 weeks+ form streaks that have made huge difference for those who acted early..

That is exactly my fear. And also what the Scouts were anticipating. And I am 0.1 from being able to do the Fabs to Hazard with Mangals. Might have to take the risk and go with Clichy. Atleast I will be getting Haz next week.

A Baines is for Xmas, not just for life....wait no that's not it....
I'd go for the Mangler, fancy Kolarov to start at least one out of 3 home games.
Even if he gets the 5th yellow, you'll know in advance he won't play unlike Clichy when it could be a lottery

Ah does it, hadn't checked prices.
Suppose you have to ask is risk of *sub for Clichy* + Hazard, better than Baines/Zaba/etc + Fab? Do you have decent 4th and 5th defenders?

            • 14 Years

            My team is atm is:

            Heaton, (Krul)

            Bertrand, Baines, Dummet, (Wisdom, Hutton)

            Fabs, Downing, Siggy, Sanchez, (Boyd)

            Bony, Van Persie, Costa

            1 FT and 0 itb.

Winning my ML by quite a margin, so I can do calculated risks.

    Which one is better?

    A) Sterling and Jelavic/Sakho/Kane (Sterling decent fixtures and playing up front)

    B) Downing and Bony

A punt on A) with Sterling and Kane could pay off long term and leaves a bit in the bank I think which could mean another upgrade elsewhere in the team, giving the extra points.

But B) at the moment is safer.

did it a few weeks back to get agueo in. it was a fking -8 as well. then i had to take another -8 to sort my team out because EVERYONE died that week. butchered my rank, what a mug...

Lads, I cannot believe it but I am at 4k rank! This is entirely uncharted waters for me. Last week at 22k was about my best ever rank and scored 103 to vault up. Highest finish was last season at 23k.

So my question is, how do I stay here?! How do I not muck it up?

    1FT, £3.6 in bank
    Courtois - Heaton
    Cresswell - Chambers - Baines - Clichy - Wisdom
    Hazard - Downing - Eriksen - Siggy - Boyd
    Giroud - Costa - Kane

Thanks all. I got incredibly lucky last week, easily the best outright luck (and differential) luck I've ever had. I also accidentally left Wisdom (9pts) in for Baines. Just mental.

Well first things first. Good work.

To be that high and continue to improve your rank you need to grind your way to the top. A team should consist of the template players and some 2-3 differentials.

Putting the right keeper between the sticks is important, and most important of all, pur your armband on the right player Every week.

Looking at your team, you have a good mixture of template players and differentials.

Only weak spot, might be Chambers.

        Thanks!

        My season ranks go:
        GW 1 750k
        GW 5 387k
        GW 10 79k
        GW 15 22k
        GW 16 4k

I am looking for another heavy hitter in the MF, but at who's expense? I am loving the value at Siggy, Eriksen, Downing (for now). I also realise that trotting Kane out there for too long may not yield returns.

OK, please give me a response here chaps in struggling a lot more than usual with my decision here.

    Green (McCarthy)
    Baines Yun Dunmett (Chambers, Saylor)
    Sanchez Hazard Fabregas Downing (Boyd)
    Costa Bony Benteke

    1.6, 1FT

    Ideas:

A: Chambers > Zabaleta, next week Fab > ADM or Costa > Rooney

B: Fabregas > Nasri, next week Saylor > Coleman

C: Fabregas > Sterling, next week Saylor > Zabaleta

D: Fabregas > Toure, next week Saylor > Pocognolli

E: Saylor > ClichyRooney, next week Fab > Sterling / Di Maria

F: Hazard > Silva, next week Saylor > Coleman

I'm aware that not bringing in at least 1 defender will leave me with a very shaky defence on Boxing Day!

    Please help

Need to decide what to do with Lukaku and Siggy, or more importanly, not have Bony or Rooney! (Have 3 swans already and nearly all of my rivals have Bony)

    A: Lukaku ---> Rooney
    B: Lukaku + Siggy ---> Rooney + Eriksen (-4)
    C: Lukaku + Siggy ---> Bony + Eriksen (-4)
    D: Lukaku + Siggy ---> Bony + Silva (-4)
    E: Keep both. Save Transfer.,

Feeling punty. What do think of bringing Kane in for Dzeko now and tale a cheeky punt on Sterling for Boyd the week after. After that I will rotate Austin and Kane. I know it's Liverpool but him playing as a false nine and great fixtures for Liverpool, should make him at least worth the risk until January wildcard heeehh?

My realistic options for Captain this week follow.
Your choice and reason, would be much appreciated.

I rarely have a captain problem. I put it on and watch the others outscore him.
This week I thought I'd have a stab at getting it right.

    Silva (Palace at Home)
    Kane (Burnley at Home)
    Bony (Hull Away)
Sanchez (Pool Away) Included because Liverpool appear to have no defence to speak of.
    Hazard (Stoke away).

Alexis for me. Think that game will have goals in it and Alexis and Arsenal will have a nice rest in them after Liverpool had to just play midweek. Not enamored by any of the other options. Alexis has also been incredibly consistent since he hit form.
