Captain Sensible – Gameweek 17

Our weekly members article focussing on the Gameweek captaincy contenders arrives once again tonight. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Man City’s home encounter with Palace has persuaded over 21% to back Yaya Toure with the weekend captaincy. The Ivorian has notched three times in his last five, and with Sergio Aguero injured, has dead-ball duties to fall back on – indeed, he’s scored and earned maximum bonus in each of his previous two at the Etihad.

Robin van Persie’s ascent up the Fantasy standings earns him second spot. It’s four goals and two assists for the United forward over the last four Gameweeks, and with three sets of double figures accrued in recent outings, over 13% have opted for the Dutchman who rolls up to Villa Park with his confidence high.

Charlie Austin’s home form has persuaded over 10% of voters to back the QPR top scorer. So far this term, he’s averaged 6.5 points per appearances in front of his own fans – with five goals and two assists in his last four at Loftus Road, Austin – who has also scored against the likes of Chelsea and City in recent matches – faces a Baggies backline that has been breached only seven times on their travels.

With 7% of the votes so far, Chelsea duo Diego Costa and Eden Hazard are also very much in contention for Monday evening’s trip to Stoke. Certainly, both will need to step up their away day displays – Hazard has just two assists on his travels all season, whilst Costa has netted in just one of his last four road trips. Bearing in mind that Mark Hughes’ side have just one clean sheet in 13 Gameweeks, though, the Blues’ main men will be optimistic of prevailing at the Britannia.

Tottenham’s home encounter with strugglers Burnley has earned Christian Eriksen plenty of new backers. The Dane has racked up three sets of double-figures in five and has played a part in five of his side’s last six goals – as a result, he earns 6% of the votes cast so far.

Judging by the Poll, there are a number of candidates who could prove to be real differential options this Gameweek. West Ham trio Stewart Downing (3%), Diafra Sakho (2%) and Andy Carroll (1%) play host to Leicester, whilst Wilfried Bony’s eight goals in ten has convinced just 4% to offer him the armband as Swansea head to struggling Hull.

Was contemplating Costa > RVP. Then i compared the two in the members stats. Looks like RVP has just been converting the few chances he has as of late. There is no contest in terms of attempts, involvement or, surprisingly, chances created, Costa wins hands down.

It is, but for 12.6m, he's not getting enough chances. He's also not creating any chances for his teamamtes, maybe one a game.

Bony gives you what (actually more than) Costa gives you, at a significantly cheaper price. More or less a goal a game at the moment.

Conventional wisdom otherwise known as logic. I like to make logical decisions, and change them when logic states otherwise. For me, Bony more than accounts for an absence of Costa in my squad.

yeah Bony may start to outdo him

Costa will have 10 yellows before February and maybe even a flat out red in that time too

possible, but Costa needs hamstring surgery so that means they have to baby it if it's to wait until summer and he's almost guaranteed a booking a match it seems..

Agree, Bony & Cesc/Hazard > Costa & Sigurdsson. Difficult to make the swap for most as it would likely be for a hit.

Isn't that swayed somewhat by Van Persie's atrocious start to the season? I don't have access to all the members' numbers but against Liverpool his shot numbers look reasonably healthy 5 shots, 4 in the box according to ESPN

He's improved slightly over the last 4 GWs but nothing too drastic. The main think is he has converted 60% of his chances. No way will that continue.

Yeah, that's true. He's too pricey for me to consider but if United are actually turning things around that could be a mistake. He has penalties and since United have just the league to pay for he should get more minutes than Costa.

He's also less angry/riled up than Costa (who has a massive seven yellows already) and less fragile (though probably marginally ha)

Yes but while it might not continue, there's a good chance that United's play improves to compensate otherwise as the injuries finally relax and we get some consistency in the back and world class players like ADM and Falcao on the pitch again..

Both teams have been on tv enough, Costa often looks involved and looks like he could have a big score almost every game. RVP, i can't recall many misses, chances created, involvement.

RVP has 4 goals & 2 assists, but 2 goals have been fortunate and one assist very fortunate.

Good point . And if their play improves then anything is possible.
I would like to see how they play against "weaker teams" that will park the bus though, They have not been especially creative at all , relying almost solely on a counter attacking game . And even the most biased MU supporter must admit that they have been a little lucky in the last 3 or 4 games.
The Villa game may provide some answers.

more than a little..we have 18 points from last 6..while something closer to 8-9 is probably fairer..we've been dire and boring

but in the end we took our chances and our opponents didn't!

he's never been converting at that rate, you should stop using 60% as a number

Costa was converting at 41% the first 8 weeks of the season and that clearly stopped as he's been at about 15% the second half

Well either your site is wrong or the member section is wrong OR you read the stat wrong.

RVP has 60% goal involvement but his conversion rate is under 31%. Very, very different stats. One is easily sustainable depending on tactics of the team whereas the other depends more on the mood/ability/form of the player.

Across the seaosn, Costa is beating RVP by only a handful of chances, both on and off target and has a conversion rate twice that of RVP's. However you split the season in half, Costa's conversion in the second half is a third of what it was in the first half.

Admittedly RVP has about 2 games worth of playing time more but when you consider the team around Costa vs the team around RVP and the standard of play of both teams it's really far far closer than any of the detractors think.

Yes 2m more, but for that 2m you get a player less fragile (if only marginally), one on pens, one who doesn't really get booked too often, and one who has no other competitions to worry about (until FA Cup starts up) and will start week in and week out.

No of course, of course, I'm just saying when comparing players like we are and listing pros and cons for each things like this should be kept in mind.

We know Chelsea's current level and we know that Costa provides at that level. What if they dip in form?

We know United's current (low) level and we know that (recently) RVP is providing at that level. What if they turn up now that injuries are dissipating and players are returning to the fold?

Don't understand how you could give yourself a problem like this. I wouldn't structure my squad to include 8 starters in the mid and forward positions . Looks like a headache every week?

I think last week's suspension/injury apocalypse has left a couple people in this position. If you didn't want to sell Cesc/Austin, but instead stash them on the bench, grabbing a solid player for last week made a lot of sense. It makes for a tough decision but it's rare that all of my attackers get returns, so I just need to make the right benching call.

Yeah, I'm happy through this busy period with mighty front 8 rather than best 7 + fodder (ie. Boyd)

I don't believe this is a problem at all. 3 players under 6M who can be rotated according to the fixtures. Also gives a strong bench to cover the inevitable team squad rotation over the christmas period up to the Jan wildcard. Having said that I would probably bench Fabs this GW.

The last PL-game spurs played at WHL ended 0-0 against Crystal Palace, where Crystal Palace could've scored 5 goals..

In the PL: Kane has 1 assist and 1 own goal at WHL
Eriksen has blanked in 6/8 games at WHL

      But go ahead

Stoke has conceded many goals at home, so HAzard or Costa over Kane

I have Austin and Sakho, am going for Sakho

Austin has pens in his favour but West Ham are better than QPR and WBA are better than Leicester

How long Mirallas is out for? Hopes of him recovering for next GW and spoiling it for Baines owners?

Likely to be back very soon.

Do you think Sterling will keep his place upfront when Ballotelli returns?

No but still worth it given the fixtures imo

Think so, next to Balo. IF Rodgers puts Balotelli up as a lone isolated striker when he gets back I'll jump onto the Rodgers-out wagon

I agree I can't see it happening myself.

    Fabi

    Azpi Terry Baines

    Hazard Sanchez Toure Downing

    Austin Bony (c) Sakho

    Bench: Guzan, Siggy, Dummett, Hutton

    Any changes to personnel/captaincy/formation?

Yes, please change the dynamics of that team as soon as the WC is available.

But for this GW the team looks great. I would honestly play Dummet for one of the Chelsea defenders, but that is your call.

How do you mean "the dynamics of the team"?

Yer, I've considered playing Dummett over Azpi/Terry, but am gonna risk it.
