Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 19

Just a few hours after the final whistle went at St James’ Park, we bring you an update on those players who have picked up injury concerns on the back of today’s nine matches. A certain City midfielder is our headline act ahead of the champions’ home match against Sunderland on Thursday.

Aston Villa
Ciaran Clark was forced off with a back problem in today’s goalless draw with Sunderland. Paul Lambert also confirmed that Jores Okore, who replaced his fellow defender, was on the bench as he wanted to protect him after a lengthy injury lay-off.

Chelsea
Oscar missed the Blues’ draw at Southampton due to illness, as Cesc Fabregas was handed the role in “the hole” for the second time in three Gameweeks.

Everton
James McCarthy was withdrawn at the break in the Toffees’ defeat at Newcastle after suffering a slight recurrence of his hamstring injury. After the match, Roberto Martinez confirmed:

“It was more precaution. James came back from injury on Friday and was able to play 60 minutes and today, at half-time, he was at a very high risk of injury so had to come off. It was feeling a little bit tight and because we know his history of previous injuries, we had to protect that.”

Hull City
Gaston Ramirez was forced off at half-time against Leicester with Steve Bruce confirming a groin injury post-match. The Uruguayan has been suffering from groin problems since his arrival at the KC Stadium on loan from Southampton.

Leicester
Leonardo Ulloa was withdrawn early in the second-half of this afternoon’s win at Hull after picking up a knock.

Manchester City
Manuel Pellegrini has revealed that Yaya Toure missed today’s 2-2 draw with Burnley due to a groin problem and will be assessed ahead of Thursday’s home encounter with Sunderland:

“We hope that he will be because it was a lesser problem but after 48 hours maybe it is too high a risk to repeat – [it is] a muscle injury in his groin. Yaya was not able to play today, 90 minutes. It was a risk for him. The players that played today were the players who were able to. Yaya felt a problem at the beginning of the last game against West Bromwich. He was not 100% so I think it was not good for him to play today.”

Pellegrini is also uncertain over Vincent Kompany’s availability for the Black Cats’ clash:

“We will see tomorrow if he is fit for the next game. It is very difficult now to know. He has some problems still in his calf.”

Manchester United
Antonio Valencia was replaced at the break with a groin problem, Louis van Gaal has revealed.

Southampton
Nathaniel Clyne missed this afternoon’s draw against Chelsea due to an ankle injury. After the match, Ronald Koeman confirmed:

“He got a kick on his ankle. He’s out for around 10 days. I don’t think he’ll be available for Arsenal game”

Stoke
Mark Hughes has confirmed that Bojan was withdrawn late in against West Brom due to a potential hamstring injury but is optimistic the Spaniard will be fit in time to face United on Thursday.

Sunderland
Liam Bridcutt was forced off early off during Sunderland’s match at Villa after failing to recover from a head knock sustained in a clash with Christian Benteke. See Larsson was also withdrawn on 57 minutes with Gus Poyet confirming post-match that the Swede had twisted his ankle and sustained some ligament damage. The Black Cats boss did, however, play down the injury ahead of their New Year’s day trip to the Etihad…

“Seb has twisted his ankle. It is ligament damage, but nothing serious – a few days.”

Tottenham
Nabil Bentaleb missed today’s lunchtime encounter with United due to illness.

West Brom
Left-back Sebastien Pocognoli missed the derby loss at Stoke due to injury, according to reports in the local press. After the match, Baggies boss Alan Irvine explained his reasons for subbing off Stephane Sessegnon and James Morrison:

“Sessegnon has a bit of a calf problem that is on-going and has done extremely well to play through games.. James Morrison has been nursing a knee injury…Sessegnon and Morrison are going through a bit of discomfort. It wasn’t because they had played poorly. I was trying to look after them.”

As a Liverpool fan and Skrtel buyer next week (if all goes well) I shouldn't be saying this, but wouldn't mind a decent showing from Bony.

Whats the best front 8 right now in your option?

    How's this?

    Hazard, Sterling, Silva, Fabregas, Sanchez
    Benteke, Costa, Rooney

Not sure about Benteke - AVL don't score many.

That lot would give you a benching headache (and would mean a ropey defence due to the cost)

Benteke? He hasn't done anything this year. I do own him though! LOL! I'd say Austin would replace him easily.

Can you see any transfers worth making to this lot?

    Hart
    Zaba, Terry, Hutton
    Sanchez, Hazard, Eriksen, Silva, Downing
    Costa, Austin

    Elliot, Kane, Wisdom, Chambers
    Bank 0.1m, 1 free transfer

Chambers needs to go but my back 3 is ok this week and I'm not sure there are many better options out there for 4.9m or less (maybe an AVL double up with Vlaar, but then who to bench?)

        Yep, think I'm saving too.

2 freebies next week are probably worth more than replacing Chambers this week.

Who are you lining up as a replacement?

Reckon I am right to bench Kane this week? He's bang on form and looked decent again yesterday.

Yeah either bench Kane or Eriksen. Eriksen does have set pieces though.

Im thinking maybe getting Skrtel 😯 not a lot of decent alternatives. Could maybe downgrade and save the cash but seems a bit of a waste that coming up to Jan WC.

I shipped Chambers with my FT before his sale value dropped for me (probably tomorrow), but with Azpilicueta and Clichy I need a fully stocked roster of defenders to cover any rotation. It doesn't look like you have the same issue though.

So I've managed to climb up 57,000 more places this week to 170.000 overall with a 45 and Skrtel to play. Doesn't seem like that big of a deal, but when you consider I had a rank of 2,200,000 after GW 7, I think I've done alright for myself. Here's hoping to break into the top 100K within the next couple of weeks.

    Cheers!

Yeah, I had to remind myself that it's a long season and if I could manage to gain a green arrow most weeks, I'd be fine. I've had only 1 small red in 12 weeks! Gained over 2 million spots during that stretch!

I'd get in Silva immediately, it'll feel like points chasing but you can't avoid any longer, he has a great home fixture against Sunderland up next where he could easily deliver double digits. Sterling unreliable imo.

I think Sunderland will park the bus and be difficult for City to break down, if Silva blanks this GW he's got 3 pretty hard fixtures coming up all in a row.

        1. BenDavies
          • 11 Years
          9 years, 5 months ago

Silva is a world class player, and is central to City's attack. City will score in the 'hard' fixtures, and it's extremely likely he'll be involved in many of them. 'Hard fixtures' don't really apply to world class players like Silva in a team like City; they're always likely to score in each game.

True, but he's only human. Without an out and out striker I think it will eventually limit his output, especially in terms of assists.

I know it's a bit early, but forming your template team for the Jan WC helps in your transfer decision in the next few weeks even if you play your Jan WC late. Here's mine.

    Panti / Krul

Hard to say for the defense, but I like the overall look

Why did Vergini's bonus go down to 1 (and Hutton's down to 2). What do they deduct/add etc after the game?

I have a good defence and Siggy, Downing, Sánchez, Fab, Silva and Austin.

Vargas and Bony have to go.

    1 FT and 1.5 ITB.

Who to buy to replace them??

Benteke is a great option, with a home fixture against Palace followed by an away trip to Leicester. Burnley have some great fixtures after the Newcastle game, so maybe Barnes or Ings is the way to go. Costa would be ideal but he's out of your price range obviously, so Benteke, Barnes or Ings look good options short term.

ok -this is the continued story isn't it?
vargas to go this week-i'd punt on bps and goal friendly barnes...(vokes not even in squad today)to tide you over to jan WC
      and to next GW swap
Bony-you'll have an extra C1.9 to add to bony and 1.5 meaning you can go for one of the big boys or as i would suggest,(i know its leftfield),the 'rested' giroud from jan 10th

What to do with this team?

Need to sort the defence though :

    Guzan Gilks
    Clyne Chambers Hutton Naylor Wisdom
    Hazard Yaya Sanchez Fabregas Siggy
    Rooney Austin Kane

    1 FT 1.0 ITB

    A. Clyne -> Terry
    B. Clyne & Toure -> Terry & Silva (-4)

    Any other options? Thanks
