The Digest – Gameweek 19

Our last look back at the final Gameweek of 2014 brings Liverpool’s former Saint under assessment, whilst the Clarets’ fightback at Man City and the lack of reliable frontmen also afford us much to discuss.

The Player

It’s fair to say that Adam Lallana’s transition as a Liverpool player hasn’t been a seamless one. A guaranteed starter for Southampton last time around, he took his time to convince Brendan Rodgers – handed just seven appearances in the opening 13 Gameweeks, he served up just a goal and assist as the Merseysiders toiled from one match to the next.

With his team struggling for form, Rodgers has placed his faith in the former Saints skipper over the last month. Lallana has subsequently started all six league outings over December and vindicated his manager’s decision with three goals and an assist over that period, with a double against Swansea last night bringing him onto our Fantasy radars once again.

Rodgers’ new 3-4-3 system has not only helped arrest Liverpool’s slump, it’s brought their midfielders into consideration as the Reds boss relies on Lallana, Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho to lead the line in a high-pressing style of play which looks beyond the more lethargic Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert.

There’s no doubt that the nature of last night’s emphatic win over the Swans will give Rodgers’ side a real shot in the arm, and with the fixtures in their favour, Liverpool look poised to take advantage. As he showed last year, with nine goals and as many assists to his name, Lallana has the end product, providing his pitch time is guaranteed – with Leicester, Sunderland, Villa and West Ham in the next four, the 8.3-priced midfielder, who is owned by less than 1% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, may be poised to profit.

The Team

After heading into the Etihad dressing room two goals down at the break on Sunday afternoon, Burnley could have been forgiven for writing off their chances. City were on a roll, after all, and had won nine successive matches in all competitions, but in a stunning turnaround in fortunes, Sean Dyche’s side salvaged an unexpected points thanks to strikes from George Boyd and Ashley Barnes.

That morale-boosting draw could yet prove a pivotal point in the Clarets’ season. The Lancashire outfit still remain in the drop zone – albeit on goal difference alone – but one look at the following five fixtures (new, QPR, CPL, sun, WBA) suggests they have the chance to build on the momentum gained from Sunday’s result.

A single clean sheet in eight suggests that few will be keen to invest in the likes of Tom Heaton and Kieran Trippier at the back, but with four shut-outs already at Turf Moore, Burnley have shown they are capable of keeping out their opponents. Boyd’s returns from the flank hand his owners a quandary, though – mainly utilised as a bench-warmer by many, he could be a viable starter if he can kick on from this point. Up top, Barnes has now notched in three of his last four, whilst three goals and as many assists from Danny Ings in the last eight suggests that there’s plenty of reason for optimism as we enter the New Year period.

The Talking Point

Put frankly, Gameweek 19 was a complete write-off for the most popular forwards across the Fantasy games.

Diego Costa’s failure to score at Southampton, Charlie Austin’s blank at home to Crystal Palace and Spurs and United’s goalless draw at the Lane left the likes of Mame Biram Diouf, Ashley Barnes, Ayoze Perez and Danny Welbeck to hog the headlines and fire their owners up the rankings. Boasting an 11% ownership, Welbeck was the only popular forward amongst those scorers – having earned a single assist in his previous five, though, it’s fair to say he’s been far from prolific.

With Sergio Aguero still sidelined through injury, Olivier Giroud banned for a moment of madness and Wilfried Bony on the verge of departing for the Africa Cup of Nations, it’s arguable that there’s more diversity than ever before in our three-man frontlines. As the winter wildcard approaches, Fantasy managers are a little more willing to take gambles with their forwards to free up funds for the big-hitters in midfield – Alexis Sanchez, Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas have outscored every striker so far.

With a lack of reliable replacements up front, Aguero’s absence is making the armband decision a real lottery right now. Whilst his expected return in late January simply can’t come soon enough, it seems that for the time being that the restructuring process will continue until he’s back in contention. Given that the winter wildcard can be used at any point after Gameweek 20 gets underway until the end of Gameweek 23, it’s likely that our squads could retain this greater degree of variation until the Argentine’s comeback forces a re-think.

          Yeah.

I don't really see much pressing needs at the moment and maybe time for a few hitless weeks from me now.

Plus good to wait and see what the clubs that just sacked or are about to sack their managers do. If Pulis goes to West Brom then Foster is a, ahem, keeper (pun intended). But if it's Sherwood then I'll probably get rid of him with my WC.

What to do with Welbeck and Yaya Toure... in this squad (selling value = 17.8).
1 FT, 1.2 itb... (so 19.0 funds available if I sell both)

    Hart (Krul)
Hutton --- Ivanovic --- Jones (Naylor --- Rose)
Silva --- Hazard --- Yaya Toure* --- Sterling (Boyd)
    Austin --- Welbeck* --- Benteke

How's this for a potential WC team when Kun comes back.

    De Gea Gilks
    Terry O'Shea Wisdom Hutton Cameron
    Sanchez Hazard Fabregas Downing Boyd
    Falcao Aguero Kane

Obviously not gonna be my team as there are too many variables floating about but I like the look of it. Defence perhaps a bit weak but pleased with that effort for what it is.

Right, bear with me here. But when I wild card next week I’m seriously considering a front three of Austin/Kane/Sakho

This basically allows me a midfield of Sanchez, Hazard, Fab, Silva & Di Maria (or Mata if still injured) with enough room in the bank for a defence that includes Baines AND Azpi (plus three cheap ones).

Anyone interested in this tactic? With Kun out no strikers are banging in the goals, certainly not the expensive ones, so why not play 3-5-2 with the best midfield in the game and rotate three strikers who are nailed on?

yeah Ings also good, perez to, point is there is LOADS of value at 5-6m mark for strikers. You could pick three of seven in honest.

Yes, without Kun most strikers seem to be created equal.

Question is how to get Kun in... Might be worth having an RVP shaped hole in the front line.

    Current team:

    Foster
    Zabaleta | Dummett | Hutton
    Sanchez | Hazard | Sigurdsson | Oscar
    Costa | Austin | Rooney

    Subs:
    Pantilimon | Marney | Wisdom | O'Shea

    1FT - 1.2

Thinking of Oscar - Silva, but then again i could use a extra transfer next week, to sort out some defensive problems. so maybe just cruise true the gameweek with an average score.

    Any input would be appreciated.

    Hart
    Zaba//Hutton//Naylor
    Haz//Sanchez//Downing//Silva(C)
    Austin//Tekkers//Costa

    McCarthy - Siggy - Clyne** - Moore

    1FT

Worth doing Moore > Trippier for extra cover if Zaba rotated?

    A) Moore > Trippier
    B) Save

It seems a lot of people are looking to use the WC are early as possible: do that many people have that much wrong with their team that they need to correct in so short a time (to paraphrase Churchill)?

ill be using it late as possible. I'd want 1 or 2 changes now at most

        Yer, same.

I'm not making a transfer this week, so will have two to play with in the coming weeks, if needs be.

Probably only need to replace Yaya.

    RVP - Costa - Austin

    1FT, 0.1 in bank

    Team for this week:

    Begovic
    Caulker, Zabaleta, Taylor
    Hazard, Silva, Sanchez, Sigurdsson
    Austin, Kane, Costa

    Subs: Pantilimon, Boyd, Clyne, Skrtel.

Skrtel getting banned messed me up. Should I do:

A: Skrtel to Terry. Can just afford it. 0 left in bank.
    B: Skrtel to Hutton
C: Save the transfer, meaning I have no defensive subs if one of my defenders doesnt play

    Any other suggestions?

The only defender you really need to worry about is Naylor as Caulker and Zab should both feature.

Naylor doesn't look like he'll be rested so I think you could get away with it this week. But if you do want to get a def then Skrtel to Tezza is a good call.

Is this looking good for New years day

    Green
    Zab, Janmat, Terry, Azpi,
    Sterling (c), Sanchez, Yaya, Downing
    Bony, Austin
subs: Krul, Kane, Eriksen, N Taylor

Is the bench looking good? I am expecting a CHE cleansheet and spurs scoring nil. Anyone with me?

Yeah looks decent, can see why youre hoping spurs dont score! Will be a nervy one for you 😉

You could spread some of the risk and play one of Eriksen or Kane instead of Azpil?

    Adrian
    Hutton-Vlaar/Trippier
    Sterling-Silva-Hazard-Downing
    Austin-Costa-Benteke

    Bench: Sanchez, Wisdom, Yun

Should I start Sanchez? If so who should I drop?

I don't know how you get him in, maybe Tekkers but looks like he'll be up top without Welbeck and Giroud

I'd play Sanchez over Downing...could be playong up top, so his points ceiling is much greater than Stuart Little's!

        Bench Costa and play Sanchez

    What to do?
    line up:

    pantili - krul
    chambers - touré - dummett - wisdom - azpi
    haz - sterling - silva - downing - sanchez
    kane - austin - costa
    1FT and 0.3m left

So i probably need to replace a defender with someone like Hutton? Or do I keep my FT cause i think all my defenders are going to play on NewYear. But i also like to WC real quick to get my defence in order.. But i also think it maybe wise to keep it longer for when Aguero returns..

    help! Thanks

Yaya to Silva or Eriksen to Sterling?

Or keep Yaya and Eriksen, I can bench Eriksen this week

Assume Yaya is fit when answering

I'll definitely be getting a defender of the team Pulis signs for, fixed Palace at the back nicely last year, did the same with Stoke a few years back and should do it again, when he takes over another PL club.
