Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 22 – Sunday

Santi Cazorla bags a goal and assist as Arsenal emerge victorious from the Etihad. Olivier Giroud also finds the net, whilst the Gunners’ defence keep Sergio Aguero at bay with a second successive shut-out. Earlier in the day, Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing are amongst the goals as West Ham register a comprehensive win over struggling Hull.

Cazorla Steers Gunners to Victory

The little Spaniard stole the show in yesterday’s stunning win at the Etihad by bagging a goal and assist in the 2-0 triumph. Whilst Alexis Sanchez had a rare off-day, Cazorla’s form continues to suggest he offers a viable double-up option alongside the Chilean in our starting line-ups – he’s now racked up five goals, two assists and 11 bonus points in his last eight appearances. Owned by just 3% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, the 8.2-priced playmaker has home clashes against Villa, Leicester and Everton, allied with trips to Palace and QPR in the next six, as the schedule smiles kindly on Arsene Wenger’s side.

Elsewhere in the Gunners attack, Olivier Giroud notched a fourth goal in five appearances to also come into contention ahead of the aforementioned run of fixtures. Also setting us back 8.2, the Frenchman is very much in the differential bracket, too – sitting in just 4% of FPL teams, he’s another who’s sure to come in for increased investment as Wildcards are wielded over the fortnight’s break from league action.

Arsenal Defence on the Up

It’s two clean sheets in as many matches for the north London side after nullifying the threat of Sergio Aguero and co. Given that last week’s home shut-out against Stoke was the Gunners’ first in seven attempts, little was expected from their defenders ahead of the Etihad visit but yesterday’s resilient display is sure to bring their backline onto our radars. With Mathieu Debuchy ruled out for three months, Wenger’s decision to select Hector Bellerin ahead of Calum Chambers at right-back is sure to pique our interest – at 4.4, he could be a real bargain if he can keep ahead of the summer signing, though David Ospina, at 4.8, also looks an option after getting the nod between the posts once again.

City Struggles in Toure’s Absence

With Vincent Kompany and Sergio Aguero back in the starting XI, much was expected of the champions – over 187,000 FPL managers drafted in the Argentine prior to the weekend deadline but his owners picked up no more than a single point, after he earned a late yellow card. Bearing in mind that City now travel to Stamford Bridge when league action resumes in two weeks’ time, the bandwagon may be temporarily slowed down until Gameweek 24. From that point on, Manuel Pellegrini’s troops host Hull, Newcastle and Leicester and also travel to Stoke and Burnley – by then, Aguero’s match sharpness will be fully up to speed and few will be willing to go without over such an enticing stretch of fixtures.

The champions have now failed to win any of their four league matches without Yaya Toure this season. Worryingly for Pellegrini, if the midfielder and new Etihad team-mate Wilfried Bony reach the Africa Cup of Nations final on February 8, they would likely miss the next three league matches, given that the Gameweek 25 trip to Stoke is on February 11.

Carroll and Downing Deliver

Sam Allardyce started with a 4-2-3-1 for yesterday’s clash against Hull, with Andy Carroll leading the line and Stewart Downing tucked in behind. A half-time switch to a midfield diamond saw the pair grab a goal apiece in an easy 3-0 win over the struggling Tigers – Carroll now has five strikes in his last eight, whilst Downing’s efforts took his tally to three goals and a pair of assists over the same period. Downing has now climbed into fourth spot in the FPL midfield standings on 116 points. but with showdowns against Liverpool, United, Southampton, Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal in the next seven Gameweeks, it remains to be seen how many of his 26% owners will keep the faith.

Tigers Toil Again

West Ham went into yesterday’s encounter with just a single clean sheet in the previous eight. With both their main forwards sidelined through injury, though, Hull were unable to take advantage of their hosts’ poor defensive form and drew yet another blank – alarmingly for Steve Bruce, his side have now failed to score in six of the last eight Gameweeks. Still stuck in the drop zone, Hull now have three vital home encounters (NEW, AVL, QPR) against sides in the bottom half of the table to boost their survival plight. Sone Aluko – classified as a midfielder in FPL and priced at 4.6 – led the line at Upton Park after recovering from a calf complaint and could offer Fantasy managers an out-of-position prospect, for those who believe Bruce’s side can profit from those upcoming matches.

    A) Giroud, Downing and Arfield

    or

    B) Berahino, Oscar and Puncheon (have no idea who to bench then, going with 433)?

If he wasn't in my team yesterday, my GW rank would probably be around 3M. Do u think Burnley can score against Sunderland?

How's this for a first WC draft? Lucky to be sitting in top500 so happy to go with template picks...

    Panti // 4.0
    Terry // Fonte // Bellerin // PVA // Baird
    Sanchez // Hazard // ADM // Puncheon // JWP
    Kun // Costa // Kane

Biggest question marks for me are:

    1) Fonte or Jones? United have great fixtures, Jones would save me a bit, and I could always get Alderweireld in when he's back. Going Jones over Fonte means I could keep Wisdom instead of Baird.

    2) ADM, worth it? Great fixtures but lacking sharpness

    3) Punchy+JWP as 4th and 5th mids, benching problems? For example, who to bench next GW, Puncheon(EVE) or JWP(SWA)? Better to lose JWP and get a bench fodder for 4.2-4.4?

    Thanks for any help!

I think you need to have some decent bench players for the second part of the season. There will be blanks and even rotation for Chelsea/Arsenal before important CL games. I like the team very much but would like to have two playing keepers.

Very similar to my current draft (although I think your value may be a bit above mine)

I have Koscielny, Fabregas, Chadli, Boyd, Giroud

to your Bellerin, ADM, Puncheon, JWP, Costa

If Bellerin nails his place that's a great choice - I'm being a little cautious at the moment. ADM could come into my thinking with those fixtures but the Man Utd attacking tactics have been so poor I just can't decide.

Good strength in depth in midfield - got to be a good thing even if benching problems occur.

      Great attack.

      I like it.

        Thanks for the reply!

I think I'm willing to risk it with Bellerin, even if he's rotated some GWs my other defenders should have good enough fixtures to cover that (although Baird is a risk).

Really torn on ADM myself, really hasn't done anything recently to justify investment but still, those fixtures and he has the point potential.

Are you going with just Panti or rotating keepers?

I may become persuaded of Bellerin's value before the deadline - until yesterday he wasn't in my thinking at all and it takes me time to adjust to new ideas 🙂 I guess I need to check out what the extra money would do for the rest of my team.

I've owned Rooney for the last couple of weeks hoping he could get me some quick pre-wildcard returns. It's brought the bizarre Man Utd formations into sharp focus for me (I wasn't paying enough attention before). If AdM is dropped back into his natural role he could run riot in the next few, I'm not sure I have the stomach to watch him fail though.

As it stands today I have Pantilimon/Mannone as my draft but I may cheap out even further and drop Mannone for a 4.0.

Still in the early stages of mulling all this over so it may change utterly of course!

TBH I wasn't even that interested in Arsenal defense before yesterday despite the fixtures 😀

I could see myself having some headaches for next 4GWs on who to bench, but after that it's more straight-forward IMO!

On the other hand, it's not really a problem to complain about if both have good fixtures 😀

You think it's worth the extra 0.5m for Boyd? Reality is I will never start him in that front 8, so as long as I have decent defensive bench cover I think Albrighton and 0.5m is perhaps the way to go.

I was thinking the same when it comes to 5th mid, but on the other hand GW27 with it blanks is not that far away and that's when you're gonna need your bench. If the favourites Chelsea and Spurs go to the C1C final you'll be missing Costa, Kane, Haz, Fab/Terry, Chadli and Albrighton

He hasn't outscored Austin or Cesc over the entire season (before this GW) around 5 and1.5m more expensive respectively which can be spent to massively upgrade the team. Expect some rotation when the big CL games come too. Drogba and Remy are capable to fill his shoes in the small games.

Another important point is: would you captain him over Hazard in the easy home games? I think most wouldn't.

There's room for Saints wide men and Oscar, Sturridge is a punt too far - won't be match fit even when back from injury, Aguero and Costa are far better picks until he's fully fit.

            Its not Costa vs Austin.

Its Costa vs Austin + Ings + Carroll + Berahino + whoever else comes to form.

The argument shouldnt be about whether Austin will outscore Costa, but whether you are willing to commit transfers to the position.

Not sure if there's been discussion on Bellerin and Ospina but my two pennorth is this:

            Ospina
Now his shirt to lose. Fill your boots.

            Bellerin
First choice - with occasional rotation to avoid burn out. Rotation likely to come away vs. physical sides. Worth the punt with a good back-up cheapie.

The only question for me is whether you will ultimately want your 3rd Arsenal spot tied up with Ramsey/Ozil/Walcott/Giroud with potential to become top picks for certain fixture runs; as with the CFC dilemma.

No, they under-studied injuries not dropped for lack of form and poor attitude.

If Bellerin starts ahead of Chambers again against Villa then he's coming in for me. Terry, Clyne, Bellerin, Wisdom, Hutton. Sorted.

Not as keen on him as I want Foster/Panti

Going with Bellerin, Caz and Sanchez on WC.. cant see myself gettin 3 attackers and the fact Chambers was gettin a lot of criticism and Bellerin started vs city away(and is a natural RB) is enough for me to get him in

I'm getting Ospina on my WC. Looks nailed for now.

Moreover the situation will be clear with him. Either he plays or gets dropped. Not like the Bellerin-Chambers situation where they get rotated all the time.

So fixtures mean one of chelsea and city will def have a blank in gw 27 then. If spurs get through then qpr will too.

could be no kane, austin and either costa/aguero that week then.....

Disaster of a GW, what are the chances of Di Maria, Sanchez, Silva, Hazard, Austin, Kane, Bertrand and Aguero all blanking the same weekend? ** takes deep breath and waits for next GW **

Faced with a dilemma here, would really appreciate your help. 🙂

So, just got back from Nepal and thought this was the last week to use your WC. So I brought in Downing and Trippier for a hit for some TV (for Cazorla and Debuchy) thinking I was gonna hit the button anyway, and could bring Cazorla back in if he smashed it against City.

Now I realise the fixtures aren't that great for a WC this week, and I don't have to play it this week.

Do I suffer the -4 and crap transfers or do I continue with the WC?

            Cheers
