Moving Target

Moving Target – Robert Huth

Leicester City have made further moves to patch up their generous defence by signing Stoke City centre-back Robert Huth on loan for the remainder of the season. The German’s arrival at the King Power Stadium follows the capture of elder statesmen Mark Schwarzer earlier in the window – a direct response to Kasper Schmeichel’s ongoing injury travails since he fractured his metatarsal at the beginning of December.

Discussing the competition for places in Leicester’s rearguard, the 30-year-old hopes his top-flight know-how will boost his chances of nailing down a regular role:

“I’m not expecting to walk into the team, I know I’ve got to prove my worth and hopefully I can do that. I’ve been around for a few years and played in Premier League. Sometimes it needs just a calm head on the pitch to maybe calm the players down and hopefully I can help. It’s not one ingredient that you need [the survive]. I think Leicester have pretty much got it sorted. They just need a bit of luck, clean sheets and a few goals would help obviously to make it a lot easier. We’re only three points off safety at the moment, so one win and we’re back in it.”

The History

Born in East Berlin, Huth plied his trade for two local youth sides (VfB Fortuna Biesdorf and 1. FC Union Berlin) before being offered a contract by Chelsea in 2001. The 6ft 3in centre-half made his debut for the Blues at the age of 17 – as a half-time substitute in the last match of the 2001-02 campaign – but struggled to cement a regular position in the heart of defence. Over a five-year stint at Stamford Bridge, he scored twice in 62 appearances, with the likes of John Terry and William Gallas favoured by Jose Mourinho.

Frustrated with a lack of first-team opportunities in London, Huth made the switch to Middlesbrough in August 2006 in a £6 million deal, having failed a medical earlier in the window. This early hiccup proved to be a sign of things to come, with persistent ankle complaints restricting the German international to a meagre 25 appearances during his first two seasons with the north-east outfit.

Middlesbrough’s relegation to the Championship in 2009 prompted Huth to switch back to the Premier League and after scoring twice in 63 appearances, he moved to Stoke in a four-year deal. A stalwart throughout his first four years for the Potters, Huth only mustered 12 league outings last season by virtue of two consecutive knee operations – nonetheless, his threat in the box saw him score 13 times in 149 league outings, with the highlight being a six-goal tally back in 2010/11.

The Prospects

Huth’s arrival at Leicester could well be set to threaten the starting role of centre-back Marcin Wasilewski – 4.0 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) option. Having played every minute of the last 14 Gameweeks, the budget defender currently boasts a 4.7% FPL ownership and has notched three seven-point hauls in his last five outings, registering two clean sheets and a goal against Manchester United in the process. The Krakow native’s tally of 36 points so far this season places him second among the stable of defenders priced 4.2 or below, only trailing Sunderland’s Patrick van Aanholt (39) courtesy of the Dutchman’s 12-point showing this weekend against Burnley.

Certainly, having started all but one of the opening 23 Gameweeks, club captain Wes Morgan will surely retain his position, so it remains to be seen whether Huth – who is suspended this weekend due to recent social media comments – is seen as an ideal partner for the Foxes skipper. His propensity for picking up niggling injuries and lack of pitch time (four minutes this term) are strong concerns, however, and with Matthew Upson and Liam Moore also in the mix, there’s no shortage of options for Nigel Pearson.

Priced at 4.7 in the FPL, Huth’s arrival at the King Power is compounded further by the demotion of shot stopper Ben Hamer (4.1) to the bench at Old Trafford on Saturday, with Mark Schwarzer’s installation further reducing the pool of viable bargain bucket defensive coverage.

With a mere four shut-outs accrued this season, it’s fair to say that Pearson’s side have failed to impress at the back: the basement-dwellers have conceded 37 times. Given that only Burnley (38) and QPR (42) have conceded more, few will be willing to invest in their prospects of defensive returns. Essentially, Jeffrey Schlupp’s out of position potential on the left of midfield remains the likeliest source of points amongst the Foxes defenders. With three goals to his name so far, the Ghana international has proved decent value at just 4.5 but with trips to Arsenal, Everton and City in addition to a blank Gameweek in the next five, their short-term prospects look bleak.

Things brighten considerably for the season run-in, however, with Pearson’s side facing likely crucial home encounters with West Ham, Swansea, Newcastle and QPR over an obliging end to the campaign. From Gameweek 31, Fantasy managers may well look on the Leicester rearguard more favourably, with the goal threat of Schlupp and perhaps even Huth coming under consideration.

Possibly. Against Villa he will be less worried about what his opponents know.

But look, it's very simple. Fabregas and Sanchez both had Grade 1 hamstring strains (the most minor) and the normal recovery time under sports physiotherapy is 1-3 weeks for that injury. Chelsea and Arsenal both have CL starting again soon and it's very important to them. The likelihood of them risking key players unnecessarily at this stage of the season is small, especially with this type of injury which tends to recur if stressed too soon.

A cautious approach will be taken with both players and they'll only play if they are fully fit. I'd have thought that was self-evident. I don't expect either to start this weekend, especially with another game to follow 3/4 days later.

Can't decide on who to bring in for Berty. Any thoughts on the following? Cheers

    A) Bellerin - cheap, with great fixtures coming up but stops me bringing in Giroud (have Caz/Sanch)
    B) Fonte /Clyne - solid choice but a bit meh.
    C) Naughton - cheap in an improving defence, but is he nailed on?
    D) dealers choice.

Current defence Terry, Le Scott, PVA, Trippier (Krul/foster)

Look at the price. No will want to afford Studge, Kun and Costa in one team. Throw Kane and Giroud in the mix, and there are a lot more options than now.

It will change a lot of teams. Which I think is good

I've been considering it all day and can't either. The thing is Spurs chances from open play and in the box, are really underwhelming. But they do keep scoring! Pens, freekicks, shots from outside the box... It doesn't seem like the kind of cohesive attacking play that will sustain goals imo - like you get with City, Chelsea and Arse... But at his price there's no one worth dropping for rn.

I'd drop for Austin at his old price actually.

Loads will get in Costa if he is present for the DGW. (whenever that falls for Chelsea),

I guess it will come down to Kun/Kane and then Costa/Sturridge.

Currently have Kun, Kane and Studge. Costa will be an option if one goes out of form or he comes back in form (at the expense of a Chelsea mid if Kane makes room).

      Aguero is an Injury risk
Costa is a risk to himself (discipline - card magnet)
Sturridge can be too greedy (he will get great opportunities with Sterling &,Coutinho)
Kane is a beast at the moment could be due a drop in form (or not get the service if Erikson gets injured).

Giroud form won't last. Arsenal midfield will outshine him.

Not everyone will have the same team, but they will all have a combination from the same pool of players. Top 5 forwards, Top 10 mid, Top 10 def and top 5 Gks.

Differentials, punts pay offs and pre band wagon selections will always the challenge whilst holding on the high scorers with high ownership.

Silva will be great this week but ADM is looking like my captaincy choice for 27

Takes big Cuadrados to captain ADM. I'm sure the big haul that everyone promises will come but he seems more likely to blank than score well at the moment.

I m on WC... Going with Aguero, Kane and searching for 3rd FWD... Everyone going with Girud, but I want to keep Sanchez and Cazorla... Even considerin keeping Austin as 3rd FWD... Any advice? Thanks!

I've got Aguero Giroud and Austin but Austin might become Defoe. My pigheadedness won't allow me to have a Spurs player. So maybe Defoe.

    Thoughts on DGW Plan?

    Currently own: Hazard & Eriksen

    GW24: Eriksen -> Oscar
    GW25: hold
    GW26: Pantilimon -> Lloris & Oscar -> Walters
    GW27: hold
    GW28: Walters -> Chadli & ADM -> Eriksen

Leaves me with Chadli, Eriksen & Lloris in DGW while only benching Lloris & Hazard in 27 when I have Foster in goal vs SOT

    1. Walsh

Wouldn't be too bothered to get in Lloris and I'm sure other things of more importance will crop up, but all in all that could work nicely provided Chelsea have their DGW later.

No Kane also is probably a silly risk.

          • 10 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

its walters -> Chadli or Pelle -> Kane, but Pelle is home vs Palace

I'm thinking of possibly tripling attack and going with all three of Kane, Eriksen, and Chadli. Seems to be the most explosive points potential down that avenue than to stick in someone like Rose or Lloris...especially since they are a pretty inconsistent and not so great in general defensive outfit.

              • 10 Years
              9 years, 4 months ago

That's true for explosivity but I don't really want to be holding on to Walters any longer than I have to and a 2 week punt fits the bill for me

        • 10 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

I said this to Ruth last night but was convinced you may as well plan anyway. I mean Eriksen -> Oscar then holding the next week looks like a solid first two steps regardless.

    Hazard Sanchez Silva Downing Boyd
    Aguero Giroud Defoe

    Cheers in advance

I wouldn't worry too much about no United. Jones is a decent pick at the back, but he's not necessarily better than any of your 5. None of the three strikers has really stepped forward as a consistently great option, which leaves Di Maria, who has some potential, but he and Silva are fairly close IMO.

As for the rest of it, I'd be a little concerned about Downing as a 4th mid. His fixtures are horrendous, and I heard he'd been dropped deeper with Nolan in the hole last time out. Maybe a swap to Mane depending on selling value?

I'd be surprised with Diouf back fit but Sparky has shown a willingness to throw Diouf on the wing. Who knows. Crouch lurks. Tough to move him off there after a hatty though that's for sure.
