Team Analysis – Assessing Pulis’ West Brom

Having delved into the new data in our members section to assess Alan Pardew’s impact on Crystal Palace, we make our way to the Midlands to see how Tony Pulis is shaping up as the new man in charge at West Brom.

With three clean sheets in five matches – compared to six in the opening 20 Gameweeks – Pulis has helped his new side register two wins and a couple of draws, with only a home loss to in-form Tottenham dashing our Fantasy faith. In terms of personnel, we’ve seen Andre Wisdom shuffled onto the Baggies bench, with Chris Brunt utilised as a left-back and record signing Brown Ideye finally finding his form. Similarly, Saido Berahino, with seven goals in eight appearances in all competitions, has been transformed in recent weeks after falling out of Alan Irvine’s first-team plans. As the Midlands side brace themselves for some kind upcoming fixtures, we cast an eye over the numbers for signs of the so-called “Pulis effect”.

Hmm... wondering whether WBA's apparent defensive improvement under Pulis isn't actually due to the relatively easy fixtures they've had in the last five, compared to playing all teams in the league, and thus also the tougher opponents, in the first 20.

Yep, a bit. but Pulis DOES have a knack for it. And I remember an interview with Berahino where he was saying that since Pulis had come in they had focused their whole team training on defence, from front to back, which must be rubbing off.

But does he? Check the numbers. The effect is not massive. We should also check how much these teams have got shots inside the box, from set pieces, and big chances during that same period, GW's 21-25? Just in the shots inside the box table, 3 of these 5 teams have been at the bottom of the table, 1 is a mid-table club, and only Burnley is at the top of the table who have got an extremely easy schedule (QPR, CPL, sun, WBA, mun) - and they got 7 shots inside the box against WBA.

          Nice number crunching!
You're probably more right than I am here; I am basing my speculation purely on memory (which gets a little distorted by over-use of the term 'Pulis effect'). It does seem (from memory) that when Pulics has joined a team they just sure up at the back. Look at Crystal Palace after he arrived, and Stoke after he left. I have zero stats to back this up, other than that I remember these teams conceding fewer under Pulis.

      Crystal Palace 2013-14 pre-Pulis: 10 games 0 clean sheets

I know that, and exploited it back then like everybody else, but that was then, this is now. The change with WBA doesn't seem immense and it could be completely explained by easy fixtures: HUL, eve, TOT, bur, SWA. Only Tottenham is even half difficult, and they smashed Pulis's WBA. Well, arguably Burnley too, it seems, but they had more than their fair share of chances against WBA too. The last 3 are just about the shitest attacking units of the whole league of recent.

With Kane's form Tottenham maybe one of the worst teams to try to get a clean sheet against now.

WHU has been one of the weakest teams for some while now. Rest on high conversion rate and low conceding rate that are unsustainable, and still not getting results for over 10 matches now.

Thanks a lot, I'm trying something similar, we have an As Roma fan at work, who suggested that moreless the only good option is Gervinho and the rest of the team aren't that good for fantasy football.

Generally his toughts are that Roma aren't playing well for the past two months and always tend to concede, with both Manolas and Holebas he said they are good defenders, just he expects them to concede.
As for scoring chances he sees Holebas as someone who could get some points.

As for midfield the best rated midfielder Nainggolan isn't really a fantasy one, but more of a Makelele type. Pjanic is having a bad season and the rest are questioanble.
Florenzi is a great option as he does play as a winger at times, but he also plays other positions and might end up on the bench.

Up top it's Gervinho who plays all the time, the rest get rested/dropped at points.
Overall he didn't seem to trust his team too much.

My take is that I need to find out how good/ bad Feyernoord is and make a decision based on that. Personally I'd go Gervinho and Manolas/Holebas and that's about it. Would be worried about a clean sheet though.

I can afford Silva > Toure. Should I do it, just because I can? It would be a bit of a differential. Is he likely to play? This would be my team this week:

    Foster
    Ivanovic, Clichy, PVA
    Hazard, Toure, Eriksen, Cazorla
    Kane, Aguero, giroud

    Subs: Krul, Mane, Bellerin, Naughton

Yes, I'd still have two free transfers for next week. Got no injury worries or anything, though.

I'm now considering getting Lloris in instead of Toure! Another player not in for GW27, but ensures I'd have three double'ers in gw28. then I would just have to worry about getting ivanovic out next week

He got an assist in only 8 minutes of gametime away at Upton Park earlier in the season, and he's the most in form player in the league, I'll take my chances he can still produce the goods after about 60 or 70 hours of rest.

Let me get this straight.. So at the moment the current mass thinking is that:

SANCHEZ is a better option than OZIL, who is a better option than CAZORLA, who is a better option than WALCOTT...

    Correct?

Walcott is the man if he plays. At least, that is my opinion. Might be worth a punt.

It is the gametime which is the concern with Walcott not his ability imo

That is probably the correct order. Ozil is looking good and is cheaper though

Walcott is the best, followed by Ozil, followed by Alexis, followed by Santi

I would maybe agree in terms of points per minutes, but it'd probably rank them the opposite way around in terms of who will get the most minutes per season..

Defoe, Jones, Wisdom. All problems. 6.1m in the bank. No FT's.

    What would you do?

Aye, just wondering who would be priority out first. Probably Defoe...chance of more gains points wise.

      6.1m itb? :O

Is your defence ok without Jones and Wisdom?
Or would you be screwed if Defoe doesn't play?
Do you mind spending all of your money or do you want to hold onto it?

Defoe -> Sturridge/Costa could be a lovely "mini-differential" this week

Yeap, Costa > Giroud > Defoe has left me with lots of money.
Without Jones and Wisdom, I only have Clyne and Van Anholt 🙁
Could spend it all, and as you say Sturridge could be a good punt!

Only want to take one hit.

Start Hutton (STO) or Fonte (LIV) this weekend?

I'm already starting Clyne as well but I don't mind doubling up, leaning towards Fonte at the moment.

Personally i dont think its about being rested. I think Ozil Sanchez and Cazorla are ahead of him right now. Who would he replace? Ozil and Caz put in effort defensively, I just dont think itd be wise to play Palace away with

      Walcott Sanchez Ozil/Caz
      Giroud

So imo Walcott sits on the bench.
