Captain Sensible – Gameweek 26

Our pre-Gameweek members article which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Eden Hazard (26%) leads the way in a closely-contested race this week. The Belgian has managed just two assists in his last four at Stamford Bridge but will fancy his chances of returning to form – visitors Burnley have conceded at least two goals in each of their last six road trips. With that in mind, it’s perhaps surprising that only 17% have opted for Diego Costa – the Spain international has found the net in eight of his nine home appearances so far.

Sergio Aguero is just behind Hazard on 25%. The City striker ended his goal drought with a brace against Stoke last time out and is expected to recover from a minor back problem to welcome Newcastle to the Etihad. With Yaya Toure back on board and Samir Nasri and David Silva both in form, the Argentine will be looking to improve upon a surprisingly poor home record – Aguero has found the net in just three of nine outings in front of his own fans.

Despite serving up five double-figure hauls in the last eight, Harry Kane is backed by only 11% of Fantasy managers as Spurs welcome West Ham to the Lane. Sam Allardyce’s side have managed a single away clean sheet all season and will struggle to keep their hosts at bay, as Mauricio Pochettino’s side look for a morale boost prior to next weekend’s Capital One Cup final against Chelsea.

With that quartet hogging most of the votes, there are a number of differential candidates for those willing to gamble with the armband. Romelu Lukaku is backed by just under 4% at home to a Leicester defence that has shipped at least two goals in eight of their last nine road trips, whilst Arsenal trio Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud have been largely overlooked ahead of a visit to Palace.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Chelsea wouldn't accept the 8th, too close to PSG on the 11th. 7th was possible but I think if that was happening it would have been announced by now.

Not impossible but not likely now as far as I can tell. There has been nothing on the Chelsea website or on Chelsea TV to suggest it's even being discussed right now. I wouldn't be surprised if they look at it after the PSG 2nd leg - whether they progress in the CL or not will affect when they want it to be.

Folks some advice please, I'm fairly stuck & thinking my best bet might be erikson to yaya.
I have 4.5 in the bank

    Panti,
    Terry, PVA, Fonte
    Sanchez, Carzola, Erikson, Hazard
    aguero, Kane, Gayle

    Given, Walters, Baird, Yun

Also play Gayle or Walters? I'm on Walters at the moment

                Maybe pigs can fly.

And I'm talking about football, not fantasy football. Kane (and Spurs) had one of those days where everything went in. Kane scored 2 worldies from outside the box. When I say he got lucky I don't mean he isn't very talented, in fact it was that game that finally convinced me he is the real deal. I just mean that the perfect constellation of that game for Spurs and against Chelsea won't be repeated very often.

Fair enough but forward for the price he is talking about I think you could do a lot worse. Ings has performed in most of his recent games including away at united and against West Brom with Pulis.

Fair enough too. But with Chelsea, Liverpool and Soton away plus City and Spurs at home in Burnley's next 6 games I couldn't recommend any Burnley player right now, even Ings.

I'd rather take a punt on Sherwood getting more out of Benteke myself. Villa do have good fixtures and Benteke has the talent if not the recent form.

          Thoughts on :

          Gw27 : Oscar > Ibe
          Gw28: Boyd > Eriksen

          Leaving :

          Sanchez Hazard Eriksen Moses Ibe

Would be hoping Ibe plays Gw27 home to City otherwise will be playing with 10 men

If i do Oscar to any other mid gw27, it means a -4 minimum to get Eriksen for the dgw the following week , got a strong back 5 that will cover Boyds supersub role if they should be called upon

Hazard v Kun for the armband is so tough. I was pretty set on Haz before Mou said that he hadn't trained prior to the PSG game, and rumours around here about Burnley concede more goals from forwards and defenders (they concede a lot from set pieces).

Even though Kun may only play 70-80 minutes if City are up at least he'll be fully fresh and ready. Only thing I'm worried about is Bony's impact on him, do you think Bony will start?

Yeah I'd say your right, I meant more the fact that Bony may 'steal' some of Aguero's space, similar to the way Dzeko does when he plays with Kun.

yeah but I think that just means Aguero has that much more of a chance for assists..and for strikers that's a difference of a point only

Hmm I guess you could be right, but theres a big difference in the BAP system too (9 for an assist, 24 I think for a striker's goal)

Kun said a while ago his best position is just behind the main striker but close enough to have a good partnership, which is the intention with Bony I'd imagine.

Yeah. As I said above though, I'm worried with Bony in the fact that he'll use Kun's space and Bony is another big potential goalscorer, meaning Kun may have less of a % involvement in City's goals.

Kun operates best , fantasy football perspective , upfront on his own imo with Silva behind him but that rarely happened tbf . He will remain the focal point of Cities attacks regardless of who is on the pitch I can't see him becoming Silva if that is your worry

I agree with your first sentence.

I'm not worried about him playing in the hole. I'm worried that Bony offers another great offensive option for City, so he might be getting chances in the spaces where Kun would be if Kun was playing up top by himself.

Perfectly valid and I agree, however, City are not as free flowing offensively when Aguero is lone striker compared to those times last season when they had two strikers up top and were scoring for fun. Even though he may have less % of goal involvement there should be more goals to go around and more assist opportunities as well for him so it is six of one half dozen of another. Either way, he's explosive and a beast.

Well I am torn. I may get Costa in although that means a -4 later. But it also means a free choice of strikers to replace him again in GW 27. If I believed Rooney would play upfront I'd go for it and switch to Rooney next week.

If I don't do that it will be Aguero for sure.

                    Yeah, fair enough.

Not sure I'd get Costa in just for Burnley at home (especially as it means a hit later), not sure if you watched it but he looked very average and not match fit against PSG.

Of course I watched it. 😉 He has had 3 enforced weeks out and he can't have been match fit in that game. But it will sharpen him up a lot and Burnley at Stamford Bridge are a quite different proposition to PSG in Paris.

PS I shouldn't be helping someone I want to overtake 😉 but for what it's worth I think you are right to be slightly wary of Hazard right now. He has played nigh on 40 games in all competitions already this season and that on the back of a long World Cup run in the summer. I watch Chelsea regularly and to my eyes he's beginning to show signs of wear.

He's incredibly talented and he's young so you can never discount him. Plus he has pens of course. But I wouldn't be inclined to captain him at the moment myself.

He's not really that explosive from a fantasy perspective end of. Still not sure why he is so highly regarded as a captaincy option but such is life on here. When was the last time he had a brace from open play? Last season that hat trick game? If he doesn't get a penalty he's not going to have a huge return most likely. I guess he's "safe" for a 6-10 pointer if he gets the single goal or an assist which ensures him bonus points but whatever, I want 15 point captains 😀

Well, yes. This GW anyway. Some weeks I'd be happy with a fairly assured 8-10 pointer and Hazard tends to get good BAPS even with one assist.

But this GW if you just look at Costa, Aguero and Kane you can pretty much rely on it that at least one of them will be in the 12-15 range I think. And Arsenal have a decent fixture too.

Did anyone else who started playing fantasy seriously kinda notice how it makes you learn alot more about football in general.

If I didn't use this site or play it I don't think i'd have realised how almost everything went through siggy or how important form is in terms of results (think newcastle in november ish) and certain teams playing really well against a particular other team think palace v tottenham in both games or even spurs record away to Swansea. Formations as well I mean look liverpool went from their crap to pretty dammed decent now that everything clicks with the exact same players.

Also that fantasy is addictive as hell.

I think most people overvalue how important form is in terms of results

You say Newcastle in November, but where do you set the start and end dates?

If Newcastle scoring 15 points in 5 games means they are in great 'form', why did they then score 13 points in the next 13 games.
If they were in bad form for the first 7 games of the season, why did they then win 5 straight e.t.c.

The reality is IMO, they just happened to arrange 5 wins in a row rather than spreading out their results more evenly.

Well they did happen to beat Chelsea at home and City away in the cup in their nice run of games they had, I don't think that's something to be undervalued. They were terrific both times!

You would dare bench the White Cafu ? . An early fixture vs Stoke looks like a guaranteed snorefest and Palace have improved dramatically under Pardew and Bellerin might still start

Need some surgery, willing to take a hit aswell. What should I do? Jones was going to be my first trade for Bellerin, but there are doubts that he will play this weekend.
