The Digest – Gameweek 26

We cast an analytical eye over last weekend’s fixtures this afternoon, evaluating the evolution of City’s fleet-footed No. 10, Liverpool’s defensive fortitude on their travels and the blank Gameweek headache.

The Player

David Silva’s brace in Manchester City’s 5-0 humbling of Newcastle city underlined his heightened goal threat this season. This is the first campaign in the Spanish playmaker’s Premier League career that he’s notched more goals (nine) than assists (seven); it’s also already his most profitable season in front of goal, eclipsing the seven strikes he accrued last term.

Among the highest scoring midfielders in the league this season, the former Valencia star’s nine-goal haul puts him on par with Christian Eriksen and Eden Hazard, and three shy of Alexis Sanchez’s 12 – although, it’s worth noting that Silva has clocked at least 330 fewer minutes than each of these competitors.

In light of Yaya Toure’s return from the African Cup of Nations, many Fantasy managers would have earmarked the Ivorian as the premier route into the Champions midfield – a fair deduction given his streak of six goals in eight appearances before international duty beckoned. However, Toure’s inferior tally of goals (seven) and assists (one) in near-identical minutes to Silva, and weightier price tag (10.7 to 9.4) has thrown up an interesting contest between the pair.

Certainly, pinpointing coverage for Manuel Pellegrini’s side has been afforded greater importance by the absence of numerous high-ownership players next Gameweek. With Chelsea and Tottenham’s blank forcing many managers to bench their big-hitters and field less illustrious back-ups, it’s no surprise to see that Silva has been granted an upsurge in new owners – over 31,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have already drafted him in since his 17-point haul against Newcastle, far more than any other player so far.

For now, Silva sits eighth among his midfield counterparts in the Fantasy ownership stakes, having been selected by 19% of managers but one look at the fixtures suggests that could be set to rise further. Although City’s next match-up – a trip to Anfield to face a resolute Liverpool defence – is potentially tricky, the following four fixtures (LEI, bur, WBA, cry) could see Silva wreak havoc as the champions chase down Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea at the top of the table.

The Team

After shipping 16 goals in their first eight away league matches, Liverpool have now recorded five clean sheets on the road for the first time in 30 years. The Merseysiders are unbeaten in ten and have accumulated 23 points out of a possible 27 in their previous nine fixtures as Brendan Rodgers’ side make a belated claim for a top four finish.

This feat is made all the more impressive when you consider that Rodgers has fielded the likes of Lazar Markovic and Jordon Ibe as wing-backs in a 3-4-2-1 formation, balancing the conflicting requirements of width and defensive cover. Liverpool will do well to maintain their newfound defensive resilience as they embark on a run of fixtures (MCI, BUR, swa, MUN, ars) that includes three of the Premier League’s current top four, though with Martin Skrtel in imperious form and Emre Can’s addition proving crucial at the back, there seems little doubt they can prevail. Frustratingly, Rodgers’ decision to bench Alberto Moreno at St Mary’s has lessened his appeal, though, and with Can classified as a midfielder, Skrtel looks the safest option here.

The Reds have been impressive going forward, too, netting five in their last two outings, but Daniel Sturridge’s restoration as a viable high-cost forward will have to wait a little longer – the former Chelsea striker wasn’t named in the starting line-up, having featured in their midweek Europa League clash against Benfica.

With attacking returns in two of his last four league appearances, Philippe Coutinho (7.7) edges ever close to relevancy in the mid-priced midfielder bracket, though fellow weekend scorer Raheem Sterling (8.4) has served up returns in five of his last seven now and, as evidenced by their 2-0 win at St Mary’s, the Reds have the form at both ends of the pitch to trump any fixture right now.

The Talking Point

One look at the ownership levels in the FPL game highlights the issues caused by Gameweek 27 blanks for the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham and QPR. Two of the top four defenders (Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry), three of the top six midfielders (Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas and Christian Eriksen) and three of the top five forwards (Harry Kane, Diego Costa and Charlie Austin) are all affected, handing Fantasy managers a real weekend headache.

Heading into a double Gameweek 28, Spurs’ involvement in crucial domestic and European cup ties leaves us with rotation doubts. Allied to this, the north Londoners face two relatively kind fixtures in their double, so you’d expect boss Mauricio Pochettino to possibly rest a select few during the league ties. Whilst Kane’s 12 goals in 11 outings makes him virtually undroppable, Pochettino’s decision to bench Eriksen against the Hammers yesterday clearly backfired and will surely persuade his manager to start with the Dane as the north London club attempt to get their bid for a top four finish back on track.

With regards to Chelsea coverage, few will want to cash in on the FPL’s leading defender (Ivanovic) or midfielder (Hazard), though Costa may be deemed dispensable as more look to the in-form Aguero as an alternative, with the Argentine finding his stride again.

With our benches set to be fully tested, our struggle to field 11 active players has been further compounded by the declining favour of budget defenders like Patrick van Aanholt and Andre Wisdom, with the latter still sitting third (20.3%) among defender ownership rankings. Balancing our squads and keeping points hits to a minimum looks a tricky task, then, and navigating the options to ensure we take advantage of the next two Gameweeks could well prove critical to many a mini-league success.

in a pretty good position for next week with regards to fielding 11.

    Heaton

    hutton clyne kosc TERRY

    silva di maria puncheon ELIA

    Aguero Defoe

    pants kane hazard Baird

    2FT 4.2 ITB

Think i've rode my luck without sanchez for long enough and an arsenal attacker looks pretty essential this week

    Terry, elia > Dawson, sanchez

Good transfers or are there other better options?

Not what I'd do at all. No need to lose Terry, you have room on the bench. Baird to Dawson is good.

It would also make sense to upgrade Elia but I wouldn't choose Sanchez. Maybe Ozil? Or wait a week and replace him with Eriksen.

What do you fine chaps think of this wildcard team? 🙂

    Forster, Hamer
    Terry, Koscielny, Wollschied, Naughton, Haidara
    Sanchez, Hazard, Silva, Cazorla, Boyd
    Aguero, Kane, Ings

With Ings --> Austin this coming week.

If I get Ings, I may well roll the dice with him if I don't chicken out and revert to Alexis or Kun (c).

I'll probably pessimistically captain Aguero... almost to hedge my bets as I'm a 'pool fan 🙂

There isn't much jumping out at me this week but I feel just having Ings is enough of a differential in itself!

Depending on news re: Toby AlderW and European games, what are people's thoughts on:

    [2 free]
    GW27: Baird -> Toby

Or do people not think Rose will play both games given he'll likely start the League Cup final?

For this week I have two FTs but all 4 of Ivanovic, Kane, Eriksen, and Hazard. To field 11 players I need to transfer out at least 1 of these players.

In my squad I also have Baird & PVA seemingly unsure of selection.

Kane & Eriksen are so essential for the week after next that I can't bring myself to transfer either out.

I don't really want to transfer Hazard out either. I'd lose 0.3 if I were to sell and bring straight back in. WIth Ivanovic [who I suppose I'd view as being marginally more essential longer term] the equivalent loss would be only 0.1.

My choice [assuming no 4 pt hit] is between:

    (a) sell Baird and PVA [my 0.8 ITB means I'd be able to get a couple of guys who I'd be able to count on starting], accept that I'll only field 10 players for this week; or
    (b) sell Baird + Ivanovic, hope that PVA gets some gametime & therefore that I'll be able to field a full XI.

    Thoughts??

The harder I look the more I'm resigned to (a), really. Starting prospects for those two budget defenders are just too weak.

had sanch for months. figured his injury was a good excuse to get rid. nervous yes, regretting my decision to sell, no. other good options in that bracket and with the CL starting again and players returning from injury, i figure he'll see some rotation as well.

Sanchez WAS explosive. In any case what does one game matter unless he's your captain. Points per £1m per game is the calculation that counts. Sanchez is no value anymore.

Alexis will be explosive again. He is still the #1 FPL player in terms of points per game (6.5). He is no longer injured. After the Palace game, Wenger said he is now fully fit and finding his rhythm, he should have scored.

                Blah blah blah.

His points were scored when Ozil, Walcott and (for much of the time) Giroud were injured. Now they are all back. He's no longer the focal point of everything and if you look at Arsenal's fixture schedule it seems unlikely that he will start every game now that there are other very good options.

I understand your price justification concern but Alexis doesn't need to be the focal point to score goals. He scored 21 goals last season, playing alongside Messi and Neymar.

He is an Energizer bunny and provided that he is fully fit, he will keep on banging those goals.

IMO he is the Arsenal midfielder to have long term and the money will not be better placed elsewhere in my team. I would much rather captain him over Ozil and I do not like to rely on penalties.

Other than the ones we know about, are there any more blanks or DGW's likely or could that be it?

All the teams in the FA Cup semis will miss GW33, as well as their opponents in 33. They'll probably be in GW34, possibly GW37 but that's less likely.

*probably be rearranged in GW34. If Utd make it to the semis, it gets more complicated because then Chelsea will have 2 games to be rearranged.

It's not complicated at all. Leicester-Chelsea is GW 34. If United make the semis the Chelsea-United game will be GW 37.

      Sterling and sanchez

Think Sturridge over sterling. But sanchez over Ozil

Thoughts on Hazard -> Sterling this week ?

Most people using their FT on getting rid of PvA / Baird / Wisdom for Haidara / Lescott / Bruce(?). Instead, maybe there's more upside to getting in Raheem for the next couple of weeks ? Can keep him for 3 GWs and bring Haz in for the hull game. Will lose around 0.4 in value though

Yeah keeping seems like the sensible option, but Haz next 3 reads : blank, whu, SOT
Sterling next 3 goes : MCI, BUR, swa

With the price saving sterling offers, it might be worth taking a 0.4 loss in value ..

      Foster/ Panti

Terry Clyne Hutton Wollscheid Van Aanholt

Sanchez Hazard Di Maria Cazorla Boyd

      Aguero Defoe Kane

I used one of my FT's this week to bring in wollscheid for wisdom.

Should I go Hazard to Sterling/Silva this week with my other FT and then do Caz to Eriksen and Defoe to Austin for a -4 next week?

Or do I just bench Haz this week and do the latter for free next week?

Madness to sell Eriksen to Silva so I can field 11 and likely not bring him back for the double?

In my opinion Eriksen wont play all 4 games. Cup final and Europa is surely more important.. They can beat qpr without him.

Meanwhile after the Liverpool game Silva has amazing fixtures.

      Thoughts?

      Current team:

      Panti, (hamer)

      pva, Koscielny, Ivanovic, (wisdom, robertson(hull)

      Mane, Haz, Sanchez, Blind (colback)

      Kane, Costa, Aguero

              Forster (Jakupovic)

              Clichy, Wisdom, Janmaat (Berty, Wasilweski)

              Caz, Blind, Hazard, Eriksen (elmohamady)

          I did say pickle, didn't ?
I guess there's no WC up your sleeve?
you've 4 0r 5 players that may not play added to your 4 Chel/Tott non players. Hmmm, I'd hold on to the 4 Ch/To players and try and put a band aid over the rest.
Wisdom, Robertson & Colback would be the 3 to go for me to fix your team long term.
Wollscheid, Haidara, Ki or Cork (4.3m) might be the way to go although it's looking like a painful week. 4pt hit needed, maybe 8 but not convinced that will give you a return as you're looking at the budget end.
Could take Costa out but I'd keep.

            You did!

            No WC.

Totally agree with Wisdom, Robertson & Colback - Robertson and Colback were just bargain back ups. Wisdom was and has been in my team since GW1 but doesn't seem to be getting a game under Pulis.

What would you think of sacrificing Sanchez to upgrade some other poorer players or is that suicidal??

Think i'm in for a hard week

2FT want to use one. Would you rather:
      A) Swap PVA out for Naughton (long term move)
      B) Swap Puncheon out for Moses/Walters (short term move as will get Mane in soon)
