Dugout Discussion

The Dugout Discussion – Swansea vs Liverpool

A dire Gameweek 29 limps to its conclusion this evening as Swansea and Liverpool go head-to-head at the Liberty. Brendan Rodgers returns to his former club having guided the Reds to a 12-match unbeaten run since moving to a 3-4-2-1 formation and the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge have the chance to get amongst the points against a defence with a single shut-out in six in front of their own fans.

At the back, the visitors have been a consistent source of clean sheets in recent matches. The Merseysiders have kept out their opponents in six of the last eight Gameweeks and have Martin Skrtel available after the Slovakian recovered from a head knock that forced him off on a stretcher against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup stalemate last time out. Mamadou Sakho also returns as one of three centre-backs as Dejan Lovren drops to the bench. Rodgers has made further changes in the wing-back roles, with Glen Johnson and Lazar Markovic dropping to the bench: Alberto Moreno is recalled on the left while Raheem Sterling looks to be deployed on the right.

The hosts, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back from their 3-2 loss at Spurs in Gameweek 28. Prior to that defeat, Garry Monk’s men had registered back-to-back victories and earned three points in their previous match at the Liberty, courtesy of a 2-1 win over United.

Gylfi Sigurdsson was back in the goals last time out and has the upcoming fixtures to earn himself a place in our five-man midfields again, whilst Ki Sung-Yeung has notched three times in the last five and, at 5.1 in FPL, is staking a claim as a cheap budget option.

The teamsheet finds Monk forced into one change as Jordi Amat comes in for Federico Fernández who misses out for family reasons. Up front, Bafetimbi Gomis is available to lead the line after recovering from his collapse at White Hart Lane in the previous Gameweek.

For those with the Krul/Panti combination and a WC available, considering Sunderland have a blank Gw33, and Krul has (TOT), going off Newcastle's defensive woes of late and Spurs' attacking threat. Have any of you considered a one week GK punt before you WC? I know I at least have a pretty low TV (22 inches) of 105.5m and will have the exact finds for my ideal WC team come the DGW, so I'm willing to go with one cheap keeper Gw34 onwards.

So that said, would this be a viable strategy for you guys? If you conjure up 2 FT's and use them for Gw33, and if you want to plan accordingly for said GW, perhaps using that FT for one the teams with the best defensive fixtures isn't such a bad idea after all. Thoughts?

Very specific set of circumstances you outlined there, mate. I'd opt with a no on that one. There is such low upside with points potential by taking a pre-WC punt on a goalkeeper when you could rather use it on an outfield player.

      1. Zasa
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

Aye, you're probably right here. This is a pretty specific situation in the sense that if I plan accordingly and use my next 5 FT's wisely, I could afford to put out my ideal XI for Gw33 and have one FT leftover to play around with and the only spot the would be less than ideal for me would be GK that week.

But yeah, this is probably a daft idea as I never advocate GK transfers, just thought...maybe this once 🙁

pre WC punt on whoever you want 😆 but surely youll have an outfield player better suited for a punt

        9 years, 3 months ago

        Haha 😀
I think this plan is prone to backfire, mainly because this is all reliant on me using my next 5 FT's perfectly and bar any injuries. Basically building my "scout picks" if you will from here on to Gw33, but yeah perhaps better to assume injury than to plan for low ceiling GK trannie 😆

My green arrows of late are due to pure luck I think (especially the Giroud C this week). My defence is rubbish and without getting rid of a big midfielder I just don't know what to do.

    Defence is

    Foster - Hamer
    Bellerin - Jones - PVA - Bertrand - Baird
    0.8 ITB
    2ft's

Jones or PVA out for Zouma??
Foster injury for more than a week would mean I'd get Ospina in, but need to sell Bellerin

    Rest of the team is
    Sanchez-Hazard-Eriksen-Silva-Boyd
    Kane-Giroud-Kun

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    1. BeachBadger

Dont get Zouma. Will be rotated and you'll want 3 solid chelsea players for the double

You need to get someone more nailed than Zouma I think. Hmm - I'd probably look at using your two frees in replacing Jones and Baird, but you have quite a problem with Foster....might have to blow one on getting him out depending on the news. I'd be looking at Jones out for Toby as one transfer and then either Foster out for someone or Baird out for someone.

I would do if I could. I'm thinking about captaining Alexis. I feel like I'm starting to lose the plot a little right now on my season as I seem to have a terribly template attack which is very unlike me.

Not at his best tbh, sloppy on the ball, lacked a good touch and just in general didn't look as "hungry" compared to these past few games. To be fair, he did make a great pass to Hendo for his assist, and come the end of the match hit the post on a 1v1. Much of this has to do with the overall display of Swansea though, their midfield showed great tenacity today and hardly let Pool in the box the first half.

He was great in the first half, created chances and got a couple of great shots in near the box, was lucky Migs was on his A-game today or else that would have gone in on a normal day. Was largely anonymous the second half though when BR made the necessary changes in midfield and Pool finally gained a foothold in the midfield, nearly invisible the final 45 tbh.

    Foster, Krul
    Ivan, Fonte, Bellerin, Rose, Haidara
    Hazard, Sanchez, Eriksen, Mane, Boyd
    Kun, Kane, Giroud

    2 FT, - 1.1 ITB

worst GW I've ever had of 24.

As a Liverpool fan though I can't help but be happy that we've found a way to win ugly, it's a shame we didn't manage to win some more games we deserved just before this run of good form.

If we manage to come out of the games with UTD and Arsenal without losing we have the upper hand with the fixtures for the rest of the season. Only Chelsea to play and they might have all but won the league by then.

Looks like 26 is the safety score in Last Man Standing.

High chance of dropping to 25 if I can find 2 above who fall below 25 with hits.

Nice. Looks like 148 left with 55 out this week & 26 the safety score.
        17 managers got 25.
May need to slow down the % out next week as over 25% went out this week it seems. 😆

    Clyne / Ivan / Pva
    Haz / Sanchez / Erik / SIlva
    Kane / Kun / Austin
    (Krul / Walters / Bruce / Wasi)

    1 FT & 0.2m itb
    A) Save FT
    B) Pva -> Naughton
    C) Sanchez & Austin -> Mane/Ozil & Giroud

    1. Zasa

B, IMO that backline is stretching it then and you need a better 3rd defender for sure. Long term, I'd look at dropping Walters or findidng a way to free funds probably to invest in your backline tbh, Bruce and Was just aren't going to cut it, the former not a great 4th defender and the latter not even playing.

      1. Who Ate All Depays?
        • 10 Years

actually my plan is to get a decent 3rd ded and downgrade Walters over next 2 gws so not sure whether to save ft this week

Agree with Zasa about the funds. Maybe do Walters downgrade now and upgrade defense next week. Actually probably save and do both next

            • 9 Years
            9 years, 3 months ago

Actually that may be better aye, considering Villa performance, it may be better to play PvA vs Hammers and invest in a heavy hitter in place of him next week. Naughton could always wait to come in for Wasi the following week when Swansea play Hull at home.

            1. Zasa
              • 9 Years
              9 years, 3 months ago

*woops, you only have 1 FT. Guess you'd have to save in that case for next week mate, looks like you'll to measure whether you want instant gratification in your defense now in Naughton, and downgrade Walters when you have 2 FT's to also upgrade Wasi

or you could save now, play PvA and downgrade Walters and upgrade Wasi next week to a better defender/heavy hitter

          2. Who Ate All Depays?
            • 10 Years

agree with you mate...if i do Walters downgrade this week then I'll be wasting my FT as most probably I won't play the 5th mid

        2. Zasa
          • 9 Years
          9 years, 3 months ago

I'd get the third def now, PvA to Naughton is not only a good transfer long term, but it also serves you very well now as Swans just put on a great overall display vs Pool defensively and face Villa away (albeit their attack looked top notch vs Sunderland)

on a second thought, how about the following moves?
            A) Sanchez & Austin -> Ozil/Mane & Giru (-4)
            B) Walters & Wasi/Pva -> Cork & Toby (-4)

            1. Zasa
              • 9 Years
              9 years, 3 months ago

Poor moves IMO not from me, that's a stern no from me mate
I think those moves are debacle for 2 FT's but not in your position tbh. Perhaps A if you're a true maverick, but it's just very risky and if you don't have a WC you may be shooting yourself in the foot getting in more Arsenal attack whilst you still have PvA, Wasi, and Bruce blanking Gw33.

I think you should play it safe here and save, your backline is a real concern right now and will leave you in a tight spot come Gw33. With 2 FT's, if you want to play more aggressively, you could always fo Sanchez and Austin out next week if you're keen

Really, either save and play PvA(whu) or get Naughton(avl) in this week and look at upgrading your defense later on.

Nice team, very nice. I know you may feel better heading caution taking out an Arsenal milf before Toons, but nevertheless I can't advocate keeping him tbh. Playing deep and has shown little to no aspirations to attack, I think there are better options, especially considering his price.

      Welcome! Probably save.

Longer term maybe look at downgrading moses to a real cheapie as he wont get near your midfield much.
Also you only need Panti and another cheapie. Lloris is too much cash in a keeper who doesnt keep clean sheets.

THIS is a big question right now. I think you will get 50/50 on here.

I think with the hassle of getting Costa into my team Im leaning towards Ivan. Also it would mean taking out a plum striker to make room for him -ditching Aguero Giroud or Kane is not ideal. Shifting any defender for Ivan looks a no brainer.
