Scout Scribbles – Skrtel Slapped with FA Charge

As Liverpool lick their wounds after a gutting 2-1 defeat to fierce rivals United, centre-back Martin Skrtel is left to rue a rash challenge that’s resulted in an FA charge. To compound Brendan Rodgers’ woes, Daniel Sturridge suffered a fresh injury setback during the United clash and has been ruled out of England’s European qualifiers. Elsewhere, Gareth McAuley’s one-match suspension is switched over to Craig Dawson in light of the former’s wrongful dismissal at the Etihad.

Skrtel pays price for late stamp

The FA took retrospective action and charged Martin Skrtel with violent conduct after the Liverpool defender appeared to stamp on Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea in Sunday’s match-up. The incident was not seen at the time by referee Martin Atkinson, but the FA elected to submit the footage to an independent panel of three former officials who reached a unanimous decision. Speaking in his post-match interview, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers insisted that there was no malicious intent from Skrtel as he made a fair attempt to retrieve possession:

“I think that it’s towards the end of the game, he’s been pushed upfield, but I don’t think he caught him with intent. I think he’s trying to nick the final contact on the ball, and if he does that then he probably gets a penalty, so he’s stretching. The ball goes into the ‘keeper’s arms, and obviously he’s caught him after that. But he’s just trying to get a toe on the ball, and if he does that and gets brought down then it’s probably a penalty. I didn’t think it was on purpose, at all, but obviously when the ‘keeper gets the studs like that then it can be a bit painful for him.”

The Scout Says:Skrtel has until 6pm this evening to respond to the charge and, if found guilty by the FA, will miss the Reds’ league clashes against Arsenal and Newcastle United, as well as their FA Cup replay against Blackburn Rovers. The Slovakian centre-back’s absence should afford Dejan Lovren a run of starts in central defence, providing the latter can recover from the abdominal wall injury that’s ruled him out of Croatia’s European Championship qualifiers. Liverpool’s 13-match unbeaten run, prior to their 2-1 defeat at the hands of United, was predicated on a remarkable defensive record – the Merseysiders conceded just eight goals and recorded eight clean sheets in that period – so any enforced changes in their rearguard threaten to disrupt the momentum generated. Arsenal’s high-powered offense and a sprightly Hull City outfit – who more than held their own against Chelsea’s plethora of stars – await Liverpool in their next three league encounters. Doubtless Rodgers would have preferred to call upon the services of the ever-reliable Skrtel but may well have to invest faith in the sometimes erratic Lovren or turn to Kolo Toure, depending on the Croatian’s availability. With Simon Mignolet also set for ankle scans, it’s fair to say that Rodgers faces an anxious wait over the international break before domestic action resumes in 11 days’ time.

Sturridge suffers fresh injury setback

Daniel Sturridge has been ruled out of England’s Euro 2016 qualifiers following scans on a hip injury sustained against Manchester United. The medical team at St George’s Park made the decision on Monday afternoon that Sturridge should sit out the international ties and return to Merseyside.

The Scout Says: Athough Liverpool are yet to declare the extent of Sturridge’s injury, it’s likely that both club and country will be unwilling to take even the slightest chance on the striker’s fitness, given that the former Chelsea marksman is only just hitting his stride following a lengthy injury lay-off – which, incidentally, can be traced back to a thigh strain sustained in England training last September. Four goals and three assists in eight appearances since returning from injury offered very encouraging signs before this latest setback, particularly for Fantasy managers eyeing up a potential double Gameweek for the Reds (subject to the outcome of their FA Cup replay). Beyond a tricky match-up at the Emirates next time out, Liverpool’s subsequent batch of fixtures (NEW, hul, wba, QPR) could offer Sturridge the springboard to play himself back into form. In the event that Sturridge’s latest complaint takes a while to resolve, Raheem Sterling could profit by being tasked with spearheading the Reds’ attack again. The youngster has drawn blanks in each of his last three since being moved to the right wing-back berth but prior to that, he’d scored or assisted in five of his last six appearances when fielded in a central position.

Dawson banned as FA overrule on-field call

The FA have transferred Gareth McAuley’s one-match suspension to Craig Dawson after referee Neil Swarbrick wrongly dismissed the former in a case of mistaken identity during West Brom’s visit to Manchester City. The Baggies decided against appealing for fear of having the ban extended.

The Scout Says: The fact that 10-man West Brom restricted Manchester City to just three goals last Saturday is testament to the tactical discipline manager Tony Pulis has instilled since the turn of the year. Prior to his appointment, the Baggies conceded 1.45 goals per match and recorded six shut-outs in 20 fixtures. Since his arrival, the West Midlanders have conceded just one goal per game and already doubled their clean sheet tally, with six in their last 10 fixtures. Dawson (4.5) emerged as the cheapest of the viable routes into West Brom’s rearguard – ahead of Joleon Lescott (5.1) and Gareth McAuley (4.8) – so it’s a nuisance for his 4% ownership that a favourable home encounter against Queens Park Rangers is next on the agenda, though he returns in Gameweek 32 for a home clash with Leicester before travelling to Selhurst Park. Chris Baird or Andre Wisdom should get the nod in Dawson’s short-term absence, though those looking for an alternative route into Pulis’ backline may consider the 4.0-priced Boaz Myhill, given that Ben Foster is out for the next six months. It’s worth noting, though, that the Baggies face four of the current top five in their closing match-ups, with showdowns against Liverpool, United, Chelsea and Arsenal from Gameweek 34 onwards.

    Panti
    Terry, Bertrand, Alderweireld, Bellerin, Hadiera
    Hazard, Eriksen, Sinclair, Puncheon, Mane
    Giroud, Kane, Aguero

Got a healthy 5.9m in bank but confused what to do with it. Thinking of upgrading Puncheon. Any ideas?

Nice team.I would say upgrade Puncheon but assuming you plan on playing Sinclair for the double it might be worth holding off on that to avoid a benching headache. Could save upgrade Haidara and then save the rest of the money for Giroud > Costa for the blank/double?

On Wildcard what front 3 would you have now to set you up for rest of season?

Kane has to be in there I think because of tied up value for me (and presumably for majority of top players)
Costa - but 2 yellows and a Mourinhop niggling injury
Aguero - fixtures vs form dilemma
Giroud - fixtures vs form the other way around
Sturridge - great differntial but legs of glaass
Benteke - for the DGW only then ship assuming he plays the Internationals.
Austin - not on form at all in dire team.

....sorry alongside Kane and Aguero. Aguero will come good and doesn't have a blank. You can downgrade Aguero or Costa to Giroud, after GW34.

There is no correct (or good) answer to this,

For me It's all about best threat forwards Vs Least threat teams, so for the last few games even in form forwards may not be the best/only option.
It dosen't always work out If i recall rightly I benched Lukaku for the last game of the season vs United when he dropped a hattie in the 5-5 draw and that lost me the mini-league by a point. Still feel the burn today

Kane has to be in there just over sheer ownership, if he produces and you don't have him your in the minority.

      Kane - MUST HAVE!
Giroud - Great form, a short run of bad fixtures but in this form he can easily score against Liverpool and Chelsea. Go with 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 rather than selling.
Aguero - City have to go ALL IN for the title and Aguero can only benefit from this. Also great run of fixtures and yes ... he is the most explosive player in the league. Form is temporary, class is permament. 14 days break will do him good.

This is the front line to have and anybody can afford it IMO 🙂

Costa - He is good but I can't see him outscore those 3 guys. Chelsea is defending (literally DEFENDING) their first place and they won't attack much if they go 1 up. Mourinho is killing his potential, because he can easily score few in one game (Swansea). Chelsea is playing Arsenal, Liverpool, United and I can see Mourinho going with the bus against these teams 🙂
Sturridge - I was big fan until I watched last few games. He is too selfish, he wants the ball everywhere in attack and he doesn't pass. On the other hand, Sterling back on right wing could help him BIG! I think he is the one to watch when Sterling moves back upfront but than again .. I would rather go with Sterling (cheaper and very attacking MID).
Benteke&Austin - I don't like them. Their teams can easily go without scoring for 2-3 weeks in a row and I can't see them score more than 1 on regular basis 🙂

Are these injuries to players right before an international break mostly fake and created by their clubs to stop them from going to play for their countries ?

Yup, or, they might have small injuries that wouldn't prevent them from playing PL but it prevents them from playing international games

I wouldn't be surprised. Imagine paying a fortune for a supercar and letting an occasional driver take it for a spin. you'd say it had a flat tyre or needed servicing too.

But on the other hand, Its a massive honour to be called-up for your country so I'm sure most players would do anything they can to get a cap.

Many of us seem focused on the forwards right now, but the bigger concern could be whether there are even four midfielders worth owning?

Maybe the strategy should be sticking with three forwards and not waste transfers on them since the top six or seven should all do reasonably well, and then just use the two midfielder spots after Silva and Hazard to play the dgw fixtures?

His minutes are being cut short, and I can see Swans just coasting for the rest of the season with nothing to play for. He's always been disappointing when I've owned him.

I have Siggy Mane and Eriksen as well as the big two. Might ship Eriksen for Phillips or Sinclair and then use that spot to rotate through dgw players for the rest of the season.

I think there definitely are. Seems like expectations for mids is a bit too high at the moment. Everyone ditched Caz but he's still ticking over. Eriksen continues to tick over and look dangerous yet people are talking about selling. I don't get it.

Maybe the ADM and Alexis hauls gave us those high expectations, but to me no other mids are in the same class as Silva and Hazard right now, for consistency or explosiveness.

2 assists and 0 goals in 7 for Eriksen. I'm losing patience with him, just can't see an appealing replacement.

True but the fixtures are there and Spurs still motivated so he's still one of the better options.

Quite happy with Silva, Hazard, Eriksen and Mane for now.

Silva and Hazard are doing the business fairly regularly. Eriksen isn't doing amazing but is getting the odd assist and I've seen him hit the post twice recently, a goal is close! 🙂

As for Mane I have nothing to go on right now but I liked his stats last time I checked him. He's also given me the money for Costa so I'll stick for now

Have those four as well, plus Siggy. Just not convinced on any beyond Silva and Hazard, though that might be good for variety of team choices as the season winds down.

Weighing up Foster to Myhill for a hit. My other keeper is Krul and I will WC in GW35 -

    Myhill - QPR LEI cpl
    Krul - sun liv TOT

I would play Myhill over Krul in all three and youve got to assume (barring a pen save) that Myhill would outscore him by 4 points, yes?

Thinking about ditching Sanchez to free up funds to replace Austin the week after the double

    a) Siggy Pros most inclined to go with him nice fixtures + nailed on Cons can be taken off early
    b) Mata : Pros Maximum flair , low ownership , so much better than the rest Cons : could be droppedd
    c) Mane : Low ownership , decent fixtures not as good as Siggy , underlying stats nailed on Cons failed to deliver vs Burnley at home , Southampton sometimes play 2 upfront = on the wing
    d) any other suggestions ?

No worries, I know some of Mata's fixtures seem a bit off but I think he can do well in most of them. City and Chelsea seem nasty on the surface but City can concede as we know and he may be fired up against his old club.

All round not a bad squad to be honest.. Tough when Sanchez/Kun aren't firing. I'd probably think about getting somebody in for an Arsenal player in preperation for their blank.

      Strikers - okay for DGW
Mid - Caz maybe get rid of one for Mane/Siggy
Def - maybe upgrade Bellerin to Alde
Keepers - generally okay.. maybe upgrade Krul?

Tempting to get him for the differential but the only way I could is:

    Forster Gilks

    Hazard Sanchez Eriksen Mane Puncheon

I really want Silva but need to sort out Forster. Is Forster and Sanchez to Davis and Silva worth a hit?
