The Digest – Gameweek 30

Our final look at the pertinent topics from Gameweek 30 sees us assess United’s resurgent Spaniard, Palace’s ascent under Alan Pardew and the relentless armband consistency of Tottenham’s new talisman.

The Player

Whilst Steven Gerrard did his best to hog the back pages with a 38-second dismissal, there’s no denying Juan Mata was the headline act in Sunday’s Anfield showdown. The Spaniard’s class and subsequent two-goal haul proved the difference as the visitors ended Liverpool’s 13-match unbeaten run with a dominant win, described by Louis van Gaal as “one of the most important moments in my career”.

Having failed to start any of United’s six matches between Gameweeks 23-28, Mata looked confined to a bit-part role but a suspension to Angel Di Maria has afforded him the chance to finally nail down a regular spot under the Dutchman. His involvement has helped the Old Trafford outfit to vital back-to-back wins over Champions League rivals Spurs and Liverpool and Van Gaal’s post-match praise of his role on the United right certainly bodes well for future pitch time, leaving Di Maria likely to occupy the opposite flank ahead of Ashley Young.

Impressively – given that he’s started just 19 of his side’s first 30 fixtures – Mata’s Anfield double takes his tally to seven for the season. That’s more than twice Di Maria’s three strikes and a total superior to all but one of his previous three campaigns in the top flight.

With the chase for a top-four spot intensifying, Mata looks to have rediscovered the level of displays that served up 162 and 212 points in his two seasons at Stamford Bridge. Van Gaal’s side don’t have it easy, though – showdowns with City and Chelsea in the next three will perhaps ensure the playmaker stays off our radars for now, though United, and Mata, have offered strong recent evidence to suggest that they have the form to prevail.

The Team

A 2-1 win at the Britannia elevated Palace into eleventh spot and continued their remarkable ascent under Alan Pardew. The Eagles have now served up six victories and a draw in ten outings since the new man took charge – harvesting a total of 19 points in comparison to the 17 points accrued in their first 20 fixtures.

With the emphasis on attack, Pardew’s decision to shift Jason Puncheon to the middle has allowed him to deploy Yannick Bolasie and Wilfried Zaha on the flanks and all three have prospered in recent weeks – Zaha has now struck in back-to-back matches, whilst the former two have three assists apiece over the last four.

Pardew’s decision to call upon Glenn Murray up front has also proved inspired. Handed just 16 minutes by Neil Warnock and farmed out on loan, Murray’s barged his way to the front of the pecking order in the new regime, with four goals, an assist and five bonus points in the last four.

It’s testament to Pardew’s approach that, since his arrival, only champions City have fired more shots inside the box than the Selhurst Park side. Whilst a lack of a double Gameweek may deter would-be investors, a schedule that pits them against Sunderland, West Brom and Hull in the next four should ensure their short-term prospects remain solid before the fixtures turns nasty in Gameweek 35.

The Talking Point

A three-goal haul against Leicester took Harry Kane to joint second in the overall Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings and places the Tottenham youngster 16 points ahead of any other forward.

Given that Kane failed to start a single league match until Gameweek 11, his rise as a Fantasy force is all the more remarkable. Serving up 18 goals and five assists in 20 first XI appearances, he’s proven a fixture-proof option, too, delivering 18, 12 and 11-point hauls against Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal since the turn of the year. Putting his form into perspective, Kane has outscored Sergio Aguero by 14 goals to three in this calendar year so far with a series of displays that have persuaded almost 50% of FPL managers to snap up his services.

Even though we have three confirmed double Gameweeks on the upcoming schedule left to play, the issue now is – do we dare to look beyond Kane as a captaincy option? In his last 13 appearances, the 6.4-priced striker has produced seven lots of double figures and has blanked just four times over that run. Whilst Villa and QPR brace themselves for a double Gameweek 31, Kane prepares to square up to a Burnley side with the second worst defensive record in the top flight. Such is his form, there’d be no real surprise if he outscored the likes of Charlie Austin and Christian Benteke – indeed, it’s a sign of his stock that he’s currently neck-and-neck with Austin in this week’s Captain Poll, with 26% of the votes cast apiece.

Looking at Kane’s schedule, there’s arguably just one fixture that could pose problems – in Gameweek 34 away to a Southampton side with ten clean sheets in 16 outings at St Mary’s. Handily, Chelsea already have a double that week, giving us a rare chance to consider alternatives to the Tottenham man.

Even in Gameweek 37, when Arsenal are poised for a double, Kane threatens to cast a shadow over our armband intentions. Given that the Gunners travel to Old Trafford first of all, they could be solely reliant on a home clash against Sunderland to bring in the points. Kane, meanwhile, hosts Hull in the same round of fixtures and, as we’ve seen many times already, is more than capable of destroying any other rival as a reliable captaincy contender.

So, Liverpool should have been down to 8 men on Sunday - Gerrard obviously, Skrtel if the ref had done his job properly and Balotelli - if that Orc hadn't restrained him!

Obviously wait on players like Benteke who is on international duty. Not a big DGW really, but you could do one of your keepers to Guzan. If you want to be really cute you could go Downing and Barahino to Phillips and Austin.

    Hi All,

I'm having a pretty unremarkable season, but still have my wildcard and looking to finish with a bang!

Keen to know if there's anyone out there in the same boat and when they're planning to use? Are there any obvious gameweeks to use it?

    Thanks!

In GW34 Che/Leic have a DGW and in GW37 Ars/Sund have a DGW. If Liverpool beat Blackburn their game v Hull in GW33 will be moved to one of these Gameweeks - that is probably the optimum week to play the WC

Posted this this morning so maybe a few others would like to read it.

Doing some data analysis based on the Anewpla website. Interesting stuff when I compare myself to Simon, world number 1.

Got a higher captain score to him 436 - 392 and we're quite similar on points scored by midfielders 5.52 ppg - 5.33 ppg (slightly better) and forwards 5.63 ppg - 6.16 ppg (worse). Not a huge difference though considering you have 4 mids usually and only 3 strikers.

Yet our defensive scores vary significantly and this is what I found hugely surprising. Didn't realise I was so poor at defensive picks. I scored 3.59 ppg whereas he scored a whopping 4.74 ppg which is a massive difference. Clearly something I need to pay more attention to.

It really is insane how well he's done considering he has a fairly low captaincy score and he has benched a massive 276 points (compared to my 141). He's also benched the "wrong" keeper (i.e. scored more out of his 2 GKs) 10 times whereas I've only done so 3 times. N.B. I played Forster every week from GW 4 up until Winter WC so that makes sense.

All of this and I've got a 'lucky' rank in the top 750 and he's a whole 121 points ahead. Well played Simon because, if it's even possible, he's actually underachieving.

It's not a May as well thing for me. Every top player has a dip. I don't think Benteke will do much. He may grab a goal but I'm sure kun will return to form, he's too good not to. He is doing well away and his underlying stats are through the roof.
I'm keeping and will not be convinced other wise.
I have the cash to do Austin to Costa the following week though.

Lowest score you've ever had for a single player?

A few years back i captained Arteta back in his Everton days when he was playing against weak opposition.
He got a red card, so that was -2 doubled up to -4.
    Anyone had a bigger minus?

Not a (c) option but there was a defender that got red carded and conceded 4 goals a couple of years ago.

It was a toxic job but I can't help but wonder if Herrera bringing a bit of urgency to the midfield might have done just enough to keep him in the contract for another season (even without CL qualification).

As a person who watched Dortmund very frequently, I would love that. But we shall see how we go for now, LVG overall not doing the worst at all (despite making a number of errors imo).

It has actually been better then I thought with LvG and I like how we come across as better and better with time. But it may just be the"lack" of RvP that gives me that feeling.

Klopp would be good and he has been in top possition with Dortmund(and brought them there too) which is what I feel like Moyes lacked in experience.

The RVP situation certainly has let me down, I dislike the favoritism. But overall I definitely think there are positives there as well.

Agreed, would love to see what he could do with some strong financial backing and not having to worry about Munich signing his best players.

Although I'm no Luddite when it comes to change, all the feedback during the beta phase was negative.
          All of it.
But being the Beeb and wanting to save money then they went ahead with it anyway since user feedback is something that their charter dictates.
It doesn't dictate that pay a blind bit of notice to it, though.
So we're stuck with the new version unless we change our homepage to another news source and the Grauniad beats the Beeb hands down for impartiality so that's my new homepage.

Nationality is irrelevant. To count as homegrown for UEFA purposes a player must have spent 3 seasons at that club between the ages of 15 and 21. To count as association trained for UEFA purposes the player must have been at a club (or clubs) in the same association (i.e. the FA) for 3 seasons between 15 and 21.

For FA PL purposes association trained counts as homegrown. Fabregas therefore counts as homegrown for Chelsea in the PL and as association trained in the CL.

Eric Dier of Spurs, on the other hand, does not count as either homegrown or association trained for Spurs. Despite being English his football upbringing was with Sporting Lisbon and he didn't sign for Spurs till he was 20. For both UEFA and FA purposes he counts as a foreign player.

Looking at Bellerin -> Toby, in view of limited minutes for Bellerin, but only have the exact money for it. Do I do it now or wait and risk pricing myself out of the move?

He's a million miles away from a rise and there's always Naughton.

Ok I obviously don't mean immediately, I mean before the end of the break. Or will things move so slowly that I'll be able to keep track?

The internationals are my area of expertise. It practically goes in to hibernation. There will be a little rush this Friday from casuals not realising. But other than that nothing happens. I've used both my wild cards over this years internationals. It's been pathetic money making wise.
In fact, I believe Toby won't rise at all as he's so under the radar.

Given Toby's price only changed a day or two ago and Bellerin looks well short of a drop, you're probably safe to wait until after the internationals.

@ Lucy and others who support the Saints.
I believe Liverpool have a good academy.
But why is the Southampton outfit just so good at producing players?
I've seen some rumblings of the number of foreign players being cut, do you think it's a good thing?
But to reiterate, how have Southampton produced so many top class and even world class players?

I mean there are probably a lot of technicalities that I don't understand or don't have access to but it strikes me that, apart from our exemplary scouting system for schoolboys, particularly along the south coast, it's down to opportunities. Players are able to break into the first team, particularly in recent years when we've been in League One and the Championship, where Bale, Walcott and the Ox made their debuts. Those kinds of opportunities aren't available to players from teams fighting for European places etc.
