Captain Sensible – Gameweek 31

Our pre-Gameweek members article which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

It says everything about Harry Kane’s form that he leads the way in this week’s Captain Poll with just under 25% of the votes cast, despite the fact he faces just one fixture in the Gameweek. The Spurs forward has served up five sets of double-figures in the last eight Gameweeks and now pays visit to a Burnley side with a single clean sheet in their last 14 league fixtures.

Tucked in just behind, Charlie Austin is handed back-to-back road trips to West Brom and Villa as he looks to end a three-match scoring drought. Given that the Baggies have four home clean sheets in five under Tony Pulis, the Hawthorns encounter certainly looks the toughest of QPR’s two fixtures in terms of goals potential. Villa, meanwhile, have just one shut-out in six since Tim Sherwood’s arrival and could struggle to keep Chris Ramsey’s side at bay.

Eden Hazard is next in line with 10% of votes as Chelsea prepare to host Stoke. The Belgian has struck three times in the last six, though all of those goals have arrived on the road – he has, somewhat surprisingly, failed to score at home since Gameweek 16 and has earned just two assists in his last five at the Bridge.

Christian Benteke sits fourth in the poll with 8% backing, having notched three times in as many matches ahead of his pair of fixtures against United and QPR. The Red Devils’ recent resilience (one goal conceded in four) suggests the Villa frontman may struggle at Old Trafford but his home clash against the R’s looks promising, bearing in mind that Chris Ramsey’s men have conceded at least twice in each of their last five.

Sergio Aguero is backed by 7% of voters ahead of City’s trip to Palace. The Argentine has struggled for form, with just a single assist in the last four Gameweeks, though it’s fair to say he’s been far more consistent on his travels this term, producing attacking points in ten of his 13 road trips. Olivier Giroud has also earned 7% of the votes cast. The Arsenal frontman is in remarkable form, having scored in seven of his last eight starts, though he faces a tough task to break down a Liverpool rearguard that arrives at the Emirates on the back of six consecutive away clean sheets.

Further down, Diego Costa and Wayne Rooney (3% apiece) look ready-made differentials ahead of home encounters with Stoke and Villa respectively. Providing he recovers from a hamstring problem, Costa – who has scored in nine of his 11 Stamford Bridge outings – cannot be overlooked, whilst Rooney’s recent move up front has seen him score three times in the last two at Old Trafford.

    Koscielny, Cresswell, Bertrand
    Hazard, Eriksen, Sanchez, Silva
    Sakho, Kane, Aguero

    (Foster; O'Shea, Moses, Dawson)

2 free transfers, nothing in the bank.

Probably should get rid of one (if not two) of Sanchez, Eriksen, Cresswell or Aguero?

I hope Austin fails this week as the rage quits would be legendary. Those that sold Giroud for him (some for a hit) for the last DGW, then kept all this time.

    Please fail Austin.

Hey now. What about us folks who have held Austin and would be dolts (and I KNOW you can appreciate that, oh ye man who doth not suffer fools -- for I am the same...!) to have sold him? Should we not be rewarded for our prudent patience and holds? ]As if your answer will actually affect the outcome....Still, I must ask.]

I saw Davies advocating a Leicester defender for their double, in that case it's a no.

Two away games for QPR and they look to be getting worse. Sure, he could do something, but I've not been tempted at all, kept Giroud the whole time.

If I had Giroud I wouldn't be tempted either.
My unease to lose Sanchez earlier is why I still have him in all honesty. The double is just a bonus.

That hold of Giroud made sense. The calculus was not complex:

If you had Austin, you held for the DGW.
If you had Giroud, you held cos he was red hot.
Everyone else more or less had Kun and Kane (some with Rooney and Costa).

One way to look at it. The other plot line (I am going from memory here) is that the original Austin acquisition was related to his previous DGW, and the interest of many to upgrade at midfield where at the time, the more expensive studs were producing while Costa and Aguero had time off. So, there was a compelling rationale to have and to hold (sounds romantic, don't it?) Austin through this GW. And like Daniel West Indie says, most of us plan on selling Charlie to Costa or Rooney or someone of that caliber next week.

Or aversion to hits. I took the hit for Giroud after the Austin dgw and has paid off handsomely.

Kudos. IIRC, my feeling was less about hit aversion (cos I have taken many) and more about Austin having a pending DGW while Giroud had a pending blank. That strategic decision clearly was the wrong one, as the near-term tactical move of having Giroud resulted in far more points than Austin. Sometimes, there are two or more viable strategies, and then it's just a wait & see.

Have, may hold, or may sell for Siggy. I have been contemplating all week. I think the Arsenal vs Pool game will have goals, and thus am inclined to hold. However, Siggy is a more major featured attacker on his team, and his team is hosting a lesser opponent. Sanchez to Siggy is my move the following week, regardless, to move Austin to Costa or Rooney.

at this rate he could be a differential in the top 10k for burnley. but just saw that the stats speak of a strong bur defence. was surprised.

What do you suggest with 2 FT & 0.2m itb

    Panti
    Clyne / Ivan / Pva
    Haz / Sanchez / Eriksen / Silva
    Kun / Kane / Austin
    (Krul / Walters / Bruce / Wasi)

    A) Pva -> Naughton
    B) Walters -> Cork (play Pva)

Note that B will enable me to do Austin & Sanchez -> Costa & 7.5m mid whereas A will take me -4 to do the same moves next week

    krul hamer
    ivanovic bertrand dawson pva baird
    hazard sanchez silva mane boyd
    aguero kane giroud

only thing i can think of is bertrand and giroud to alderwierld and costa.

if costa not fit then cant think of anything
    thoughts appreciated

Naughton to Baird could be useful if you plan on keeping Sanchez/Giroud thru their blank GW. Baird is likely useless to you. Swansea have good fixtures. Wouldn't trade Bertie or Giroud.

    Panti (Forster)
Ivan | Clyne | Rose (Dawson | McShane)
Haz | Silva | Sterling | Eriksen (Boyd)
    Aguero | Kane | Austin

    2 FTs

    A. Forster ➡ K.Davis
    B. Forster ➡ Myhill
    C. Rose ➡ Naughton

    which one should I do?

not a fan of B as WBA fixtures get tough after the next 3. Soton fixtures good throughout, except City last GW

Why not? Just wondering as a Baird owner too. Doesn't the Dawson ban help him? Apologies, been completely out of the loop for 2 weeks now.
