Scouting the Doubles – Gameweek 34 – Hull City

In light of Leicester’s miraculous revival and a run of six matches without a win, Hull City now only sit outside the relegation berths on goal difference alone. With Arsenal, Spurs and United in the final four Gameweeks, the Tigers will be desperate to capitalise on their match in hand when they travel to Crystal Palace and host Liverpool in Gameweek 34.

The Prospects

In a Gameweek that also includes two fixtures for Chelsea, Liverpool and the buoyant Foxes, it’s difficult to make a case for Steve Bruce’s out-of-form side. Allied to the fact they’ve netted just four goals in their last six outings, the Yorkshire club face three of the league’s top six sides after the double – necessitating an exit route for any potential acquisitions. With free transfers at a premium leading up to a double Gameweek 37 for Arsenal and Sunderland, few Fantasy managers will want to shoulder that burden.

Hull’s first head-to-head of Gameweek 34 sees them pay visit to a Crystal Palace team that succumbed to a shock 2-0 defeat at Selhurst Park last Saturday. The Eagles were grounded following a four-match winning streak in which they netted 11 goals and recorded an historic victory over Manchester City. With six goals in seven appearances, Palace frontman Glenn Murray is the form forward leading up this encounter. Meanwhile, among the league’s midfield roster, only Alexis Sanchez (12) and David Silva (15) have attempted more shots inside the box than hat-trick hero Yannick Bolasie (11) in the last six Gameweeks. On the flip side, City’s goalscorers will draw encouragement from the fact that Palace have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last nine league matches.

The Tigers welcome the Reds to the KC Stadium in the second of their double match-ups, knowing only Chelsea have bested them in their last four home ties. Liverpool have registered clean sheets in four of their last seven fixtures but revealed a defensive vulnerability in their 4-1 defeat to Arsenal that Bruce will be keen to exploit. Hull could also be boosted by the absence of Daniel Sturridge, given that the English frontman was ruled out of Liverpool’s FA Cup semi-final and will be short of fitness even if he features in their trip to West Bromwich Albion.

Hull have notched just two shut-outs in the previous 12 Gameweeks, rendering their rearguard a near write-off from a Fantasy perspective. The promise of bonus save points would have made goalkeeper Allan McGregor (4.8) a budget option for the double, yet he no longer boasts security of starts after being dropped for Steve Harper last weekend.

The Likely Lads

Dame N’Doye (5.5) piqued the interest of Fantasy managers upon his switch to Hull in the January transfer window, netting in his first three starts. Despite failing to score in his subsequent appearances, only three forwards have attempted more shots than the Senegalese striker (14) in their last four matches  although only four were from inside the box.

Ahmed Elmohamady leads the Tigers’ scoring charts this season with 92 points, highlighting the dearth of attacking flair in their squad. The 4.9-priced midfielder scored against Chelsea in Gameweek 30 and has mustered more shots inside the box (three) than any other Hull midfielder in the previous four matches, whilst his ten key passes over that period has been bettered by only four other midfield options in the top-flight.

The Cheeky Punt

Given their form, it’s arguable that any Hull option is no more than a punt but, as we’ve seen in recent double Gameweeks, it’s folly to write off struggling sides.

With Gaston Ramirez struggling due to a hamstring problem, Jake Livermore‘s (5.1) could be worth considering. The former Spurs man has fired eight attempts on goal in the last four matches, more than any midfield team-mate.

If Bruce’s glowing praise regarding Mohamed Diame’s return to the side is anything to go by, the English head coach will be desperate to reinstate the Senegalese midfielder back into the starting line-up following two brief run-outs in recent weeks. Despite only clocking 934 minutes of pitch time this campaign, Diame is Hull’s second-top scorer, having notched four goals in his first six starts for the club.

For those managers operating on a shoe-string budget in the upcoming double, Irish defender Paul McShane could prove a decent enabler. With uncertainty over the Hull keeper situation, the former Sunderland man – who netted in Hull’s recent trip to Swansea City- sets you back just 3.9. The Tigers defensive record suggests this may be a punt too far for most, though.

Abel Hernandez (6.6) represents a risky outside bet. The Uruguayan striker was dropped for Hull’s visit to Southampton but came up trumps in the Chelsea clash two weeks before, scoring for the first time since Gameweek 8. Bruce needs goals, though, and with Nikica Jelavic still injured, Hernandez could return to the XI alongside N’Doye.

Bench Silva or bench Zaha next week?

It feels so wrong to bench Silva, but this is my last chance to get any value out of having Zaha.. and they are against hull but.. how do I live with benching Silva?

I could also bench Kane and keep both Zaha and Silva..

    But Southampton look so leaky!

Leaky away from home though, surely? You could argue that their defensive away form has been woeful, but playing at St. Mary's hasn't been a walk in the park this season at all.

      I'd just play Silva, IMO.

well that is true.. they are going to have the advantage of being at home when spurs get there.. and spurs aren't really trying very hard either of late.

Spurs away from home have been horribly recently, though they did look good at Newcastle this week.

For me, i'd just bench Zaha. I know the temptation as I have him too, but he's going out for Henderson it seems and I do have Murray to cover any Palace hammering, if that happens.

Yeah I don't have that Murray cover and I do expect there to be one last hurrah before their fixtures tighten up.. I am now tempted to bench Kane 😯

Also, I think if Arsenal wins the FA Cup, then the 6th placed team in England qualifies for the Europa League Group Stages automatically. It's up for grabs for both of these teams.

how many are going 2 mids and 1 def/gk from Liverpool and how many are doing 1 and 1? Liverpool really don't look that great but I'm sure Rodgers will still want European football, even if it's Europa so they'll throw everything at it..but think 1&1 might be the way

Shall we get rid of Silva to get a Pool mid in? 7 goals in the last 6 away games as a team. Even though their fixtures were not so easy (Arsenal, Southampton, Everton and Swansea), do we think they’ll score 3 or more in the next 2 games?

what's your reasoning with the two liverpool defenders?

how do you plan on getting Arsenal back in?

I went with Ospina myself but I've seen very good arguments around here for preferring to have 3 Arsenal outfield. I think I would consider another keeper if I was doing it over.

      1. Bolt-on
        • 13 Years
        9 years, 2 months ago

Sure - im not convinced with henderson (positioning with gerrard lurking) and coutinho never really delivers for me.

Thats why i went the two defenders - who would you swap one of them with?

        1. ellelelle
          • 9 Years
          9 years, 2 months ago

I think you could get GIroud in easily if you made some money saving options in backline - downgrade Ospina and maybe reconsider Skrtel if you want to save more money. Leicester defenders offer good value and attacking threat. From what others have said, it looks like Huth and Morgan would be prime candidates.

You could even have enough there to switch Kane to Giroud.. Vardy is cheap and may fare well over the coming weeks.

After DGW you should be able to get rid of Fab for one Arsenal mid and the following week remove Sterling for another. Then you'd have three strong threats on field.

Thanks for that Elle. Having schmeichel in goals im not sure i would like to double up on leicester defenders. Something to mull over though. One last question for you and maybe im being stubborn - would you go fabregas or coutinho?

Nah you have to go with your own instincts in the end - you're the one pressing to confirm!

I think I'd go Fabregas.. but it's close.

Yes, ideally I'd want a quality keeper from a quality defense to compliment Schmeichel.
So him and Davis are both good options, there's an argument to be made for having a treble up in attack for their DGW 37, so in that case Davis will also suffice even though Saints' away from leaves much to be desired defensively.

Would by no means rotate him with a sub-par GK though, the likes of Krul, Panti, Heaton, Green. etc... At this point in the season, I think a smart investment in your other GK is the way to go.

yes this week, but don't forget about funds tied up in defence after this week. You'll most likely have to use two transfers for each arsenal player if you tie up too much money. Ive noticed everyone doing this. They'll have to factor future hits in two because of poor money distribution.

I got Hendo earlier today as I saw Eriksen was falling. Then I saw Lucas was out, meaning Gerrard is probably in the team, which will strip penalties from Henderson, which is a big part of his appeal. That said, his price makes him more holdable as a 4th mid, and more flexible going forward, should you have injuries to cope with. FWIW.

IMO yes, thought a lot depends on what you could with the rest of the money and your plans with the team for the run in. On paper, I'd choose the most attacking players all day erry' day, so Coutinho and Sterling by far.

id go hendo and sterling. Coutinho is a better real life player than fantasy player. plus the extra cash from hendo to use elsewhere has to be factored in

So we know Hendo's output is limited with Gerrard around. Seems likely considering Lucas is out?

Coutinho will always play there in the hole but the boy can't shoot for his life

Where's Sterling position exactly? Haven't been following Liverpool much. Is he still on right wing back or back to front as striker?

striker and behind the striker. RWB days are over.

Played as striker vs Villa for the FA cup semi. Much depends on Sturridge's availability though, in a 433 he could play winger as they did vs Newcastle, or RCAM if BR plays 3421. A lot is up in the air, and if Lallana and Markovic are both fit, it could also raise his chance of an attacking berth as both can play at RWB if BR plays the 3421.

Really hard to give a straight answer though are there are many variables to take into account and there's no telling what formation BR will favor on any given day. Ideally a Sterling owner would want an unfit Sturridge in a 3421 though IMO.

Sterling up front. best option. its a huge pity his shooting is so poor

True. A little more composure, and he could be a real nightmare for the opposition.

Lucas is rated at 75% chance of playing on FPL. Hendo will stay in my team until we hopefully get more team news

    ive got six dgw players

    migs, Moreno, sterling
    terry, haz, fab

Is it worth a hit for Leicester or hull players?
Think im at big advantage with no hits. Starting the week 4 to 8 points ahead of a lot.

i would say take a hit. Will take them myself. Put 1 or 2 leicester attackers.

Thanks for advice. I just wouldn't pick hull players as there useless. Agree Leicester are in good attacking form, but the fact they play Chelsea who have shut up shop makes it a single gw pretty much. So I cant see vardy outscoring murray or kane starting minus two points. As for cambiasso, think hes a silly pick by everyone. An old man wont be fit for two games in a week despite his quality. oddly tempted by albrighton though

I dont expect Sturridge to play more than a game tops. If you are on a WC you should get another player from Liverpool (Skrtel, Mignolet)

    Not sure what to do.

    Davis
    Wollscheid Skrtel Bertrand
    Fabregas Sterling Hazard (C) Silva
    Murray Aguero (v) Kane

    Bench: Fonte, Lucas (!), Lescott.
    0FT, 3.1M ITB.

    I could do:
    Fonte>Ivanovic (-4)
    Lescott>Schlupp (-4)

    then next week:

    Murray>Giroud
    Bertrand>PvA (-4) - For the DGW

I don't hate the Fonte to Ivan for -4. I've had Ivan for a while now, as it always seems that when I don't have him, I wish I did.

It seems scary not owning Ivan over a DGW. And triple Southampton is proving to be too much with the DGWs coming around.

It's nice to get rid of Lescott with those fixtures too.

And next week getting PvA might be a masterstroke if he plays both games in the DGW. I want Giroud in ASAP as his fixtures vs. Murray's are a lot nicer.

As Heraty88 mentions there below, Terry worth a thought as well. But Ivan, if he gets offensive minded, almost becomes a hybrid defender-midfielder-forward. That's when it's really fun owning him. Terry has been looking keen to get on the scoresheet recently, however. I'm not huge on the Lescott to Schlupp move, though right as I wrote that I started to think perhaps anything other than Lescott vs. Liverpool is a good risk. Watch Brom shut them out. 🙂

            I could simply do:

            Fonte>Terry

            then:

            Bertrand>PvA
            Murray>Giroud

            the week after.

That seems very sound to me as I digest it. I'd hate to be part of the reason why you don't get Ivan if he goes off. To be honest, however, he hasn't been doing that great recently. As others have mentioned around here, seems he's sticking more with defending now. I think Fonte to Terry followed by a next week move of Murray to Giroud seems a good way to go. You can pick up PVA later if you still have a hankering. Until then, Sunderland's fixtures aren't that great, so not sure you'll miss out on much.

True, but i was going to do Silva > Sanchez anyway after he played Villa, seems worth it considering Arsenal's double, and could always get something against Chelsea, plus he's sort of back in form.

This is one of those FPL situations that is really tough. And, right now, I'm in a bit of a pickle myself. I have Eriksen, who is looking likely to drop very soon here, and I could get him out for Henderson to avoid that drop, but then I hate to make a transfer so early. On your end, from what I've read about Silva, it seems he's fine. And after this GW is when I think it's wise to bring in Arsenal players. Jose don't like no Wenger, and vice-versa, and in that battle of managers, I go with Jose.

Henderson OR Coutinho? Which would be a better option is Lucas is ruled out for the DGW. Never imagined myself wanting Lucas to be back ASAP...

Henderson, even if Gerrard does play, and he is sitting deeper in midfield, i still believe he will get something, he likes to attack.

Moreno attacks better as a LB than being a LM but I still want Rodgers to revert to the 3421. It's a lot more solid at the back.

If Remy is out, is it madness to bring in Giroud (CHE) over Vardy (bur, CHE) if it saves me taking a hit later to get 3 arsenal before 37?

I want Ospina, Ramsey/Ozil and Giroud. I already have Bellerin who I'll need to get rid of if with another trannie if Debuchy starts.

Depends how strong your bench is whether you need to take Remy out i suppose. You have 3 weeks to bring Arsenal players in so no real panic.Im swapping Remy for Giroud after DGW.
