Scout Notes – Gameweek 36 – Monday

Arsenal’s ten-match unbeaten run comes to an end as they waste chance after chance against Swansea at the Emirates. Fit-again Bafetimbi Gomis emerges from the bench to help sneak an unlikely win for the Welsh side.

Gunners silenced by resilient Swans

Arsenal failed to translate their dominance into tangible returns as they fell to a 1-0 defeat against Swansea City on Monday night. The Gunners spurned a plethora of opportunities to take the lead, ending the encounter with 23 shots to the Swans’ eight after testing Lukasz Fabianski on nine occasions.

Bafetimbi Gomis’ late winner consigned the North London club to their first defeat in 11 matches, having emerged victorious in all but one of their fixtures (a 0-0 draw with Chelsea) since a 2-1 away loss to rivals Tottenham Hotspur back in Gameweek 24. Arsenal picked an inopportune moment to fail to score in successive home ties for the first time since April 2011 – just as they gear up for a double Gameweek 37.

Those that drafted in coverage early were punished by the poverty of attacking returns and the absence of a clean sheet. Olivier Giroud drew a blank for the fourth consecutive match and struggled to impart his presence against Garry Monk’s disciplined outfit. The French marksman mustered just one shot on target across his 68-minute spell – which, incidentally, was his first accurate effort in four outings. Given Giroud’s clear lack of form, the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Alexis Sanchez will likely feature higher up in many managers’ plans.

Despite Sanchez’s fruitless evening, the 145,000 managers that recruited the Chilean livewire prior to Gameweek 36 were given plentiful encouraging signs. The ex-Barcelona star fashioned four shots on goals and crafted two chances, whilst Ramsey posted similarly impressive numbers, attempting five shots, and creating three chances.

Perhaps more surprisingly, Santi Cazorla posed the biggest attacking threat among the Gunners’ ranks, engineering two more attempts on goal (seven) than any other midfielder this Gameweek. Allied with his free-kick proficiency, Cazorla’s heavy involvement in the final third could attract a new wave of investors.

Arsenal now travel to Old Trafford to face off against Manchester United in the first of their double fixtures, before hosting Sunderland four days later. Arsene Wenger’s troops have won their last five road matches, so the Red Devils clash promises to be a well-contested affair. A Black Cats side fighting for survival will likely prove stern competition, though depending on results elsewhere this weekend, Dick Advocaat’s side could already be safe by the time they roll up to the Emirates in midweek – a scenario that could prove advantageous to the Gunners’ main men as they attempt to clinch second spot behind Chelsea.

Gomis late show puts Swans on verge of Europa

Swansea are closing in on a Europa League berth after Bafetimbi Gomis’ header in the 86th minute afforded the visitors’ a dramatic victory over Arsenal. The former Lyon frontman was handed 17 minutes at the end of the encounter as he made his first appearance since succumbing to a hamstring injury in Gameweek 32. Now primed to start next week and boasting four goals in as many outings, Gomis (6.5) could be deemed a viable last-gasp differential as Swansea prepare to host Manchester City and visit Crystal Palace in their final two.

Swansea complemented their third win on the trot with back-to-back clean sheets. In light Sergio Aguero’s red-hot form, a shut-out next week against the Sky Blues looks a little far-fetched, yet Crystal Palace’s recent paucity of goals (one in four fixtures) works in the favour of Swansea’s rearguard for that tie.

How much should we be thinking about GW38 with our GW37 planning?

With lots of rotation should we even bother planning?

Personally I'm considering Koscielny in for the double just so I have another defender with a decent fixture in GW38 but he could easily be rotated.

Lots of people have both Panti and PVA. Given that Sunderland face two of the most attacking sides in the league at the moment, and are hardly watertight themselves, is it that smart an idea to play both? Or would it actually be better to spread the risk?

Is it finally time to ditch Hazard? Surely it makes more sense to hold Silva ahead of Hazard.

May potentially be rested this week and GW 38 will be vs a Sunderland team (potentially) fighting for their life.

Is it last chance saloon for big points this week? People chasing in GW38 may find it tough given that hit for players for a once off GW are hard to call and esp GW38 being such a lottery. Should people go all out this week?

Question for Jawain. Going against the grain and captaining Sanchez in an attempt to have a differential cost him badly this week. Will he grab the bull by the horns again this week with a differential pick or play to the old adage 'punt on players, not captains'?

I'll answer that now to keep the cast on message. They were incredible. Nearly two hour gig inc encore. Such fun people, full of jokes and anectoes. There was a tribute to Harrison Ford from their female singer (gig was on May 4), plus Stevie Jackson did a great Van Halen/John Lennon cover. He always seems to do odd covers at their gigs.

This is the fourth time I've seen them (Bowlie weekender 99/Brighton a couple of years after and Bristol 4 yrs ago) and this was the best.

Finally - the light show and visuals are great by the way.

Love that album too. One of my favourite bands.. on a similar theme of DC greats my favourite gig of all time is a dead heat between DC legends Fugazi in 1989 at the Zap Club Brighton. Second best ever gig was John Spencer Blues Explosion at Belle and Sebastian's Bowlie Weekender in 1999.

The age old form v fixtures question. Is Kane worth holding onto ahead of a great looking fixture against Hull even though he and more-so Spurs are terribly out of form?

Smooth week for Team SL 😎

Rough - my transfers. Ditched Fabregas and Henderson for Sanchez and Ozil - Fabregas and Henderson scored 11 and Sanchez and Ozil 4. Particularly annoying as I delayed Fabregas to Sanchez the week before, which would have gained me 12 points.

Smooth - kept Silva and Terry and captained Aguero.

Effect on rank - 90 points takes me back into the top 5k (4.2k).

I sold Mata as part of a hit to get Sanchez and Ozil in. Also bought in Gomez who got an assist on my bench alongside his teammates Panti and PVA.

Having Aguero (c), Silva, Terry and Schmeichel made it a good week though 🙂

      1. Not going with my gut and bringing in Kolarov still pains me! And whats more picking Ozil over Silva was a really stupid move in hindsight!

      2. Not to bad dropped 65 places.

      3. That bad decisions stay with me far longer than they should do. Two days later and I'm still struggling to comes to terms with it. I could have got my first 100 point score! Argh!

Benched 27 points from Schmeichel, Gomez, Duff and PVA, and as I am 7 points away from the top 1k, it really could be deciding my season.

      Lesson learned:
Always play players with something to play for.
Don't fear the double up with an inform team (played Ospina over Schmeichel because I have Schlupp)
Don't play a defender which has the fixture (che) (played Skrtel over Duff and PVA)

      Can't complain more because I got 91 points 🙂

Took a 4 point hit to get Sanchez which didn't pay off but should do over the DGW. Fortunately, I financed the move with Grealish when the alternative was Albrighton. Henderson and Coutinho were the players to make way.

Captained Aguero as most did. Along with Silva and Kolarov the City game got me 75 points. Sent me from 9k to 6k despite the rest of the team coming in with 24(-4)

      1. Best GW score ever, I think! Captaining Kun of course, but differential was Silva + high scores for all defenders.
      2. Halved rank from 2600 ish to 1342
      3. None of the moves I did for the GW actually contributed to the good score!

      1) Was about to do Silva to Sanchez for free, but instead I assumed taking a hit just to keep the City player for the QPR game, though not wise at first, would be best thing to do. Furthermore, even if I took a hit to get the Chilean and Tekkers in, keeping faith in the likes of Wasileswki and Henderson even when their prices when going down paid off.

      2) 96 points, GW rank of 25k as I keep going up: went from 90k to 20k in the last 5/6 GWs. Dreaming about a top 10k now.

      3) Even if I drafted in Sanchez to protect myself from his high ownership (his big haul against Hull hurt me considerably), yet again keeping faith on players that had been underperforming proved to be a masterstroke, as they became solid differentials. With that said, though sometimes annoying, being patient really is the way to go.

      1. Ospina - got him in GW35 & benched Myhill, struggling to fund 3rd Arsenal player now whereas Bernard to Bellerin would have released funds nicely. The ballance of my team is wrong now.

The smooth - Aguero and Silva come good

      2. Droopped out of top 5k last wk but up to 3.8 now.
      3. Avoid keeper transfers unless you have to

Was 2nd in the world and 27 points off number 1.

Decided to gamble and captain Sanchez over Aguero. The rest is history...

Now 40 points off the lead, 6th in the world and don't stand a chance of winning it all

Lesson learned: Aguero loves playing QPR and that GW 35 wasn't the week to gamble on captaincy.

      **NO SILVA LINING**

Having successfully chased down a 68 point deficit in 4 weeks to lead my ML, I went:
      Sterling - > Sanchez
      Terry - > PVA

I was planning on getting in Silva for Sterling all week, to cover my 2 rivals and at the last minute went for Sanchez and downgraded Terry for PVA in anticipation of the DGW.

Needless to say I got burned by Terry scoring, PVA bench points and no Silva cover.
Back down to 3rd and 17 points behind Main Rival 🙁

My midfield: Hazard, Cambiasso, Ramsey, Sanchez(C) = 11

      1. What was your move of success or failure?
failure - played saint def, and place hull def ahead of sunderland def in sub
success - both Yoshida and Bruce are not featured, auto sub PVA

      2. What effect did it have on your rank?
      assuming 5 points diff 2,839 vs 3,259

      3. What have you learned from the move?
its hard to predict cs, i recall during start of the season
i benched duff and he outscore my playing def 🙁

      1) Bought Gomez and Alexis and ditched Hazard and Sterling. The moves have not only resulted in a swing of 3 points, but also freed up some funds for my move(s) ahead giving me 2 extra DGW'ers

      2) I jumped from joint 4th to 2nd in the world

      3) Player reputation should never be given preference over recent form

Failure: Benching Panti for Krul and Ings for Eriksen

Dropped Azpilicueta for Kolarov and scored 103 points this week. It felt so dirty and so good all at the same time.
Also Mata stepping up to take the peno was a nice bonus, one of my few differentials

Bringing in Kolarov for a hit was a massive success( for Moreno), 75 points from just my City trio was absolutely fantastic 😀 Aguero(C), Silva and Kolarov.

Along with a nice Mata penalty amongst other goal scorers, a score of 114(-8) propelled me into the top 100k (well, just outside on 103k), from just inside the top 200k. So a nice 100k jump albeit be in the outer ranks of FPL.

One of the best, if not the best GW I've had this season! Would've been better had I played my transferred in Panti instead of Myhill!

      3. Hits work out quite nicely sometimes 😉

We begin last weekend with the Benteke bonanza. With 3mil in the bank, I could just afford to swap Vardy for him with my free transfer.

Then, I began looking at the weekend fixtures. I though about drafting in an Arsenal defender before realizing I could JUST get enough funds by downgrading a defender to get Alexis Sanchez, but it would literally use every penny of my budget. Fearing a price rise, I made the transfers: Sanchez and Van Aanholt in, Bertrand and Silva out.

Now I'm starting the week with -8. Everyone is captaining Aguero, but Arsenal are at home against Swansea, who have nothing to play for. What do I do? Double-down. Captain Sanchez.

In the end, I made a net loss of 18 points, not including the likely change of captaincy to Aguero. My ranking dropped by about 6k.

I'm still looking at my best ever season of FPL, but it's because I resisted making impulsive moves like those. Plan your transfer, walk away, and come back tomorrow. If it still makes sense, then do it.

I did Hazard to Silva this week.

The transfer helped me hit 100 points this week and move from 10,072 to 6,091 OR.

      1. Success! Brought in Silva, Ozil and Dawson for -8. I had to downgrade Bertrand to Dawson to fulfil the transfer of Sterling > Silva. Ozil was brought in for the upcoming DGW so wasn't expecting much initially from him anyway. However Silva justified the -8 alone as well as (K)un!
      2. green arrow - up by a third of my prior rank

I did Henderson + Kane > Navas + Benteke for free.

But then I changed my captain from Hazard to Aguero which was good until I went on the site Saturday afternoon to find out I did not press the confirm button. So I got 4 points instead of 46 for my captain.

      As a result I dropped from 7k to 9k.

Stats are good, he won't be rested/rotated and has two fixtures to get a penalty

Sanchez is the most explosive player in the game, except maybe Aguero. Playing twice...

    Morning all.

    Team currently:

    Panti

    Terry Skrtel Clyne

    Haz Sanchez Silva Hendo

    Kane Kun Benteke

    // Albright/Hutton/Cdaws

    Thinking:

    Clyne&Hendo out for Bellerin&Caz/Rambo (-4)

    or

    Kane&Haz out for Ozil/Rambo/Caz (-4)

    Thoughts?

Sunderland at home is the type of game Sanchez has dominated all season. Swans, as they showed last night, are no pushovers. Has to be Alexis by quite a long way.

To be fair if those 2 games were in isolation I'd probably captain Kun.

Need some help here. I have Ospina Giroud and Alexis already. Two other forwards that I have are Kun and Kane. I am looking at these few options:

    A. Giroud, Herrera -> Vardy/Ulloa, Silva
    B. Giroud, Herrera -> Benteke, Silva
    C. Giroud, Herrera -> Vardy/Ulloa, Ramsey/Cazorla/Ozil
    D. Giroud, Herrera -> Benteke, Ramsey/Cazorla/Ozil

    Any advice? Thanks 😉

Looking at Leicester forward for Sunderland and QPR games. But the Silva temptation is pretty strong 🙁

So you want to get rid of Giroud and Herrera?

    3. Doolittle

Why would you sell Giroud, especially if you aren't bringing in another Arsenal player in A and B?

      1. Mark-O
        • 9 Years

Giroud is less appealing than Ramsey/Ozil. Also, I can't do a single switch from Herrera->Silva due to shortage of small $! 🙁

Benteke is good against Burnley, but Leicester might go all the way against Sunderland and QPR. A little worried that Arsenal might end up like Chelsea and Liverpool dgw with little pts. 🙁

    There was a reason I bought Ozil ... I don't own Giroud!

The theory was that he would cover any points Giroud got as I presumed Ozil would assist any Giroud goals. And as all around me in the ML had Giroud I figured I had that covered.

Method to the madness or just madness! I'm now thinking drop Ozil and bring in Cazorla and do away with the above theory.

    More madness?

So this is my team for the DGW. Any more changes needed? Is my bench properly sorted?

    ---------------Schmeichel---------------
    PvA-----------Koschielny-------Moreno
    Ramsey---Sanchez---Silva---Hazard
    Benteke--------Kane-----------Aguero

    Myhill; Schlupp, Boyd, Hutton

Next week I'm doing Kane------>Vardy and that it is I think.

He should start and hopefully Brenton also see's that. But I think it's worth the risk as I don't expect LEI to keep their clean sheet.

Pretty much covered for the next GW.

    A) Save transfer and start Bertrand (AVL)
    B) Save transfer and start Downing (EVE)
    C) Use the transfer to sell one of them

Been a while since I did a full RMT but here goes:

    Schmeichel
    Ivanovic Kolarov Cameron
    Sanchez Ramsey Hazard Albrighton
    Kun Tekkers Vardy

    Bench: Myhill, Okore, Duff

4.2 itb which is enough for Vardy to Giroud, but with Giroud's poor form and Vardy's great fixtures, I'm reconsidering. Cazorla? Ozil?

Keep Vardy, ridiculous value. I would say your bench is weak with Hazard at risk, I would do Duff > Mert/ Kos
