The Digest – Gameweek 36

Our last look back at Gameweek 36 brings City’s red-hot frontman, Sunderland’s improving form and Eden Hazard’s possible pitch time for the final two fixtures under analysis.

The Player

QPR rolled up to the Etihad looking to upset the odds and stall their drop into the Championship last Sunday. By the time the final whistle went, Chris Ramsey’s side had been condemned to relegation by the ruthless brilliance of Sergio Aguero, as the little Argentine served up three goals and a pair of assists in an emphatic 6-0 win.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men have now racked up 14 goals in the last five matches since returning to a lone forward system, compared to just seven strikes in the previous five when utilising a two-man frontline. Without a partner beside him, Aguero has flourished as the focal point of City’s attack and played a part in ten of those 14 strikes, courtesy of eight goals and a couple of assists.

Prior to this switch, the Argentine had only netted in more than two successive league outings on one occasion this season – a three-match scoring run over Gameweeks 6-8. Pellegrini’s change of tactics has seen Aguero score in each of the last five now, with his tally now standing at 25 goals for the season, his highest haul since arriving on these shores from Atletico Madrid.

There’s no doubt that Aguero, on his day, is head and shoulders about any other forward as a Fantasy prospect, in terms of both consistency and explosive potential. Although Pellegrini’s penchant for a 4-2-2-2 remains an issue, the last few fixtures may have gone some way to persuading the City manager that his side, and star player, are far more devastating when Aguero is allowed to maraud up front on his own.

The Team

A weekend trip to Everton looked far from straightforward, given that the Toffees had racked up four straight wins at Goodison without conceding a single goal. Sunderland emerged from Merseyside with three points in the bag and turned in a display that strengthens our faith in their assets ahead of double Gameweek 37.

The 2-0 triumph brings the Black Cats into focus at both ends of the pitch. A second clean sheet in five has ensured Costel Pantilimon and Patrick van Aanholt lead the way for transfers in amongst keepers and defenders respectively as our backlines are restructured ahead of clashes against Leicester and Arsenal.

Further up the field, the battle to beat the drop has presented us with a handful of differentials. Jordi Gomez’ assist at Goodison highlights the Spaniard’s growing confidence in the centre of the park – the Spaniard has now racked up 20 points in the last couple of outings and his spot-kick duties bring him firmly onto our radars. The third most transferred in midfielder this week, he remains in under 1% of FPL sides.

Up front, whilst Connor Wickham has drawn blanks in the last two, Jermain Defoe and forgotten man Danny Graham have both chipped in with a goal and assist. Graham has only started those last couple of matches under Advocaat but as the central figure in the front three, he’s staking a late claim for inclusion at a price of just 4.7.

Certainly, a home clash with in-form Leicester and trip to the Emirates are no easy tasks but Advocaat’s side will approach the double with confidence on the back of two straight wins. Given it’s the first time this season they’ve managed such a feat, their form bodes well as the Wearsiders attempt to pull off another great escape.

The Talking Point

After grinding out a 1-1 draw with Liverpool, Jose Mourinho’s post-match comments have sent waves through the Fantasy community.

Having admitted that the likes of Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas are “playing too much”, the Blues boss is looking to hand a number of youngsters a rare opportunity at West Brom next weekend.

Bearing in mind that Arsenal are now braced for a double, Hazard owners have a dilemma as they look to take advantage of the Gunners’ pair of fixtures.

Certainly, last night’s shock home loss to Swansea lessens the prospect of Arsene Wenger rotating next week. A draw against United and home win over Sunderland would clinch a top three spot, thus avoiding the hassle of a Champions League play-off in early August, and therefore allowing Arsenal to rotate at home to West Brom in Gameweek 38 ahead of their FA Cup Final against Villa.

Moving on Hazard for an Arsenal midfielder and then bringing back the Belgian is a viable option, then, and is strengthened by that fact that Mourinho has confirmed he’ll roll out the big guns for the season finale at home to Sunderland. Chelsea are the only side left unbeaten at home in England’s four divisions and bearing in mind that the Black Cats emerged from the Bridge victorious last term, the Blues boss will be determined to seek revenge.

Hazard’s slip in form is a concern, though, and backs up his manager’s suggestion that he’s a little fatigued. The Belgian failed to fire a single attempt against Liverpool on Sunday and has produced just four shots in as many matches as the champions ease up for the summer.

Second-guessing the intentions of top-flight managers is never easy at the best of times but at this point of the season, it’s nigh on impossible. Jose’s mind games do seem to be over for the time being at least, though, and Sunday’s post-match heads-up could ultimately prove beneficial as we prepare to gamble on the final double Gameweek of the campaign.

Broke into the top 3k yesterday so want to really push on..what is best option?

    A. Moreno and Toby > Kos and PVA
    B. Terry Moreno Vardy > PVA 4.8 def and Giroud (-4)
    C. Kane and Skrtel > Giroud and PVA
    D. Moreno and Vardy > Bellerin and Defoe

Basically is Giroud worth -4 over kos?
Or lose Kane but he has Hull at home next?

I'm not sure why last week has changed opinions on Silva.

Ok, he scored very well in a game that they were always going to score well in but before that haul he was the obvious out for an Arsenal mid.

Swansea have just beaten Arsenal and kept something like 13 clean sheets, they are not going to be so accommodating as QPR and seems like points chasing

Gotta have a 3rd Arsenal player yeah? I'm not too big on Giroud, but if you're up there at the top, you might want him as his ownership is high and all that.

      Krul ➡ Ospina?

And also, Ramsey looked very attacking last night.

You need a 3rd Arsenal. Simon has Giroud so has you covered there. You've got one over on him with Coutinho I think for the Palace game.
You need to be careful as he has PVA too.

Has anyone looked at the possibilty of a Madrid/Barca final in the UCL game? I have and its a near on impossibilty - if you want CR7, Messi and a Neymar/Suarez up top to be able to get 11 players out, given the price of players.

With this in mind tonight I plan on bringing in the 3.0 mil Juventus GK and Gaudino of Bayern to my bench. It means I am going without a GK.

My bench would consist of GK Nunes 3.0 mil, Gaudino 4.5, Weiser 4.5, Wallace 4.5

    My team

    GK Rubinho
    DEF Rafinhia, Varane, Bernat, Chielini,
    MID Kroos, James, Thiago
    FWD Messi, CR7, Suarez

With the 6 subs allowed for the final I would be able to get 10 players from Barca and Madrid out

Fabregas likelier to start than Hazard?

I'm thinking of benching one and playing the other... Tempting fate, I know!

I wouldn't ditch Coutinho as they host Palace this weekend. Is there any way you can squeeze either Kos or Giroud in?

Who is the best option for 3rd arsenal player(sanchez and ramsey in hand)? A)Benteke to Giroud(me just transfer in tekker in gw36)
B)Clyne to Koscielny Giroud seems like the better option but with him onli got one shot on target in last 4 games, should kos be my 3rd ars slot?(although concede goal against swansea last game)

Allow me to be the millionth guy to ask some form of this. Leading in my main leagues.

    A. Fab to Ramsey
    B. Fab to Ozil
    C. Fab to Caz
    D. Fab and Vardy to Gomez and Giroud (-4)
    E. Fab and Kane to Gomez and Giroud (-4)

In theory, D. But since you're leading and Giroud's form is poor, I'd go A.

Players to get from Sunderland for DGW?

    1. Doolittle

I'm going without as it would require a hit. I'd get PVA if it was free.

        This.

Since it's uncertain which of their strikers are more likely to score, I'm leaning towards Gomez (due to his PK duties) and PvA, which I already own. But I wouldn't take a hit as it's too much of a gamble. Plus, their last game is at Chelsea, mind you.

        1. Doolittle
          • 11 Years

Yeah it would be a hit just for this week. I don't like being down on DGW numbers, but I think the sensible move is to just stick without a hit.

How many DGWers are you playing, TD?

I'm currently on 3 (PvA, Bellerin and Sanchez) but might have to take a hit to get one of Giroud or Ramsey (along with Graham/Defoe or Gomez). What do you reckon?

Just the 3 Arsenal for me (Koscielny, Sanchez and Ozil). Who would you be ditching for the 3rd Arsenal? I'd feel very insecure not having 3 Arsenal.

Since I have to take a hit to get one of Ramsey or Giroud, I'm thinking of Henderson and Benteke to either A) Ramsey and Defoe/Graham or B) Gomez and Giroud. What do you say?

Tough one, probably A. I'm not keen on Sunderland strikers, but Giroud isn't on form, and Ramsey is much better than Gomez.

Haha, it really is a toughie. If I could get anyone, I'd get Ramsey. But as you say, I don't fancy any Sunderland striker (as it's pretty much a lottery), so I might end up with B. After all, Giroud is due and Gomez is on pens...

    Guys,

Having PvA, Belle and Sanchez already, should I offload Henderson + Benteke to:

    A) Ramsey + Graham

    or

    B) Gomez + Giroud

    Both for a hit.

    Cheers!

Ramsey and Defoe if you can afford it. Otherwise B.

        Cheers for the reply, BL!

I can afford any Sunderland striker. But are they worth the investment, though? Other than a PK, I'm unsure they will score against Leicester and/or Arsenal. And then they play Chelsea at the Bridge...

Which DGWers are you getting yourself?

        1. Ludo
          • 10 Years

Will be benching Sunderland players in GW38 for sure.

Its a punt, but one worth taking IMO - just look at Hull in their DGW - teams fighting for their lives often pull of surprise results, as Leicester have done, and Sunderland did at Everton.

I'm wavering... Have Panti, Ozil and Sanchez now, will likely get two more for a hit. Currently thinking Bellerin and Defoe.

            • 10 Years
            9 years, 1 month ago

Yes. It's exactly because of Hull that I'm leaning towards that. Will definitely take a hit, so all I have to decide now is whether to get Ramsey + Defoe/Graham or Gomez + Giroud!

As for you, I guess that's pretty much all you can do. Unless you fancy doubling-up on Sunderland's defence? If so, PvA and Giroud could come in. But I like what you might do, especially if you have a good bench to come on for Defoe at the Bridge.

Guys, I need some opinions, I'm 30 behind in my mini league and have 8 different players from the leader, would you go for the obvious captain of Sanchez this week or take a gamble on someone else?

30 points is not really much over two weeks but do you think it's a week too early to risk it?

      1. Shane H

I was going to gamble on Rambo.

Only issue I have is that if I go early and get it wrong the last week is a write off, if I wait till the last week the unpredictable nature of it could work in my favour.

Really am in two minds over the timing.

            Thanks, it's looking that way.

The only thing stopping me is that if those 8 players can close around 20 then it leaves me with 11 to beat on the last day when all sorts of captains and restings come into play.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
