Moving Target

Moving Target – Micah Richards

Following the expiry of his contract with Manchester City, Micah Richards signed a four-deal with Aston Villa on a free transfer last week. The right-back sought the promise of first-team football, having recorded just ten appearances on loan at Fiorentina last term.

The History

The Birmingham-born Richards trained at Oldham Athletic’s youth academy for one year before making the switch to Manchester City at 14 years of age. After spending four years in their youth system, Richards earned his first senior appearance for the Sky Blues in 2005, replacing Danny Mills in a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal. He went on to make a further 15 appearances in all competitions that campaign, netting his first goal in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Richards established himself as a regular starter over the next couple of seasons, tallying 63 appearances and one goal in all competitions. His cachet rose as a result of his commanding performances at right-back, earning him consecutive nominations for the PFA Young Player of the Year award in the 2006/07 and 2007/08 campaigns.

Richards’ best season in the top flight arrived when City sealed the Premier League crown in 2012; the robust full-back was nominated for the Manchester outfit’s Player of the Year award and notched more assists (five) than any other defender in the league. From the 2012/13 season, however, Argentine international Pablo Zabaleta became the first-choice right-back at the club, demoting Richards to bench duties.

Having chalked up just nine league outings in the previous two terms, Richards joined Fiorentina on a season-long loan deal in September 2014, ending his City career with nine goals and 14 assists across 246 appearances. Unfortunately, the manager at that time, Vincenzo Montella, elected to employ three centre-backs in a 3-5-2 formation that season, limiting Richards to just ten Serie A outings.

Off the back of three appearances for the England U21s, Richards became the youngest defender (18 years, four months and 22 days) to start a match for the senior squad when he played in a friendly against Holland in November 2006. He went on to record 11 caps during Steve McClaren’s brief tenure as the Three Lions boss, before falling out of favour when Fabio Capello was at the helm. To date, Richards has registered one goal and two assists in 13 appearances for England.

The Prospects

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Villa head coach Tim Sherwood cited Richards’ adaptability as a key factor in his acquisition:

“He is a player who can play in a number of positions. He can play right-back, centre-half and also in a three man defence so his versatility is another real positive. When I spoke with Micah it was clear how determined he is to get his career back on track and I’ve every confidence he will recapture the form and quality he displayed before he moved over to Italy. He had a lot of choices but I’m delighted he chose Aston Villa.”

In his last full season as starter, Richards notched one goal and six assists in 36 appearances across all competitions. Considering that he’s still only 26, there’s every chance that Richards could rediscover the form that had him earmarked as one of England’s top defensive prospects.

From a Fantasy perspective, Richards could well present an enticing route into Villa’s rearguard should he rediscover his best form under Sherwood. For all their failings last season, the West Midlands club still managed a reasonable ten clean sheets, so there’s scope to invest in a low-priced Villa defender when the fixtures are favourable.

In spite of the fact that Villa have two right-backs on their roster (Alan Hutton and Matthew Lowton), Sherwood preferred to deploy winger Leandro Bacuna in that role during the final stretch of last season. Although the Netherlands U21 international served as a potent attacking outlet – notching five assists in ten starts – his relative lack of positional training often left spaces for opposing offenses to exploit.

Certainly, Sherwood’s tactics afford his full-backs plenty of leeway in terms of attacking and given that Bacuna admitted last month that right-back wasn’t his “top position”, Richards’ rampaging runs down the flank could quickly become a feature of Villa’s play. Alternatively, he offers an option in the heart of the backline, though it’s fair to say that there are no shortage of centre-halves for Sherwood to choose from, with Ron Vlaar looking nailed-on, providing he remains injury-free.

Having conceded the third most number of goals last season (57), it’s likely that Villa’s defensive starters are likely to remain around the 4.5 mark. If Richards is placed in the same bracket and plays a prominent role in pre-season, Fantasy managers might be tempted to snap him up early, with the opening schedule smiling relatively kindly on Sherwood’s side. Aside from a home tie against Manchester United in Gameweek 2, the Villains boast a strong opening six fixtures (bou, MUN, cry, SUN, lei, WBA) that could allow them to hit the ground running in their first full season under the former Tottenham manager.

What chance of Sanchez being reallocated as a forward?

I'd say minimal. He almost always plays wide midfield. If Walcott managed years of being a mid, I can't see why Sanchez can't.

If they had to classify Sanchez as a striker, they would have to do the same for Hazard, Chadli and
      Moses.

      Would kill off the game.

Yeah, although it's the one position we're not really getting linked to anyone. Think we need to shift fletcher and graham first before we can bring someone in. Defoe is fine, but I wouldn't want to rely on him as no.1 all season, plus wickham is hit and miss. Def need someone else.

4 goals 2 assists in 17 games is barely cheap 3rd striker form Sess. Though you're right about the others.
Maybe a clean sweep of strikers sign 2 and get 2 on loan with a bit of luck.

Ha, it's cool. Just thought might as well link it to flesh the story out a little.

We're in the marketing for a left sided midfield/winger plus creative player for no.10 role and downing fits the bill on both counts, so guess it's an easy link to make. Think it would be hard to get west ham to sell though.

Which highly owned players did you avoid this season? How did it work out for you?

Eriksen was the only one I avoided all season really, and it worked out very well. A lot had him for his DGW and good fixtures beyond but his form tailed off dramatically.

I avoided Fabregas all season. Hard to say how it worked. If I had him it probably would have been at the expense of Hazard. So though Hazard outscored him, who knows what I would have done with the extra cash.

Only by seeing how they do the following year. Perhaps if he is played as the team's first choice and other players train or are brought in to support him.

I suspect the fact that he tailed off so quickly suggests it might have just been a gigantic purple patch. Although i imagine you should be considering his physique, his game awareness etc. A lot of pundits say he's well suited to be a good player for a long time, but i haven't seen much of him to know. I don't think he'll become a great.

I agree. I still think he is a good player though, and since he is so young obviously has time to improve.

I do think fatigue may become an issue for him this season, with England U21s atm and spurs EL, BPL, Cups etc.

Wait and see. He had a very good percentage of chances taken. It might be that hes an excellent finisher or that he hit a purple patch of form. Hes young so for me 12-15 goals this season would be a reasonable success. Then his third year will tell us where his true level is.

Sounds really simple, but by watching them play. Can often tell when someone has real long term prospects by the smallest things in the way they play. Goals, assists, star performances etc can all be warped by opposition, team form etc but just scouting them gives quite an accurate gauge from my experience

I hope Dele Alli gets a chance at Spurs this season. I don't think they are that strong in central midfield and can see him forcing his way in there if given an opportunity.

So, is Dimitri Payet really coming to West Ham?

He has performed very well in the Ligue and the Champions League (was a keeper in my CL fantasy team two years back), plus he plays regularly in the France national teams. Arsenal used to sign these kind of players three or four years back- I'd say it would really be a coup.

Will easily be the highest priced West Ham player, with his past history of returns of both goals and assist.

Whether someone would want a 7.5 West Ham midfielder is a different thing altogether.

He is very good, will have to see where he fits in. With his assist potential, you'd also want to pick the striker ahead of him, especially if it is Charlie Austin.

I do not want a Aston Villa defender at the start of the season, because the only defenders I'd ever get for their attacking returns are Ivanovic and Baines.

As for them improving later defensively and Micah staying fit, why not.

Most midfields will only have room for 2 premium priced - are Hazard/Cesc really the best option to start off with? Those opening 6 really do look tough for attacking returns. Might be worth doubling up on Arsenal or having 1 Arsenal, 1 United if there's a clear choice like Depay or Mata based on pre-season

    1. Saniul
      • 11 Years
      8 years, 12 months ago

Sanchez probably missing the first two weeks (Chile likely to make the SF IMO) makes Hazard a 100% for me.

      Something like.

      Hazard, Depay/Maria/Mata, Mane, 5.5, 4.5 starter-anybody.

        Walcott? Ramsey?

I get Chelsea are the champions and still the best team, but weeks 2-6 is really one of the toughest run of fixtures for attacking returns you'll find imo

        1. Saniul
          • 11 Years

Yes, I'd love to have an Arsenal attacker at the start of the season, but I'd have to say nobody other than Ozil is completely 100% nailed on in that team.

Since four of the five in midfield are guaranteed to look like.

          ---------------------Coquelin---------------------Cazorla
          --xxxxxx----------------------------Ozil--------------------------Sanchez (when back)

and assuming we start a proper no 9 up front...

That's Walcott/Ramsey for one spot as soon as Sanchez returns, that too totally ignoring the presence of Ox and Welbeck.

That said, I could consider Ozil, but only Ozil.

Honestly reckon Theo is gonna be the first choice striker this season. But if he isn't Ramsey really should be alongside Coq imo, and if Wenger really wants to make a bid for the title he should be starting Wilshere ahead of Coq

Can't play Walcott up front at the start of the season, when Sanchez out - meaning Welbeck/Ox and Ramsey and Ozil behind him. Somebody needs to bully and get the balls back in the front four.

                Cazorla and Welbeck can bully.

                Coq/Wilshere Ramsey
                Ozil Cazorla Welbeck
                Theo

                Sanchez in for Welbeck

Giroud will start the season IMO atleast. When you're highest scorer is unavailable at the start of the season, the last thing you'd do is a second highest scorer...

It would be ideal from the FPL point of view that Theo plays (still can't forget Theo (c) in GW38)... I think it is too much of a risk to play him up front at the start of the season itself.

Also, Ramsey will be on the right, Ozil-Cazorla-Coq central. That is how we play.

When fit, Ramsey will always be in the line-up.
Ramsey-Bellerin offers more stability. Walcott-Bellerin would be fireworks, but is defensively too weak.
I expect Walcott to start the season as CF (with hopefully a new CF signing being braught in after a couple of GW).

I did a little vote thing on here last week and everyone said 6, not that this makes it fact but makes me feel like he will be.

He could very well be priced at 5.5 (he certainly wouldn't be worth any more than that, probably not worth more than 5 with the current scoring system tbh), just saying whether or not he's still listed as a Chelsea player will have no effect whatsoever on his starting price.

Hey gang, how are we doing with rotation pairings?

    Here's my first effort. Villa/Southampton:

WBA/Sunderland look the best for fixtures and combined defensive strength imo. Just need some 4.5 options

Yes, that's my preferred rotation at the moment but benching WBA in a rotation may turn frustrating, knowing Pulis' ability to frustrate even the top teams.

Yeah, I have an idea to double up on both and then add a 3rd WBA keeper or defender. Just really need affordable options. Also praying for Brunt to be a defender (highly unlikely) - would use him as my premium option

Most of the time you'll want to play a So'ton defender with a bad fixture over Villa defender with a great fixture.

Agree, over a Villa defender that is. However need to see what defence Southampton are left with at kickoff.
