Moving Target

Moving Target – Micah Richards

Following the expiry of his contract with Manchester City, Micah Richards signed a four-deal with Aston Villa on a free transfer last week. The right-back sought the promise of first-team football, having recorded just ten appearances on loan at Fiorentina last term.

The History

The Birmingham-born Richards trained at Oldham Athletic’s youth academy for one year before making the switch to Manchester City at 14 years of age. After spending four years in their youth system, Richards earned his first senior appearance for the Sky Blues in 2005, replacing Danny Mills in a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal. He went on to make a further 15 appearances in all competitions that campaign, netting his first goal in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Richards established himself as a regular starter over the next couple of seasons, tallying 63 appearances and one goal in all competitions. His cachet rose as a result of his commanding performances at right-back, earning him consecutive nominations for the PFA Young Player of the Year award in the 2006/07 and 2007/08 campaigns.

Richards’ best season in the top flight arrived when City sealed the Premier League crown in 2012; the robust full-back was nominated for the Manchester outfit’s Player of the Year award and notched more assists (five) than any other defender in the league. From the 2012/13 season, however, Argentine international Pablo Zabaleta became the first-choice right-back at the club, demoting Richards to bench duties.

Having chalked up just nine league outings in the previous two terms, Richards joined Fiorentina on a season-long loan deal in September 2014, ending his City career with nine goals and 14 assists across 246 appearances. Unfortunately, the manager at that time, Vincenzo Montella, elected to employ three centre-backs in a 3-5-2 formation that season, limiting Richards to just ten Serie A outings.

Off the back of three appearances for the England U21s, Richards became the youngest defender (18 years, four months and 22 days) to start a match for the senior squad when he played in a friendly against Holland in November 2006. He went on to record 11 caps during Steve McClaren’s brief tenure as the Three Lions boss, before falling out of favour when Fabio Capello was at the helm. To date, Richards has registered one goal and two assists in 13 appearances for England.

The Prospects

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Villa head coach Tim Sherwood cited Richards’ adaptability as a key factor in his acquisition:

“He is a player who can play in a number of positions. He can play right-back, centre-half and also in a three man defence so his versatility is another real positive. When I spoke with Micah it was clear how determined he is to get his career back on track and I’ve every confidence he will recapture the form and quality he displayed before he moved over to Italy. He had a lot of choices but I’m delighted he chose Aston Villa.”

In his last full season as starter, Richards notched one goal and six assists in 36 appearances across all competitions. Considering that he’s still only 26, there’s every chance that Richards could rediscover the form that had him earmarked as one of England’s top defensive prospects.

From a Fantasy perspective, Richards could well present an enticing route into Villa’s rearguard should he rediscover his best form under Sherwood. For all their failings last season, the West Midlands club still managed a reasonable ten clean sheets, so there’s scope to invest in a low-priced Villa defender when the fixtures are favourable.

In spite of the fact that Villa have two right-backs on their roster (Alan Hutton and Matthew Lowton), Sherwood preferred to deploy winger Leandro Bacuna in that role during the final stretch of last season. Although the Netherlands U21 international served as a potent attacking outlet – notching five assists in ten starts – his relative lack of positional training often left spaces for opposing offenses to exploit.

Certainly, Sherwood’s tactics afford his full-backs plenty of leeway in terms of attacking and given that Bacuna admitted last month that right-back wasn’t his “top position”, Richards’ rampaging runs down the flank could quickly become a feature of Villa’s play. Alternatively, he offers an option in the heart of the backline, though it’s fair to say that there are no shortage of centre-halves for Sherwood to choose from, with Ron Vlaar looking nailed-on, providing he remains injury-free.

Having conceded the third most number of goals last season (57), it’s likely that Villa’s defensive starters are likely to remain around the 4.5 mark. If Richards is placed in the same bracket and plays a prominent role in pre-season, Fantasy managers might be tempted to snap him up early, with the opening schedule smiling relatively kindly on Sherwood’s side. Aside from a home tie against Manchester United in Gameweek 2, the Villains boast a strong opening six fixtures (bou, MUN, cry, SUN, lei, WBA) that could allow them to hit the ground running in their first full season under the former Tottenham manager.

Cech is 33. Jens Lehman joined Arsenal at 33, and won 3 trophies and went a whole season unbeaten

When the seasons starts, Schweinie will actually be 31, whereas Cech turned 33 last month, and 33-year-old GK usually has twice as many strong years left as a 31-year-old midfielder.

Neither do 16/17 other teams do you suggest they all stop competing also? There is still champions league place and europa to play for. If you build a good enough young team you could challenge for the title. Look at the way Wenger did it at Arsenal.

Cavani / Ibra / Tevez / Benzema if they can get one then they should be good enough to challenge for the title

In our ups and downs, we've always had good strikers in the last 20 years, even Adebayor scoring 30 goals. I think many fans have come to expect too much.

I disagree on this point. The main issue for me is the wages. We have a strict wage structure in place, and paying so much could very well mean we can't afford to pay wages in other areas. I don't think you'd consider a good signing if it meant we didn't buy a DM, CB or striker.

Hey Rupert! It's been a while but I remember the Harwood Arms had some exquisite eggs. I'd also recommend the Southampton Arms for delicious home brews of ale/ciders as well as their food (their eggs and pork baps are immense!). The Atlas in West Brompton does some great food as well.

          Hope this helps 🙂

Ha. I work at the Atlas from time to time. Great food, but the Anglesea Arms is where I work full time which is a sister pub. The food is a big step up at the Anglesea.
I've done the Harwood Arms many times, even just last week. It gets an immense 9.5.
Can't wait to go to Southampton Arms. I'll check it right now.

Where do you rate Cech in all time PL GK rankings?

2nd after Schmeichel? Competing with VDS and Seaman I guess but I'd say he beats both of them.

Yup, definitely in the top three. The dissatisfaction of so many Arsenal fans is mind-blowing. The guy is a PL legend and still has a good few years ahead of him. It's not a huge sum and it's an improvement on what they have, a significant one. I really don't understand the love for Ospina over Cech.

5 years ahead of him? I have no idea why people can make assumptions like that about a 33-year old.

Not all keepers can keep their level at that age... not even some world-class keepers. Like Casillas.

If he fails, and Leno is snapped by a big club by then, it is a lose-lose.

But the guy is world class. We spent £10m on Fraser Forster (not sure what Saints were thinking there). Liverpool spent £9m on Simon Mignolet (!). Sunderland spent £9m on Craig Gordon. Spurs spent £12m on Lloris. It's really, when contextualised, not that much.

    -----------------------Coq---------------------------

C'mon now... he has made many, many mistakes over the last few seasons.

The defensive midfield role had been neglected season after season, and it was only immense luck that we managed to bring in Coq as a stop-gap.

We started last season with one fit centre back, which was ludicrous.

The season before we started the season with Giroud as our only striker.

He has played Ozil on the wings instead of a 10 far too much.

He spent loads of money on Debuchy, when we had Jenkinson and Bellerin (who every Arsenal fan had been waiting for anyway).

He spent loads of money on Chambers, and who knows where he is meant to fit in.

It is only this season that we decided to play conservatively in tough away game. Why did it take so long!? Even then we started the second half and Ramsey went walkabouts.

He still fails to make any subs before 70 mins, and isn't adaptable.

Even now, how much hope do you hold that he will fill the positions that we need to compete?

He has his positive attributes of course, but there has been MANY questionable decisions that rightfully created doubt.

Too much now, like seriously. You're being really weird now.

We totally need Debuchy, he is our first-choice RB and should remain so. Jenkinson was never reliable whenever he played - except the early part of 2012/13 season.

Chambers is our future CB, and if you think he is a waste signing, you're wrong.

I'm happy to be proven wrong on Chambers.

I thought Jenkinson was exceptional when he covered for a lengthy Sagna injury, and I thought between him and Bellerin we would have been dandy.

I'm don't think I'm being unfairly critical on Wenger. Debauchy talks like our good end of season form somehow proves wrong those who thought Wenger should have moved on, whereas I say we are still well within reason to be doubtful.

WS , Figure you are a little younger. An intelligent lad though , no doubt.
But seriously , Jenkinson , he will only cut it at a lower team. He did not cut it at Arse. and he will not cut it anywhere else , despite a fair season at WH.

Arse went through a period with no money , where players like Arshavan were our big buys. Wenger controlled Arsenal through this period and despite all the lols , achieving top 4 was really a huge achievment .
As a long standing Arsenal supporter I and most loyal supporters understood that this was going to be a testing time, and we accepted it.

Wenger has done more for Arsenal than any other manager could ever dream of and indeed for English football - SAF even said this some years ago.
Damn -- do you want to go back to the chants of the early 90's BORING ARSENAL ? Well , do you ???

I agree with absolutely everything you said. However, I also think Tony Pulis is an amazing manager, but only at a certain level. I think Pulis can do things with promoted clubs that very few managers possibly could, and should rightfully regarded as a wonderful manager, but you wouldn't say he should be in charge of a top 6 team.

I see this as akin to Wenger. I think he can get some decent players together and create a good team. I reckon he could take Pool and Spurs and get them in the top 4. However, I don't think he is a manager, nowadays, that has what is necessary to compete with the elite. I think he will struggle for the PL, and I don't think he'll ever win the CL.

I think those who boo him are a disgrace, but I didn't think he should sign a contract extension. I think we should have shook hands, said thank you, given him a statue and looked for a manager that could take us to the next level. I think these sentiments are shared by most of the 'Wenger Out' clan, that are unfortunately represented in the media as those who take it too far.

I still think he has something to offer , for another season or two and would love that he had the chance to finish on a high note. He has given his all to the club and transformed them from a boring top club to one of the more entertaining top clubs in world football..Yeah I witnessed all the good times , so the bad times were easier to endure. Lets enjoy this season and then we will reflect again.

But Sanchez has also had success in a 2 up front for Chile.

I think playing in a 2 in that formation would be perfect for Sanchez, because it straddles the line between winger and striker. He could avoid engagement with centre backs, but yet maintain an advanced position.

But Chile's fullbacks stay up all the time, and that's how the diamond keeps a compact shape. I'm not sure we can risk something like that with Mertesacker as CB.

I don't recall Liverpool's full backs being any more advanced than ours are now.

You'd just need Sanchez or Theo covering a some space like Sturridge and Suarez took turns doing.

Yes, Suarez is a top-10 player in the world. Wenger knew that, tried to sign him.

Sanchez is good, Walcott is good, but Suarez is another level.

After all, a player's quality is the most important thing in the game.

Major difference. Sturridge & Suarez are natural strikers. Sanchez and Walcott just aren't.

Sanchez is much better coming from the left (as he proved in his debut season) and Walcott is better from the RW position.

I don't think so. Sanchez and Walcott are both runners. The same sort of player, only Theo is quicker, and Alexis is much more talented. They need a focal point, and Ozil can't carry a Premier League team. That's why they need Giroud or the like.

That's right. It's not Giroud or Walcott.

Its not an easy fix for Wenger . He is one of the most loyal Managers around. He's not one to discard players that have been in the mix for awhile. My take is that , up front will stay the same.
Yeah, would love a striker like Benzema , Higuain , a little less. But there is not many a side , probably none , that can get as many goals from their mids as Arse

I think Walcott should be primarily used as a striker.

Giroud, Walcott and Welbeck, with Sanchez in a pinch - that's a perfectly good set of options. Chelsea won the league with Costa playing less than 2/3 of the matches this season - Sanchez with a Premier League season under his belt is more than capable of scoring the big goals for Arsenal, like Hazard has for Chelsea.

I'm sure Cech earned more at Chelsea than any of our players, he must be taking a pay cut?
Wouldn't believe he would be the club's highest earning player ahead of Ozil, Sanchez and Koscielny...

To be accepted at that age. He is a nice humble player who now, being 33, appreciates the time he has left in the game. I'm sure he would take the hit being the type of guy he is.

Mourinho is such a clever cat, you can't help feeling there is a catch somewhere with Cech. Has he niggly injuries/confidence issues? Is he trouble in the camp, Is Mou a bit ageist? He seems to hate paying players big money/giving longer contracts when they near Frank Lampard vintage. Why would you sell a player who weakens your own squad to improve your main rivals (imo) team. I'm baffled.

Chelsea have not had any problems with the midfield they have, and they finished three spots ahead of the club where they sold him to, and he still is not nailed-on there.

selling mata and signing fabregas was a bit sideways i think.

True. He didn't like his work ethic though so was maybe of the opinion that he wouldn't strengthen UTD. Who knows.

      Because:
      - It sounds like, from what I've read, Abramovich told Cech he could go where he wanted, in respect of his service to the club
      - If he didn't play Courtois, Courtois would have left and Courtois has got 10+
      - Cech wouldn't sign a new contract to be on the bench.
      - Cech had a year left on his contract.
      - Cech wanted to move and wanted to stay in London.
      - The sum was fair. Mourinho likes a good deal - he'd have hated to let Cech go to a rival for free next summer.

Yes, Courtois is better than Cech right now, that's all matters to Mourinho. He just wants the best XI for him...

Makes sense though I would have thought Cech would be happy enough playing 20-odd games a season with Chelsea and 10 plus with the national side - grand way to prolong his career. Must hurt too much being second fiddle.

He's been quoted saying he really didn't want to lose him but it was the owners decision. Then again it may have been a tactic to drive the price up.

If they did not sell us Cech, we would have bought Leno anyway... whereas at Chelsea, Courtois is the undisputed #1 and a damn good keeper.

He just got the club 11 million, who would have got nothing next year.

I can't help but think it is a win-win for Chelsea.

You don't understand how Chelsea work, Jose doesn't have total control of those things.

      1. The club's policy is 1 year extensions for over 30s. Jose is currently trying to persuade them to offer Ivan 3 years (he's 30 and has 1 year left).
      2. The club has a transfer committee that decides on ins and outs but it tries to give Jose what he wants wherever possible. Salah was an Emenalo signing, Costa and Fabregas were wanted by Jose.
      3. The club has a policy of treating players that have given a lot to the club generously. No-one at Chelsea wanted Cech to go to Arsenal but it was felt that he deserved the move that suited him and his family best.

Cech was sold only because we have Courtois and it isn't realistic to expect someone of Cech's calibre to be 2nd choice for the rest of his career. No more or less than that. Take Courtois out of the equation and Cech would be Chelsea's 1st choice for the forseeable future.

An additional advantage to Chelsea is that we'll bring in a homegrown/association trained No. 2 GK (Rob Green maybe) and that will free up an overseas player slot in our squad.

Hi lads not around here much but listen to podcast and have been addicted for around 3years n snook into top 10k last season. Just looking for any mini league suggestions for next year, thinking of moving from the 1/2k player ones to small competitive. I have a work one but it's made up of Liverpool fans and they know so little about football it's a breeze every season.

Is Courtois better than Cech? Would Cech have been lobbed from 65 yards by fat Charlie Adam?

Every keeper makes mistakes. Unfortunately for them, their mistakes are the most noticeable and the most punishing. I don't think one goal gives a fair means of comparison.

Courtois in his last season at Atletico was definitely better.

I honestly believe , there's not a helluva lot between them right now ? However Chelsea had to look at the long term. Guess they were a little worried and had to secure Courtois as there were some rumblings pre last season , as I recall.

There is little between them, if anything Cech is slightly better. But Courtois is the next 10 years. Not a player we could let go, really top GKs are few and far between.
