Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Jordan Henderson

Once ridiculed for the sizeable transfer fee he fetched (in the region of £20 million) upon his move to Liverpool back in the summer of 2011, Jordan Henderson has since matured into arguably the Reds’ most consistent performer.

The all-action midfielder is one those Fantasy assets that’s capable of quietly amassing a strong points haul to little fanfare, as evidenced by the fact he recorded the best total score among Liverpool’s squad despite rarely being considered as a Fantasy option. A peripheral figure for many years, Henderson is now firmly on our Fantasy radars for the upcoming campaign.

Key Factors

    • Henderson recorded his highest ever Fantasy Premier League points haul last term (162), beating his previous best (133) from the 2010/11 season. The Sunderland-born midfielder achieved this by virtue of a career-high number of goals (six) and assists (ten) – only five midfielders chalked up more assists. Despite operating from a deeper role than his more glamorous midfield team-mates, Henderson outscored both Raheem Sterling (158) and Philippe Coutinho (134), underlining how integral he’s become to Liverpool’s attacking output.

    • Henderson’s impressive points tally is sure to trigger an increase on his previous 6.0 starting price. It’s expected he’ll be pitched within the 7.5–8.5 bracket, which should offer good value in light of his security of starts. A stalwart under Brendan Rodgers’ regime, Henderson missed just one match last year due to injury and three matches in the 2013/14 season because of suspension. As one of the first names on Liverpool’s team sheet, Fantasy managers might well be tempted by the reliability he offers in the unpredictable opening few Gameweeks.

    • In the wake of Steven Gerrard’s departure from Anfield, Sterling’s uncertain future and Daniel Sturridge’s ongoing injury travails, the Reds are in need of a confident leader – someone who can rally the troops for an assault on the Champions League berths. Henderson displayed qualities becoming of such a character throughout last season, delivering at crucial moments and imploring others to match his tireless work ethic. In the midst of their 12-match unbeaten streak, Rodgers lauded Henderson’s growing influence in the centre of the park:

“I think Jordan is improving all the time. As he matures even more tactically, he’ll become even better. He’s always had athleticism and tactically he’s improving all the time. Technically, you see his qualities. His passing is improving. And he’s becoming one of the real leaders of this young team.”

    • While Liverpool will look to Henderson to fill Gerrard’s inspirational boots as skipper, he may also get to replace him on spot-kick duties. With Gerrard injured and Daniel Sturridge on the pitch, Henderson was reportedly the designated penalty taker back in February when Mario Balotelli controversially snatched the ball from him to notch against Besiktas. Henderson later converted from the spot against Arsenal in the damaging 4-1 defeat at the Emirates in April. With Balotelli unlikely to earn regular pitch-time next season and Danny Ings bedding in, Henderson would appear to be in a prime position to add spot-kicks to his blossoming goal potential.

  • Although the majority of Liverpool’s midfielders and forwards saw their productivity diminish as a result of Suarez’ emigration to northern Spain, Henderson actually upped his frequency of key passes (one every 53 minutes down to 52.1 minutes) and created more chances (66 to 58) than Coutinho. Similarly, his frequency of shots was near identical to 2013/14 (from 67.1 minutes per attempt to 68.8 minutes), though Henderson proved more clinical; he netted 12% of his chances last term compared to 8.2% the campaign beforehand, whereas Sterling (8.3%) and Coutinho (4.9%) struggled to convert their opportunities. Whilst Sterling looks set to join Steven Gerrard through the exit door, the likes of Coutinho and new boy Roberto Firmino could be set for extended summer breaks due to Brazil’s ongoing Copa America involvement. Given that James Milner will also need time to settle following his move from Man City, Henderson could well prove to be the most reliable option at Anfield over the first few weeks of the upcoming campaign.

Alderweireld to Spurs looking very likely.

If this happens, could Spurs defense be the cheap route into the defence of a top 5 club?

Third time im repeating this. 5 games head to head. 18 goals scored, 4 goals conceded. Spurs won zero games lol. Not complicated now is it?

And third time I'm saying this:

You don't judge how good teams are by their head to head record vs one team!!!!

And all you're doing in emphasising how bad Liverpool are, 6 points off Spurs, and you finished two points behind them...

Mason and Bentaleb are good well balanced players but don't really specialise in anything. It's better to have Matic a and Fabregas, or Busquets and Rakatic. Specialists with clear roles.

if true then Liverpool really are splashing the cash. it's gone from free transfers milner, bogdan, ings to 29 mill on firmino, up to 15 on clyne according to reports and 25 plus on benteke. trouble is the other big teams around them are looking at 35-65 mill players such as KDB, Pogba, ramos, benzema etc. benteke might not be the best finisher around but he's proved he can score goals in the prem

Internationals are a very different level of competition. Liverpool don't need an okay striker, nor a long ball striker, especially not one who is quite injury prone.

He's shown with Belgium he's not just a long ball striker. Just because Villa play that system doesn't mean it's the only system he can play in.

Him being some kind of Carroll type one dimensional donkey is a myth.

He has the tools to not be one dimensional but the only times he's done well for Villa have been with long balls, quick ones over the top and crosses. He'd 100% be a flop. Again I'd hardly point to international football as the level of quality a player is at.

That's what I'm saying though. It's the Villa way. You don't see him play any other way with them because that's how they play. So you haven't seen him fail at playing another way because you don't get to see him play another way.

The only time you see him play a different system is with Belgium. True it might be a different level, but that's the only thing that you can look at to see how he plays in a different system. And he does just fine.

Villa only started utilising him properly when Sherwood started them knocking it long on the counter. Before that he was cack. Not for me. 100% flop if he joins in my opinion.

                        - When Sherwood started playing to his strengths again it showed what he can do, when the system suits him he's good, Lambert had them playing terrible though. If Liverpool start playing long ball counter attacking football he'll be great. But that isn't happening.

The problem is when he's getting the ball though, he wants to challenge the CBs and get in there quickly, we don't counter much, we'll be pressing, for that his all round movement and passing is very, very poor, he's quite lazy in that respect.

If you can teach Tekkers what the offside rule is he can be a beast.

I could say the opposite. He scores goals. No argument wrong you on that. He can score a variety of goals. He offers that physical presence upfront that we have been missing. We dont cross into the box because we havent had any presence there in open play. Tbf i dont know much about Bacca so i would be backing that signing blindly.

I don't think we have any players to service him actually. I think we need the presence in midfield personally, for bigger games. :/

Clyne is one. Milner is another that can whip a decent cross in. Coutinho and firmino can thread him through balls.

I'm not being negative, he's a good player but the change that would be required to have him firing for us would be quite big. No point being optimistic if I feel the player just, outright, would no suit us. Don't mean to sound brash. 😉

Twitter is now full of benteke vids where he shows he can play on the deck. I think sherwood has played to his strengths and thats all us liverpool fans can think about-just hoofing the ball to him.

yeah they will have a good team with benteke, firmino, hendo, coutihno, lallana, sturridge, can etc but still for me the 5th best starting XI. unfortunately for Liverpool, as they get better, so are utd, city and arsenal. last season city were ageing and out of form, utd were in massive transitional period but both teams will spend big and rectify that this summer. it will be interesting to see at the start of the season how many Liverpool players would get into each of the top 4 teams starting XI.

He was so vital in our promotion campaign, many were surprised to see him warming the bench as much as he did last season. Was talking about him just two weeks ago at the pub, we would love to see him return to the first XI, but unlikely that he will - Andy King and Matty James seem to be much more loved by Pearson these days.
Drinkwater and Knockaert were deadcerts in the 13/14 season (and before as well), not sure why Pearsons gone for Andy and Matty but knowing Pearson - he will stick to his chosen combo. I can't see Danny/Knockaert making it back to the first team unless there's injuries which give them a chance.

😀 sorry I should proof read what I type. The intention was to limit Knockaert to just one sentence, didn't realise I spilled him onto the entire paragraph.
And Matty James is out until November isn't he. Just in time for Christmas rotations and then to claim the sport permanently from 2016.

Pulis will get him to defend. He gets his players playing as a single unit, as a team.

I'd pay 5.5m for him. Attacking threat and in a Pulis defence.

      Better price compared to Tekkers.

But he's barely completed 90mins in the last year and is gonna be 29 in a few months.

We don't need a youngster though, what happened to letting Origi, Sinclair and Ings grow a little? A 29 year old would allow that over the next 3 or so years.

I don't have a problem with signing a 29 year old, but I think FSG might. 20m for a 29 year old who has completed 90 mins less than expected could be seen a gamble perhaps.

The paper also say City have beaten off competition from Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid to capture the 22-year-old Frenchman.

Need a world class striker for what though? All depends what kind of ambitions you are giving them. Whether you are talking about a title challenge, a top 4 challenge or a top 6 challenge.

I'm going for top 4 challenge because that's the level I think they can aspire for. I think they can do that without needing a world class striker.

If they want top 4, they need to score more pts than teams with Rooney, Aguero, Costa, and Sanchez. They need to be more ambitious, before their impressive legacy starts to fade.

Norwich fan - you must be excited eh. I can remember this time last year - I just couldn't wait for the PL to start so that I could see Leicester in the PL for the first time in (what seems like) a long time.
Except that this is your second bite at the cherry in recent years, not sure if that is more excitement or more nervousness for you.
                But good luck 🙂

I'm not too nervous(although I might be if we follow the pattern of your season 😉 ) It will tough, of course, but I'm looking forward to the season and think we have a decent chance of staying up. We had 3 seasons the last time and 10 of the first XI were with us then so there's a good grounding of "relative" PL experience

I'm not too bothered about Schneiderlin from a Kosc perspective, Coquelin has been doing a fine job there (not saying he is as good as Morgan) and has upped their CS output so it shouldn't make too much of a difference. Cech is the big one

Why aren't spurs in for benteke (or another striker) ?

You cant rely on kane to last an entire season without injuries and even if he does fatigue may take the toll.on him like last season.

With the strong belgium connections tekkers maybe tempted unless a top4 club shows interest in him

Definitely we need another striker. The challenge is squad management. Would benteke play with kane? Kane would probably need to drop back into the hole. I Can't see benteke joining a non ecl team to not be a first teaser. Ideally we need someone who can play both with kane potentially as a wide attacker and also up top alone if kane injured or rested

The problem with playing one up top is that one is the main striker whilst the other is the understudy. Which quality would want to play second fiddle to Kane, unless as mentioned above Kane drops in to the hole

Hmm yeah like most cheap midfielders he seemed to go through spells. The main one was when Gerrard was out, so if he can keep producing at that level he will be great value at 7.5/8

He was a solid price when he had all the set pieces in his locker. Once Gerrard came back i felt the same.

An interesting article about why so few English players choose to play abroad.

Late July I think. I was well excited. Got out of bed at 3am or whatnot for it haha This year I feel I may be on holidays though. Long FPL ID for me this year I fear haha

Prices are key though. Cant do anything now with all this speculation. It could be all for nought. Really want a few bargains

Deulofeu for £4.3 million, I could say that is the bargain signing of the season.

Everton shaping up pretty nicely too, I'd be really surprised if they did a 14/15 again.

    ----------------------------------------Howard
    --Coleman---------Stones------------------------Jagielka------------Baines
    ------------Besic/Cleverley----------------------------McCarthy
    ---Deulofeu-------------------------Barkley--------------------------Mirallas
    -----------------------------------------Lukaku

Barkley, Lukaku and Mirallas are all better than what they did last season, and I'd expect them to improve. The defence is really solid, and Besic should play ahead of Barry.

My pick to make the top 7 again this season.

        I don''t think so.
Where would Mirallas go anyway? His performances have not been top-notch, neither his attitude for a big club to sign him.

Lennon only went on loan and Spurs want 7 mil for him and Everton don't want to pay that.
Del boy can play number 10 as well.
Jury out on Barckley. Hyped up too much and has not found a settled position.
Mirallas petulant and punished after grabbing a penalty from Baines.
Martinez changed style a bit towards the end of the season and defense became a little more settled.
          Everton need another centre back.
Oviedo might be a hit this year if he avoids injury.
I think Besic is a talent but first season frustrating for him playing centre back and holding mid.
With no Euro worries they should improve but not to the lofty heights of 5th like 2014.

Mornin lads. How are we all doing today?

According to Marca, Perez and Ramos have had a meeting where he reiterated his disappointment with the club and the contract offered (more money basically) and told Perez he wants to leave.

The way I see it as Perez is involved now, Ramos will sign a new contract and United left in the middle again. Would love him at United but can't see it happening now tbh.

Not bad mate. How did your exams go? Hope everything well went there.

Yeah, imagining Ramos to play for a different club is hard and since the contract is just the issue, I'm sure Real with all their wealth would pay up and it'll be settled. Just frustrated that United's the pawn in the war again. We are linked to almost everyone out there, just for the sake of it.

        Hopefully we get Morgan though.

          Yeah agreed.

Yeah Morgan would be a great signing for you guys, although I heard he had his heart settled on Arsenal? That was a few days ago and yesterday there were more rumours linking him with United though, so I'm not sure

Oh alright. Very nice. Good luck with the other two as well. You'll do well. Being a uni student myself I can understand the thrill of it.

Yes, that is why I'm not so sure about Morgan lately. If someone's linked to United in papers, he'll probably not sign. Most of the United signings came out of nowhere before as well, with not much talk in papers. Take ADM and Falcao last year. I think United doesn't let news leak and so the papers just make up stuff.

Coquelin is a CDM - when he was around, we were way better defensively, including against big teams. CS against City, CS against Chelsea, and just 1 goal each conceded against United and Liverpool.
