Moving Target

Moving Target – James McClean

West Bromwich Albion secured their first signing of the summer transfer window in June, landing Wigan Athletic winger James McClean on a three-year deal.

Having spent two years out of the top flight with the Latics, the Ireland international is relishing the opportunity to test his mettle in the Premier League once more:

“I’m delighted. I’ve played in the Premier League before and not only am I back here, but I’m with a stable top flight club and one that wants to push on. Tony Pulis told me what his plans were, where I would fit in. It was all very positive. He also told me he has a great dressing room, it’s been a stable club – but he’s made it clear he wants to push this club on. I’m very ambitious. Once the Albion came in this was a move I was keen to get done – this is a big club and a new chapter for me.”

The History

McClean began his professional career at Irish Premier League side Institute, where he made one appearance before signing for his local outfit, Derry City. During his four seasons for the Candystripes, McClean amassed 16 goals in 79 appearances, earning a move to Sunderland in the summer of 2011.

The Northern Ireland native made his first start for the Black Cats in January following the appointment of Martin O’Neil and went on to make a further 28 appearances in all competitions, notching six goals and four assists along the way. After being named Sunderland’s Young Player of the year, McClean recorded five goals and four assists across 41 outings in the subsequent campaign.

McClean signed for Wigan in August 2013, making his debut in a 2-0 loss to Manchester United in the FA Community Shield. Although the Latics were relegated from the Championship last term, McClean ended the season as their top scorer with six goals (and six assists) and was rewarded with the Player of the Year gong. In all, the Derry-born wide man racked up 10 goals and 12 assists in 86 appearances throughout his two-year stint with the Latics.

Despite earning seven caps for Northern Ireland U21s, McClean resisted calls from Martin O’Neill to play for the senior side and instead waited for a call-up from Republic of Ireland. McClean has since gone on to tally 31 caps for Ireland, chalking up four goals in the process.

The Prospects

Judging from Pulis’ comments on McClean’s transfer, it seems that the Baggies coach intends to deploy him on the left wing when he’s afforded pitch time:

“He’s got Premier League experience from his time with Sunderland. James has had a couple of indifferent years with Wigan but he did well at Sunderland and we’re very pleased to have him on board. I am absolutely confident that he can fulfil the potential to come back and be a big player for us. He’s got pace, he’s left-footed – so he gives us a good balance in the side – and he can score goals.”

Whether or not McClean can cement a regular starting berth remains to be seen, considering his former Wigan team-mate Callum McManaman struggled to make an impact upon his arrival in January. Nonetheless, a return of six goals and assists in the Championship last season holds him in good stead, particularly when the Baggies ranked in the bottom five with regards to goals scored (38) in the previous campaign.

One of West Brom’s most glaring deficiencies last season was the limited goal contribution from their midfield contingent. Collectively, the Baggies’ ten midfielders combined for just ten strikes, with Craig Gardner producing more efforts (56) than any team-mate in the centre of the park. McClean total of 89 attempts last season – albeit in a lower league – highlights his ability to carve out goal attempts in an underperforming outfit.

Crucially, if McClean is granted a run of starts on the Baggies left flank, then there’s a real possibility that Chris Brunt will be utilised as a left-back by Pulis again. Such a scenario could deprive us of a defensive option as a consequence – given that Brunt is likely to be classified as midfielder across the Fantasy games. Bearing in mind that the midlands side racked up 16 clean sheets last season, this would prove frustrating for Fantasy managers.

Such concerns are likely to drive many to prioritise Boaz Myhill as their weapon of choice in the Baggies rearguard. Unless Pulis strengthen’s in this area, Myhill is poised to be first choice in goal in light of Ben Foster’s injury: the England international is expected to be out until mid-October following knee surgery in March. Myhill seems likely to start the season at a price of 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League, providing strong value and obvious initial Baggies acquisition.

Regardless, West Brom’s brutal start to the campaign (MCI, wat, CHE, sto, SOU, avl) is set to temper early investment, with Myhill likely to have to rely on save points for early returns. Their trio of home fixtures certainly look unlikely to return clean sheets, but the fact that no side tallied more away shut-outs (eight) than Pulis’ side last season bodes well for their kinder road fixtures and beyond.

Myhill may represent the limit of our pre-season interest in the West Brom squad, although with clashes against City and Chelsea at the Hawthorns early on, McClean is certainly presented with a big stage on which to win over his new supporters.

There isn't an official game as the FPL one, but this should be the best one cause is pretty famous in Italy: http://classic.fantagenius.com/ The site is in italian so it is really difficoult to understand it!

Anyway the rules are completely different. It works by ratings(from 10 to 1) hand has malus and bonus. If a player scores he will get +3 of bonus, assist +1. If the GK concedes he will get -1. There are, also no CS

            8 years, 11 months ago

The bonus will be added at the ratings. For example: Higuain playes well and gets a rating of 7 and also scores (so +3) he will get a vote of 10.
The ratings are estabilished from that site.

€25M according to L'Équipe, and it seems more likely as they already turned Inter's €20M offer down as insufficient, and Porto's bid would be paid in two pieces as well.

Porto reported €20M to the authorities: http://web3.cmvm.pt/sdi/emitentes/docs/FR56324.pdf

I'm aware of the official transfer fee, it's cited everywhere. I'd suppose they add to this €2M to Imbula's father plus €1.25M to Guingamp, making it a total of €23.25M. That's quite probable, in fact, but these Portuguese deals are almost always dodgy and diffuse because of the existence of the third-party investors, see below. Even if they now have to report it as having themselves bought 100% of his contract, as third-party ownership is illegal, it is quite likely that they still have some way to round this rule, and very unlikely that they actually had enough cash to win competition of the big Milanese clubs, Valencia and the English clubs. Porto is not a rich club itself and the money from those massive transfers go for a large part to the third-party owners (e.g. they got less than €25M from James' transfer to Monaco).

€20M according to the official statement just released by F.C. Porto.
            Also, release clause of €50M.

Back to this deal, what's interesting in this is that Doyen Sports has apparently paid half of the fee. Now, FIFA has just recently banned third-party ownership, and UEFA has filed in an appeal for the European Commission to not only ban it too but ban it so that all the possible loopholes in the FIFA administrated ban would be closed.

So, the future of this deal remains unclear. UEFA holds that third-party ownership is not compliant with FFP, and may possibly prohibit the use of third-party owned players in UEFA competitions. In which case Imbula would not play for Porto in CL.

Official: Bayern signs Douglas Costa. €35M for 5 goals/season striker seems a bit inflated, but it is the luxury of Bayern to be able to pay €35M for a guy who will essentially be a backup.

Well, okay, but compared to Robben by his club (Shakhtar), who is essentially a striker despite playing on the flank (a wing forward), and should he play that role, his stats are very underwhelming. That said, he has seemed much more willing to handle his defensive tasks in CL than Robben is, so maybe that gives him some appeal.

James Pearce-Liverpool want to sign Benteke but are unwilling to pay £32.5mil asking price and that stand off remains. Liverpool don't want to pay £25mil for Benteke who has 2 years remaining on his current contract. Villa have no interest in selling Benteke and are highly unlikely to accept a lower than the release clause.Part of the reason is that Villa will have to pass on 15% of any fee over £7mi to Genk

Yup. They can try and negotiate but in the end all they can offer is cash and they'll lose on every single player they want if they don't deploy the same tactics they did with Firmino.

For those who started off with begovic last season are you planning to get 5.0 + 4.0 or 4.5 x2
was planning to go 4.5 x2 but a lot saying rotating goalies isn't great

The problem is finding a player keeper for only 4.0. Might have to go with 4.5 x 2 even if not rotating.

I'd like to see Origi get some game time. I'm only basing it on his world cup games but he looked a very good fit for us then. Too much of an ask for Sinclair atm. If we have decent runs in cup comps/ europa, then they should all get plenty of game time.

i wouldn't. Balotelli needs to have someone upfront with him and he is so inconsistent and selfish. He also seems a little toxic to club moral. He looked good against Spurs but i'd rather have our wingers/mids ahead of him. Balo's wages are pretty high i would have thought.

that's debatable. On his day yes, he's decent, but he doesn't have the correct approach to football . His attitude isn't great and i think he loves money and goofing around more than he loves football.

There's a reason why Ings is playing at Burnley for 22 but Mario had played for Inter, City and Italy. He's a nuisance don't get me wrong, but he's far better than Danny Ings.

there's a reason we are struggling to shift Mario. Mario has the attributes to be very good, but his attitude has compromised everything. He's wasted his potential. I'd rather have someone in and around the squad who will graft and wants to succeed. Ings should be our third choice forward next season. Atm He's better than Wilson at Utd. Sanogo or whoever 3rd choice is at Arsenal.

Quite interested due to good fixtures but won't pay more than 5.5. If they're in the 6 region then I'd probably end up with an Arsenal defender instead.

Problem is I think Fonte will be 6, Bertrand 6/6.5, Cedric 6 and then that just leaves the new CB to give a chance for 5.5.

Southampton needs to stop selling their players. They should get their income from the Champions' League instead.

I don't see why Southampton can't get into the Champions' League.

They produce players Clyne, Lallana, Schneiderlin, Walcott, Chamberlain, JWP, Bale, and Shaw.

      1. Lucy.
        • 10 Years

With respect to Palace, we didn't produce Clyne. And with respect to Strasbourg, Schneiderlin came to us at 18.

We had no choice about Clyne. His contract was expiring and he wouldn't sign a new one.

Im holding off on City players until GW 4 and then loading up for their run of:
WAT cpl WHM tot NEW BOU

Have you got any teams in mind for a specific set of fixtures early on?

I'm holding off on Silva. {wba CHE eve} don't appeal to me. Im hoping he does nothing and then drops in price a little then I'll get him for GW4.

What about Aguero then? Unlikely he'll start GW1 and no point bringing him in GW2. That leaves two weeks to bring in two players.

I may WC, I have for GW 4 every year. Maybe I'll look for a defender, probably not though, I'll figure something out.

I'm not a fan of WCing just to bring in players with good fixtures. It should either be used when you need it or saved for a bumper DGW (which it seems there will be this year).

Think the Firmino one is a tad off mark. The difference was between a £15 million fee reported for United or a £29 million fee at Pool. Double a player's price and you find opinions change. Though I think Pool make more sense for him, as I said at the start, United wouldn't really have a proper position for him given they're a tad loaded up on attacking mids.

As for Clyne, I'd take him at United or Pool, improves the starting XI and at a good price. Well, at least assuming the Southampton curse doesn't strike him like the other defenders they sold, but he's a good buy imo.

I think this is particularly the case of the ManU and Liverpool fans. And as long as a player seems close to sign for them, he is very exciting, a super player, and if he signs for them, he's class above the others, but if he doesn't, he's a bullet dodged and they're happy the rival wasted their money on such a mediocre player.

And a lot of the time, they don't have great knowledge of the player's abilities, they just go on the hype and the alleged rivalry to sign that player.

Read here (in FFS) earlier that Hoffenheim had spent a part of that Firmino money on Kruse. I thought this was very surprising as Kruse was already in a more successful club at Gladbach, and a brilliant player, so checked it the other day, and for the information of all stats geeks, our beloved Max Kruse was signed already in May by _Wolfsburg_ for a fee of €12M, an absolute bargain.

It wasn't people. It was just somebody here commenting on that Firmino deal that Hoffenheim got the best of it. They still made some very impressive signings:

Kaderabek from Sparta Prague for a fee of 3.5m; Schar from Basel for a fee of 4.1m; Schmid from Freiburg for a fee of 3.8m.

Excellent signings and for a cheap price too. Kruse would have been just so strange, a real coup, have to admit, but strange for him. Happy to see him in CL next year.

Can't believe I missed his transfer, but then again I was very busy at the time.

Alright, I accept that. I'm a fan of moneyball as I've told, and really like well run clubs. Hoffenheim are doing good things. So is Gladbach, though, and I'm a bit sad that they lost Kruse and for such a low price too. I'd value him around €40M.

Steadily rising NPGA90 for 3 seasons now from 0.57 to 0.7, constantly improving decent conversion rate from 14% 2 seasons ago to now already 17%, inside the box conversion rate 25% and 28% in Gladbach years, bit lower at Freiburg, but admittedly Gladbach style raises that rate. Also scored 3 from outside the box at Freiburg, showing some shooting skill in that. For 3 years in a row produced 60%+ dribble success rate as an attacking wide player, with quite high numbers of dribbles too (except last season when his total dropped to 58). Consistently producing almost 3 chances per 90 minutes for last 3 seasons.

Briefly, these are stats that a couple of years ago it was joked that it would make you think of Götze or Modric or Mata, except that none of them has since then produced so globally strong stats so consistently despite playing in better teams.

Doesn't need to say much I suppose. Milner and Clyne just get a quiet nod of approval from the press and public. Much easier than fending off rubbish about Sterling and Balotelli.

He was killed, when FSG roll him out again it'll actually be the new Brodge-bot 3000, an improvement for sure.

2 solid signings imo so far for Liverpool in Clyne and Milner.

Their transfer committee have done some good work for a change.
