Projections and Rate My Team Are Live

After yesterday’s launch of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, our Projections and Rate My Team tool have both been updated with initial numbers in our Members Area and are now live. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

We will be tweaking this numbers on a daily basis as new players enter the game and as the pre-season reveals more on likely starting lineups and roles.

Once again this term, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by “Professor” Chris Atkinson.

Below you’ll find an FAQ on our Projections and Rate My Team, plus links to movies with Chris that talk you through the functionality of Rate My Team and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

Access to these tools requires Membership and these are available for the pre-season price of £12.50 (RRP £15.00). Registered users can upgrade their accounts via this link, while new users can register as members here.

View this page for full details on all our benefits for Members.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections almost every day up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly. A new player, particularly if we anticipate they will threaten a starting role, can have a major impact on the projections and Rate My Team, influencing the projected output of his new team-mates.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers. We normally update on both Tuesday and Friday in order to build the latest team news into the numbers.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking, defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you’ll see in the movie below, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers. In the second “My Team” movie below, you can preview this functionality in full.

Rather than post your team in the comments on the main site, our members can now enter their FPL code in Rate My Team and it will immediately offer you an appraisal of your squad. Using Rate my Team you can transfer players in and out of your squad and get an immediate appraisal of the impact of that transfer.

How likely is Mane to start with JRod back in the picture? Feel I need to have at least 1 SOT attacker for the first block of fixtures.

    Cheers 🙂

I think Lucy posted something like

      Tadic - Mane - JRod
      --Pelle--

JRod to probably get eased into the striker role if Pelle fails.

I'm your man. Mane is too big of a playmaker to sit the bench. Ronald Koeman will find any way to squeez him in the lineup. With J Rod, it will only help imo. Not only will we see goals from mane, we should see plenty of assists.

indeed but I think Mata might be a better option than Rooney, you could shift Rooney to Tekkers, Pelle, Gomid or dare I say, Lukaku *vomits*, swap the 5.5 to Sakho and maybe lose Ritchie or Cabaye

If Palace get Austin then I'd rather him over Yohann

Depends if Utd sign another striker tbh. Mata may get rotated and could lose pens.

Austin to Palace could be FPL gold for sure and doubling up with Cabaye could be viable.

    Butland (Hennessey)

      Looking good.
Not sure if I'd pick Toby myself and Cabaye looks to be a better pick than Puncheon but they are both pretty similar. Could be better options than Sakho as well but I guess that's just my personal opinion.

I can't find any other good defender at 5.0. I tought about Azpi at 6.0 but I don't trust Chelsea defence at the begenning like last season.
        I can't justify 0.5 for Cabaye.
Sakho has 2 home homes after GW1 so he is a must IMO

No, no. He truly was woeful for us in the PL (good in the Championship) 😛 He was just good from a corner.

How have they Cabaye priced so quickly?

      Mark rodgers

What would take so long? A bunch of fantasy guys sit around their big round table and agree on a good price for him. Its not as if they have to go through some legal process

I know that, I not saying fair play or anything. But when was the transfer confirmed? It used to usually take over a week, no?

He signed his contract this morning. Everything was confirmed. Pictures were taken, so the Fantasy guys in their fancy suits put him in ASAP. Which is great

Probably easier to price him because he used to play in the PL.

They probably have to do more research if they aren't PL players.

Something with both Rooney and Aguero, weak defensively though:

    Schmeichel Butland
    Ivanovic Cedric O'Shea Morgan Francis
    Fabregas Ramsey Cazorla Ritchie Wanyama
    Aguero Rooney Deeney

That's not a bad defence (but swap Kasper for Butland)

I came up with something similar

It's easy to do if you have one or the other of Kun and Hazard. Squeezing both in makes it hard, Forget about Sanchez

Ivan -> Azpi to free up 1m to upgrade either Ritchie or O'Shea.
Also I'm unsure about both Rambo and Caz being in the team.

so, now ask, is Hazard worth it at the start, especially as Cesc tends to start well and Haz doesn't

Fabregas was very fortunate last season. It was a matter of everything he touched turned to gold.

I don't think he'll reach those numbers again.

I think his role in the team is drastically different. Tasked with controlling midfield, rather than creating.

Could still be an option, but won't be near 19 assists again, imo.

Mid-table clubs really strengthening this year. I am expecting a lot fewer easy victories for the top 4 against the likes of Wham or Palace, these games could be the decisive factor to who wins the league.
